The bulls have been developed on a low energy total mixed ration consisting of corn screenings, chopped timothy/clover hay and a protein pellet. We are walking a tightrope to measure genetic variability for growth and carcass while at the same time not filling scrotums with fat and blowing feet off. The yearling ultrasound data demonstrates the moderate condition of the bulls, many with back fat levels under 2 tenths. Because of that you will not see any gaudy marbling scores or REA’s. We encourage you to utilize the carcass EPD’s and ultrasound ratios as a means to measure an individual against the population. Tim and I work every day to produce bulls that will contribute to your calf crop’s profitability. We understand you have literally an unlimited number of folks who will sell you just a bull. This great herd sire prospect was the lead bull in our 2016 Reserve Grand Champion Denver Pen-of-Five Bulls! He spent many hours on his feet in the stalls as purebred and commercial breeders alike kept getting him up and admiring him. He is a bull that is nearly ideal in his foot design and structure, being square footed, flexible in his joints and athletic on the move. His dam #6550 (pictured) is an impressive individual in her own right and from a crazy good cow family. This guy spent some time in the potential Denver pen of bulls. His mom is an older PF Impressed daughter that still is doing a nice job at 10 years of age. He fits the goal of breeding these good Charolais bulls with moderate birth weights for more live calves. He blew out the competition with a 137 IMF Ratio. He is a powerhouse individual, posting a 17.25 REA to ratio 115. #4117 weaned off 10% above the average of his contemporaries at weaning and 8% above at yearling weight. The sire of this set of brothers LT Rushmore 8060 continues to be one of the hottest sires in the breed today. Rushmore is a full brother to the dam of the breed’s most widely used A.I. sire LT Ledger 0332 P.

This is a neat made Rushmore son that started life with a super low birth weight and then had a rough go of it early on. The late summer bugs and fliies got on him bad and he struggled through the early fall and his weaning performance wasn’t special, but we decided to give him a pass and we’re glad we did. His maternal brother in our first sale had ratios all above average and this bull is coming on strong. He is extremely gentle. When we saw Cooley Royce the day he sold for $32,500, I thought he was the epitome of what a Charolais beef bull should be. This bull #4093 carries on that look as big, stout, deep-bodied and sound as any bull in the pen. He has a 106 ratio for both weaning and yearling, along with a 115 ratio for marbling. With his sire Royce being homozygous polled and out of a polled cow, we expect those scurs to be few and far between.

This was a bull calf we have admired most every day of his life. He was among the last few bulls in the Denver discussion and maybe we were wrong for excusing him from the table! He was a bull that was an absolute pleasure to halter break and got lots of head pets from our son Lane this summer! His maternal family is anchored by one of the great ones at Wienk Charolais #8742. His dam #8087 did a fantastic job with him and has another wing dinger in the pipes for next year’s offering! With a top 15% maternal rank and an above average scrotal he is a bull that could be considered to make replacement females. And with a top 30% TSI valuation, he won’t hurt anyone in the feed yard either.

Selling 2/3 interest and Spring possession I always say my favorite part of the seed stock business is being around the really good ones. I would hate to know how many hours I have spent in the pasture admiring CD Copperhead 4125 P and his mother #7006 over the years. She is one of those cows that is breathe taking. I remember telling Jen the first couple days after the cows got off the trucks from WCCC “I just hope the 7006 cow breeds true!” Has she ever! Her first bull calf born at CD was in our 2014 Denver Reserve Grand Pen of 5 and was a high seller in our first sale going to Hassebrook Charolais in Nebraska. She is now nursing a full sister to Copperhead that looks identical in type and kind. We have only flushed 2 cows since we started CD and 7006 was one of them! We had big plans for this dude to lead our Denver bulls off; unfortunately he wasn’t interested in the show life. He is a masterpiece that blends power and substance with his impeccable skeletal design and structure. His Canadian great grand sire dogs his growth EPD’s but his growth ratio’s well above the average prove that he has the performance to stand the long haul.

This would be a good time to write about Vaquero and his pedigree heritage. TR Vaquero 2740Z ET was produced in the famous Thomas Ranch herd in South Dakota. He was sired by the Denver Grand Champion Diablo, out of the also famous Wilma. Her next calf was CML Encore who was a National Reserve Grand Champion Bull. Vaquero’s dam is none other than TR Ms Kaycee 7787T, the 40th National Champion Female in 2009 in Fort Worth. Her dam was also a Denver Grand Champion Female in 2007 and Ms Kaycee’s sire is the National Champion Fire Water, the sire of 7 National Champions.

