How To Design A Bedroom That Unleashes Your Child’s Creativity (NAPS)—Many parents may be surprised to learn that, according to Harris research, children begin taking an interest in changing their rooms just after the age of 5, citing more space to hang out and play as the No. 1 wish for the space. The study also found that 71 percent of parents think the design of a child’s room impacts creativity. “We’ve seen how room design can unleash a child’s creativity in our own family,” said Cortney Novogratz from HGTV’s “Home by Novogratz.” “For example, it’s im­portant to give children their own workspace and play space filled with materials designed to help express their ideas in a productive and inspirational way, like arts and crafts supplies and construction toys such as LEGO Friends. It’s also important to give children plenty of floor space in which to play and get creative; this gives them their own personal space in which to spread out and use their imaginations to the fullest.” In addition to inviting children to put their remodeling and re­ building skills to the test using toys that encourage construction, Robert and Cortney Novogratz offer these suggestions for creating those special environments that children will find inspiring and parents will find appealing: • Give kids more space. (NAPS)—Electrical failures and malfunctions are a leading cause of house fires year after year—but you can stay safe at home. Many electrical fires can be prevented simply by understanding basic electrical safety principles and following safe practices. Keep Home Fires From Burning To help you protect your home and family from electrical fires, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) offers these tips: • Safety should always be the top priority when working with electricity. ESFI recommends that a qualified, licensed electrician perform all home electrical work in compliance with local and national safety standards. • Consider having your circuit breakers replaced with arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs), which provide enhanced electrical fire protection by detecting dangerous arcing conditions. • Make sure all electrical panel circuits are properly labeled. Always replace fuses or circuit breakers with the correct size and amperage. • Keep the area around the electrical panel clear so you can easily shut off power in an emergency. • Every month, use the TEST button to check that ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) and AFCIs are working properly. • Look for warning signs of an electrical problem, such as outlets and switches that are warm or make crackling, sizzling or buzzing noises. • Regularly check cords, outlets, switches, and appliances for signs of damage. Do not use damaged electrical devices. • Do not use extension cords on a permanent basis and never use them with space heaters or air conditioners. • Avoid overloading outlets. • Do not use lightbulbs that exceed the recommended wattage of the light fixture or lamp. What to Do in Case of Fire Despite your best prevention efforts, a fire could still happen. Follow these five tips to make sure your family is prepared to make a safe escape: 1. Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the house. 2. Test smoke alarms every month. 3. Create a family fire escape plan that includes two ways out of each room. 4. Pick an easy-to-find meeting place outside, a safe distance from your home. 5. Practice your escape plan by having at least two fire drills a year. Start one fire drill at night while your family is sleeping. Consumers Have Affordable Options When It Comes To Floor Covering

(NAPS)—Buttery-soft carpet, weathered hardwood and hard-as-diamonds surface treatments are some of the latest trends consumers will encounter the next time they shop for floor covering. That’s the word from scouts and experts attending one of the home market’s top international flooring trade shows—Surfaces. The show is sponsored by the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA). Reports from the show offer some insight on the latest products and trends in flooring. Less Is More Companies are concentrating on products that are sensible, low maintenance and easy on the budget. The new products making headlines include supersoft carpets that clean up “good as new” with lifetime stain warranties; affordable vinyl mimicking genuine stone; hardwood with precision detailing; and hard-surface flooring that has built-in antimicrobial properties. Vinyl flooring today offers the look of stone, ceramic tiles and hardwood—sometimes so closely that you have to get on your hands and knees to tell the difference. These products can put good looks at the feet of all homeowners at a fraction of the cost and with less maintenance than their higher-cost authentic cousins. Prices have come down on many eco-friendly floors thanks to high demand in the commercial industry. As a result, more people can install top-quality hardwood, bamboo or cork for several dollars per square foot less than a year ago. High Style, Low Maintenance A number of products across all flooring categories promise to cut maintenance, cleaning and care time. For example, hardwood manufacturers have introduced surface treatments that are as hard as diamonds. There are even new products said to have wear layers that can withstand just about any kind of wear and tear—large families, animals, dirt and grime. Other surfaces, including laminate and vinyl, are touting easy-to-maintain wear-surface durability. Some are equipped with built-in antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, as well as stain resistance. In the carpet category, new products have built-in stain resistance, odor reducers, air fresheners and luxuriously soft fibers that maintain their integrity for years. Weathered and Reclaimed Weathered and distressed floors are taking hold across multiple categories. This finish increases sturdiness and allows the product to withstand the high traffic and heavy wear of large families and pets. In addition to distressed looks, homeowners now have the option of “reclaimed” wood floors. These floors are recycled from dismantled buildings, disassembled furniture, wood and agricultural scrap. Repurposing saves money, is green and offers unique, designer-quality looks.
