NEITHER HERE NOR THERE 16 IRISH BORDERS The Irish border, runs for 499 km separating the Republic of Ireland from Northern Ireland. In the light of BREXIT redefining once again the implication of that line, the projects seeks to mirror, interpret and spatialize 16 moments on the Irish border. This demystification of the borderland, grounds the Irish border 16 different times showcasing its complexity, far beyond the simplicity in which it is adressed in politics. This is a compendium of different Irish borders: infrastructural, public, domestic, hard, soft, optimistic, pessimistic, past, present and future. LOCATION TYPE INSTITUTION DATE CONTRIBUTION

THE PEACE LINE, 1998 The peace lines in Belfat and Derry/LondonDerry, are 7m high walls that seperate protestants and catholic neighborhoods. This artefact was a supposedly temporary measure that was introduced by the government during the period of “the Troubbles”. Decades later this walls still seperate the “good” side from the “bad” side.
6
THE IMMIGRATION WALL, 2040 The national plan 2040 of the Republic of Ireland plans on welcoming one million immigrant to the country by 2040. With BREXIT being sold with an anti-immigration idea, and with the growing anti-immigration sentiments on a global scale, this projection spatializes the evaluation and integration process immigrants will have to go throught to adapt to an Irish life.
7
8
THE IMMIGRATION WALL, 2040 Located on the border between two mountains tops, the immigation wall is a one way trajectory inside a spacialized device. From medical testing, to language learning , the trajectory in those alienating spaces embodies a critisism towards government’s approach to integration , and new comers attitude alike . The last phase (shown in the previous image) takes place in a church-like setting where the immigrant quietly awaits for the verdict.

10
THE BORDER MACHINE, 2052 327 roads cross the Irish border. On each road there is a box. A machine that detects, scans, analyses and reports every movement on the borderland. The network formed by these machines create a virtual field, a virtual wall one might say, that dissects the idea of a soft border to its bare minimum, avoiding the disturbance of the everyday..

THE OYSTER FARM OF LOUGH FOYLE, 2045 Lough Foyle is a debated territory between the republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The legislation gap allowed for an illegal buiseness of oyster farms to flourish on the lough. This projection is an exagerated utopia of an independant island inhabited by those outlaws, the oyster farmers.
14
SPACE BORDER, 2100 This projection in space takes the idea of international borders to a future scenario, where borders are monitored from space through satellite imagery. The illustion of a soft border on the ground is supported by the powerful satellites that give a new definition to “Fortress Europe.

THE PART-TIME RIVER The slum of Garotte in Tigre and its adjacent social housing is bordered by a an under-construction gated community, Venice. Due to the flood-prone site in which it is being developed, the ground level of Venice will be raised of 2m, a measure that would act as a dike, and further endanger the slum of Garotte. The project is an attempt to propose a new ground that primarily uses the established level dierence as a basis for the implementation a comprehensive water system that acts as a flood prevention mechanism by diusing rainwater and maximizing the capacity of water retention during period of oods from the Lujan River. Water is re-inserted to the site, through the strategic introduction of floodable areas. As an additional layer, the project introduces new spaces and interfaces that present an added value to the residents daily lives. The aim is to acknowledge the existing dierences, and propose an alternative to the walled realities of a fragmented Tigre. LOCATION TYPE INSTITUTION DATE CONTRIBUTION

PRCANJ GARDEN The idea here was to create an architecture that would be a new piece of landscape, emphasizing the uniqueness of the place and defining the already existing hotel building as the main protagonist of the story. The terraced garden, with its clearly defined geometry, allows the villas to naturally incorporate into the sloping topography. The intentionally simple forms added allows visitors to be fully immersed in the picturesque. LOCATION TYPE INSTITUTION DATE CONTRIBUTION

THE INCUBATOR The “Nahr el Kalb” or “Dog River” Valley, an area of enormous historical value, marks a rupture in the post war urban expansion of the capital Beirut. Surrounded by densily populated areas, the valley is isolated. The deterioration of the location, the pollution of its river and the emerging industries are some of the factors threatening the local biodiversity and the collective memory of the place . The projects intervenes in multiple spots, relinking the valley to the sea , providing access. The main architecture element is a catalyst, a fauna and flora incubator, that reintroduce endegered species to the site. LOCATION TYPE INSTITUTION DATE CONTRIBUTION

BEKAA VALLEY SCHOOL The Bekaa valley has the driest climate in Lebanon, and one of the warmest. Therefor, the design startegy here seeks to promote optimal natural ventilation and effective sunlight protection . The school is composed of three cores: kindergarden, primary school and administrative core. The idea was to make each unit function independently while sharing comon areas. In addition to that, the design of the school was made with a modular construction system in mind. LOCATION TYPE INSTITUTION DATE CONTRIBUTION

A BUILDING AND A CHURCH This piece of land is a church property. In order for it to be developped as a mixed used building the investor was asked to build a church. The design is kept simple for maximum affordability, utilizing available local materials to achieve a unique spatial quality. The disposition of the briques on the facade of both the residential building and the church filters the heat while allowing the sunlight in. LOCATION TYPE INSTITUTION DATE CONTRIBUTION

UNION OF TYR MUNICIPALITY The competition was held by UN-habitat in collaboration with the Lebanese University to design the new building for the union of Tyr municipality. While Tyr’s troubbled history is more often than not disregarded and undiscussed, this design does the complete opposite. Inspired by the war remains in the area , the choice of material and the deconstruction of the volumes stands for a past that should not be forgotten, but rather celebrated. TANGRAM MUSEUM The tangram game was invented in China during the Song Dynasty. The dissected square folds and twists to create endless geometric forms. The game was mimicked here to create the inner shapes in the museum that is enveloped in a cube. The translucent material used allows for the inner folds to show through the facade, altering its visibility according to the sunlight. LOCATION TYPE INSTITUTION DATE CONTRIBUTION
