2014 President’s Report
M
aryland Holstein exhibitors were well represented in the show ring at local, state, regional and national shows and placed well. Junior members continue to make us proud at the local, state and national levels in the show ring, judging contests, recordbook judging and other contests. Congratulations to all our exhibitors and winners. We are grateful to the past presidents, directors, committee members and members who laid the cornerstone of this organization. Thanks to the current directors, committee members and members who give their time to this organization strong and moving forward. A special thank you to Laurie Savage, secretary-treasurer, for the time she devotes to Maryland Holstein. She is always ready to help in any way possible. Thanks, also, to Donna Reese, who gives support when needed. The Maryland Spring Show continues to grow since moving to Howard County Fairgrounds and due to the hard work of the show committee. Arthur R. Johnson Washington County and the sale committee are to be congratulated for a successful convention, picnic and sale in 2014. The scholarship committee, under new leadership, continues to help junior members reach their educational goals. It is wonderful so many benefitted from scholarships and other areas of help over the years who are now working with junior members in areas such as dairy judging, public speaking and dairy bowl and serving on committees and taking leadership roles. Keep up the good work! The Holstein industry was overcome with sadness due to the terrible fire at Waverley Farm in May that injured Patricia Stiles and Reese Burdette. Reese is the daughter of Justin and Claire Burdette and the granddaughter of Jimmy and Nina Burdette and Mike and Patricia Stiles. It was especially difficult for many of us in Maryland because both families were originally from Maryland, formerly residing in Montgomery County. The outpouring of love, friendship and support was tremendous from all over the country. Please continue to pray for the families. Several Maryland dairy leaders and Maryland Holstein members passed away within the year, including William (Bill) Allen, William (Buddy) Hill, Betty Byers, Robert Firey, Betty Cole, Thomas Smith, Sr., and Oren Bender. Oren was a past board member and Maryland Holstein president. Deepest sympathy to their families and to others we may have missed. It has been my pleasure to serve as your president in 2014, and I look forward to 2015. Please let me know of concerns you may have and/or if you would be interested in serving on a committee. I invite members and their families to attend the state Holstein picnic in July at the farm of Jerry and Barb Watt and family in Carroll County. Wishing everyone a healthy and successful year!

rederick County is this year’s host of the Maryland Holstein Convention and they encourage their fellow Maryland Holstein breeders to SHINE ON in 2015! The background photo is Remcrest Farm, owned by Helen Remsburg where Denny and Lois (Remsburg) Skeen grew up. The cow pictured at top left of the cover is Savage-Leigh Atwd Lic-ET owned by Bulldog Holsteins, the Mike and Heather Iager family. They purchased Lic in the March Madness sale for $5,000 as a summer yearling. She was 1st Jr 3 year old Open & Junior show and the Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Junior Show at Maryland Spring Show. She was also 2nd Jr 3 year old open show at New York Spring Show and was 1st Jr 3 year old at Maryland State Fair 4-H Show. She was also named 1st Jr 3 year old and Reserve Intermediate Champion at the Premier National Junior Show in Harrisburg, PA. She is the 2014 Jr All American Jr 3 year old. Mr. William Allen, Jr., is pictured at top right of the cover. He was born in 1928 and passed away June 2014. He founded Glen-Toctin Farm with his brother John in 1954. He served as state Holstein president, national convention delegate and was honored as state outstanding Sr. Holstein breeder and was inducted into the MD Dairy Shrine.

