From the Editor After record warmth last week, everyone’s thoughts and hopes have turned to spring and here we are in March already. Excitement about New York Spring Dairy Carousel is building by the day and those who live for the shows are already gearing up for the trek to Syracuse. Early Carousel entry deadline is fast approaching on March 10. A full schedule of events and some information about this year’s judges are found on page 5. Advertised in this issue of the News are several sales and within each lineup, there will be lots of potential show winners along with MICHAEL McCAFFREY members of the Breed’s most prestigious cow families and cutting edge genomics. I have always been interested in pedigrees and I am always pleased to see a New York-bred ancestor appear in a successful animal’s lineage. Somehow, somewhere, a breeder merchandized an animal and she went on to be a great investment for her new owner. Isn’t that a big part of what we do as Registered Holstein breeders? The expense and effort of registration, testing, classification, genomic testing, picturing, and all the other “extras” have to come down to being willing to sell the good one once in a while and enjoy someone else’s success with her. A lot of cattle are going to move this spring and it is proven time and again that the advertised product sells better. If you are selling, I hope that advertising is a part of the plan because like a chain, if one of the links is broken, the chain isn’t as valuable. Similarly, if you sell a good one and she makes waves for her new owner, don’t be afraid to promote that as well. Congratulating the owner on his or her success with your genetics isn’t just “advertising somebody else’s cow.” It’s proof that YOU believe in your genetics and are willing to promote your own hard work and reputation. I am always eager to work with folks that want to be proactive and work on merchandizing through advertising. Let me know how I can be part of your strategy.

Meet the Judges: CARL PHOENIX of Phoenixholm Holsteins, Sunderland, Ontario, farms with his wife Kera and their three children – Clara, Carsen, and Weston. They have had several All-American & All-Canadian nominations and Carl was in partnership with Phoenix Brothers where they had the honor of receiving their Master Breeder Shield. Carl’s extensive judging career has taken him to such prestigious shows as the Royal Winter Fair, Irish National Show, the Wisconsin Championship Show and Victoriaville, Maxville, and Western Canadian Classic. Carl is past president of the Ontario County Holstein Club and is currently a 4-H leader in Durham West Region. JEFF STEPHENS and his wife Connie, along with their two daughters McKenna & Chelsey, reside in Troy, Ontario where he was involved with his parents’ Yellow Briar Ayrshire and Jersey herd until their recent dispersal in March ’16. The Yellow Briar herd had many All-Canadians and All-Americans in the past 30 years including two homebred Royal Winter Fair Ayrshire Champions. Jeff’s keen eye has led him to the merchandizing of several top individuals in various breeds including Vandenberg Amedeo Gorgeous (EX-97-3E), Supreme Grand Champion RAWF ’07 & ’09, Payneside Mac’n’Cheese (VG-89), AllAmerican in 2015, & Charwill Attic Marcy (EX-95), Grand Champion RAWF in 2015. His 19 years as an official judge have taken him to the Scotiabank Classic, National Jersey Show, as well as many local and National Shows.

Jeff has served on the All-Ontario and All-Canadian Holstein and Jersey committees. MIKE BERRY, Albany, Oregon, is particularly wellknown in Jersey circles, having judged the Jersey Show at the NAILE in Louisvile, KY in 2016. He has served as the Associate Judge at World Dairy Expo and this fall he will judge the prestigious Jersey show in Madison, WI. Other shows in Mike’s extensive resume include the 2014 National Jersey Jug Futurity, Wisconsin Spring Jersey Spectacular, the 2013 International Red & White Show (Associate Judge), as well as serving as a consultant for the PA All-American Dairy Show. MIKE DEAVER of Sherona Hill Holsteins, Edgerton, Wisconsin, makes his third appearance at New York Spring Dairy Carousel’s Holstein Show. Mike’s judging expertise has taken him around the world, from Ireland to Mexico, as well as to World Dairy Expo multiple times as judge for Holsteins, Ayrshires, Jerseys, and Red & Whites. He has also officiated over the Holsteins and Jerseys at the Royal Winter Fair in addition to many other prestigious dairy events across North America. Mike’s appreciation of great show cows has brought him into ownership of such tanbark greats as KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET (owned by Apple Partners), Sherona-Hill-JH Rachel, a 4th generation All-American, and Quality-Ridge Stormi Hazel, 7x All-American nominee in milking form.

