Ken’s Comments by Ken Raney

The dairy industry in Pennsylvania as we all know has been decreasing in dairy farms and total milk cows. As Pennsylvania Holstein members, we still have a tremendous opportunity to produce milk and dairy genetics in the state of Pennsylvania, as we are very close (within a 24-hour drive) of 50% of the United State population. We need to continue to have a positive impact on the agricultural industry in Pennsylvania and work to meet our customer’s needs for dairy products. Our membership drive is in full swing, we are happy to continue to offer coupons to our paid members of the Association. Through the generosity of the following businesses we are offering coupons for discounts to our paid members from: Richard Mellinger Semen Sales, Select Sires Inc., NASCO PaulB Hardware, Hoober Inc., PBS Animal Health Please be sure and thank these businesses for their support of our membership program. Our State Conventions, for both adults and juniors will include programs and activities that will be educational opportunities that we hope will offer insight into improving your home operation. The conventions are being planned and hosted by the breeders of the Northeast District. The Adult Convention will be held February 23-24, 2017 at the Hilton Scranton. The juniors will meet February 3-5, 2017 also at the Hilton Scranton. Both conventions will include opportunities to see what’s new in the Holstein industry as well as visit and network with breeders from around the state. There are great tours scheduled for both conventions. We encourage all members to attend the convention and participate in the programs and activities. This is your opportunity to express your ideas and be involved in the business of your Association. Umble “Udderings” - Ken Umble PA Holstein President Hi Holstein Enthusiasts, The Christmas wrapping paper has been ripped off the gifts and burned, kids toys assembled, new clothes put in the closet, Christmas lights taken down, the star taken off the silo and the dinners (that my waistline didn’t need) are over. It really was a blessed time for our family and hopefully for yours as well. I know that for some this season can be hard if you are missing someone and I hope that thru all the busyness and family time that we all know the real reason for this Christmas celebration is that it’s Jesus birthday party and because of that we can all have the assurance of reuniting

with family members and give us hope for the future. Now we are in the middle of college football bowl games and the NFL playoffs. I’m thinking of the similarities between the pre-season projections and rankings of these teams and players, to how I critique and rank young sires when they become available. We look at pedigree, type, production and health traits when we choose sires to put on our “service sire” team. You could say that pedigree is the college program where a NFL player came out of, type might be their size and athleticism, production would be their offensive stats and health traits are similar to playing defense. It takes an entire team using all those categories to contribute to a winning program and it takes a balanced sire to produce winning offspring.

So how have you done in selecting the sires for your team? Were all the projections correct? I always look back and say I should have used this or that bull and there have been a few that I did use that should have never gotten drafted in the first place! Hopefully you got it right most of the time. By the way – my fantasy football team finished 10 and 4, but then lost by one point in the finals. Best wishes to all of you for a Happy New Year. GO PENN STATE! Ken Umble

Come join fellow breeders to keep abreast of your national association. A tour to two of the nation’s best Holstein herds is planned for Friday following the Holstein USA member meeting. Both VanderFeltz Dairy and Scenery-View Holsteins are progressive, profit-minded dairy farms with a love for the Registered Holstein cow.

VanderFeltz Holsteins VanderFeltz Dairy, owned by Joe and Melinda VanderFeltz, is home to 120 Registered Holsteins and 180 Registered Jerseys. Widely known for their excellent management and extreme production prowess, the VanderFeltz family is driven to breed long-lasting, functional cows with beautiful udders. When picking bulls, Joe selects sires, both proven and genomic young sires, based on type with particular emphasis on Udder Composite. Regardless of breed, he also chooses bulls that are plus for fat and protein percent’s and protein pounds. VanderFeltz selects all sires and correctively mates his cows with the help of Semex’s mating program.

Currently he is servicing cows with Doorman, Mogul, Saloon, Meridian, plus a handful of genomic young sires with dams that are scored a minimum of Very Good. By far the most prolific cow family are the Maggie Maes, with many descendants from this cow family on display.

Scenery-View Farm

Scenery-View Holsteins is an up-and-coming farm owned by the Jones family. Casey Jones grew up on his family’s farm with commercial cows, but from a very early age knew he wanted cows like those on the pages of Holstein World. Scenery-View has several goals which they are working towards, including breeding high-genomic females and bulls that can be marketed to Holstein breeders worldwide. Currently they work with AllStar Genetics to market bulls including 54HO0770 Scenery-View MARVEL-ET with +3.72 gPTAT. MARVEL hails from the Lead Mae family with many generations of Very Good and Excellent dams. In addition, Scenery-View is working with Polled, Red and Red Carrier families along with several High gTPI families. The annual convention banquet will be held Friday evening. During this time, the honored Hall of Fame, Pioneer, Distinguished Supporter and Distinguished Young Breeder awards will be presented. Following the presentations, we will enjoy dessert and a time to congratulate the winners and enjoy fellowship with Holstein friends. John Burket

