From the Editor The calendar says spring and Mother Nature is inching her way toward it! We have had an aboveaverage winter for snow here in Homer, all in hopes of green grass and a bountiful year ahead. If you have picked up a copy of the News at Spring Dairy Carousel, I hope you enjoy it and see all the fantastic support our breeders put forth each MICHAEL McCAFFREY month for the News. Many of our advertisers will be exhibiting at Carousel, others consigning to the sales, still other just there to enjoy all the activities of busy days in Syracuse. The News always welcomes advertising and promotion from beyond New York’s boundaries and we invite your visits to our farms as well. We are called The Cradle of the Breed for historical reasons, but that title still fits the Empire State today. New York Spring Dairy Carousel is such a grand event with something for everyone, be it shows, sales, junior activities, or simply the camaraderie of socializing with friends. Not being from a farm, I started to attend Carousel as a teenager, on my own. I would go to see the show cattle and admire these great bovines I had seen in magazines. I would observe the masterful care of those who owned them. I would sit through the sales which were in a very different format than the sales of today. The Calf Sale had hundreds of calves, lined up by sires, so that breeders could draw their own conclusions about them. The State Sale had the cow portion and the bred heifer portion. Executive Manager’s
Report
KELLY REYNOLDS
Happy Spring Holstein Enthusiasts, Even if we have snow on the ground and chilly temperatures it’s the first official day of Spring as I am writing this and I am going to take advantage of it. We have had some crazy New York weather the past few weeks and our thoughts are with any of the farmers who lost barns, cattle, out buildings, feed, hutches, and had any damage to their farms due to wind, snow, or both. The resilience of dairymen and women across the country never ceases to amaze me. This past month I’ve had some wonderful opportunities to meet more members and interact with Holstein breeders around the state. The Junior Executive Committee met in March in Ithaca, we had a great weekend of planning and fun. What an awesome group of youth to work with my first year as Executive Manager, they have been so helpful. The committee is made up of some veterans and new faces that are eager to lead our junior members. The committee has decided to auction off some donated items to benefit youth attending National Convention. With National Holstein Convention being held in Washington this year costs are higher than normal. The JEC wanted to show their support to their peers by raising money for those representing our Jr. Association in Washington. There is more information on the items being auctioned off later in the News. The JEC will be out at Spring Show in full force, be sure to introduce yourselves, check out the promotion booth, and watch them in action! We are full steam ahead in preparing for Spring Dairy Carousel and the Spring Sale. We have around one-thousand entries for the show with a few coming in here and there. If this is your first New York Spring Show I would like to welcome you to the event, if you’re a Carousel Veteran I’d like to welcome you back. You’ve probably seen the schedule for the show but here are a few more details about what’s happening at Carousel: • Showmanship will be Friday, April 7 at 9 a.m. in the coliseum. While you do have to own or officially lease the animal you are exhibiting, it is open to all youth whether you are from New York or not, out of state participants have a $5.00 10 - NYN April 2017
entry fee. The Master Showman Showbox award is generously donated by the Conard Family in memory of Willis Conard. • The Richard Keene Memorial Judging Contest will follow showmanship at 11:30 a.m. with registration being at 11 a.m. or immediately following showmanship if runs later than 11. The judging contest is made possible through an Ag Enhancement grant from Farm Credit East. No pre-registration is required and there are divisions for Junior, Seniors, and Collegiate contestants. This is a great way to kick off your Dairy Judging Season! • Following the Judging Contest is the Crossbrook Jersey Jubilee Sale in the Warm Up ring at the Fairgrounds. The Jersey Jubilee features around 75 lots of high quality Jerseys that are eligible to show in the 2017 Spring Dairy Carousel Jersey Show on Sunday the 9th. It looks like a fantastic group of Jerseys are put together for the sale. • If Colored Breeds strike your fancy the 2017 Protein Breeds Sale will be held Friday night in the Poultry Barn