2014 Outstanding Maryland Holstein Dairyman Award My Lady’s Manor Farm
R
obert and Sam Smith of My Lady’s Manor Farm are the recipients of this year’s Outstanding Maryland Holstein Dairyman Award. Located in northern Harford County, the farm has been home to dairy cows beginning with Robert’s great-grandfather, who was also a blacksmith and had a shop on the farm. The first registered Holstein was purchased by Robert’s uncle, Charles “Chot” Smith of Cool Lawn Farm, and given to Robert’s father, Ross, Jr., to exhibit in 4-H about 70 years ago. Rob and Sam took over the family farm Robert and Sam Smith in 1999 from Robert’s dad and brother. The Smiths now milk over 300 Holsteins in a double-twelve parallel parlor. They farm over a thousand acres, growing the majority of their forages, including corn, soybeans and hay. The fifth generation of Smiths, represented by their son Jarod and his wife Katie, are in charge of the crops and son Justin and his soon-to-be wife Kim help with the young stock, tech support and social media. My Lady’s Manor was one of EmTran’s first embryo clients in the late ‘70s. Since that time the Smiths have continued to take an aggressive approach to increasing the genetics of their herd in a way that keeps them competitive and viable in both the AI world and the show ring. They do extensive IVF and embryo transfer work on a weekly basis. The results of their progressive breeding program are quite impressive. Two of the top 15 GTPI proven bulls carry the Lady’s Manor prefix (Grafeeti and Shamrock). The herd BAA is 107.1, which is the top BAA for herds from 300 to 400 cows in the US for 2014. They have received the Progressive Genetic award for 18 years and the PBR award for 14 years. Their yearly consignments to the MD State Holstein Sale represent their outstanding breeding program. Their 2014 consignment, Lot 1, was a 14th generation of Lady’s Manor breeding, 12 generations of DOM and/or GMD and 11 generations of bull mothers. The Smiths participate in the MD Holstein Spring Show and MD State Fair every year and have garnered numerous Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners as well as many championships. Robert and Sam comment that they feel very blessed to live in a state that has such a diverse and prestigious dairy industry that attracts buyers and breeders from all over the world and that they are able to be a part of that industry. Maryland Holstein is truly fortunate to have such an outstanding herd representing our state on the national and international level.

2014 Scholarship Winners
F
our scholarships were presented to Maryland Holstein youth at the Maryland Holstein Convention banquet held Friday, March 7, at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center. Elizabeth Davis, Carroll County, was named the Outstanding Maryland Holstein Scholar, receiving a $1,000 award. She is a sophomore dairy science major at Virginia Tech. The daughter of Cam and Anne Davis, she is active in the Virginia Tech Dairy Club, Alpha Zeta and the Virginia Tech American Medical Student Association. Elizabeth Davis, Ryan Zimmerman, Shelby Hahn, She was a member of the 2013 winning Virginia Tech and Jessica Sentelle receive their awards from dairy judging team at World Dairy Expo, where she Arthur Johnson. placed second individually. Davis has been active in Maryland junior Holstein activities and has competed at national and local shows, including the All-American Dairy Show and the World Dairy Expo junior show. She attended national Holstein conventions, where she competed in public speaking and was honored as a Young Distinguished Junior Member finalist. This summer, she plans to intern on a large dairy farm in western New York. She is considering a career in medicine or in the dairy industry. Shelby Hahn, Jessica Sentelle and Ryan Zimmerman were awarded $750 scholarships. The daughter of Terry and Teresa Hahn of Frederick County, Hahn is a second-year student at Penn State, Mont Alto campus. She is secretary of the Mount Alto Collegiate FFA. She plans to transfer to the main campus after receiving her associate degree in animal science. While in high school, she was active in FFA and won the Blue-Gold Award for Outstanding FFA Activities with Farming and was FFA ambassador. Her Holstein and 4-H activities include quiz bowl, jamboree, spring show, dairy bowl and dairy judging. Hahn hopes to become a large animal veterinarian and stay in the local area. Sentelle is a junior dairy science and agribusiness management major at Virginia Tech. She works in the Dairy Science Research Lab on campus and interns during the summers. She is active in Dairy Club, Ag Econ Club, Alpha Zeta, dairy judging and tap ensemble. Sentelle has been a junior Holstein member for 12 years and exhibited Holsteins at local and state shows. She was active in 4-H and collegiate dairy judging and now judges professionally. She was a member of the 2010 Maryland 4-H dairy judging team that won in Madison, Wis. The daughter of Darin and Kathy Sentelle of Frederick County, Sentelle is considering attending graduate school to obtain a master’s degree. Since taking dairy management classes, her interest has grown in the economic side of agriculture. She hopes to work with farmers to improve their operations. Zimmerman, a freshman dairy science major at Virginia Tech, is the son of Kathy Zimmerman. While in high school, he was varsity captain of the basketball team, on student council and served as president of the FFA chapter. In FFA, he competed in dairy judging and public speaking. As a member of the Montgomery County 4-H Holstein Club, he held various offices. He has been a member of the Maryland 4-H dairy judging team and exhibited cattle at local and state shows. At Virginia Tech, Zimmerman has been active in Dairy Club, Collegiate 4-H, Alpha Gamma Rho and intramural soccer and is a dining hall employee. During the summer and school breaks, Zimmerman works on the family dairy farm, helping with milking, feeding and field work. He plans to work in the dairy industry in the future, either with the government or directly with farmers. 12

