We sincerely thank you for your interest and support of our breeding programme here at Royalla. The past year has seen plenty of highs and lows with the disappointing cattle prices having a big impact on us all. However, as we write this there are some terrific indicators for a much better year ahead with prices having turned. Today's Grassfed Accredited price means we expect a draft of pure Shorthorn steers to be sold before sale day to make $2500-$2900.
We believe our sale bulls should be held to the same standard as the steers. A range of sires will be represented with one of the highlights being 6 sons of Byland Flash.
The Bulls are Blooded, vaccinated for 7in1, pesti and Vibrio. They are semen tested, including morphology, by Dr Ced Wise. He also measured testicles using the Reliabull Scrotal Measurer with tension. Scans were done by Roger Evans and the results are printed inthis catalogue.
We are pleased to have Jim White join the team at Royalla. With Jim's love of Shorthorns we know he will be a great asset.
Open Day is Friday 16th August. Inspection any other time by appointment is welcomed. The sale will be online with StockLive and we suggest you verify registration prior. Videos will be available approximately two weeks before the sale. We welcome calls about any lots suitability for your programme.
Regards,
Neilson & Sue Job 0428 677374, Nic Job 0428 298767, Jim White 0438 388275
As primary producers we have to make the best out of the commodities that we produce. Currently the best money for beef is for Grass Fed Accredited cattle. A product for which Shorthorns are supremely suited. Our production is based on grass. Easy keeping cattle that thrive on grass without supplements. Low inputs with a highly efficient output of beef. All of the bulls in our sale, apart from Lots 1, 2, and 3, have been grown out under this system, with NO GRAIN.
WEEBOLLABOLLA THEODORE - An absolute breed legend. The measure of outstanding sires is their ability to breed on. Theodore excels in this. As good as his sons have been, his greatest asset is in his daughters and grand daughters. His profound influence can be seen phenotypically for many generations.
BYLAND FORCE - We purchased Force outright at the age of 11 months. He had an actual scan of 6.8% at that age, with a ratio of 178% compared to his contemporaries. Phenomenal stats and figures. The raw data of his progeny endorses this. We are using him as an AI sire over our heifers.
ROYALLA WESTQUARTER Q199 - A white Trigger son that we only got one year from. A growthy bull that was right at the top of his drop for IMF. Some very commercially orientated sons in this sale.
ROYALLA ROCKSTAR K274 - Another sire who displays his greatness by his ability to breed on. He has Grandsons topping numerous sales, such as R.Ventura's Best and Polldale ZZ Tarmac. He has bred a Champion of the World female. Progeny topping sales in multiple countries.
ROYALLA WINCHESTER Q142Winchester was sold to Warraberry for $30000 in 2021, for whom he has bred extremely well. Semen available from Warraberry and Royalla. Out of the same cow as Tipperary and Blackadder, sired by Trigger. A bull truly bred in the IMF purple.
ROYALLA VENTURA P158 - Supreme Interbreed Champion at Beef 2021. Sire of equal top all breeds at Beef 2024, Ventura's Best, for $55000. One of Rockstar's very best.
FUTURITY PROPHECY
- A short haired, solid red bull. We had him here for a couple of seasons before he returned to Futurity and Eloora.
SPRYS GOLDEN ROD P39 - Golden Rod has bred very well for us. A slick red with plenty of shape. Used as an AI sire with good gestation. Daughters now with calves at foot.
BYLAND FLASH - Sire of the World Record
Priced Shorthorn bull. He has sired several sons to sell for more than $100,000 AUD. A bull that breeds shape and IMF in his progeny. Sire of Sydney RAS 2024 Grand Champion Bull.
MARELLAN STAR - A slick haired bull, purchased in 2018. A bull that really stamped his progeny. Daughters are breeding well.

Our condolences to the Munro family, Judy and extended family, on the passing of Sandy.
Weebollabolla bloodlines have been a major part of our breeding programme since before the establishment of firstly, the Marellan stud and then later Royalla. In Sandy's era we have purchased 10 stud sires and numerous have gone the other way, to Weebollabolla.
Sandy was always a man with an eye for quality both in his breeding and purchasing. Most of all we remember him for his wonderful friendship.

INTERNATIONAL SUMMIT: SOCIETAL ROLE OF MEAT AND LIVESTOCK
DUBLIN CONFERENCE A BRIEF
OVERVIEW OF PRESENTATION AT ROYALLA OPEN DAY 2023
THE ROLE OF MEAT IN A SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT
Dr
Rod Polkinghorne OAM
THE ROLE OF MEAT IN DIET & HEALTH
Dr Rod Polkinghorne OAM
At Dublin the scene was set by Prof. Nei Mann (Presentat on/Ta k), an expert on nutrit on and anthropology tracing the development of humans from our primate distant re atives. Scientific evidence estab ishes the dietary links associated with evolution from pr mate ancestors to humans over 4 million years. The consumption of meat led to arge changes in gut proportions so that the human gut is now c oser to a carnivore than to an ape. Associated changes include a large brain and reliance on meat to supply essential nutrients in bioavai ab e form inc uding, in particular, Iron, Zinc, essential amino acids and vitamin B12. Studies of contemporary hunter gatherer diets show an average 65% meat diet component; there are no completely vegetarian societies! Given that our evolution has been associated w th meat consumption it should be no surprise that crit cal meat derived dietary components are highly b oava lable and far more so than from plant-based sources.