Executive Manager’s

Report

KELLY REYNOLDS

Hello Holstein Friends, I hope the winter weather hasn’t been too tough on you this season. We have had a yo-yo of temperatures in Western New York with snow one day and 50 degrees the next, just warm enough to wash the show cows on occasion. I’ve had the opportunity to do some traveling in the past month and it has been great to get out on farms, talk with members, and see some great herds of cows. The end of January had me in the Tri-County region where I was able to stop in at Elm Spring, Liddleholme, Ideal Dairy, Kingsbury Kows, Clear Echo, Welcome Stock, and a quick stop at Kings Ransom. I was able to get some exceptional consignments for the Spring Sale in Syracuse and tour around the farms. I also did a Central New York trip in the middle of February going to Tiger-Lily, Joleanna, Roedale, Ovaltop, and Ridgedale. I’m making my way to Northern New York soon and am looking forward to visiting some herds there. The line-up for the spring sale this year will be impressive and I hope you can attend the sale Saturday afternoon of Carousel. There will be several show prospects for all levels of competition, bred heifers, genomic heifers that are ready to flush, and up and coming high GTPI calves. The spring sale will be a great opportunity to add some new cow families into your herd while supporting other New York breeders. It’ll be the perfect sale to buy a calf or heifer for juniors in your family as well. On my travels the type heifers I have like are the daughters of Maverick Crush, Stanton’s Capital Gain, Walnutlawn Solomon, Butz-Butler Atwood Brady, OHRiver-SYC Byway, Mr Ansly Addiction-P, Mr D Apple Diamondback, and Mr Apples McGucci. Young milking daughters of Pine-Tree Sid, Val-Bisson Doorman, Mr Apples Absolute, TOC-Farm Goldsun, and Mr Chassity Gold Chip caught my eye. On the genomic side, I saw some really square and correct calves by SSI Montross Jedi, Bacon Hill Pety Modesty, De-Su Ferdinand, and Woodcrest Mogul Yoder. Fresh cows by Bacon Hill Montross, Zahbulls AltaFirst Class, and Westenrade AltaSpring had really nice udders. It’s nice to see what bulls are working for different producers and in different operations. Across the board, it’s refreshing to see a lot of consistency in the offspring we’re breeding today. The Holstein Breed never ceases to improve and I think we are making cows and heifers to last and keep the breed moving in the right direction. Whether you are milking 10 - NYN March 2017

40 cows, 400, or 4,000, we can all appreciate square, correct, tight-uddered cows that are willing to milk and breed back. The Spring Dairy Carousel will again be a first-class event and I would like to extend an invitation to everyone to attend. Spring Show planning is in full swing. We are excited to offer the new online entry system. If you haven’t checked it out yet the web address is www. nyspringdairycarousel.fairentry.com. Entry deadline for the least expensive price is March 10th. Jen, Stacie, and I wanted to offer an easy way for both exhibitors and staff to get entries done and organized. If you have any suggestions on how we can make the site better, please let us know. The staff at fair entry have been great to work with and since we are learning all of the website’s features hopefully we can add some more details in the future. The schedule for Spring Show is on the New York Holstein website as well as the January News. We hope you can join us for some or all of Carousel either as an exhibitor, spectator, sale attendee, or sponsor. Patsy Gifford volunteered to take over the Sponsorship Chair of Spring Show so if you, your business, or your county Holstein Club would like to sponsor a class or event at Carousel let Patsy or the office know. I’ve had the opportunity to meet with our youth that are representing New York at National Convention in the DJM and YDJM contest. I would like to wish Laura Littrell, Adam King, Matthew Peck, Rachel Rouland, Shannon Sears, and Stephanie McBath good luck on their books for the DJM and YDJM contest. We have great youth in New York and will be well represented at National Convention in all of the contests. National Convention will be in Bellevue, Washington this year. It is a large financial commitment for our youth and their families to attend convention so if you can support them in any way through their fundraising efforts please consider doing so. Hotels are also filling up fast for National Convention, if you’re planning on attending and haven’t made travel arrangements yet don’t wait any longer. Ending on a different note, we are seeing some great herds throughout the country selling out this spring for some different reasons and it’s sad to see them go. On the other hand, there are some great consignment sales coming up with another opportunity to improve your herd. I mentioned earlier I think that dairy producers are breeding better cattle than ever and the Holstein breed is constantly improving. I think this spring is the time to invest in some great genetics from longstanding herds, exceptional operations, award-winning cow families, and deep-pedigreed breeding. Sales can be a sign of the times but they can also be building blocks for the future. Try to take some time this spring to get out, attend some sales, support fellow breeders and people that have common goals; to breed great cattle, make a wholesome product, and live a livelihood like no other-farming. Some days it is tough, some days it is rewarding, but you can make it so EVERY day you enjoy going out to the barn, milking your herd of cows, doing a herd check, and walking through heifers if you have cattle that are from good cow families whether you have bred them or bought them. See you this Spring, Kelly