National Holstein Director

I often get asked, “What is Holstein USA doing to address the current dairy situation?” Since the passing of the 2014 farm bill, Holstein USA has not been actively involved in the political arena. However, leading up to the passage of the current farm bill, Holstein championed the Dairy Price Stabilization Act. Unfortunately, this reasonable, and quite popular proposed legislation was in large part dismantled by National Milk Producers Federation. Obviously, this bill interfered with National Milk’s ultimate goal...profit for the processors! So what dairymen were left with was a “safety net,” called the Margin Protection Program (MPP). MPP has already proven to be a colossal failure. In 2015, dairymen received only about one cent on the dollar, back as the program payout. At the board of directors fall meeting in Minneapolis, Holstein USA passed a position statement on MPP that would change the current farm law through a “corrective action,” to provide for monthly regional calculations, rather than the current one size fits all, determination. The current calculation fails to accurately measure regional net farm milk income on a monthly basis. And the regional feed costs calculation ignores actual costs for dairy regions distant from the Midwest/Plains. Holstein feels strongly this approach is much likelier to result in a positive action, then attempting to change or rewrite the current farm bill. Unfortunately, it’s the only option on the table to address our current dairy dilemma. Your Holstein Association is well aware of the current plight of dairymen across our state and nation. In closing, I am reminded of President Gordie Cook’s comments in the most recent Holstein Pulse. “If we as an industry can reduce the amount of milk we ship, the amount we ship will be much more valuable.” Best of wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year!! 12 - January 2017 - PA PROFILES

Douglas Boop Receives Overall Judi Collinsworth Outstanding Junior Exhibitor Award Douglas Boop of Millmont, Pa., is the 2016 recipient of the Holstein Association USA’s Overall Judi Collinsworth Outstanding Junior Exhibitor Award. The Collinsworth Award is presented annually in honor of the Association’s former Executive Director of Member and Industry Services, Judi Collinsworth. The award recognizes youths’ work and involvement with Holstein cattle and dairy activities. Recipients are selected based on sportsmanship, herdsmanship, participation in Holstein and other agricultural activities, as well as an essay describing what they have learned while exhibiting Registered Holstein® cattle. The winners at each of the National Junior Holstein Shows receive a $250 cash prize and the overall winner receives an additional $500 scholarship. Boop, 21, is a Junior at Pennsylvania State University, majoring in animal science, business option. He is very active as a Dairy Science Club member serving on the Nittany Lion Fall Classic Selection Committee as well as the Heifer Crew. After finishing his education at Penn State, Doug is planning to return to his family dairy, Heart & Soul, and continue developing their show program. “It is an honor to receive this award and be recognized by Holstein Association USA for the hard work that has gone into competing in shows and other Holstein activities throughout my Junior Holstein career,” Boop said. Boop has participated widely in his state and county Holstein organizations. He has had success in and out of the showring, receiving a total of 16 Junior All-American nominations, two of which were honored as Reserve Junior All-American. At the 2016 World Dairy Expo, he was recently awarded the Merle Howard Award. “Showing Registered Holsteins has shaped me into the person that I am today,” Boop explained. “The opportuni-

ties and challenges that have been presented to me both in the showring and in preparing to get there have taught me sportsmanship, patience, and the type of example that should be set for youth to follow, while allowing me to make many connections that will be invaluable as I continue in the industry.” As a member of the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association, he was a 2012 Young Distinguished Junior Member finalist and has participated in Dairy Bowl on local, state and national levels, as well as Dairy Jeopardy and Dairy Judging. One Judi Collinsworth Award recipient is selected at each of the four National Junior Holstein Shows. Boop won the award at Premier National Junior Holstein Show. Other winners from 2016 National Junior Holstein Shows are Alyson Philips, Texas, Southern Spring National Junior Holstein Show; and Carley Krull, Wisconsin, Grand National Junior Holstein Show.

2019 Keystone Holstein Three-Year-Old Futurity The 2018 Keystone Holstein Three Year Old Futurity entries are now being accepted. The Keystone Holstein Futurity is a project of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association to stimulate interest in breeding and developing outstanding Registered Holsteins for production and type regardless of individual herd size. Three nominations are required for each animal that competes. The first payment for the 2016 Futurity is due March 24, 2016. Any breeder may nominate as many heifer calves as they wish.

Rules and Conditions Eligibility: Any Registered Holstein female of 87% parentage or higher, bred by a Pennsylvania Holstein member, and carrying a Pennsylvania Holstein members prefix, and born between September 1, 2015 and August 31, 2016 is eligible for the Keystone Holstein Futurity.

Fees: First payment of $3.00/head with nomination paid by March 31, 2017, second payment of $11.00/head paid by September 15, 2017 and the third payment of $20.00/head paid by September 15, 2018.

Purse: All Futurity monies shall be used only for Futurity purposes. The purse in this event will be divided with 50% being awarded to the first-place animal. The remainder will be divided among those competitors who show in the 2019 Futurity Class.

Refunds: All nomination fees are committed to the purse. No refunds will be made whether an animal competes or eligibility is discontinued.

Maintaining Eligibility: Eligibility after an animal has been nominated is maintained by making subsequent payment by due dates as specified. Any animal sold after being nominated will remain eligible, as long as the animal meets all other Pennsylvania Holstein Show eligibility requirements.
