Registered and Commercial Angus Cattle Dear Fellow Cattlemen, Welcome to our 13th Annual “Carcass without Compromise Bull Sale. We appreciate your interest in our program and look forward to providing you the top end genetics from our herd. We have worked very hard through A.I. and Embryo Transfer to develop the genetics that we have today. Every bull in the sale has been measured for performance, ultra-sounded, and tested for the GGPLD profile to increase accuracy. Our embryo transfer program has allowed us to rapidly advance the genetics in the Larson Angus Ranch herd. We strive to multiply only our best animals for all traits. We only flush cows that have proven themselves to be superior from a production standpoint, yet have the sound structure and phenotype we all desire. All of the cows still work for a living in a commercial atmosphere, including donors. We select our donor females every year in the spring, insuring they are fertile, productive cows that fit our environment and calve early in the season. You will find several different sire groups in the sale as usual. Our goal is to make every mating the best we possibly can for all traits of performance and phenotype. We typically select bulls that are similar in stature to maintain uniformity, yet allow ourselves a higher selection of mating opportunities to produce cattle with fewer weaknesses. This year we will be retaining 1/3 semen interest in all bulls. We reserve no possession rights. This means if we decide we would like to come back and A.I. to a bull that you purchased in the sale we can do so, at our expense and your convenience. On behalf of Larson Angus Ranch, we thank you for your interest in our program and hope to see you at the sale!

Our Breeding Philosophy Our breeding philosophy is one of balance, like many programs. It seems like a simple philosophy, yet truly maintaining balance that is above average is an art. Balance in our mind translates to above average EPD’s, superior phenotype, and excellent maternal characteristics. Though we attempt to maintain balance, every trait is still on a priority list. When we have a cow in the chute, every mating decision is designed to make a better female. We understand that every animal needs the foundation of good feet, sound skeletal structure, fertility, and good udder quality before advancing on to other traits of economic importance. These are our highest priority traits in every mating decision. Calving ease and growth are both very important traits that make up the majority profit for most cattlemen, so we always have these traits on the upper 1/3 of our priority list. However, we believe that both calving ease and performance should not be selected for extreme cases. We prefer newborn calves to be born closer to their due date so they don’t miss out on any key immunity advantages in the womb. Yet, we need calves to be born unassisted for your management and ours. Birth weight is an indicator of calving ease, so we prioritize calving ease over birth weight. Performance is great, ultimately it pays the bills. Though it pays the bills, we don’t need to be in the top 1% for performance, or any trait for that matter. All animals need sound foot and skeletal structure to carry their own body weight. If we lose correct structure, we lose longevity. Carcass traits are always high on our priority list. We believe in producing great tasting, healthy, nutritious beef to better feed the world. We understand that not all producers retain ownership in their calf crop. Yet, we can’t afford to be the only industry in the world that doesn’t prioritize what our consumer prefers. Increased beef demand comes from great tasting, healthy, nutritious beef. We all benefit from increased beef demand. Most cattlemen that do retain ownership in their cattle will tell you that yield is king and grade is gravy. We select for well above average marbling, yet we need the ribeye size and optimal fat to help to keep yield acceptable, while maintaining fleshing ability in our cowherd. Yield is often manageable, yet we need our genetic selection pressure to insure yield is acceptable and not an issue. Expected Progeny Differences are an excellent tool to push your herd in a progressive direction. They are much more than just “numbers” when they have some accuracy reported from good ethical data. All bulls in the sale have been weighed and measured for birth, weaning, yearling, ultrasound, and tested with the GGPLD to increase that accuracy. On the same note, we feel like phenotype is just as high of a priority. However, if a cow doesn’t have the phenotype for longevity, she is far less likely to profit as much over her lifetime regardless of the performance or carcass traits she possesses. When prioritizing EPD’s and trying to balance them out, we do think it is important to look at the heritability of each trait. True balance is a very difficult challenge to accomplish and it is our continued effort to provide you with superior balanced seed-stock.

American Angus Association® Selection Tools

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. Accuracy (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis. GROWTH Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in firstcalf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), feed efficiency expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Height EPD (YH), is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to the that of other sires.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. CARCASS The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, Ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis. Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. $VALUE INDEXES $Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves.

Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.

MATERNAL Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first–calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction, and the EPD is reported in percentage units.

Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Mature Weight EPD (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires. Mature Height EPD (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires.