featuring Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, and Guernsey Cattle. The chairpersons for these sales have been letting me know they have some exciting consignments coming together and it will be your go-to spot for nice heifers and calves. • Saturday morning kicks off the show portion of Carousel with the 2017 New York Spring Junior Holstein Show at 9 a.m. judged by Carl Phoenix of Ontario. The 2017 Spring Dairy Carousel Ayrshire Show begins at noon with Jeff Stephens of Ontario placing the Ayrshires. In the other ring will be the 2017 Spring Dairy Carousel Guernsey Show officiated by Mike Berry of Oregon. • 4 p.m. Saturday in the Poultry Barn will be the 2017 New York Spring Holstein Sale, this is one of the best Spring Sale line-ups ever. We will be offering cattle from breed leading genomic families, All-American dams, and deep pedigreed cow families. I can’t tell you enough how exciting this line up is. Come see and bid for yourself!! • New York Juniors, there will be a Pizza Party on Saturday night sponsored by American Dairy Association North East and activities in the Coliseum. New this year for Juniors will be a White Pants Swap where you can bring in white pants that don’t fit any more and exchange them for a pair that does, thanks to the Marshmans for organizing this. • Sunday morning at 8 a.m. the 2017 Spring Dairy Carousel Red & White Show will start in the coliseum with Carl Phoenix returning to the ring to place them. At 9 a.m. the 2017 Spring Dairy Carousel Milking Shorthorn Show will be judged by Mike Deaver of Wisconsin. Rounding See REPORT - Page 15

Long before the days of widespread ET and IVF work, those treasured pedigrees and outstanding individuals commanded prices this kid could only watch with wide eyes. And of course the New York Spring Holstein Show and the Junior Show had the best of the best vying for honors. Famous cows with the best leadspersons in the business made for excitement class after class. I loved going to Carousel and I learned so much because of it. I tell all this hoping that attendees this year will invite someone to ride along with them. Maybe it’s the nearby farm kid who is not very connected with registered dairy cattle who might enjoy seeing the premier individuals of every breed. Maybe it’s the 4-H kid or junior Holstein kid or the FFA kid who has never been to an event like this and probably never will unless you make the offer. Maybe it is your neighbor who wants to have better cattle and just needs the impetus to get started. New York Spring Dairy Carousel draws people and cattle from all over North America. It is an opportunity for youth to meet others who share their passion for the dairy industry, to participate in judging contests, and meet industry personnel. These are all good reasons to extend the offer and say, “Hey, would you like to come along with us to Syracuse?” Throughout this issue of the News, there are sale ads of every kind – consignment sales, local club sales, tag sales, and herd dispersals. The opportunities to tie into some of the greatest genetics known to us today are going to be offered in every corner of the state in the next few months. I hope that you can take advantage of what is selling, be it high genomics, a potential show winner, something from a deep maternal line, or just a good, profitable individual that is going to be an asset
in your herd. Looking ahead in the News, we will again feature the breeders and cattle of Northern New York in the May issue. I always enjoy my time in the North Country and there are a lot of fantastic herds up there (of every color!) May is also the Red & White Issue and the perfect opportunity to promote your premier Red & Whites. Ad deadline is Friday, April 14. The June issue will again have a full wrap up of Carousel as well as head to the National Convention in Washington. June’s issue is a terrific time to advertise with Convention goers picking up a copy of the News or taking one for the long plane ride home. I would enjoy working with you. Have a great, safe spring. See you by the show ring or the sale ring.
An Oregon Invitation to National Convention-Goers Former Delaware County resident Allan Hanselman, President of the Oregon Holstein Association, welcomes everyone headed to Washington State this June for the National Holstein Convention to spend some time enjoying the beauty and dairies of Oregon. Allan is willing to help set up herd visits and sightseeing for those who would be interested. The airport in Portland, Oregon is about three hours from the National Convention in Bellvue, Washington. “There’s a lot to see in Oregon,” Allan says enthusiastically and he invites New Yorker’s headed west to contact him at 503-580-5632.

