In 1839 Vacheron Constantin created several machines, among them the famous pantograph, a mechanical device which meant that for the first time in history principal watchmaking components could be reproduced with total precision, raising the quality of its timepieces once again. This invention carried the brand into the future and would revolutionise Swiss watchmaking.

Faithful to the history for which it is renowned, Vacheron Constantin undertakes to maintain, repair and restore all watches it has produced since its foundation: a sign of excellence and confidence which still today gives the manufacture its reputation.

The Roll Call of Horlogical Complications There’s a good reason why these brands are mesmerising timepieces.

Breguet, the Innovator Invention of the Tourbillon, 1801. The tourbillon history is an intriguing and thoughtprovoking one. Along with minute repeaters, grande and petite sonneries, perpetual calendars, and chronographs, the tourbillon is one of the most fascinating complications of mechanical horology. Priced out of the reach of all but a lucky few, the tourbillon is rarely seen up close and personal but most often seen in pictures. Once viewed, however, one cannot help but be seduced by the stately and measured dance of the tourbillon (“whirlwind” in French). The tourbillon history dates back to the 18th century. The invention of the tourbillon, or tourbillon regulator stems from the days of the pocket watch and came about as a result of men's quest for improved accuracy of marine chronometers, a chronometer being a high precision watch. The lives of 18th century sailors on the high seas literally depended on the accuracy of their ship's deck watch or these marine chronometers to steer them on course and out of harm's way. The quest for accuracy was obvious and did not end there – after all, this was a time of continual innovation and invention in horology, the start of the tourbillon history being just around the corner. As a chronometer would almost invariably rest in the same position, gravity was a directional constant affecting the behaviour of the chronometer's balance wheel and balance spring. In fact, the influence of gravity on the accuracy of mechanical watches had worried watchmakers for centuries. Depending on the position of the watch in the vertical plane (crown left, right, down or up), different variations in the frequency of the balance wheel will occur as a result of changes in its centre of gravity. For when a watch is in the vertical position, the earth's gravity either accelerates or slows the balance and the escapement (mechanism in the watch that regulates the speed of rotation of the wheels), causing a rate gain or loss. Even a watch in excellent condition that has been recently lubricated, serviced, and

adjusted for temperature variations will still suffer the inevitable influence of the gravitational force of the earth. To nullify the effects of gravity in pocket watches, the great French watchmaker, Abraham-Louis Breguet invented the tourbillon in 1795, propelling the tourbillon history. But his invention became known officially only in 1801 when he applied for a patent. The first pocket watch equipped with a tourbillon mechanism was sold in 1805 but it was presented formally to the public during the Parisian show of French industrial products in 1806. Remember now that the tourbillon is a holdover from the days of the pocket watch. One chapter in the tourbillon history evidences that the tourbillon regulator made the jump to wristwatches starting in 1930. Unlike a wristwatch, a pocket watch worn in a vest will spend the majority of its time in a vertical position. Therefore, Breguet allegedly decided that, for the absolute best accuracy, some means of balancing out the effects of gravity in the various positions was needed. His ingenious solution placed the balance wheel, escape lever, and escape wheel in a cage, which then rotated a full 360 degrees making a complete revolution around itself, usually in a minute. In this way, the overall effects of gravity get balanced out, as the escapement of the movement never spends any significant time in one vertical position. The tourbillon, therefore, tends to compensate for errors that occur as a result of the position of the watch, thereby increasing its accuracy. One chapter in the tourbillon history that begun with Breguet has been written; but the pursuit for sophistication, horological excellence and high aesthetics is not over yet. Another chapter of the tourbillon history is currently being written by contemporary watchmakers coming up

with complicated tourbillon inventions, such as the flying tourbillon and the double axis tourbillon outperforming and in some cases outshining the traditional Breguettype tourbillons. The Classique Grande complication Tourbillon 5317 provides the perfect setting for Breguet’s most spectacular invention and undeniably the most beautiful of all horological complications. Carnival of Venice Minute Repeater Ulysse Nardin finds inspiration in one of the world’s most romantic cities for the new, limited-edition Minute Repeater Carnival of Venice, a creation of stunning artistic illustration and brilliant engineering. And, it’s not the first time this magical place has been the setting for a Ulysse Nardin timepiece’s tale. In the late 1980s, Ulysse Nardin introduced San Marco, a watch that symbolized the rebirth of the minute repeater, a complication that allows time to not only be seen, but also heard in sublime quality. A repeater is as much a musical instrument as it is a timekeeper. Renowned for its many “firsts” in watchmaking, Ulysse Nardin introduced a surprising variation to this late 17th century invention – the “Jaquemart”. Jaquemarts are beautifully animated figures set into the dial and move in sync with the activated minute repeater, contributing to the storyline of the timepiece. Its dial, the heart of the timepiece, depicts two figures in front of the Rialto Bridge on the Grand Canal. Both Jaquemarts are wearing masks, alluding to the Carnival of Venice. The feeling of festivity is set. With the minute repeater’s chiming of the hours, quarters and minutes, the Jaquemarts lift their masks. To this day, Ulysse Nardin remains among the rare manufacturers in the world to use Jaquemarts on the dial of its wristwatch minute repeaters.

