Greetings, Pennsylvania Holstein Breeders
It is almost spring, my snow baby flowers are blooming and I see the crocus, tulips and daffodils popping out of the ground. I am sure you are getting anxious about getting into the fields to prepare for planting. We have an outstanding issue this time celebrating the Junior Holstein members and their accomplishments from last year. Thank you to the many county associations who are encouraging their youth and promoting their accomplishments. Since we are focusing on the youth the Debbie Cornman first half of this issue is dedicated to just that, sharing the Junior Holstein youth accomplishments. I would like to wish all the best to those who will be representing Pennsylvania at the National Junior Holstein Convention this summer in New York. I would like to thank the many sponsors, clubs and advertisers for supporting the Profiles and making it possible to share the great activities of our PA Junior Holstein members. There are many spring sale and breeder ads sharing their consignments to the various sales. If you are looking for show calves or more milk you can find it in these ads. PA Holstein Profiles magazine will be available for online viewing starting with this issue through Dairy Agenda Today, ad on page 56. We will post the Profiles several days after the mailing of the issue. The Profiles will be See GREETINGS - Page 50

Ken’s Comments by Ken Raney President Hostetter and members of the Association it is indeed a pleasure to address the 103rd Annual Meeting of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association. It is truly a pleasure to work for an Association whose members have so much interest and enthusiasm for the Association. The first state convention was hosted by the Southwest District here in Greensburg in 1955. Our convention tradition has carried on including the addition of a separate Junior Convention in 1989, which has seen interest in our Junior program skyrocket. Arthur Nesbitt was Secretary/Fieldman at the 1955 Convention and he highlighted some accomplishments that year that I would like to compare with our 2015 year end accomplishments. In 1955 state membership was 1,771 In 2015 we had 2,551 adult members and 1,650 Junior members. We have a very dedicated group of officers, Executive Committee and Board of Directors. They all work together to put programs and activities in place that will hopefully benefit our membership. We appreciate the support of seven (7) businesses that offered discount coupons to our paid members; this is a great incentive to join our Association. Our Association works on a committee structure to get ideas and pro-

grams started. As we look at our State Committees I would like to take a minute to recognize our chairpeople: Michael Yoder, Sale Committee; Jeff Ansell, Show Committee; James Houser, Activities Committee; Merenda Sellers, Youth Committee; Paul Semmel, Resolutions; Kevin Holtzinger, Finance. President Hostetter made these appointments and I think he got the cream of the crop in putting together his chairpeople. We appreciate their help over the last two years in moving our Association forward. We will be working on appointing new standing committees this spring. If you would like to serve on a committee or know of someone who you feel has the desire to serve, please give their name to any Executive Committee member or contact the office with names, we are always looking for new people to serve. In 1955 the State Sale averaged $423, an increase of $22 over the previous year. Take a look at what our consignment and dispersal sale programs did in 2015. Over $2.2 million dollars was generated through this program. Most of that money went back to our members through consignor checks.
❏ New
❏ Renewal
David Lentz, our Director of Sales, continues to manage our consignment and dispersal program very effectively. His attitude and drive to get the best for each sale has proven to benefit our members and the Association. The farm in Middletown has over the year’s added great value and opportunity for the Association. Although 2015 was a slow year for international work, as we only loaded three (3) boats this year, things remained busy as our domestic business continued to flourish. David Lentz marketed almost $2 million dollars worth of cattle, many of them making a stop at Middletown before reaching their final destination. Again we appreciate the relationship with Stoneylawn Farms, the Kopp Family, who assists with all aspects of our farm operation. In 1955 Junior exhibitors were recognized for the first time at the State Show. Our 1,650 juniors certainly have many more opportunities today. We offer well mover 30 contests and activities for them to choose from. We just completed our 29th separate convention that saw 31 contestants in public speaking, 39 dairy bowl teams and opContinued on page 34 - Ken’s Comments