some new things and go out of your comfort zones! Good luck to everyone who will be at Carousel, and look for some results and recaps from the show in next month’s magazines. Have a great April everyone, and I will see you next month! Hello Juniors! Happy Grilled Cheese Month! I am sure that you are all very excited about this month’s many activities, I know that I am! Also, spring is now upon us, which means that warmer weather is rounding the corner. I am more than ready for green grass, flowers, and sunshine to Allison Herrick be here for good. I am writing this as I sit in the Sale barn here at Cornell, and it definitely makes me realize how much of an impact the dairy industry has had in my life. I have met countless friends, made many memories, and have had multiple opportunities because of my involvement with dairy cattle. It makes me very happy that I have the opportunity to continue to participate in clubs and activities here at school that keep me so close to my passion for dairy and agriculture! Also, Spring Carousel is upon us, and I hope that everyone takes on a few opportunities that the Junior Association coordinates. There are showmanship and judging opportunities for the members to participate in. It is a great opportunity to learn, and can help with cattle selection in the future. I know that I learned a lot through dairy judging. I always told my 4-H educators that I would never judge cows and that I didn’t like it at all. After breaking that promise, I can promise you that it is so worthwhile to learn just what to look for when picking out cattle. It has helped me select which animals to bring to the fairs for that year, as well as helping me with my mating selections to help produce even better calves! You never know, you may find out that you have an eye for cows, have a great time, learn something new, or all of the above! Also, perfect your showmanship abilities, and show off the hard work you have put into training your animals. Showmanship will be a lot of fun, and I hope that a lot of you decide to take part in it! Even if you choose to not participate in these activities, or were unable to participate, look for them next year! Also, there will be many opportunities this summer to try judging and showmanship through 4-H, FFA, and even at other shows and events. I really encourage all of you to go and try something new. Going off of that idea, I want to challenge each of you to try something new this year. Whether it is trying judging for the first time, doing showmanship at a show other than your county show, or doing a different contest at convention next year, I want to see more people try 12 - NYN April 2017

C.U.D.S. Spring Classic Buyers from nine states and Ontario took home the 72 full lots for an average of $2603 at the 3rd C.U.D.S. (Cornell University Dairy Science Club) Classic in Ithaca, NY on a very cold, snowy March 11. The active live crowd and internet via CowBuyer saw a fine group of deep pedigrees, high genomics, and some sensational show prospects offered, and no doubt many will be heard from again in the coming months. Several of the high GTPI individuals found their way to the top of the buyers’ list, including the $6,000 top, Ri-Val-Re Modesty Marge-ET, a +2698 GTPI Modesty daughter from a Josuper dam backed by 11 generations of VG & EX dams. A maternal sister to the #2 PTAM & #2 Protein heifer in the breed, the November ’16 calf carried impressive credentials of +856NM +95F +58P +2.14T and +200FE. Consigned by Jerry Jorgensen, Webberville, MI, she was the choice of Aurora Ridge Dairy, LLC, Aurora, NY. Also headed to Aurora Ridge was the day’s second-high seller at $5,800, another Modesty daughter sold in absentia from Clear Echo Farm LLC, Schuylerville, NY. Clear-Echo Modesty 3963ET is +2710 GTPI +1444M +85F +47P +852NM +7.3PL +2.3DPR and was backed by a recently-fresh Alta1stclass daughter. The next dam is an EX-91, EXMS DOM Shamrock with 47,950 3.9 1863 3.0 1428, then there were five more VG dams in the same cow family that produced Breed-great “Bookem.” Megan & Bradley Hill, Bristol, VT, went to $5,400 to own Ri-Val-Re Hopes Holly-ET, +2726 GTPI +803NM +2327M +83F +67P +2.47T and sired by Jedi. Her high-profile Seagull-Bay Supersire-ET dam, SwampyHollow Hope (VG-85), had produced over $600,000 in offspring in 2015 and she