On behalf of the Hadway Family, and the whole Westway Crew, we welcome you to the 20th Edition of the Westway Farms Bull Sale. With it being the 20th we have looked over the past years of catalogues and photos and it has been so fun remembering!! We have had so many good laughs remembering cattle shows, sales, YCS trips and all the people who touched our lives in this business. The cattle part is exciting, but in all honesty, it has been the people who have hands down been the best part about being on this journey!

We sold our first pen of bulls in 1997 with Merle and Peggy Good and Danny and Loretta Blain at the Olds Cow Palace. The other day, we met as a family with Annessa Good, Merle and Peggy’s daughter, to discuss farm transitioning and it really felt wonderful to look around the table at our grown children and see how full circle our dream has come. We were amazed at how emotional it was to start the discussion of transition. It’s not the stuff that makes us emotional, it’s the emotions and memories that we carry with the stuff that stirs our hearts and seriously these are worth so much more! Tom always says that a lifetime is not long enough to build a cow herd. It is somewhat reassuring to know that the herd will continue and it’s so exciting to have our children help make those decisions. The future of WFL cattle is in good hands and we are so proud that Dayna and Caith, Will, Andie and Bill, and Jo continue to contribute to the future of Westway Farms.

There is an exciting group of bulls on offer for the 20th Annual Bull Sale. Our program relies on raising cattle that we can make a profit with, and our fellow customers can too. We believe that we have established a high-quality cow herd. In order to maintain this herd, we believe in culling hard on both females and the sale bulls to keep the quality as high as possible. Our goal is to do everything we can to make the cattle built right and our breeding decisions are based on what will work for the cattle producer. We want our commercial cattle people to be more profitable, and we want to help them achieve this by using a WFL bull that will add performance and value to their own herd.

There is a large quantity of solid coloured red and black bulls on offer, as well as red and black baldy bulls. The depth in the red pen this year has us very excited and there are many elite individuals in each sire group. The black pen features many Westcross bulls that are uniform by design and there is also a heavy offering of a new and exciting sire group….Prime Time sons.

We are thrilled to work with Olds Auction Mart (OAM) again and their timed online sale platform works well for us and our customers. 2022 saw Josie graduate from Northland College in Wisconsin and Caith enter the Veterinary Medicine Program at the University of Calgary. Congratulations and we are so very proud of you both! The littles are so fun…Carter is in grade 2 and a dancer, Cal is a “Mini Will” and Conlen loves all animals.

The last 20 years have been a blast and we feel so blessed and we are so grateful to have our families, staff, customers and friends who have been there with us on this ride called Life! WFL BULL GUARANTEE Westway Farms stands behind their bulls and will ensure that customers are handled in a professional manner if an incident may occur. Please contact one of the Westway representatives immediately if there is any issue with your bull purchase as we can provide you with a bull to breed your cows. All animals will carry a standard breeding guarantee as specified by the Canadian Simmental Association. At no time shall the seller’s liability exceed the purchase price of the animals.

Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as the bull is sold. A complimentary 10day insurance policy will be applied to every bull in the sale following sale day. Bulls staying at the farm past the 10-day insurance period must be insured.

Westway Farms offers free delivery to central points in Western Canada. Any bulls picked up within 10 days of the sale will be given a $100 credit to your bull purchase(s). Bulls may be kept at the farm free of charge until May 1st. After May 1st, you will be charged $150 per month.

We all agree that the highlight of our bull sale is not just showcasing our bulls but more importantly it is having the opportunity to reconnect and catch-up with customers, neighbours and friends. Last year, we really enjoyed the Open House and the time it gave us to connect with people so we will again host an Open House on the farm, the day before the online sale close-out. The Westway Crew will be available to tour you through the bulls and answer any questions you may have about the sale offering. We will be set up to offer some Westway Hospitality and hope you are able to join us on March 1st.

There will also be a number of Customer draws for visitors that view the bulls prior to the Sale. All names will be entered into the draw for two $1000 2023 Bull Sale Credits and the draw will take place the morning of March 2nd.

BULL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The bulls performed throughout the summer months on grass as there was high quality vegetation to be grazed along with their mothers milk. The bulls only had creep feed for the last three weeks prior to weaning as the pastures started to brown off in August, also familiarizing them with eating dry matter and the ability to eat on their own before weaning. The bulls were weaned at the end of August prior to the crew starting harvest. Weaning took place on August 25th where the bulls were weaned in pens and put on a high forage mixed ration until the bawling was done. Once the bulls were through the weaning process they were put back into a 20 acre paddock where they were able to graze regrowth cereal silage and were supplemented with a high protein, forage based TMR ration. As winter and snow came a little quicker this year, the bulls were processed and sorted into their winter pens on November 17th. The bulls have then been maintained on the high protein diet to enhance lean muscle development and maximize frame growth. The bulls continue to consume a total mixed ration, made up of a mixture of hay and straw for dry feed, along with a few pounds of barley grain for energy, and the balance of ration being corn silage. The diet also contains a high quality low inclusion protein supplement from Bullseye Feeds that includes a vitamin and chelated mineral package to help boost the bulls overall health and immunity. The bulls feeding program is not intended to be an industry competition, it is a true test on our bulls ability to convert pounds of feed to pounds of weight gain. The bull’s overall diet is formulated to achieve a 3.0lbs ADG, allowing the bulls to show their true genetic potential. Lower converting bulls get weaned out prior to creating the catalog if their not achieving 3lbs ADG when we take yearling weights in early January. The bulls never have their feet trimmed prior to the sale and are semen tested by Didsbury Vet Clinic.

(footrot vaccine) as well, prior to leaving the farm after sale day. For parasite control, all calves receive a topical Ivermectin in the early fall and a topical Permethrin in the winter for lice control.

Welcome to the 2023 Westway Farms Bull Sale! All of the cattle at Westway Farms are on a complete herd health program and everyone at Didsbury Vet Services is proud to be able to partner with them as they work hard to bring you this outstanding group of bulls.

This herd health program for these bulls begins prior to even being born. All of the cows at Westway Farms receive a killed IBR/BVD vaccine, 8 way vaccine and Scour Bos 9 at preg check time in the fall as well as a topical Ivermectin for parasite control. This serves to maintain the overall health of all cattle present on the farm but also gets a headstart on the immunity of these bulls before they even hit the ground.

At birth, all calves receive Bovilis Nasalge. This is followed by 2 doses of Bovi Shield Gold One Shot and Ultrabac 7 Somnubac (IBR/BRSV/BVD/PI3 and 7 way Clostridial plus Histophilus Somnus). These are administered between pasture turnout in the spring and weaning in the fall. All sale bulls will have received 2 doses of Fusogard

We will have completed a physical exam and semen evaluation of all bulls offered prior to sale day. Each bull will be assessed to determine soundness, excellent body condition score, and to be free of external visible defects. The semen evaluation includes physical palpation of the internal sex glands, testicles and epididymis and a visual exam of the penis during sample collection. A scrotal measurement is taken to ensure they are above minimum requirements for scrotal size. The semen is evaluated for motility and morphology and all bulls present at sale day will have received a passing grade above 70% or a decision deferred which means they will be reassessed and confirmed to pass prior to leaving the farm.