Truly one of the greatest cows to ever call Wall Street Dairy “home,” Gerri left the herd recently at T just under 10 years of age. Her massive frame, fantastic udder, and incredible will to milk made her a favorite here. Gerri was a 9th generation VG or EX and a 7th generation over 1000 fat in the “G” family from Mar-Bil Farm, tracing to Darling-Farm Bell Ginny (VG-86 GMD-DOM). We have two very impressive Seagull-Bay Supersire-ET daughters of Gerri in the herd: Wall-St W Supersire Gloria-ET is fresh 60 days and is one of the best heifers we have ever had in the barn! Milking right at 90 lbs., she is one that catches the eye of visitors and looks to carry on her family’s traditions of type and production. Her flushmate, Wall-St Supersire Gellie-ET, is due in early March to Salt and looks terrific as well. We will keep you updated on these fantastic young cows as well as others that are furthering our W quest for deep maternal lines, profitable production, and outstanding type.

Hello, Junior Members! My name is Allison Herrick, and I will be serving you as recording secretary on this year’s Junior Executive Committee! I am very excited for this opportunity, and I hope that you enjoy my articles throughout the year! I will start with a little bit about myself! I am from the small town of Bliss, NY, with Allison Herrick my parents Will and Louise Herrick, and my sister Danielle. I grew up around my aunt and uncle’s Holstein farm, where we are currently milking around 1,100 head of Holsteins. My father is the herdsman there, so I credit him for my involvement with cows. From there I began my own herd, with registered Holsteins and Brown Swiss cattle, which my sister and I still have. From there my passion for agriculture grew! I am currently a freshman at Cornell University, majoring in animal science, with a focus in dairy science and genetics. Never would I have guessed that as a 10-year-old, I would have the opportunity to win my own calf through our 4-H. Well, Lightning was the product of all of my hard work, and as my very first cow, she lived up to everything I dreamed of and more. I became even more involved in 4-H, I became an active member of the Junior Holstein Association, and I tried just about everything in both of them! My advice to all of the members reading this: try everything you can, participate, and be an active member. It will make all the difference. I tried dairy judging, dairy bowl, speeches, jeopardy, and even branched out to other types of animals and activities in 4-H. The more you participate, the more you will get out of everything you try! On that note, I would like to thank everyone for a successful convention this year, and congratulations to everyone who competed during that eventful weekend. It was great to see everyone trying something new, having fun, and being rewarded for all of their achievements, both during that weekend and throughout the year. Also, thank you to everyone who helped make that weekend a success, including Logan Martin, the convention chair, Patsy, Kelly, and all of the volunteers, judges, and parents as well. We could not have done it without you! Keep your eyes open for some exciting events that are coming up, including the Spring Dairy Carousel in Syracuse, as well as many club sales that will be occurring here shortly! Cornell University Dairy Science Club will be having their sale in the Livestock Pavilion on March 11th, and the Cobleskill Dairy Fashions Sale

will be held on April 22nd! National Convention will be here before you know it, and this year it will be in Washington! Good luck to everyone competing out there and representing New York this year, you will do amazing! It will be a little different this year, since we are not hosting it, but it is a great travel opportunity and allows you to see dairies and scenery in other parts of the country. It is truly an amazing experience. I hope you are all looking forward to this upcoming year, because I know I am! If you ever have any questions about anything going on with the Junior Holstein Association, be sure to reach out to anyone on the committee, and we will surely be there to help you. Have an amazing National Agriculture Month this March, and I am sure that I will be seeing you at various events coming up soon. See you next month!

Committee. Thank you to Melonica Hoffer for being our Dairy Bowl coach. A special THANK YOU goes out to Patsy Gifford for all of your help through the years. Enjoy your retirement. We would like to welcome Kelly Reynolds as the new Executive Manager for the New York Holstein Association. We look forward to working with you in the future.

Tri- County Junior News By Wyatt Swatling

This past year was my second time competing at Convention. Even though I love competing and giving my speech I also love the other activities where I meet many new friends. This year I enjoyed watching the hypnotist. It was really funny. I loved watching kids from my club go up and completely embarrass themselves like Blake, Adam, and Johnny. I especially enjoyed watching my sister, Libby, “moo” like crazy and act weirder than she already is! New York Holstein Convention was very successful for the Tri-County Junior Holstein Club. We had many members attend and compete at the state level, and we have many who will be continuing on to Washington State for Nationals. Congratulations to the Junior Dairy Bowl A Team who took 1st place. Phil Rea, Libby Swatling, Adam King, and Team Captain Blake Wadsworth will be on their way to Washington for the national competition. Joining them are the following speech winners: Zane Swatling, junior prepared 2nd place winner; Chrissy Putman, intermediate prepared 3rd place winner; and Tyler Larmon, Extemporaneous 3rd place winner. In the DJM category we had the following participants: Wyatt Swatling, Nate King, Caitlyn VanDeusen, Katie Larmon, Lauren King, Libby Swatling, and Ryan Peck. O-H-M Club News By Ginny Wolfe