Dr Nick Smith (Presentat on/Talk) from the Riddet Institute (NZ) presented data illustrat ng the huge role of red meat, milk and dairy in human nutr tion and the extreme variation between countr es and societies where excess and inadequate nutrition both exist, the extremes being malnutrit on and starvat on through lack of food versus obesity and ma nutr tion arising from excess consumption of most y ultra processed products with excess ca ories but def cient in critical nutrients and nutritional ba ance. The proportion of food wasted during production relative to distribution was also highlighted
Professor Alice Stanton (Presentat on/Ta k) from The Royal College of Surgeons, Dub in presented a powerful overv ew of the essential role of red meat and dairy foods in human nutrit on and the cr tical health risks resulting from inadequate consumpt on w th young ch ldren, young and pregnant women, the sick and the elderly the most at r sk. She also presented alarming evidence of how poor science can distort ev dence and result in highly dangerous nutritional outcomes and recommendations. Her dogged pursuit of truth and evidence relative to the 2019 Global Burden of Disease report illustrated the alarming impact that can arise when low quality evidence is ut lized on ideological grounds and high qua ity evidence ignored.
The relative strength of evidence and it's use in developing high qua ity reviews across all available studies was expertly presented by Dr Bradley Johnston (Presentation/Talk) of Texas A&M Un versity. Dr Johnstons NutriRecs statistical team had systematical y rev ewed the l terature on unprocessed red meat relationships to heart disease and cancers and found no to very low certa nty of any
negative effect of meat consumpt on A deeply troubling aspect of th s session was the extremely low quality of a majority of human nutrition studies, the heavy pol ticization of results and related ntimidation and diff culty in having research pub ished that confl cted w th ideological positions These agendas have had a huge negative mpact on our industry evident from the ear y 1990's when fat was incorrectly targeted as a major dietary health r sk and have increased in intensity s nce due to significant anti meat agendas
Without meat production we w ll not be ab e to provide essential nutrition to the predicted 9 to 10 billion human population by 2050
Current attacks on meat consumption often relate to c aimed negative, even catastrophic, relationships to environmental outcomes This s almost universally linked to emissions, particularly of methane, and almost never related to net emissions what are the net emissions when carbon s added to soils, or for that matter muscle, relative to the amount emitted. Food production for both plants and animals have various impacts on the environment such as land and water usage, greenhouse gas emissions and impact biodiversity and water systems.
The Dublin summ t presented compel ing evidence regarding the cr tical historic and current role of livestock in m tigating adverse climate change. Dr Pablo Manzano (Presentat on/Ta k) drew attention to the huge global area that for many thousands of years has been heavi y mod fied by herbivores. These areas are typica ly grasslands interspersed with shrubs and trees w th the action of wild herbivores and human nteractions including hunting and fire influenc ng the relative mix Current domestic rum nant livestock numbers are essential to ma ntain the eco ogical ba ance once provided by the historic megafauna
The large seasona migrations of nat ve l vestock resulted in ntense grazing followed by recovery and, though this process controlled the level of woody species, d stributed manure and built some of the worlds best soils through the sequestration of atmospheric carbon through grazed p ants. These functions must now be delivered by controlled grazing of our domestic ruminants with presentations from Dr Jason Rowntree (Presentation/Talk) (USA) and Max Makuvise (Presentation/Talk) (Zimbabwe) and data from advanced pasture and soil initiatives in Northern Ireland and Ireland llustrating the essential and outstandingly positive role of livestock in removing carbon from the atmosphere and mproving soil structure, water holding capacity and fertil ty while convert ng huge volumes of inedible biomass to nutrient rich and bioavai ab e human food. Terry McCosker is document ng similar outstand ng positive results in our Australian landscapes.
This capability s also central to the food:feed debate, often mistakenly used to promote p ant based food diets that supposedly are more efficient as the plants are directly consumed by humans. That is not correct. Prof Wi he m Windisch (Presentation/Talk) (Germany) presented the rea picture: for every kg of "vegan food" there are 4 to 5kg of non human ed b e byproducts. What happens to the peel, stems and leaves, straw, husks and so on that are left behind? Added to this mater al is a huge amount of human and other food processing by-products. Th nk about brewers and distil ers grains, who e cottonseed, citrus pulp and peel, weather damaged grain, waste bread, vegetable waste and processed food. These byproducts are not benign. If left to rot in the field they will contr bute to emiss ons, they may be able to be burnt, releasing carbon to the atmosphere or perhaps for power generation or, by far the most productive alternat ve, fed to ruminant livestock and converted to high quality human nutrit on, There is a cr tica balance between food that can be direct y consumed by a growing global population and the livestock needed to convert the balance This is the concept of circularity
Our Austral an landscape and climate s fragi e and the community must be aware of the reality that, more than in most regions, our livestock are critica ly mportant to achieve positive environmental outcomes At a global level agriculture ut lizes 37 1% of all land (FAOSTAT 2017) Of this proportion only a third is arab e and suitable for growing crops (FAOSTAT 2017), with a much smaller proportion able to support continuous cropping The rema n ng two thirds (26%) (FAO 2016) of non-arable land s ut l sed for grazing (FAO STAT 2017) w th ruminant species having the unique abi ity to convert material that s ined ble by humans to h gh qua ity nutr ent dense human food Austral a, due to a general y dry and fragi e c imate, has a much higher 54% of native and improved vegetat on (Land Use, Cl mateWorks Austra ia) only suitable for grazing in turn mak ng ruminants a vita resource for susta nable Austral an and management. Wh le often denigrated n soc al med a and popu ar press by P ant Based Food and Vegan activ sts, feed ots and intens ve da ry operations p ay an mportant ro e n uti isat on of by products and in mitigating the impact of c imatic fluctuation, so l and pasture damage and animal welfare. In Austra ia feed ots provide a critical ro e dur ng dry seasons and drought events by remov ng catt e from pasture that wou d otherwise be severely damaged and enabling cattle to continue to grow to optimum we ght and qual ty
