A t noon t h e K l a n e m e r g e d f r o m t h e f r o n t d o o r o f C i t y H a l l , i n t h e i r hoods and robes, carrying a large .Amerikkkan f l a g and a banner reading "Peaceful P a t r b t i c Protest by the K K K . " B i l l W i l k i n s o n , G r a n d D r a g o n of t h e I n v i s i b l e E m p i r e o f t h e K n i g h t s o f t h e K K K , spoke t h r o u ^ a large sound system. A t times he was d r o w n e d o u t by " D e a t h to the K l a n " and other chants. The Klan played " G o d Bless A m e r i c a " and o t h e r p a t r i o t k : songs over the speakers and returned to City, HaU after *5 minutes.

A f t e r sneaking o u t t h e bad< dcxsr, tiie Kim left town in a f e e d i n g c a r a v a n led by p a t r o l c a r s . L o c a l teenagers and a n t i - K l a n activists slipped t h r o u g h p o l i c e lines and showered t h e K l a n w i t h stones, shattering a windshield on one Klan car.

In H o u s t o n , t h e p o l i c e called it " s t a t e - o f - t h e - a r t " crowd control. I t meant 1800 poBoe o n ?,000 rfemonstrators, plainclothes " t a i l s " on a l l k n o w n a n t i - K l a n activists, selective seardies o f demoretrators, and a m i d n i g h t r a i d on an anti-Klan punk benefit.

There were roadblocks at interstate exits, pat searches of everyone entering the vk±uty o f T o w n H a l l ^occupied by the KKK^ and snarling police dogs on chains. *• I n San A n t o n i o , so m u c h o f t h e c i t y was sealed off by police b a r r i c a d e s t h a t p r o t e s t e r s h a r d l y saw t h e K l a n , and even t h e K l a n complained t h a t t h e y w e r e b e i n g d e n i e d t h e i r ' V i g h f t o a pitolic rally. *• I n a suburban shopping mall in Connecticut, cops o u t n u m b e r e d shoppers and S W A T t e a m s l u r k e d i n the l i n g e r i e w h e n the Klan came to r e c r u i t and a n t i - K l a n d e m o n s t r a t o r s s t o p p e d them.

A New England factory town was turned into what k x a l papers c a l l e d " a n a r m e d c a m p " in a f u t i l e attempt to herd demonstrators into a stadium w i t h the Klan!

A m e r i K K K a , 1983. N e v e r has so much naked p o l i c e p o w e r been m o b i l i z e d t o p r o t e c t t h e a b i l i t y o f fascists t o m a r c h and r a l l y in t h e streets. These events show not only t h e state's c o m m i t m e n t t o b u i l d t h e K l a n , b u t also t h e growing s t r e n g t h of the o p p o s i t i o n .

The resistance t o the Klan is becomir^ a movement, and n o w h e r e c a n t h e K l a n m a r c h w i t h o u t massive oolice protection.

'See centerfold for photos.> Houston, Texas The K K K t h a t m a r c h e d on A p r i l 2 i n H o u s t o n was the same " K n i g h t s o f t h e White Camelia" and " K l a n Boat '^atrol" t h a t m e t w i t h d i s a s t e r i n A u s t i n on F e b r u a r y 1 9 t h . Based p r i m a r i l y i n t h e Houston/Pasadena a r e a , t h e y were marching doser to home this t i m e .

Houston is not Austin, where t h e r e is a lohg h i s t o r y o f leadership from groups lB<e the Black Citizers Task Force in the Black community and w h e r e t h e r e has been 3 y e a r s o f c o n s i s t e n t anti-Klan work among white people. H o u s t o n is a c o n s e r v a t i v e c i t y w i t h a Chicago-style police force infamous for b r u t a l i t v . Still, %000 people c a m e o u t t o oppose t h e Klan march and made 'Tteath to the K l a n " the main slogan of the day.

The k l a n completed their 18-minute march at a n e a r - r m , even t h o u g h n o t h i n g was t h r o w n and protesters 'vere kept behind rope barriers, Sb< a n t i - K l a n a c t i v i s t s w e r e a r r e s t e d b y p o l i c e , who had m o b i l i z e d t h e largest force in Houston's history to protect the K l a n . The day was a d e f e a t for t h e K l a n because i t ^ w e d that they c a n t m a r d i unopposed e v e n in t h e i r o w n backyard and i t was a step forward for the a n t i - K l a i m o v e m e n t , w h i d i now has a - I B A K C chapter in Houston.