2014 Maryland Holstein Distinguished Service Award Carole Doody
C
arole Doody began her Holstein career at the age of five when she would help milk with her brother and father on their family’s dairy. At 17 she won an essay contest sponsored by the Johnsville 4-H club and was awarded her very first registered Holstein calf. Carole was crowned the Frederick County Farm Queen in 1980 and the Frederick County Dairy Princess in 1983. Her passion for the dairy industry and the Holstein breed grew as she traveled the state promoting agriculture and the dairy cow. In 1981 Cathleen, Carole, Dave and Carissa Doody after her high school graduation, she became a partner in her family farm. Dave and Carole were married in 1985 and in March of 1989 started their own dairy, Tulip-Pond Farm which consists of 158 acres of owned land and 700 rented acres on which they grow corn, soybeans, wheat and hay. They currently milk 150 cows in a double eight parallel parlor and raise all their replacement heifers. The rolling herd average is 23,000 pounds milk and 885 pounds of fat. Carole has been extremely involved with youth in both 4-H and junior Holstein work. She has co-chaired the state Junior Holstein Junior Committee for seven years. She has attended eleven out of the last twelve National Holstein Conventions and served as a delegate for Maryland this past year. Some of the most memorable conventions for Carole were at North Carolina in 2003 when Carissa gave her first speech, Virginia in 2011 where she coached the winning Senior Dairy Bowl, and in 2013 in Indiana where Carissa ended her Holstein career as a DJM finalist. Carole has enjoyed every National convention where she has made many new friendships with juniors and adults from all over the US. Maryland youth have benefited as she has brought back many new ideas to share with our juniors. Carole currently serves on the state board as a director and on Frederick County’s Holstein board where she helps with the junior, scholarship, and banquet committees. Carole and Dave and family graciously hosted the Maryland State Holstein Picnic in 2006. Carole has co-chaired the Farm Queen contest in Frederick for over thirty years, is a member of the Johnsville Homemakers Club, a member of the Union Bridge Church of the Brethern where she is a member of the choir and praise group, and serves on the Nurture committee. She was a leader of the Johnsville 4-H Club for eight years. Carole and husband Dave have two daughters. Carissa, 22, just graduated with her Masters degree in Public Health from Virginia Tech and Cathleen, 20, is a junior at Mount St. Marys College. Cathleen works full time on the farm and Carissa helps on weekends. They have one full time employee. Carole’s enthusiasm and selfless dedication to the youth in Maryland is greatly appreciated by the Maryland Holstein Association.

O
nce again, I would like to thank all the breeders and agribusinesses that generously supported this year’s annual! While we may be small state, the outpouring of support for this publication is tremendous. In the third year of serving as Editor, I finally feel like I may be getting the hang of this but it is only because of the amazing group of people helping collect stories and achievement lists, gathering photographs and ads and endless other tasks that make the Annual come to life. A special acknowledgment must go to Laurie Savage for all of her help in those areas! Finally, the most important part of making the Annual as great as it is truly lies in the amazing talent of Renee Norman-Kenny. Between having an infant daughter, helping her husband run their farm and managing her own business, we are so lucky to have her create the Annual on behalf of our association. A special thank you to Sarah Davis for helping with the advertisement design. Sarah is talented in her field and was a great asset to the Annual again this year. Thank you giving me the privilege of compiling all of our Association’s achievements throughout 2014 and I wish you each the best in 2015!
