Toyota tows space shuttle to infinity and beyond The American manned space program may well be deceased, at least for now. In what seemed a planned eulogy, Toyota announced that a Tundra pickup will be towing the space shuttle Endeavor to a museum, where it will be mothballed, in one month. Meanwhile, Neil Armstrong, the very first male to walk on the moon, was memorialized on the very same day. Shuttles end with Toyota The Endeavor will be going to LAX Exposition Park, a 12 mile trip from LAX, on Oct 13. After that, a 2012 Tundra truck will tow the Endeavor the last leg of the journey to the California Science Center. The Endeavor weighs 300,000 pounds, which is a ton of weight for one truck. Publicity for history Toyota has a pretty sweet arrangement with the California Science Center where it is able to get a lot of publicity. There are some 2012 Tundra CrewMax -ton pickups on display. Ed Laukes of Toyota Motor Sales marketing spoke about this. “There is no larger or more recognizable icon of the U.S. space program’s success than the shuttle, and to have it towed by the Toyota Tundra is not only an incredible example of the capabilities of the truck, but an honor to be part of history. The entire journey is something the world will be watching, and gives us a chance to prove that the ‘overbuilt’ Tundra is built to do any job — even tow the space shuttle.” The Endeavor has a dolly that is specially made for it to be able to make it so the Tundra can actually tow it in spite of its 10,000 pounds pulling limit. The truck does have a 5.7 liter V8, but it still does not have the power to tow 300,000 pounds without the help. The Endeavor is not actually being hauled very far anyway since it is just a quarter mile through the park. Studying the shuttles The Endeavor is not the first shuttle to get put in a gallery. In fact, there are three others that have already been shelved. The New York City Sea-Air Space Museum has the Enterprise, the Florida Kennedy Space Center has the Atlantis, and the Washington D.C. Smithsonian has the Discovery. Stay away from roads when the transportation occurs On Oct 13, the hug shuttle will be moved, and that is probably the day LA commuters might want to stay from freeways. The 405 and 110 already have terrible traffic. The route has not been announced yet, but the average lane on a freeway is only 12 feet wide, and the shuttle is over 78 feet long with its wingspan. A lot of residents were upset when some old growth trees were cut down, according to
