Early Site Plan

This cross-disciplinary studio partnered with land-rich Black churches in the Rainier Valley to create affordable housing and community assets in order to preserve displaced Black communities in the Seattle area.

My team worked with new policy for zoning allowances to help Emerald City Bible Fellowship have a larger impact with the church’s underdeveloped site.

New local ROOP policy increased both height and density allowances in local zoning, boosting the total affordable housing unit count.

Housing Option Explorations

Mixed Family Housing Ownership Path

Senior Housing

Multiple housing options were explored and built into the client’s proposal packages.

The team developed a phased approach for the project construction timeline to aid the church in their future goals.

The studio’s finished project deliverables were shared with the church community to support grant proposals and funding options.

Phased Approach

CNC Fabrication Structural Boxes

The following studio explorations played with a system of modular CNC-ed plywood structural boxes, inspired by the open source designs of the WikiHouse project.

The system was used to create housing solutions in multiple projects with the shared goals of adaptable designs, light structures, volunteer assembly, and accessible materials to meet changing community needs.

Our work with the UW FabLab explored prototyping scale samples of CNC structural plywood box systems for the studio projects.

CNC Plankhouse

M.Arch Studio 2023

The Shoalwater Bay Tribe needed housing on the mountain tops in their upland expansion for the next generation.

My team developed a fast assembling and customizable residence utilizing the WikiHouse box structures combined with self-sustaining living systems.

The CNC Plankhouse is designed to provide a faster and tribally produced construction over traditional stick frame construction.

Wiki box structures allow for on-site fabrication with a portable CNC, creating a light-on-theland structure for community housing.

Deep box structures are opportunity for high insulation values for passive house standards. structurAl Box wAll detAil

Each house can be expanded into the site topography as future space for the growing community.

The coastal wind from the west can be captured for energy; enough rainwater can be collected by the roof, and vermicomposting is used to provide fertilizer for productive gardens for off-grid living.

TINI House M.Arch Studio 2024

Working with Sound Foundations and Tiny Home Villages to help our homeless neighbors, our studio re-imagined the construction of the tiny homes to take on current production challenges.

The studio explored home shape options that worked under zoning requirements, giving village developers variety as they meet community needs.

WALL BOX ASSEMBLY

We customized the WikiHouse system to create our own parts library for a new TiniHouse designed to be assembled by a volunteer force.

TINY HOME ASSEMBLY

joining wall and roof boxes used wood tension staples and traditional sill plates to band boxes together at the roof and platform joint.

A full graphic manual document was developed alongside the TINI prototypes to instruct volunteers through the full assembly process.

TINI HOUSE ASSEMBLY

Multiple versions of small-scale cardboard models were used to work through the assembly and connection designs. We limited materials to screws, plywood, wood glue, and nominal 2x6 lumber.

The laser cut models were invaluable for fine tuning assembly and testing erection methods for the graphic manual. STEP 16

Full scale fabrication of the TINI system was carried out by the studio team, testing the design with student volunteers in the UW FabLab.

Valuable assembly experience feedback went to informed the graphic manual.

Our full scale prototype showcased wall, window, and roof box types from the developed parts library. The partial model was reconfigured to be a break shelter for donation to a new LIHI Tiny Village.

Urban Reuse

61 Cannon St, in Charleston, SC, transformed an existing barrel gym into five housing units, converting 5,000 SF of existing gym space into 10,000 SF of residential space.

Front offices were re-imagined into neighborhood commercial space with a sizable roof deck amenity. Custom aluminum screens provide privacy and allow light into the living spaces despite the tight site.

The three-bedroom units are designed between bowstring trusses and brick pilasters in the existing structure to bring unique housing to the historical Charleston neighborhood.

Historic Mixed Use

Charleston, SC - 2022

A sympathetic rehabilitation and renovation of this 1850’s Charleston residence and corner store lifted the long neglected historic house to a renewed mixed-use property.

The house had a corner store integrated into the residence basement since the 1920’s and required special considerations for bringing the mixed-use renovation up to modern standards.

Rehabilitating the character of both the interior and exterior was achieved with careful removal of unwanted additions and alterations while recovering historic detailing for re-fabrication.

1/2 HR FLOOR

1 HR ROOF

Discovery of the original columns in the enclosed porch allowed for the piazza to be restored to historical condition, reclaiming desirable outdoor space.

HR FLOOR

The shared structure posed code challenges for the new short-term rental units that sit over the renewed restaurant and basement shop spaces. Calculation of the Alternate Code Compliance allowed the historical fabric to meet modern safety code.

Historic Infill Charleston, SC 2023

This downtown lot infill project included a historic house renovation, an addition to a second historic house, and construction of two new residences on a historic site.

The design focused on creating a unified sense across all four structures. Each newly constructed house corresponds to the street-front house it is positioned behind, keeping with local customs.

SKILL EXPLORATION

Digital Fabrication

Playfully exploring fabrication methods of 3D modeling, 3D printing, and CNC machines.

Parametric Modeling

Learning Grasshopper script and parametric modeling of brick walls to create a public space.

Grasshopper Script

Exploring communication with AI image generators to produce the a wooden bus stop design.

Discovering ways to reverse engineer and replicate the AI form with Grasshopper, making the generated design workable.

Sketching Fall ‘23

Taking time to explore and sketch is a joy that continuously challenges. Working proportions, pushing value, and capturing details of the place helps keep a practiced hand in thinking graphically and communicating visually.