The O-H-M Holstein Club held their annual meeting on Saturday evening, December 3rd, at the Lake House in Richfield Springs. Club director Sue Menendez served as the chairman and made all of the arrangements. Honored guests were the club’s long-term members that included Pat & Allan Pullis [45 years], Richard Rathburn and Farm Credit East-Cobleskill [50 years], & Peter Gifford [55 years]. The guest speaker for the evening was Kelly Reynolds, newly appointed as the NYS Holstein Association Executive Director. Club President Wayne Conard presided over the evening program starting with the introduction of Kelly Reynolds who spoke about her involvement with Registered Holsteins since she was a youth. She also encouraged all the members present to participate in the NYS Holstein Annual meeting to be held in January as well as the Spring Carousel events in April at the State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. Linda Byma had prepared an evening program that contained the minutes from last year’s annual meeting, the treasurer’s report, and show and sale reports. Show and sale updates were also given by the chairmen of those events—Doug Wolfe, Show Chairman, and Jason Pullis, Sale Chairman. Junior Advisor Jessica HulaFredericks reported on the junior members activities. State Director Sue Mower gave a detailed update from the State Fall Board meeting. Her report included mention of the very successful National Convention held this summer in Saratoga Springs with over a thousand registered guests from all across the country. All events were well attended and enjoyed by those folks that participated with a record crowd attending the sale held right in the Convention Center. Sue also reported that the former NYS Holstein office building on Mitchell Street in Ithaca had been sold and office space is now rented just a short distance away on Hanshaw Road, also in Ithaca. Election of new directors was held with the secretary casting one ballot for those that the nominating committee had placed on the ballot. Newly elected directors are Dan Menendez, Otsego County, and Cyrus Conard, Montgomery County. They replaced Luke Pullis and Wayne Conard, whose terms had expired and were not eligible for re-election. Also on the Board of Directors are Brad Osborne & Sue Menendez from Otsego County; Jessica Hula-Fredericks, Ben Byma & Sue Mower from Herkimer County, Brittney Nellis & Deb Quackenbush from Montgomery County, and Garritt Sammons, Director-At-Large. Vince & Juliet Wagner have bred over 50 Excellent cows and developed many more. Their herd is one of exceptional type and production that is well worth the visit and just a short drive off of US Route 20 in Cazenovia. The annual club Spring Banquet is once again being planned by the junior club and will be held as a joint event with the senior club. Members need to be watching their mail for further information. Congratulations to Jim Canary and his family for being honored at the NYS Holstein Convention as New York’s Outstanding Young Breeder. We are all very proud of the outstanding job that Jim is doing with the Canary Dairy herd in the St. Johnsville area, following in the footsteps of both his late father and grandfather. Since Jim was an active junior member the Canary herd has made great strides in type and production as well as longevity. They recently received their 10th PBR Award with a BAA of 111.3% with the herd average of 29,810M 1045F & 932P. All accomplished on 100% homebred animals. With selective breeding practices Jim has been developing many outstanding cow families and this is a herd well worth visiting. Hope to see many folks at the spring Holstein events and certainly hoping for an early return of spring weather! Stay safe and warm!

Outstanding Young Breeders Presented by Todd Hyman

When I think of what it takes to be outstanding or successful at anything in life, it requires two things: passion and discipline. The recipient of this year’s Outstanding Young Breeder award possess both of those qualities. Passion, in that he has a love for great cows since we were freshman at Morrisville. While at Morrisville as members of the judging team we had the opportunity to tour many of the great herds this state has to offer. When visiting these herds you could tell by the questions he asked, he was becoming more inspired to breed cows like we were seeing in those herds. He took his passion for great cows and applied it to his own herd. I remember the first time that I visited his herd of cows, in the fall of 1996. As a judging team we had decided to check out the sale at Manavale and stayed the night at his parents. I remember looking through the herd and thinking that is was a solid herd of production cows, but not any extraordinary individuals that really stood out. That passion led him to breed a great herd of cows, like we saw on our trips to Expo or the Royal. Having been in charge of the matings since high school, his focus has been breeding cows with great udders, good legs, with plenty of width and strength. Discipline. Originally planning on returning to the home farm after Morrisville, life doesn’t always go as planned. Jim decided to continue his education at Cornell, where he was a member of the national champion judging team. During his time at Cornell he interned with Cargill Animal Nutrition, then after college decided to pursue a career as a dairy nutritionist. In his time there he would build a successful territory in three different areas. His discipline showed in that at every opportunity he had he was always staying active in his home farm. Whether it was weekend trips back home to help with chores or that particular cutting of baleage or using vacation time to help with spring’s work or corn harvest. His commitment to breeding a great herd of cows never wavered. Sticking to his breeding philosophy, always using proven bulls or young sires from deep cow families that produced the kind of cows he was looking for. We would often talk by phone about herds of his customers that he had visit and conversations he had had about breeding cows and daughters of bulls that he was considering using in his own program. Discipline in staying with his ultimate goal, when he returned home to work with his father and with his herd of developing great cows. I spoke with him about his first herd classification that resulted in a BAA of 101 and six Very Good 18 - NYN March 2017