herself had sold for $75,000 in the Ri-Val-Re Sale. The next 10 dams were all VG & EX, many GMD and/or DOM. Jerry Jorgensen was the seller. Maurice & Justine Kelsey, Canastota, NY paid Jamie Crawford & Reflex Genetics $5,200 for Ri-Val-Re Modsty Harriet-ET, another fine Modesty daughter out of Swampy-Hollow Hope (VG-85) with GTPI +2702 +820NM +1501M +61F +47P +8.1PL +3.2DPR +2.36T. Rounding out those selling for over $5,000 was yet another Ri-Val-Re-bred calf, Ri-Val-Re Jedi Tandy-ET, a late December Jedi daughter ranked at +2682 GTPI and a very impressive +75P +180FE. Her dam is a Damaris daughter due with first calf in June, followed by a VG85 granddam, then a long line of great cows back to Ralma Juror Faith (EX-91 GMD-DOM). Another of Jerry Jorgensen’s consignments, she was one of three head taken by Sexing Technologies, Navasota, TX. A judging clinic and contest started the day off for youth, followed by the auction. Dave Rama handled the auctioneer’s gavel and Daniel Brandt and Kevin Ziemba highlighted the pedigrees. Accepting bids were Tom Harkenrider, Don Welk, and Ray LeBlanc, with Jordan Siemers serving as sale chairman. The cattle were beautifully fit and presented by the Cornell students. Merry Rama and Jeanie Nichols were at the clerk’s table. A partial buyers’ list follows. 14 - NYN April 2017

Good Things Happening at Ranway Farms When Shane Schultz was named New York’s Outstanding Young Breeder in 2015, Presenter Ed Facer stated, “Shane has always had the passion for the cow side of the business. Along with (his) personal accomplishments with breeding cattle, he has shared his passion with the youth of Wayne County, serving as judging coach for the past 18 years. As the judging coach he has been able to coach and inspire youth to compete at the state and national level and he has had many team members win and do extremely well over the years at all levels of competition.” Those words sum up the man who is full partner with his father, Wayne, at Ranway Farms LLC in Marion, New York. Shane and his dad farm 400 acres and milk 108 cows currently, boasting a herd average right at 26,000 lbs. of milk and 900 lbs. of fat. Outstanding type is a hallmark in the herd, with several Excellents currently in the barn and 31 homebred Excellent “Ranways” to date. Steve Hyman works with the crops and feeding and the farm employs a couple teenagers parttime. In addition to the dairy, they have developed a good freezer beef market, selling about 15 head a year in a continuously-growing market. Shane and his wife, Shannon, have three children: Adam (12), Lexi (10), and Connor (7). Shane and Shannon, an LPN who grew up on her family’s Headline Farm in Hubbardsville, both graduated from SUNY Morrisville, though they never met until later. After graduation, Shane worked the show circuit and was part of the Pamtom team when Shannon came to show Ms Headline Stabuck Neva in 1995. This enthusiastic young couple was an integral part of this past January’s New York Holstein Convention in Syracuse. Their inherited energy and passion for the Registered Holstein business from both sides of the family is now being passed 18 - NYN April 2017

on to the next generation both on the farm and off. Shane is not only a dairy judge and coach, but he is also the dairy bowl coach for Wayne County’s Junior Holstein Club, a group that has seen a burgeoning growth and resurgence of late. “Several families that went through the Junior Holstein program now have kids and they are getting involved.” It is great to see indeed.
Type is a Strong Priority
Wayne and Shane have always had a love for great type cows and today’s herd reflects that. A walk through the herd shows a group of big, tall, large-framed cows with fantastic udders. The herd has great feet & legs and moves easily through the freestall barn. The cows are housed in two milking groups – a 2-year-old group housed in the older part of the facility and a 2nd calf & older group that is housed in a very bright, airy barn with grooved rubber flooring built about five years ago. The herd is fed a TMR but also receives dry hay first thing in the morning before milking “to start their day.” Shane reasons that the cows tend to jump to their feet and head right to the dry hay and if they do not, it may be a signal that they need some sort of attention.