Meriden, Connecticut T h e K l a n held t h e i r t h i r d a n n u a l " W h i t e C h r i s t i a n S o l i d a r i t y D a y " r a l l y on the steps of Meriden C i t y Hall on A p r i l 2 9 . T h r e e h u n d r e d p e o p l e ttaned out to oppose t h e m , a smaller and less m i l i t a r t crowd t h a n l a s t y e a r . E f f o r t s t o orgemize a n t i - r a c i s t p e o p l e f r o m all over were frustrated by an almost t o t a l m e d i a " w h i t e o u t , " by p o l i c e roadblod<s t h a t turned cars away, and by the low level of development of the anti-Klan m o v e m e n t a m o n g w h i t e people in New EnglarxJ at this t i m e . Some pacifist and reformist groups and even some anti-Klan groups had joined w i t h the state in urging people to stay away.

S t i l l , t h e o p p o s i t i o n was e n o i ^ so t h a t the K l a n d i d n t a t t e m p t t o m a r c h as i n p r e v i o u s y e a r s and had to remain behind police lines and hide in C i t y H a l l befc«e and after the rally.

Checkpoints were used for blod<s a r o m d C i t y Hall, forcing everyone t o submit t o a search i n w h i c h even sandwiches w e r e confiscated.

The C i t y Hall in the center of t h e sealed a r e a was surrounded by a ring of 200 riot-equipped police, bad<ed i p by SWAT teams, snipers on r o o f t o p s , and dDgs on chains.

T h e N a z i s and K l a n w e r e totally (frowned o u t by t h e c r o w d which chanted, "E)e«th to the K l a n , " " N a z i s and K l a n , scum of l a i d , " and "Cops and tfie Klan go hand in hand," among other chants.

The Nazis, Klan and police were h i t by flying vegetables and other objects at several p o i n t s in t h e d e m o n s t r a t i o n . The p o l i c e a r r e s t e d f o i r people who f a c e misdismeanor c h a r g e s .

C . on August 27th under t h e barmer of s y m b o l i s m a n d r e f o r m i s m , even as a l l t h i s t a k e s p l a c e , t h e c o n d i t i o n s o f War i n A m e r i k k k a are escalating and intensifving.

This w a r began w i t h tiie coming o f the first europeans t o A f r i c a f o r t h e purpose o f b u y i n g a n d t r a f f i c k i n g i n h u m a n beings t o serve as slaves. This was t h e c o m m e n c e m e n t o f a w a r b e t w e e n t h e oppressed, enslaved and eventually colonized A f r i k a n masses a n d t h e oppressing, e n s l a v i n g a n d colonizing europeans.

Everywhere that Afrikans were dispersed became a p o l i t i c a l and m i l i t a r v f r o n t i n t h i s struggle for freedom and t o end oppression.

This r e a l i t y o f war was i n no way diminished by the fact that A f r k a n s a c t e d as m i d d l e m e n , translators and mercenaries for the barbaric interests of t h e w h i t e m a r a u d e r s .

Here in A m e r i k k k a , d u r i n g s l a v e r y , t h i s reality of war was in no way diminished by the role p l a y e d by U n c l e T o m s , house n s, s n i t c h e s , a n d mercenaries.

A n d e v e n i n t h i s day a n d t i m e , our b u d d i n g w a r o f N e w A f r i k a n national l i b e r a t i o n is i n n o w a y d i m i n i s h e d b y t h e e x i s t e n c e o f r e f o r m i s t s , t r a i t o r s , snitches and black r u m i n g dogs o f U.S. i m p e r i a l i s m .

They e x i s t just as o u r movement exists. They serve W bolster t h e tyranny o f t h e U.S. b o u r g e o i s i e , just as — in counteroosrtion — tfie masses o f our people seek t o free ourselves f r o m A m e r i k k k a n domination.

Recently an a r t i c l e appeared in t h e bourgeoisie press ' N e w Y o r k T i m e s , June 1 1 , l'?83^ e n t i t l e d : " I n v e s t i g a t o r Sees Links Among Heavily A r m e d R i g h t - W i n g G r o u p s . " I t s t a r t s o u t , " F e d e r a l a u t h o r i t i e s ... say they are u n c o v e r i n g some t r o u b l i n g l i n k s a m o n g s m a l l groups o f h e a v i l y a r m e d right wing extremists" w i t h ties t h a t " c u t across o r g a n i z a t i o n a l l i n e s f r o m t h e N a z i P a r t y a n d tfie K u Klux Klan t o radical elements of t h e f a r m protest movement."