Remarks - Alan Hostetter PA Holstein President
Friends, guests and members of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association, it’s hard to believe 2 years have gone by since I stood before you as your next President. Those 2 years have gone so fast. Your association continues to be strong and able to adapt to changing times. As our export business has almost diminished, our domestic sales have increased to meet our financial needs. David Lentz has been extra busy gathering 150 open heifers a month at the farm where they are tested and loaded to go to a Wisconsin client. Between this and other cattle deals plus his daughter’s geography bees, David has been exceptionally busy. Our association continues to have a strong Junior association. Around 400 Juniors met in Greensburg, PA for their Annual Convention in the beginning of February. As we watch them throughout
the year, whether it is showing cows, competing in judging contests or other Junior activities we see an excitement and enthusiasm that inspires us all. They always represent Pennsylvania very well when competing at National contests and we wish them well this summer in New York. Another vital part of our association is our membership campaign. We finished our 2015 fiscal year with 2551 members. We have businesses sponsoring coupons for our member for several years. This year they are Richard Mellinger Semen Sales, Select Sire, Inc., STGenetics, Hoobers Inc., Paul B. Zimmerman, Nasco, Fisher & Thompson, Inc., and Holstein World. I would encourage you to thank them personally when you deal with them. Our state association is made strong by each one of you. You volunteer for county committees and boards and this is the grass roots of our state and our county association back home. I wish to thank those who helped make my presidency a lot easier. My committee chairs consisted of: Youth
Chair – Meranda Sellers, Sale Chair – Mike Yoder, Show Chair – Jeff Ansell, Activities Chair – Jim Houser, Hall of Fame – Pat Kitchen, and Nominating Chair – Dale Wack. Thanks for all of your contributions the last 2 years. I also wish to thank our Executive Committee consisting of Tim Sturgeon, Marlin Schultz, Dwight Stoltzfus, Marcus Martin, Connie Troutman and Al Calkins along with officers, Kevin Holtzinger, and Ken Umble. I remember the Presidents fireside chats at the 100 Anniversary Celebration and how the former Presidents credited their Executive Committee for all the leadership and progress. I too can attest to that. Thanks! I also wish to thank Ken for all he does. He keeps our association running smoothly with all his meetings, taking care of the Juniors, cleaning heifer pens at the farm and so many other things too many to mention. Our staff of David, Ken, Leslie and Tracy is second to none. All the years I have known Ken and David, I have never heard them complain. Lastly, I wish to thank each and every one of you for your support of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association. I challenge each of your to be a person of value. Thank you and God Bless, Sincerely, Alan Hostetter

Pennsylvania Junior Holstein “PAL” of the Year The “PAL” Award is to recognize an adult leader, parent or friend who is always there for the youth program. The “PAL” Award is designed to thank an individual for their leadership, influence, and help in developing an outstanding youth program. Nominations for the award come from Junior Holstein members and the final selection of the winner is done by the Junior Executive Jennifer Dickey Committee. This year’s recipient of the “PAL” award is Jennifer Dickey, Espyville, PA. Jennifer has been active in Pennsylvania Junior Holstein programs both as a Junior member and for over 18 years a leader of the Crawford County Junior Holstein Association. Her interest in Junior Holstein started as a young member going to Holstein events with her parents. She became active in the Junior Association and attended the first split Junior Convention in 1989 and has not missed a Junior Convention since. She became active as a leader for the Crawford juniors where she encourages members to be involved in many different programs, urging them trying different contests and activities. Jennifer has served on six Junior Convention planning
committees, chairing different aspects of the Junior Conventions. She also served on the planning committee of the 1995 National Junior Convention hosted in Pennsylvania. Jenny has served on the state Youth Committee and has had input into programs and contests over the years. She has served as a 4-H Dairy leader for many years and has helped with dairy bowl and dairy judging teams in Crawford County. She has served on the Crawford County Board of Directors. Jenny works with her family on Three Pines Farm where they have housed many animals for junior members who do not live on a farm, giving them the opportunity to participate in the show ring. Jenny is a great supporter of show and sale activities in Western Pennsylvania and is always willing to give a hand to any young member in need. Jennifer has the knack for making youth feel welcome and inspires them to reach beyond their limits. She is a true leader, making sure everyone feels important and needed. She encourages participation in youth activities of all descriptions. Jennifer understands that the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow and her efforts have been greatly appreciated by many Junior members. The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association is pleased to recognize Jennifer Dickey as our 2016 “PAL” Award winner. We want to thank Jennifer for her tireless efforts on behalf of the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein membership.