It is also a great help in detecting heats. A unique aspect of the farm’s calf nutrition is that in addition to hay & grain, the calves “get a bit of high cow TMR,” Shane states, and the results are well-grown, fancy, aggressive calves that hopefully develop into great cows. One of the great homebred cow families, the “L” family, descends from an Encore daughter of MDCarrollton BC Lizzy (3E-94-DOM), a Boulet Charles daughter who founded a family that branched from Sam Simon’s Sam-Sim herd to many good herds around New York and beyond. Sam-Sim Encore Lia-ET (VG-88) was given to Adam when he was 2 ½ years old and today, there are over 20 members of this cow family in the herd. Though not in this cow family, Ranway Attic Laddie (EX-91) is one of the oldest daughters of Allyndale-I Attic-ET and is a most impressive 8-yearold with a sweeping, deep rib and uphill run. She is bred to Doorman. Regancrest Dundee-ET worked very well at Ranway, leaving four Excellent daughters including Ranway Dundee Mushroom-ET (EX92), a great show cow in her day. A VG-87 Dundee, Ranway Dundee Plum (VG-87) is one of the wellpreserved, great framed older cows
here. A cow with a bright future and one of Shane’s favorites is Ms Angelina Doorman Abie (VG-88), one of Doorman’s oldest daughters and backed by 10 generations of Excellents, milking extremely well this year after making 25,718 3.6 923 3.2 821. She is owned with Dean & Carrie Sharp. Shane admits he has taken a somewhat different approach in his sire selection of late. First, he has emphasized more milk production. “While we have always been mostly type oriented,” he explains, “we have had the revelation in the last couple years that we need to have some milk in these 2-year-olds!” Shane likes to see bulls that are +1000M and he has concentrated on using a few bulls heavily in order to bring more uniformity into the herd. His strategy: buy 40 or 50 units of a bull – like Sully Hart Meridian-ET (Toystory x Planet) – and get a large number of daughters. He can already see the results in the Meridian calves and heifers on the farm. Currently seeing heavy use is Stantons Capital Gain-ET (McCutchen x Observer). “In addition, you get a much better deal on 50 units of semen than you do on 10!” Another advantage he notes is that the herd is sired by overall better bulls, increasing their marketability.
Boarders and Partners
Several breeders house cattle at Ranway Farms, either owned in partnership or housed as boarders. “Finding a good hotel” in no easy venture, but Sharps, Mike Putman, Hal Lusk, Ron Smith, Joe & Ellen Haner, Barb Young, the Andrew family, and others have all found a grand home for their best cattle at Ranway Farms! Shane’s meticulous care of the herd and breed knowledge, as well as love of developing good cows, all come together in outstanding cattle housed here. Many of the Breed’s most famous maternal lines are represented. One of the true standouts, owned with Mike Putman, is Ernest-Anthony Sid Treva-ET (EX-
94), a 5th generation Excellent in the C Alanvale Inspiration Tina (EX-95 GMD-DOM) family. Treva, last year’s High Honorable Mention All-New York 4-Year-Old and Grand Champion at the Cortland Classic, is a most-impressive individual. She sports a spectacular udder and is long, tall, dairy, and moves well on her feet & legs. She is currently bred to Solomon and Mike & Shane discuss using IVF on her later this lactation. Treva has a beautifullyuddered Brady 2-year-old in the milking herd that has her height and length and only needs time to develop into a fantastic cow. Treva also has a December ’16 Byway calf that is long and stretchy that will be part of the tag sale. Joe & Ellen Haner own a fine Goldwyn daughter, Oakfield Goldwyn RandiET (EX-91), who has three records over 30,000m and completes 15 generations of Excellents back to Audrey Posch (EX-93-GMD). Hal Lusk has two Gold Chip daughters that really catch your eye including Butlerview GC Arkansas-ET (VG-87, 2y), a massive-framed, black 2nd calf heifer out of an EX-92 Atwood then Ms Kingstead Chief Adeen-ET (2E-94-DOM).