His maternal grand dam #428 originated in the WCCC herd that ended up as the foundation cow herd to start Cannon-Deutsch Charolais, but she was purchased away from the WCCC herd earlier and today is a featured donor at Derry Wright Charolais in Missouri. Derry always told me that he tried to buy the dam of this bull #6015 as a bred heifer for “significant money” but was never successful. She is a perfect uddered, easy to handle cow that has an excellent X-Factor replacement daughter at her side this winter. When we bought Vaquero he just got sampled on a few cows just to figure out what exactly we had and where we would go with him. Of the few bulls we have, they easily gave us the confidence to breed a large fraction of our herd to him going forward. #4069’s grand sire Diablo is homozygous polled but does occasionally throw scurs. Diablo was also Canadian bred and has to prove his EPD values from 0 according to the American International Charolais Association. With a weaning ratio of 102 and a REA ratio of 107 we are expecting their EPD values to steadily increase. His dam #9156 put a son in the Domain herd of Wisconsin for Richard and his Daughter Rebbecca Domain.

CD Montezuma 4126 was a member of our 2016 Reserve National Western Grand Champion Pen of Five bulls! Judge Chris Mullinix made the comment during the show that “4126 had the most true power and muscle of anything in the entire show!” He comes by it honestly; his mother #5527 is a moderate framed, capacious female that packs a punch. Her son WCCC Whiplash was a senior herdsire for WCCC before we bought the herd and his first sons were a large group in our first bull sale when we sold 9 of his sons for an average of $3,078, all less than 12 months of age. This bull scanned almost an 18 inch rib eye and the 107 IMF ratio to go with it makes him a prime candidate if you feed your own calves and retain ownership.

An interesting individual here. A bull with a pedigree loaded with northern genetics, we can expect to have some birth weight behind him. But he brings power along with it. A weaning ratio at 107, and yearling ratio at 104. Perhaps best of all is what lays beneath the skin, with nearly a 17 inch REA which is 12% bigger than the average. He also had just 0.14 rump fat and still posted a 2.71 IMF score to ratio 118.

Marbling Score (MARB) Marbling is a subjective measure of the amount of intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle. Marbling score is the primary component of USDA Quality grade and selection for increased Marbling Score EPD should result in cattle with higher quality grades at the same age endpoints. Terminal Sire Index (TSI) The AICA Terminal Sire Index (TSI) is a formal method of combing Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) – BWT, WWT, YWT, REA, HCW, MARB and FAT – into one single value on which to base selection decisions. The TSI represents a dollar index , this dollar index is to be interpreted much like single trait EPD. For example, if Sire A’s index is $191.66 and Sire B’s index is $200.00, then we would expect Sire B’s offspring to average $8.34 more net return ($200.00 minus $191.66) than Sire A’s offspring.

This is the bull that everyone found in our Denver Reserve Grand Champion Pen of Five bulls. #4149 has the belly and dimension that everyone craves today. Fusion was our choice of all the Charolais bulls at Kris Blacks club calf world in Oklahoma. His sire was the National Champion Fire Water, that has sired more National Champions than any. We do get a little more birth weight with Fusion, but here is the one that comes in with an 89 lbs. birth weight and should work anywhere.

This bull has to be the easiest bull I have ever halter broke in my 23 years of messing with cattle. With an A-1 disposition, he is always waiting for a scratching but never comes begging. This is a very extended bull that will add the extra length and extension to make those calves weigh big come fall. With a 762 lbs. weaning weight and 16.84 REA, the power is abundant.

We love using Knob Creek for these terminal oriented bulls. This is a bull that is moderate in his frame and loaded with product from nose to tail! Every year there is that one stud muffin that always stands out. Rain, sun or snow, #5042 is the man! A really nice patterned pair of full ET brothers! Perhaps the most over looked advantage of embryo transfer allows commercial producers to latch on to multiple brothers of the same age to produce the most consistent, uniform sired calf crop possible. The disadvantage of embryo transfers is that someone always draws the crumby recipient dam like 5072 did, but he will move on past that rougher start in life. Their donor dam 1128 is a legend in our herd and the breed. Half interest recently sold at 15 years of age for $30,000. This is a bull I have really enjoyed watching develop from day one. It was easy to do given his mom is a beautiful patterned 13 year old brood cow. She is a maternal sister to the legend “Blizzard”. A full sister was a featured donor at the Thomas Ranch for a decade. His sire BNE Adrenaline was a bull I found in Canada in 2014, he featured a 1,550 lbs. yearling stat. The American Charolais Association makes imported bulls 0 in all EPD categories and as the bulls produce progeny they build their own EPD profile. Unfortunately we lost this bull after his first breeding season with just a couple calves coming. Therefore an astute breeder will realize that his genetic makeup far exceeds his dismal EPD profile.