I t goes on t o state t h a t , "adherents are armed i n some cases w i t h explosives, grenade l a u n c h e r s , and a u t o m a t i c and semi-automatic weapons and trained in guerilla warfare."

The a r t i d e also speaks about the existence of a secret network of "safehouses," s t o c k p i l e s o f heavy armaments, "counter-insurgency senruriars," p a r a m i l i t a r y t r a i n i n g camps, " j o i n t m i l i t a r y maneuvers" between Klansmen and other f o r m a t i o n s such as Posse C o m l t a t y s a n d t h e ^^ inutemen; and most importantly, o f a "common thread" which is unifying t h e w h i t e r i g h t k n o w n See War Is War, p a g e ? 0

The m o u n t i n g a t t a c k s on t h e a n t i - K l a n m o v e m e n t , a n d t h e a t t e m p t s t o criminalize i t , have t o be seen as p a r t o f t h e g o v e r n m e n t ' s s t r a t e g y t o prop up and to promote white supremacist f a s c i s t o r g a n i z a t i o n s and d e s t r o y n a t i o n a l liberation struggles. T o the extent that the state's attacks have succeeded in intimidating some n u m b e r s o f p e o p l e , defeating the current offensive poses a real challenge t o t h e a n t i - K l a n movement. ''"he c o n t i n u i n g r e v e l a t i o n s o f f e d e r a l government/FBI collaboration w i t h t h e K l a n c a n no longer be w r i t t e n o f f as m e r e l y a case or two of misconduct. The pattern of direct p o l i c e and F B I participation i n racist organizations dating b a c k f r o m a t t a c k s on t h e C i v i l R i g h t s Movernent, through the Greensboro massacre and coverup o f 1979, c o n t i n u e s t o t h i s d a y .

C r o s s - m e m b e r s h i p between the Klan, police and Soldier of Fortune style mercenary n e t w o r k s has b r o u g h t a q u a l i t a t i v e l y new l e v e l o f m i l i t a r y sophistication and power t o t h e w h i t e supremacist movement.

Exposing and f i g h t i n g these developments is vitally important to every progressive person w h o hates t h e K K K a n d all t h a t i t stands for. The government w i l l n e v e r a d m i t t h a t b e h i n d t h e K l a n m a r c h e s i n " D e f e n s e o f W h i t e Christian

A m e r i c a " lies a natranal strategy t o o r g a n i z e a n a r m e d fascist movement i n this country t h a t w i l l attack a l l struggles f o r human rights, defend U.S. i m p e r i a l i s t w a r (as i n E l S a l v a d o r ) a n d consolidate a mass base among white people t h a t w i l l fight t o preserve the empire and the system o f t h e U.S. T h e K K K is p a r t i c u l a r l y b e i n g developed as a counterinsurgency weapon against revolutionary forces t h a t f i g h t f o r n a t i o n a l l i b e r a t i o n a n d t h e i r s u p p o r t e r s . T h e K l a n is guiding many rightwing paramilitary and religious f o r c e s t o u n i t e inder its leadership. The direct counterinsurgency attacks g a i n s t ttie John Brown A n t i - K l a n C o m m i t t e e , including house break-ins, sabotage o f c a r s , a r r e s t s and d i s i n f o r m a t i o n leaked t o t h e press, is a d i r e c t r e s u l t of our building solidarity with t h e New Afrikan Independence M o v e m e n t , w h i c h is also under direct attack by t h e state and the K l a n . These organizations are being built and,promoted today because the economic, political and s o c i a l c r i s i s w h i c h is s t a r t i n g t o w r a c k U.S. s o c i e t y is creating a breeding ground among many d i s e n c h a n t e d a n d disorganized vi^ite people for just such fascist solutions. T h e massive r a c i s t b a c k l a s h which surfaced recently during t h e Chicago mayoral race is a d e a r signal t h a t t h e K l a n has a p o t e n t i a l l y huge amount of SLpport among disaffected white peoole.