Intensifying the elaborate detail of the dial is the enamel champlevé technique, a lost decorative art that is mastered by less than a handful of craftsman; today, only leading watchmakers such as Ulysse Nardin produce pieces showcasing enamel champlevé. Champlevé is an enameling technique in which cells, or cavities, are carved with a chisel directly on a thick metal plate, or dial, creating the design, and filled with vitreous enamel; a variety of colors are generated from different metallic oxides. The piece is then fired until the enamel melts, and when cooled, the surface of the object is sanded delicately by hand, an essential step in the process. Excess enamel is removed and the piece is polished, allowing the enamel’s true color and shine to break through. Several baking operations are needed to achieve the multiple levels of color, depth and three-dimensional quality found in only the finest enamel champlevé timepieces. In this very special creation, the result is an art form of meticulous detail further ornamented with engravings and available only to a select few. The Carnival of Venice Minute Repeater is a limitededition mechanical timepiece of eighteen made in 18-karat rose gold. It is an exceptional example of the skill of the hand and the dedication of the mind to the enduring and evolving skill of watchmaking. Retail price €266,000.

Patrimony Contemporaine Perpetual Calendar ELEGANT COMPLICATION The emblematic Patrimony Contemporaine collection welcomes a stellar complication in 2011: the perpetual calendar. Housing the legendary Calibre 1120 QP, a mechanical selfwinding movement stamped with the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva, the Patrimony Contemporaine Perpetual Calendar ultra-thin model reveals the inherent elegance and finesse of Vacheron Constantin. A useful and sophisticated major complication is enriching the Patrimony Contempoarine collection by Vacheron Constantin. Beating to the rhythm of the legendary Calibre 1120 QP – acknowledged by connoisseurs as one of the most iconic perpetual calendar movements – the latest addition to the range will be able to keep track of all the vagaries of the calendar and require no correction whatsoever until March 1st 2100. Unlike simple calendar mechanisms that require manual correction after each month with less than 31 days, the perpetual calendar takes account of the leapyear cycle with its months of 31, 30 or 28 days, and the quadrennial return of February 29th. Since the movement must be mechanically adjusted to take account of the irregular nature of our calendar, this sophisticated function calls for considerable prowess in terms of miniaturisation. An indispensable prerequisite for integrating the calendar functions, this miniaturisation was pushed to the limit in order to create an ultra-thin perpetual calendar movement such as Vacheron Constantin’s Calibre 1120 QP which measures a mere 4.05mm thick. Retail price €71,900.

MIKIMOTO GRADING SYSTEM

“I would like to adorn the necks of all the women of the world with pearls”

5% Mikimoto Top Quality

KOKICHI MIKIMOTO

Over one hundred years ago, in 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in producing the world’s first cultured pearl. Since that day, Mikimoto continues to make history, creating its own distinctive style. Mikimoto has developed the highest standards of quality and consistency by devoting more than a century to understanding the sea and researching the oyster. Only the top 5% of the pearl harvest meets the strict quality standards of Mikimoto. “I would like to adorn the necks of all the women of the world with pearls,” Kokichi Mikimoto said shortly after he succeeded in culturing a perfectly round pearl. He seemed to be rambling on about an unachievable dream. However, the elegant beauty of Kokichi’s cultured pearls was eventually recognized by women throughout the world, and his wish was fulfilled, as the name “Mikimoto” became well-known around the globe. With his keen, instinctive sense of beauty, Kokichi was the most enthusiastic of jewellers, a man who devoted his life to the cultured pearls and pearl jewellery that he loved and set his hopes upon.

Book 1.indb 20

Pearls are created from a core. The core of a natural pearl is simply a fragment of shell or fishbone, or a grain of sand that strays into the unsuspecting pearl oyster’s shell. To protect itself from this irritant the oyster secretes multiple layers of nacre, forming a pearl. Kokichi Mikimoto conceived a method of duplicating this natural process by inserting a shell fragment into the oyster and stimulating the oyster to grow the thousands of layers of nacre which form a beautiful lustrous pearl. Annual Pearl Harvest Worldwide

The 5-criteria evaluation method of Mikimoto Quality, is universally recognized and applied throughout the world and guarantees every pearl purchased is singled out and falls within the Mikimoto criteria. Only 5% of the world’s pearl production is ever eligible to become a Mikimoto Top Quality, this exclusive percentage is divided furthermore into four exclusive categories of excellence.