cows. What are the results of 20 years of passion and discipline for breeding great cows? After the most recent classification the herd has 18 EX cows and a BAA of 111.3. Prior to him taking over the breeding decision on the herd they had bred no Excellent cows, to date their prefix has been on 34 EX cows including 6 at 92 and 4 at 93, including Canary Atley Bunny who also produced well over 350,000 lbs. of milk and is found in the pedigrees of over 1/3 of the herd. In the show ring, they bred and owned the Grand Champion of the 2013 Fonda Fair. This hard work has resulted in long-lived cows that allow for the consignment of animals to many O-H-M club sales and more recently the Harvest Sale at Cornell. One recent consignment, an Absolute daughter backed by a 93-point Redman dam, stood fourth in a very competitive Red & White senior 2-year-old class at the NY Spring Dairy Carousel. Not only do the cows look great but they produce great as well. On a high forage diet, the rolling herd average is over 29,000 lbs. of milk with a 4.0 fat and 3.2 protein. It is my great honor, to present my very good friend with this year’s Outstanding Young Breeder award, Jim Canary.

Active Master Breeder Presented by Patsy Gifford

New York Holstein’s mission statement reads “for the economic and social benefit of its junior & senior members.” In other words, “families helping friends achieve financial success and life fulfillment with the common thread, the Holstein cow.” I know of no family or life story who personifies this mission statement better. I first became acquainted with this couple in 1989. It was the same month that I scored Pamtom and put Tyrbach Elevation Twinkie up for 97. We had lots of company from the area that day and all were happy that she passed. Not long after, I was working in a barn not far away. One of the visitors who had been at Pamtom, a man never short on wry remarks, told me I used the numbers 7 & 9 quite a bit, but at Pamtom it was 97 and at his herd 79. Another memory for me from that day was that, when we were getting close to finished, Grandpa pulled up at the end of the barn in his pickup truck, and all he asked was if we were done yet. They had a good working herd of cows who weren’t real pretty but they never wavered on their dreams and goals. One year, on their annual anniversary trip to the Harvest Sale, they really liked a big, broad-rumped bred heifer, but she was a little too close to calving to know for sure what the udder was going to look like. Consigned by Dave & Sue Thompson, she was Autumn Ridge Raider Meringue, granddaughter of Col-Ray Barrett Mary, who was the start of the many, many Autumn Ridge “M” names and put the Autumn Ridge herd on the map. Someone pointed Sue out in the crowd and they had a conversation. That was the start of a lifelong friendship and Sue simply said that, if the heifer wasn’t 100%, she’d make it right. They bought the heifer and that started a succession of Autumn Ridge purchases over the years that led to the farm on the knob in Granville jokingly called Autumn Ridge East. The original Harvest Sale purchase, became EX-90, and gave her new owners 1 EX and 3 VG daughters. The EX was a 92 Outside GMD/DOM who had 9 VG and 5 EX daughters. Needless to say, Sue didn’t have to give any money back on that original purchase. I mentioned the 92-point Outside Madison cow. Sometimes a bull just really clicks in a herd and sometimes a Master Breeder just knows when to use him heavily. This couple always sets goals. They set the goal of a high producing herd of VG cows. At about the turn of the century, heavily using Comestar Outside, they reached that goal in one generation with snugger udders and better feet & legs. So, this goal-setting couple decided they could shoot for a higher producing herd of Excellent cows. About

this time, the two red headed middle sons were just realizing their love for the black and white cow. Some of you may not even know, but there are 4 sons. The oldest and youngest did their chores and respect the farm life and the values it instills, but didn’t have the passion. Both are very successful in the corporate world and are here tonight to join us as we honor their parents. The oldest flew in from Colorado. As the redheads grew in their teenage years, their parents respected their input and did everything they could to encourage, inspire, and foster their passion. They saw the local Holstein club activities and the show ring as a way to add to their Holstein circle of friends, learn from other breeders, and see how their cattle stacked up. The older of the redheads had a calf picked out in the calf pen and tied her up to show in 2000. She hanged herself one morning during breakfast in a freaky accident. When Sue Thompson heard about this, she offered to sell him a calf. Autumn Ridge Strm Murphy had a $1200 pricetag, which was all of the 12-year-old’s savings. When he thought maybe he shouldn’t spend it all on one calf, his mother said if he didn’t buy her, she would. So he did. Fast forward a year. We’re at State Fair, my first year with NYHA. A tall, gangly 13-year-old wins the winter yearling class hands down, easy, slam dunk. His win was well documented by his teary eyed mom and her camera at ringside. At that time, there was only one National Jr. Holstein show and it was in Louisville, KY. Each year, New York took a selected herd to represent our juniors. I asked Mom if her son and his winter yearling NYN March 2017 - 19