portunities for educational workshops and a lot of time for fun. Our young people are recognized yearly at the National level for outstanding work. We are fortunate to have Jacob Shaffer serving as chairman of the National Junior Activities Committee. The 1st All-Pennsylvania Contest was held in 1955 and our State Show had 160 entries. Our present show program includes two state shows, six regional shows and around 20 local shows recognized by the state association. We have included a 3 Year Old Futurity Program that was added in 1981. I want to acknowledge the dedicated work of your office staff, Tracy Wellar and Leslie Peters. They have both spent many years working with our members; they enjoy the challenges and responsibilities with an excellent attitude. David Lentz continues to move in many directions as he selects cattle for sales and is always looking for heifers to meet our domestic sale needs. I appreciate the efforts of all three of your staff members; they understand what it takes to keep the Association moving ahead every day. As we look down the road toward 2020 and hosting the Holstein USA Convention, it will be an opportunity to showcase our cattle, communities, history, friendly attitude and hospitality to Holstein enthusiasts from around the country. We will be looking for volunteers to help, please step or say yes if you are asked. To my wife Beth, and my children Christopher, Kristen, Michelle and Zack I want to say thank you for continuing to support me, offering suggestions and ideas and always a hug when I get home. Agriculture has an ever changing landscape. Farmers if nothing else are adaptable to change, or you would not be here today. We are looking at an era when farming decisions are driven by economic situations around the world, not just around the block. We also have people and organizations outside of our industry that want us to do things “the right way”, we need to all be educators in our communities and be open to share our knowledge of modern dairy farming. We need to positive about our industry and the many opportunities that are available to those who want to remain involved and active. We need to work together, not just
when good things happen, but when we face those tough and exhaustive times. We can continue as a member service organization as long as you, the membership support your leaders in their efforts to develop programs and activities that will help us all improve our home operations and the industry as a whole. By working together now, we can look for opportunities in the future.

We couldn’t be prouder of our three children and all that they have accomplished this past year. Lily completed her first year of both 4-H and Junior Holstein project work. available to view for 3 weeks. This is a great opportunity for each and every advertiser to expand their reach to other breeders around the country. Thoughts and prayers to go out to the families of Jeanne Y. McKown, Richard C. Waybright and Mahlon L. Lehman for the loss of their family member. Continue to pray for the many families, friends and neighbors who are experiencing health and/or hard times. The next issue of Profiles will be June 2016. This issue will be a review of the Adult PA Holstein Convention that was held in Greensburg, PA at the end of February. A great time was had by all especially when “The Donald” Yoder paid us a visit during the Fun Auction event. Pictures will be in the next issue. We will be sending extra issues of the June Profiles to the National Holstein Convention so make plans today to advertise your herd, spring show winnings, purchases or sale consignments. Ads are due May 20th with camera-ready ads due May 28th.

The county annual meeting and banquet schedule is beginning to heat up. It is my desire to attend as many as possible. My term as president will be done in February, so I want to give it my all until then. I just need to know ahead of time. Every banquet, annual meeting or picnic that I have attended has been a great opportunity to see different parts of the state, meet many wonderful people and promote the best state organization in the country — The Pennsylvania Holstein Association.

Milk is one of the most requested items at food banks,
yet is it rarely donated. As such, hungry families in local communities are missing out on the essential nutrients milk provides. Your dairy checkoff programs – Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association and Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program – are working to change that through two programs – Fill a Glass with Hope® and The Great American Milk Drive®. Both programs provide a means for food banks to purchase milk for the families they serve.
Two programs, oNE goaL: Providing fresh milk to families in need.
How milk Is provided through The great american milk Drive®
Food banks distribute vouchers for milk to local food pantries for families in need
How milk Is provided through Fill a glass with Hope®
Funding provided through grants, corporate sponsors and individual donations
Food banks purchase milk directly from processors