A Tag Sale
Shane’s decision for he and his family to host a tag sale came in several steps. Last fall, he sold a group of bred heifers for a price well below what he had hoped for, especially given the cost of raising them. “So I decided we would try to sell calves at a younger age for higher money,” he states. When he talked to the breeders who board and own cattle at Ranway, they all concurred that it was a venture worth trying. And so the plans began. Mike Putman worked on the catalog which will include 33 head for The Price is Right Tag Sale on Saturday, April 22 at the farm. The day will offer mostly calves with a few yearlings. Some of the consignments are Ranway’s, some are owned by partners or in partnership, and only three are from off the farm. Most of the dams of the
offerings are on the farm as well and Shane believes many of them will continue to increase in score. To be part of the sale, there is a fixed entry fee and there is no commission. “About half of the animals offered will be under $2000 – nice, wellgrown heifers, some with lots of pedigree! And we want to have calves and heifers that are affordable to the kid looking for something for the county fair and beyond.” There will be several March calves and a big group of December calves sired by Byway, California-Red, Integral, and others. Included in the fall calves are members of the “Apple” and “Blackrose” families. Adding further interest to the group is the fact that there will be several Red & Whites offered. A big part of the day will be workshops for youth held in three sessions. John Winchell, who does the farm’s nutrition work, will be an instrumental part of those. Included will be tips on fitting, feeding show calves, and many other aspects of showing will be the thrust of the talks. Workshops will be held in the morning. The tag sale begins at 9:30 a.m. and lunch will be sold by a local 4-H club. The day will conclude by 3:00 p.m. The day promises to be both educational and fun for youth of all ages and hopefully many of them leave with their show calves and heifers for this summer’s shows as well as useful skills in caring for and preparing show cattle. Sellers hope to have a successful day as well, merchandizing some of their genetics and providing kids with a solid foundation for their future with Registered Holsteins. No doubt, April 22 will be an enjoyable, active day at Ranway Farms with fun for all ages. The opportunity to tour this wellrun operation, see the impressive Ranway herd, and interact with the Schultz family makes the trip and time invested worthwhile. Combined with a tag sale that offers promising show prospects intertwined with strong maternal lines and practical instruction, it’s an exciting new venture for which many people have great hopes. Dairying for Tomorrow Award Seeking Nominations Award to Highlight Local Dairy Farms with Unique and Innovative Practices American Dairy Association North East (ADA North East) has created the Dairying for Tomorrow award to recognize local dairy farmers and showcase on-farm practices that will help sustain the dairy industry now and in the future. Nominations are being accepted in three award categories: animal care, community/consumer outreach and environmental stewardship. Dairy farms in the ADA North East region of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and northern Virginia are eligible for nomination. “Despite the challenges we face with public misinformation, dairymen and women are doing a lot of things right on our farms every day. We have a valuable story to share and incentives, such as the Dairying for Tomorrow award program, encourage us to take that leap of faith, recognizing our efforts,” said Crystal Grimaldi, Ideal Dairy Farm, 2016 Dairying for Tomorrow award winner. “We ALL strive to use best management practices every day, leaving our farms better today than they were yesterday and Dairying for Tomorrow highlights our efforts.” “I encourage all dairy farmers in the American Dairy Association North East region to participate in this program to tell the story and continue the dairy industry’s adventure to the future!” added Grimaldi. The award will recognize up to 24 regional winners in eight regions within the ADA North East service area. The overall winner in each category will each receive a $1,000 donation of their choice of dairy products to their regional food bank, or towards the implementation of a smoothie program in their local school. Overall winner will also receive a video and photo shoot of their farm. The honorable mention
in each category will receive a photo shoot of their farm. Nominations will be accepted through April 30, 2017. Farmers may nominate themselves, or an organization, neighbor or colleague may nominate a farm. For more information, and to submit nominations, please visit
www.dairyspot.com/dairyingfor-tomorrow. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of judges. Winners will be selected in May 2017, notified by June 15, 2017, and awarded in August during the Dairy Day breakfast at New York State Fair or Ag Progress Days in Pennsylvania.