could be part of our state herd. As with everything, she said she needed to talk with her husband and son before they made a decision. In early November, the heifer was on the trailer headed south and a scared stiff 13-year-old was loaded in the car with me headed to Louisville. Show day, we knew we had her ready, but the lead judge missed her. As she stood in the middle of the 2nd pull, the associate pointed her out to the lead judge. She was moved to the first line then pulled 4th. The 13-year-old showed his heart out and the heifer, as the good one will, rose to the occasion. They were moved to 3rd. And so began Murphy’s show career. The blue and purple ribbons and the love from the ringside made her known far and wide. The love, respect, and self confidence that Holstein cow instilled in her young owner can’t be measured. In 1989, a young couple with 4 little boys set goals. They wanted to breed a top herd and occasionally add a special purchase to their breeding program. As of October 2016, they have bred and/or developed 68 EX cows and another 341 VG. There are numerous GMD & DOM. They’ve received the Progressive Genetics Award for 19 years and taken numerous cows past the 200,000 lifetime mark. The 2x production on 200 cows is 25,013 milk 916 fat 775 protein. The cow families grow and grow; Autumn Ridge purchases were key with a huge contingency going back to the Mary cow developed from the original purchase and others. The Bodacious cow is a dairyman’s dream, and has 6 VG & EX daughters already in the herd and more to come. The Wendy’s & Bambi’s are the current show veterans who have taken this herd to the next level in the show ring with blues, purples, and All-New York’s, and Best 3 Females the last 2 years at State Fair and the Tri-County Holstein show and this past year at Carousel. They scored the Hat Trick this year at State Fair winning Best 3 Females and both Premier Breeder & Premier Exhibitor banners. Unique in this era of showing, they care for their cows everyday and get them ready at the

shows themselves. Having one brother who is a stay at home tremendous daily cow care man like his dad and one who is one of the best fitters in the world works really well. I think they’ve achieved their goals, but my money says that with their unified goals, ambition, and the knowledge that the next generation has the same passion, their bar will just go higher and higher. Along with accomplishments in the barn, the Master Breeder committee considers Holstein involvement. This couple volunteers at the local level nonstop, she is a key person at Carousel clerking all the shows and keeping announcer Syd McEvoy on track. She served on the State Board and Executive Committee. She was a committee chair at National Convention and was on hand all week with junior and senior activities and helping wherever needed. While we appreciate all the time they have given to NY Holstein, I’ve heard her say so many times: We’ve met so many great people through Holstein and we’ve learned so much. I mentioned the four boys. All born within five years. All athletes of no small stature, so community involvement was mainly focused around sports, youth programs, 4-H, and Junior Holstein. Everything centers around family commitment. This earned them the reputation in their community as reliable, honest, hardworking, family-centered people who could always be counted on to help others. I’ve lifted a lot of this presentation from the nomination submitted by their sons. Now I’m going to directly quote: “They have always been a team and used that approach in not only the management of the farm but in how they raised their family and lived their life. They achieved their dreams together, one day at a time, one milking at a time, and I’m not sure there are two people whose lives have been changed so much by the love of family, the Holstein cow, and this great industry.” Ladies and gentlemen, please join me as we congratulate and honor this year’s Active Master Breeder, my dear, dear friends, Bill & Regina Lundy.

Retired Master Breeder Presented by Michael McCaffrey

The word “retired” conjures up all kinds of images – a rocking chair, a golf cart, spending the winter in Florida, or picking up a new hobby. While we are here to honor the 2017 New York Holstein Retired Master Breeder, sadly none of these images quite fit him. Our Retired Master Breeder has a distinguished and colorful career with Registered Holsteins. One of his foundation animals came as an incentive to NOT fail the 5th grade. (Perhaps some of you who are parents 20 - NYN March 2017

or grandparents might keep this in mind!) A daughter Curtiss Candy Deen Superb born in 1955 developed into an 87-point cow, cementing our honoree’s quest to breed and develop great Holsteins. Accomplished in 4-H and FFA, he was passionate about showing at a young age, and our Retired Master Breeder trained under some of the best, including his lifelong mentor Hugh Oag, and he traveled well beyond his native Western New York with enviable show strings, learning the tanbark,

