Cultural Node Alexandria’s main cultural zone
CULTURAL NODE Is a center of activity, it is a type of land mark but is distinguished from a landmark by virtue of its active function, where a landmark is a district visual object, a node is a district hub activity. KEVIN LYNCH “The image of the city”
Aim of the project The aim is to preserve the history of the place and create a new cultural node by changing the use of the surrounding buildings and adding a new extension to the main theatre.
Site Location
Architectural Concept
This site was specifically chosen because of its typology, historical background and location in the heart of the city.
The main idea is to recall the old physical memory of this place, establishing a cultural district centered on the site and preserve the archictural style of buildings surrounding this site.
Listed Not Listed
-Sayed Darwish’s Theatre was built in 1918 and started in 1921 by the french architect ‘George Park’ like Vienna‘s Opera style. It was called as “Mohamed Ali Theater” and then “Sayed Darwish Theater” as it is known nowadays.
Philosophy Of Design Considering the Opera as the Master piece of the site which plays the role of the Goal for the Youth or the beginners with the dream of performing in the Opera one day, so the Concept of the project is to take the journey of Success which passes through three stages: Training .. Performing in experimental theatres and then The Dream “The Opera Show”.

FORM DEVELOPMENT From the site analysis, it is decided to extend the plaza infront of the Opera building to be like an interaction zone in the project or a waiting area for the visitors and also it could be used as an outdoor cultural activity plaza that connects people.
Buildings with bad conditions that could be removed.
Listed buildings with good conditions that could be reused.
1- Subtraction of a cube from the new extension building to create a larger plaza. 2- Subtraction also of a cube at the top of the new building to create an outdoor roof plaza to complete the idea of the interaction zones in the project. Also there is an under ground commercial zone, for creating an interaction zone inorder to attract people to the site and encourage the main idea of the project.
Study for the pedestrian paths and the plaza connecting between them: The Plaza Created assures the Pedestrian paths located in the site and also connects between them.

OVERVIEW The International Architectural Design Workshop at Portsaid was a cooporatopn in Urban Design and Architecture in Historic City Districts between Cairo University, Alexandria University And BTU CottbusSenftenberg. The workshop focused on understanding and reflecting on the endangered heritage of the typical, outsanding 19th century architecture of Portaid, trying to outline concepts for its rehabilitation and re-use. The workshops is a part of joint research activities that aim at proposing the protection of the architectural and urban heritage of the Suez canal region as UNESCO World Heritage. The historical cores of Portsaid are the European quarters (Al Franj), the Mediterranean (Al Charq) and the former village (Al Arab). The workshop program was to focus on a house of “Second Skin of wood along the facades from each of the historical cores, so each group was worked on one house trying to establish its origin and local adaptation and started to develope future strategies for re-evaluation, maintenance and adaptive re-use.

The long-term strategy of our project contains 3 components The urban strategy reaches from cleaning, improving of the sidewalks, reduction of the traffic in the secondary pedestrian roads to the final prospects of opening up parts of the barrier building towards Suez canal, mainly for visual and climatic purposes. The building strategy concentrates on keeping existing offices and public functions in the ground level, including social and cultural spaces in the upper levels as a vivid mixture. The residential areas in the second floor are protected, but partly changed. Student dorms at the first and third floor and a restaurant and apartments at the roof create a variety of special offers. Thus, we suggest several possible typologies that could gradually could be included. The current circulation will be supported via extra elevators in both wings of the building. An additional circulation with staircase will be implemented at the back of the plot – being called the “vertical garden. Three courtyards will support this vertical garden idea. The detail strategy focuses on flexible shelters from wood and additional windows towards the courtyards. Together with the opening of the Suez canal barrier and the planned typologies, we will support the natural cross ventilation of the building.