I n d i r e c t o o p o s i t i o n t o this are the m i l i t a n t Black communities, whose c r y o f " D e a t h t o t h e K l a n " is n o w b e c o m i n g a mass demand at the base of the anti-Klan movement. ""Tie f a c t t h a t t h e r e a r e growing numbers o f white peoole who realize that t h e Klan and w h i t e s u p r e m a c y w i l l n e v e r b e " b a n n e d " o u t o f e x i s t e n c e by t h e government; t h a t i t m u s t be d e s t r o y e d t h r o u g h s t r u g g l e , is a r e a l t h r e a t t o U . S . imperialism, '''he possibility that t h e anti-Klan movement w i l l d e v e l o p and u n i t e w ' t h e m e r g i n g national liberation struggles m t h i s c o u n t r y against t h e U.S. i m p e r i a l i s t s t a t e is an advance t h a t ttie government w i l l do everything t o prevent.

This is why, even at its beginning stages, the anti-Klan movement is now being t a r g e t t e d f o r attack.

T h i s a t t a c k is b e i n g designed a n d c a r r i e d o u t by m a n y o f t h e same r e p r e s s i v e f o r c e s ''such as the FBI) which are now working to destroy t h e r e v o l u t i o n a r y leadership o f t h e New Afrikan, Puerto Rican, Mexicano and Native American movements.

F o l l o w i n g t h e street battles against the Klan and p o l i c e i n W a s h i n g t o n , D . C . i n . N o v e m b e r , 1 9 8 2 , A u s t i n , T e x a s i n F e b r u a r y , 1983 a n d numerous o t h e r c o n f r o n t a t i o n s , t h e s t a t e has moved s w i f t l y t o d e v e l o p a m a j o r , multi-level response. The features o f t h e p l a n t o p r o t e c t t h e k l a n and stop t h e resistance from growing are now becoming d e a r .

F I R S T , t h e g o v e r n m e n t a n d m e d i a are working together to consolidate t h e ideological/legal foundatkjn , based on d t i n g the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees t h e K l a n t h e absolute r i g h t t o e x i s t . P r o t e c t i n g the Klan's "freedom o f speech" i n f a c t means d e f e n d i n g t h e i r f r e e d o m t o r e c r u i t and engage i n paramilitary t r a i n i n g and a c t i v i t y . D o i n g t h i s enables t h e s t a t e t o label forces c o m m i t t e d t o t h e t o t a l d e s t r u c t i o n o f w h i t e s u p r e m a c y as a n t i - d e m o c r a t i c . The report o f the Austin, Texas Grand 3 u r y ' s e t up t o " i n v e s t i g a t e " t h e F e b . 19th d e m o n s t r a t i o n ) brings thfe point into sharp focus. "The first lesson is t h a t any g r o u p ' i . e . t h e Klan> no m a t t e r h o w l o a t h s o m e i t s goals, has t h e r i g h t t o express i t s e l f t h r o u g h m a r c h e s , parades and demonstrations. We have learned t o our considerable alarm t h a t t h e r e a r e some p e o p l e i n o u r c o m m u n i t y who apparently k n o w n o t h i n g about w h a t f r e e d o m o f speech means."

By c y n i c a l l y t u r n r n g t h e r e a l i t y o f r a c i s t terror upside down, the U.S. is attempfing to hold the anti-Klan movement responsible f o r the threat t o freedom and civil liberty.

FBI Klansman Cleared in Liuzzo Murder

A F e d e r a l j u d g e d e n i e d a s u i t against t h e F B I b y t h e c h i l d r e n of c i v i l rights worker Viola L i u z z o , m u r d e r e d i n 1965 b y K l a n s m e n , one o f w h o m was F B I agent Gary Liuzzos argued t h a t t h e F B I '''homas Ro>we. k n e w o f t h e p l a n t o k i l l t h e i r m o t h e r , and i n fact, Rowe fired t h e fatal shot. The judge ruled t h a t though the F B I knew o f the plan they were under no o b l i g a t i o n t o s t o p i t b e c a u s e " n o s p e c i f i c F e d e r a l s t a t u t e was v i o l a t e d . " H e accepted t h e FBFs a r g u m e n t t h a t Rowe's shot had missed. Anthony Liuzzo Jr. said, " I swear i t was as i f he 'the judge) had n o t even gone t o t h e t r i a l ... because I feel verv strongly t h ^ t we p r o v e d n e g l i g e n c e a n d a l l t h e f a c t s ^^were overlooked." Still on the F B I Payroll, Rowe now lives in Georgia under a new identity.