how to fit and care for show cows, furthering his love of great Holsteins. One of many stories our Retired Master Breeder can tell is standing 3rd in the aged cow class at the New York Spring Show in Cortland in 1970. On top was Johns Lucky Barb led by Peter Heffering, in 2nd was Don Collins with Tuckaway Tilly, our honoree, in 3rd with a homebred cow that eventually scored Excellent, and in 4th was Dave Younger with Green Banks Admiral Mooie who would go on to be All-American that year. Pretty good company to stand among – both the cows and the leadsmen – for a 25-year-old who brought only one cow to that show. Perhaps it was his mentoring by others that has inspired our Retired Master Breeder to take a particular interest in helping young people. Wayward kids who lacked direction and suitable employment could often find work with our honoree. Working side by side with them, he took the time to talk to these kids, and they listened. They talked to him, and he listened. Many of these young people changed their direction and became successful, largely because of a kind, caring man. Milking with him was a sort of “moving therapy.” His interest in young people continues today, especially in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who are learning life lessons and cow lessons from Grandpa. He has a lot to teach them, indeed. For many years a closed herd, our honoree has bred 34 Excellent cows scored to 93 points, she the Reserve Grand Champion at the WNY Spring Dairy Preview in 2015. One GM sire, 8 GMDs, and 5 DOMs have also bore his prefix. Well known in Chautauqua County for having not only a high-type herd but a high-producing herd always bred for high components, our Retired Master Breeder has spent his life striving for each generation in the barn to be better than those prior. In addition to his work at home, he was very involved with the Chautauqua Breeders group back in the 80’s and early 90’s. That close-knit group, made up of some of the finest breeders in the county, proved out some great bulls from some of the best cow families they could find. Getting local bulls proven was important to our honoree and he spent many an evening after his day’s work promoting bulls from Chautauqua Breeders. A great friend to many, our honoree knows you have to have some fun in life, and a few years back, our Retired Master Breeder joined up with buddies Bob Crowell and Tom Eccles to purchase a Goldwyn granddaughter of Gaige Highlight Tamara in their local club sale. The Goldwyn was housed by our honoree in South Dayton and she was a gentle giant and the apple of his eye at 92 points. The trio had a lot of fun flushing Waywardwin-T Gdwn Trace-ET who, like her family, has bred true for type and production. Both Bob and Tom hold our honoree in high esteem. You can tell a lot about a person by what others say about them. And the folks who know our Master Breeder best wane eloquently about his convictions, his work ethic, and his pleasant personality. Bob Crowell of Green Banks Farm calls our honoree his best friend and they were in the

2017 RETIRED MASTER BREEDER Howard Ivett of Halocrest Holsteins with his wife Lucy.

same graduating class in high school. They have never lived more than a mile and a half apart. “It’s been a joy to have him right near me. He and his dad always had fancy cows – big frames, strong front ends, wide, deepbodied cows - some of the best in the county.” His friend of many years, Onnolee Lind, says “What a kindhearted soul he is. Over and above his ability to raise and know good animals, he is a very humble person. His greatest points are his compassion for people and his cows.” Wonderful words from long-time friends, and tonight, he is joined by his wife of 43 years, Lucy. Together they have daughter Heather Gregory, married to Dave, and they have two children, Autumn and Collin. Son Kris and his wife Becky are now the next generation at the helm, breeding Holsteins with Dad’s lessons and influence. Their family is Alyssa & Rodney Spinler and their children Savannah and Sayer, along with Jocelyn Wheeler, Merle Wheeler, Trent Ivett, and Sandy Ivett. Grandpa has much to be proud of and he is. If breeding cattle truly is an art as much as a science, our honoree came by his talent and accomplishments honestly, for exactly 30 years ago at this Convention, his father, Lynn Ivett of Lynett Holsteins, was also named Retired Master Breeder. So the torch was passed, and our honoree did it proud. So join me friends, in honoring our 2017 New York Holstein Retired Master Breeder, the true Master at Halocrest Holsteins in Chautauqua County, Howard Ivett.

Food for thought … “Always go with the choice that scares you the most, because that is the one that is going to help you grow.” (Caroline Myss) Don’t worry about those who talk behind your back. They are behind you for a reason.