Quality Grade ($QG) represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD, which is influenced by carcass marbling scores and ultrasound percent intramuscular fat (% IMF) measurements, contribute to $QG. Yield Grade ($YG) $YG represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield. $G combines both $QG and $YG, and may be the best carcass decision tool for focusing on quality and red meat yield simultaneously. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. 02/12

American Angus Association $Value Indexes

$Values are multi-trait selection indexes expressed in dollars per head, to assist commercial beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. A $Value has meaning only when used in comparison to the $Value of another animal. For example, just as with EPDs, variation in $Values between animals indicates average expected differences in the relative value of progeny if random mating is assumed and the calves are exposed to the same environment.

Feedlot Value ($F): an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning performance compared to progeny of other sires.

Grid Value ($G): an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Yield Grade ($YG) represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield.

Q

Beef Value ($B): an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. The $B value combines the contributions of $F and $G.

$Values have meaning when used in comparing the relative merit or ranking of two individuals. For example, Bull X has a $B value of +26.00, and Bull Y has a $B value of +16.00. If these bulls were randomly mated to a comparable set of females and the calves were exposed to the same environment, on the average you would expect Bull X’s progeny to have a +10.00 dollar per head advantage in postweaning performance and carcass merit over Bull Y’s progeny (26.00 - 16.00 = +10.00 per head)

How to Use $Values $Values should be used to complement the criteria that producers already use when selecting bulls. Different management situations may require varying emphasis on the genetic selection “tools” offered. For instance, one producer might have historically sold calves at weaning, and rarely used the carcass EPDs in bull selection decisions. First he needs to meet his birth weight EPD/calving ease EPD requirements, depending on whether heifers are to be bred. Then selections can be made on Weaned Calf Value ($W) which characterizes revenue and costs associated with the preweaning phase. He would use $W to capture preweaning dollar differences when comparing two sires of interest. In addition, he may want to begin making general progress in improving end-product value to create more predictability in his calves, or he may choose to retain ownership in the future. In this case, the $B could be used in concert with the selection criteria he has used in the past, such as $W, to make directional change in postweaning and carcass merit.

The $Values are not designed to be driven by a single trait, as an index is multi-trait by design. These selection tools are the result of the application of industry-relevant market values to Angus genetics for preweaning, feedlot, and carcass merit. Keep in mind that selection for an individual trait may be an effective option for some producers. In this case, he might sell fed cattle and have significant carcass data on past groups of steers. This detailed data would allow him to identify the specific trait in need of improvement. In this case, $B might not be used where the individual end-product EPDs could better assist him in achieving the desired genetic change. The producer still has the opportunity to use $B as a tool in maintaining the balance between feedlot and carcass traits. The $W, $F, $G and $B values on individual animals and the Sire Evaluation Report may be viewed at www.angus.org.

American Angus Association ® Carcass EPDs The American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) includes integrated carcass expected progeny differences (EPDs). These genetic predictions for carcass merit encompass both carcass and ultrasound databases, which previously generated separate EPDs for each datasource. The carcass EPDs from the combined analysis includes single EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis.

Marbling EPDs

Department of Agriculture (USDA) beef quality grading system. Traditionally, it has been subjectively assessed by the USDA grader when the USDA Quality Grade is being assigned. As a review, the degree of marbling and numerical score are presented in Table 1. The degrees of marbling help describe quality grade. Selection pressure to improve the average marbling score would be expected to improve quality grade. Thus, marbling EPDs can be used to make genetic progress in cattle for a more desirable quality product.

A marbling EPD is a prediction of differences in future progeny performance relative to carcass marbling score. In most cases, comparisons are between future offspring performance of sires in order to make directional change in carcass marbling. Marbling EPDs allow a relative ranking of sire genetics to be assessed, and then sires to be chosen that best fit the producer’s marketing objectives and breeding program. The important application of these tools is to compare differences between sires to determine their effect on future progeny, rather than focus on the absolute numerical value of the EPD. The unit of measure for the marbling EPD is marbling score. Marbling score is the primary component of the U.S.