A Visit to Mac-Mara Holsteins With Horace Backus
I have had the pleasure of traveling with Horace Backus several times over the past couple years. To say that these trips are enjoyable is to delve into gross understatement. On each journey, I get an education in Holstein history and lineage as well as a taste of what a lifetime of involvement with Registered Holsteins and breeders has been like. I enjoy every minute with a friend who not only knows good cows but has a real appreciation for the work and intelligence that it took to breed them. Recently, Horace and I ventured to Mac-Mara Holsteins, Charlie & Ken McEvoy and their families, in Marathon on a sunny March 13. No stranger in Holstein circles, Charlie was named New York Active Master Breeder in 2009 and has been a familiar face in New York Holstein leadership as well as the lead strap of some of the greatest cows ever to grace the tanbark. Though longtime friends with Charlie, Horace had never been to Mac-Mara and he was, to say the least, impressed with the exceptional individual type (BAA 113.5) but also the depth of pedigrees found throughout this fantastic herd. Signs above the cows listed 4, 5, and 6 generation maternal lines all scored Excellent, most of them homebred. The Mac-Mara herd looks good every day of the week, but it shone especially bright the day of our visit as Ken had been clipping in preparation for their hosting the Cortland County Holstein Club’s annual barn judging meeting which always draws a big crowd. Standing in the front box stall is herd matriarch Busholm Eclip Ken Milkshake (3E-95), the massive-framed 15-year-old Ladyholm Eclipse-ET daughter that has made so many friends around the country through her own show ring winnings as well as in her transmitting ability through numerous, high-scored daughters. Milkshake is owned with Richard Green, Bill Van Skiver, & Dan Mc Garr. A good percentage of the Mac-Mara herd are Milkshake family members including her Talent daughter at the opposite end of the barn, Ms Talent Shimmer-ET (2E94), incredibly tall, long, and so well-preserved for her 10 years. To be the “end stall cow” is not easy feat at Mac-Mara and a family favorite fills that first stall - Miss Mango Margarita (EX-90), a big, strong Patience Sholine Contender-Red daughter out of Ms Goldwyn MargaritaET, a 94-point Goldwyn daughter of Milkshake. A beautiful cow with a nice uphill run, Margarita was 1st senior 3-year-old & Reserve Grand Champion at last year’s Cortland Classic. Two more cows in close proximity to Margarita are Mac-Mara To Tiny Dancer (EX-92, dry), a beautifullybalanced Rietben Tee Off-ET daughter owned with Syd McEvoy, who was busy with the veterinarian getting sale cattle health work done. Tiny Dancer completes 30 - NYN April 2017
Charlie McEvoy, Horace Backus, Ken & Lydia McEvoy and daughter Cara.
four generations of Excellents in the “D” family that has been exceptionally prolific in turning out good cows generation after generation. Syd and his son Matt own Pooledale Roy Anna (EX-93), a Roylane Jordan-ET daughter who has shown extremely well and finished just under 40,000m last year. A very correct cow with admirable width throughout and a spectacular udder, Anna completes six generations of VG & EX back to the great Frogmore herd of Wes & Dorothy Engst in Aurora. Another of the great-framed cows here with a famous pedigree is an EX-92 Goldwyn daughter of Shoremar S Alicia-ET (3E-97), owned with Dev Hurley. A fantastic group of young cattle promise great things for the future here. McEvoys consign a good number of calves to sales each spring in addition to selling a few privately. Several we saw were headed to sales. A really nice red Diamondback calf at the heifer barn down the road from the main barn looks to be a good competitor in this year’s fall calf class. Mac-Mara Diamnd ForeverRed is out of Mac-Mara Conted Adele-Red (EX-92), another top Contender daughter here, owned by Lydia. Ken & Charlie are quite pleased with their calves by Mr Hotstuffs Hypnotic-ET (Windbrook x Hotstuff), Awesome-Red, Brokaw, and Gold Chip to name a few. A really nice line of bred heifers in the cow barn are sired by Armani, Atwood, Brazzle, and other top bulls. Wellgrown and fancy, they look to be fitting additions to the milking herd over the next several months. An enjoyable lunch in the village of Marathon concluded our time with Charlie and Ken. If you have never been to Mac-Mara, not far off Rt. 81 at the Marathon exit, find some time to go. Fine cows, enviable pedigrees, impeccable cow care, and Holstein enthusiasm prevail every day of the week with the McEvoys and all of us needs a shot of that now and then.