Friends of New York Holstein Presented by Patsy Gifford Each year, New York Holstein recognizes someone who has gone above and beyond on behalf of our Association. This award is the Friend of New York Holstein. Many people gave a great deal of time and energy to our 2016 National Holstein Convention. Two people who were absolutely key are tonight’s Friends of New York Holstein. Two very important parts of a National Holstein Convention are money and providing a great junior venue. Tonight’s Friends of New York Holstein did their jobs in spades. For those of you who know them, you’re not surprised. Strong, can-do, and get it done women who just need a challenge and then get out of their way. And, special thanks to their husbands for their support, tolerance, and patience. Our first sponsor goal was $200,000. A big number, but we felt achievable. When it was reached, $250,000 didn’t seem unreasonable. By the time we had to red flag Diedra Harkenrider, she was at $300,000. That $300,000 allowed us to subsidize all event and meal tickets more than $100,000 to make it more affordable for Convention goers and host a National Convention of the highest caliber that we could not be more proud of. And Juniors. If you know Amy Braun, you know that name is a synonym for organized. When her three were juniors, she went to National Convention year after year. She knew it inside and out. I felt she was a logical choice for Junior Convention Chair. In that role,

2017-2018 New York State Dairy Princesses Crowned Sarah Rohe, daughter of Steve & Trish Rohe of Rohe Farms, Syracuse and a senior at Marcellus High School, was crowned the 2017-2018 New York State Dairy Princess on February 21 at the Holiday Inn in Liverpool. Having served as the Onondaga County Dairy Princess since spring of 2016, Sarah will devote an additional year to promoting milk and dairy products with the American Dairy Association North East (ADANE). As state princess, she receives a $1200 scholarship and will represent ADANE at county dairy princess pageants, farm meetings, and a variety of special events. In addition, she will help train new county promoters at seminars and workshops. Sponsored by ADANE, the 54th annual coronation competed the yearlong reign of Emily Ooms of Valatie (Columbia County). Twenty-one county dairy princesses competed in the state pageant which included a personal interview, 22 - NYN March 2017

she was organized, meticulous, and creative. A year ago, she got a scary health diagnosis. Most, understandably, would have backed away from Convention to deal with their very serious issues. Not Amy. A year ago, she had most things planned and in hand. She also knew she had her tremendously supportive circle of family and friends. She never missed a beat, and the juniors had an unforgettable, fantastic Convention. It is my honor and privilege to ask Amy Braun and Diedra Harkenrider ro come forward as we recognize, honor, and thank two of my special buddies as the 2017 Friends of New York Holstein.

Thank You to all who Make the Scholarship Auction a Success By Nancy Wright The New York Holstein Association’s Scholarship Committee’s annual fund-raising auction at the All-Breeds Convention was, once again, a money-making success. The total amount raised came to just shy of $5000. The silent auction had 39 items donated with the highest selling item being a collection of John Deere baby things donated by the Wayne-Ontario Holstein Club. The silent auction room saw steady traffic this year and the Scholarship Committee members manning the room are always pleased to see folks enjoying checking on their bids and using the room as a gathering place to catch up with friends. TransOva donated an aspiration that was auctioned off at the ET Sale on Thursday evening. Thank you to Seth Kimball who was the successful bidder on that item. Friday night at the banquet, Dave Rama masterfully led the bidding on four “live” items. A hotel package donated by the Holiday Inn in Liverpool for the time of Carousel went to Richard and Nancy Wright, a custom-made farm-themed fire pit donated by John & Janice Barrett sold to Bonnie Bargstedt, red and green toddler “tractor” stools given by Midas Touch Genetics went to Jonathan & Alicia Lamb and Gordie Cook, respectively. Seven young people received their monetary awards at the 2017 Junior Convention. They are Cornellians: Courtney Dearnley from Copake, Stephanie Finn of Holland Patent, Kristen Gallagher from Waterville, Jen-

nifer King, Stephanie McBath – both of Waddington, and Kayla Windecker of Frankfort. Josh Chisholm of Carthage, a freshman at Cobleskill, is the 7th NYHA Scholarship recipient. Brett Post from Hobart, who is attending SUNY Morrisville, received the Ziemba Family Scholarship in memory of Steve Ziemba. These young people are tremendous representatives for the future of our dairy industry. Thank you to all who have supported this fund over the years either by donating or bidding at the auction, adding a donation on the annual membership form, a donation in memory of a loved one, or at any time throughout the year. We look forward to you being a part of our auction next year.

Social Media AGvocates Sought for DairyFAN Online conversations and content are leading sources of information for the public about how their food is produced. If you are a dairy farmer or engaged in the dairy industry, DairyFAN is looking for you. The Dairy Food Advocacy Network (DairyFAN) is sponsored by the American Dairy Association North East, the local dairy checkoff organization, and is designed for dairy farmers and young dairy professionals in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Northern Virginia who enjoy participating in online conversations about where our food comes from and how it is produced. The program helps hone

social media AGvocacy skills to better engage in digital discussions about food and agriculture. DairyFAN will help participants by providing guidance on how to beef up social media accounts both personally and professionally, help build opportunities for networking within the agricultural industry, and provide access to exclusive industry initiatives and events. Those interested in applying for DairyFAN are invited to join a webinar on “How to Be a Social Media AGvocate” on March 7 at 12 noon or March 9 at 7 p.m. For more information, contact Emma Andrew at eandrew@milk4u.org.