Table 1: USDA Quality grading system & marbling score

Carcass EPD example

trait example illustrates the ability to select for carcass merit through the available genetic tools. It is important to note that the seedstock breeder and commercial bull buyer must consider a variety of economically important traits for their particular operation. Even in this example, no consideration was given for the difference in ribeye genetics, favoring Sire B over Sire A. On average, the carcasses out of Sire B would be expected to have nearly a one-third-square-inch (sq. in.) ribeye area advantage compared to the carcasses of Sire A progeny.

Carcass EPD layout

The general layout of Carcass EPDs is depicted below. When available, the carcass group/progeny counts and ultrasound group/progeny counts are also included.

On average, we would expect the carcasses from Sire A’s calves to have 0.33 higher marbling score than the carcasses from Sire B’s progeny. What could this potentially mean on the rail at grading time? Assume sires were randomly mated and progeny were managed and harvested in the same environment. If we collected the data from both sire groups and Sire B’s average marbling score was 5.8 (or Small80; low-Choice; see Table 1), we would expect that The carcass genetic evaluation is designed to simplify Sire A’s progeny carcasses would have an average marbling score of about 6.1 (or Modest10). This improvement in marbling selection tools for commercial bull buyers using Angus genetics. score would qualify these carcasses for acceptance into the The evaluation is enhanced to include carcass performance data Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) brand provided other CAB and to simultaneously incorporate ultrasound performance data on bulls, heifers and steers. Ultrasound traits are analyzed as specifications are met. The expected result of using the EPDs is that the average indicator traits for carcass merit. The outcome of this analysis marbling score of future progeny carcasses will improve by is a single set of EPDs, simple to interpret in carcass units, selecting the higher-marbling-EPD sire. This simplified, single- relevant to commercial producers and the industry. Driving the science of better breeding

There’s little room for error in the cattle business. Producers need the most advanced information to make smart selection decisions, and Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) provides it through genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs). GE-EPDs have become the industry standard for herd improvement, building on decades of science-backed genetic evaluation tools originated and maintained through the American Angus Association®, home to the largest and evergrowing single-breed beef cattle database. EPDs that traditionally contained all pedigree, performance and progeny information now also include results from available genomic, or DNA, tests. Breeders who use genomic technology give buyers access to AGI-generated GE-EPDs that provide: Increased predictability and decreased risk for young and unproven animals due to enhanced accuracy of EPDs Better characterization of genetics for difficult-to-measure performance traits (such as carcass traits, maternal traits and feed efficiency) The ability to make more rapid progress for traits that are important to you, due to: · more accurate selection · easier identification of genetic outliers · the ability to propagate young animals with confidence earlier in their lives In fact, GE-EPDs on unproven animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they had recorded 7-24 calves, depending on the trait. That’s valuable insight, offered regularly through the breed’s weekly national cattle evaluation. Trait

Economic Importance of Bulls Bulls have the greatest ECONOMIC IMPACT on any breeding program, thus BULL SELECTION is one of the most IMPORTANT decisions and investments that a cowman makes during the course of a year. A bull sires 20 to 40 calves each year while a cow produces half or less this many offspring in her lifetime. For the most part, herd improvement comes from bulls. It’s been estimated that 80% of HERD IMPROVEMENT is directly attributed to bull selection. The chart below depicts the possible differences in value of four bulls siring 125 calves per lifetime. What’s A Bull Worth? The graph indicates the possible differences in values of 4 bulls siring 125 calves in a lifetime. Bull B sires average calves, Bull A sires calves 15 pounds lighter at weaning, Bull C sires calves 15 pounds heavier at weaning, and Bull D sires calves 30 pounds heavier at weaning. Bull D would be worth $3,000 more than the average bull based on an 80 cent per pounds selling price of the calves. This graph only indicates the value considering weaning weights. The increase or decrease in value due to calving-ease, the production of daughters, feedlot gain and efficiency, yearling growth, carcass traits, etc., could easily double or triple these differences.

Before you decide on yearling bulls... You are buying the very best Yearling bulls haven’t been picked over and the yearling bulls offered are the very best from their calf crop at both weaning and yearling time. If they are not the best, they would not be offered to you now. Younger bulls are easier on heifers And, they’re easier on cows, and each other too. Handled and used properly, yearling bulls will work longer for you… You can expect at least an additional year of breeding service from a yearling bull. Yearling bulls may not be for everyone But, if you can adjust your program to yearling Angus bulls, we can offer you better quality bulls, with better genetics to sire more pounds for less money and improve your potential. Think about it in terms of dollars and cents.