A public hearing on the question of legalizing standardization of milk in New York State was held in Albany before the Joint Legislative Committee on Imitation Food Products & Problems. State Holstein Association members present were E. J. Keane, Chairman of the Milk & Legislative Committee for the Association; President Fred Dorn, Committee members L. W. Irish and Fred Lawrence, M. S. Prescott, Editor of HolsteinFriesian World, and William Wigsten. Mr. Keane read a statement prepared by the committee which included a resolution from the previous January’s State Holstein Convention Annual Meeting which stated: Be it resolved that the New York Holstein-Friesian Association … does empower the Legislative Committee of the State Association to suggest to the joint Legislative Committee now discussing an act for the standardization of milk to include such provisions as suggested by the Milk & Legislative Committee of the New York Holstein-Friesian Association. The suggested provisions to which reference was made included a provision for permitting downward adjustment of butterfat content to 3.5%; and a provision to permit up to 2% upward adjustment of solids-notfat in market milk by the addition of concentrated skim milk of Grade A quality, or spray process non-fat solids under proper regulation. The bill in question provided basically for permissive upward adjustment of butterfat by .5% with no limit mentioned on the amount of downward standardization. It provided that standardized milk should be sold in two classes: 3.5% and 4.2% and prescribed the manner in which containers should be identified. Even though the State’s Joint Legislative Committee was not actively promoting the bill, it did not lack for supporters. Most ardent were new converts to this position – the New York State Jersey Cattle Club and its parent, the American Jersey Cattle Club. They had been zealous indeed in pressing for its adoption. The NYABC All-Star Sale held in conjunction with the 354th Earlville Sale was a big success with 32 NYABC females averaging $696. There was a top of $1075 for Arthus Hoose’s consignment, Ourhome Ormsby Lady (GP), a springing daughter of High Meadow Farm Masterpiece, sold to Francis J. Gomez and Russell L. 32 - NYN April 2017
Pattengill, Quality Farms, Lakeville, CT. Second-high seller at $1010 was Sunlea Dominator Triune, a Graymar Triune Model Bessie daughter backed by three VG dams, consigned by the Estate of Harry Constable, Walton, NY. She was the purchase of Leland & Douglas Marshall, Wintercrest Farm, Pratts Hollow, NY, with Hugh Sutherland, Chapel Bank Farm, Delhi, NY, the contending bidder. A solid cattle market showed rather consistent sale averages around the state: Robert Nice Milking Herd Dispersal ($521 avg. on 31 head), 12th Canandaigua Sale ($459 avg. on 80 head), the 351st Earlville Sale ($408 avg. on 154 head), and 353rd Earlville Sale ($475 avg. on 52 head). The newly-formed Seneca County Holstein Club held its first meeting February 10. Prior to this time, Seneca and Cayuga Counties had one club between the two. Elected into leadership roles were E. Lea James, Seward Dadson, Ray Schaffer, Duane Warne, Maynard Young Howard Schmidt, John Brooks, Jr., Norman James, Glenn Kuney, Erwin TenEyck, and Lewis Bell. Meetings were to be held the third Monday of each month, alternating between the Farm & Home Center in Waterloo and the Interlaken School. Bob Hastings paid a visit to Tara Hills Farm, Millbrook, NY, to see the 75-cow herd owned by James J. Houlahan, president of the William Esty Company, a large advertising firm in New York City. Mr. Houlahan had purchased the farm two years prior and then acquired the Overall Dairy Farms herd of Graham Loving, Mt. Airy, MD. At the time, the Overall herd was one of the premier breeding establishments in the East, having a herd average of 14,962 3.8 564 and classification scores to EX-93. According to Herd Manager Peter Nissen, the Tara Hills herd was being built around the two top cows that came with the Overall herd. One was the top classifying cow and the other was the highest producing cow. Both had sons in service or would be in service on the farm in the near future. Hastings concluded his article by stating, “These two top cows will have an influence on the future of Tara Hills and it will be interesting to see the results. Ther herd is made up of good cows and Mr. Houlahan has a good breeding program mapped out. We should be hearing more of the Tara Hills prefix in the future.” The new Conde “400” Milk Transfer System was advertised, promoting its benefits of saving lugging milk from the barn to the milk house, thereby providing the answer for the stanchion type barn without a regular pipeline to the bulk tank. The unit was entirely selfcontained and was easily cleaned according to the manufacturer. It was sold by J. C. Marlow Milking Machine Co., Mankato, MN. The New York State Thruway Authority, in a preliminary report, showed an income of $34,908,051 for 1958, an increase of 12.37 percent over that of the previous 12 months. Toll collections comprised $30,961,595 of the 1958 income with $22,135,205 received from operators of passenger cars and $8,826,390 from commercial patrons.

Just think! What would happen to the so-called national surplus of milk if: EVERYONE just returned to feeding only fresh, whole milk to all their calves for a full 90 days instead of offering expensive colored water. Result: lots healthier calves & wallets! Do yourself a huge impact and favor for future dairymen by seizing control of your personal destiny. See you show day in Syracuse!