Punk Rockers Attack Nazis in Germany West Germany, May 2 1 . Five thousand punk r o c k e r s and angry youth surrounded a hall where SS v e t e r a n s w e r e h a v i n g a r e u n i o n d i n n e r , chanting "Nazis go home!" A VW bus filled w i t h uniformed neo-Nazis was a t t a c k e d b y t h e d e m o n s t r a t o r s , t h e doors were torn o f f and t h e Nazis teargassed, b e f o r e t h e p r o t e s t e r s w e r e d r i v e n away b y police w i t h mace.

The Chicago Mayoral Election:

A No-Win This past A p r i l , after a t w o month campaign marked by racist h y s t e r i a — described by one observer as being " l i k e one long, continuous Klan r a l l y " — H a r o l d Weishington w a s e l e c t e d a s C h i c a g o ' s f i r s t Black mayor.

The c i t y was t h r o w n i n t o t u r m o i l as 8 0 % o f t h e w h i t e D e m o c r a t s crossed p a r t y lines t o vote for tfie white RepLfoUcan candidate, Bernard Epton, w h i l e an unprecedented number of Black voters, along w i t h a large coalition o f p r o g r e s s i v e / l e f t w h i t e groups a n d i n d i v i d u a l s , turned o u t t o vote Washington into office. The national D e m o c r a t i c p a r t y t h r e w i t s weight behind Washington, while the local Democratic machine balked a t t h e idea of a B l a c k r e f o r m - o r i e n t e d candidate and supported Epton.

The Washington campaign and election had an impact far beyond Chicago. The depth o f w h i t e r a c i s m that was displayed drew national a t t e i t k j n . Washir^jton's vkrtory has sparked voter registration drives i n Boston srid other cities, and progressive coeilitkms a r e f o r m i n g t o c a m p a i g n f o r Black Democratk: candidates. 3ssse Jackson is c o n d u c t i n g h i s S o u t h e r n crusade f o r v o t e r r e g i s t r a t i o n ( m e e t i n g w i t h t h e lUcss o f George W a l l a c e ) and p r o m o t i n g t h e idea o f a B l a c k Presdential candidate.

R e p o r t s o f p o l i c e b r u t a l i t y appeared almost daily in the Defender, Chicago's B l a c k newspaper. There have been a number of w h i t e power rallies i n Chicago i n r e c e n t years. There are several K K K and Posse Comitatus chapters around Chicago a n d t h r o u g h o u t I l l i n o i s , a n d Nazis a n d a neo-Nazi groiq> c a l l e d t h e " A m e r i c a F i r s t C o m m i t t e e " In southern Illinois the o p e r a t e openly.

"Christian Patriots Defense League" has a p a r a m i l i t a r y t r a i n i n g c a m p a n d has t r a i n e d hundreds of white people in preparatton f o r " t h e coming race war." These g r o i ^ have done tiieir best t o p r o m o t e r a c i s t h y s t e r i a a r o u n d t h e W a s h i n g t o n election and are taking advantage o f the opportunity t o r e c r u i t n e w p e o p l e t o t h e i r organizations.

I n the face o f this right-wing onslaight, many white peopte took t o wearing Washington b u t t o n s t o s y m b o l i z e their opposition t o the racism t h a t was sweeping t h r o t ^ their communities. Otfiers w e r e m o v e d t o j o i n Washington's c a m p a i g n .

Goshen is over t w o hours from New York, where most of t h e support f o r t h e F r e e d o m F i g h t e r s is centered. The "routine" was evident f r o m the first, as the supporters found the courthouse r i n g e d w i t h d e p u t i e s and police armed w i t h automatic weapons, plus FBI T e r r o r i s t Task F o r c e agents a n d a t t a c k dogs.

When t h e y c a m e i n t o t h e c o u r t r o o m , t h e F r e e d o m Fighters greeted their sipporters w i t h t h e battle cry of t h e N e w A f r i k a n Independence M o v e m e n t , " F r e e t h e L a n d ! " a n d shouted " F r e e w a n a m ^^orales^' as a show o f s o l i d a r i t y w i t h t h e Puerto Rican patriot captured t w o days before.

Their supporters stood as a show of respect f o r t h e F r e e d o m F i g h t e r s - a n d s a t d o w n w h e n the iudge came in. Two marshalls w e r e sent d i r e c t l y t o A h m e d O b a f e m i , on t h e aisle, t o demand that he s t a n d . H e refused, s a y i n g t h a t as a N e w A f r i k a n he did not recognize Ihe legitimacy of the court. T h i r t y others refused w i t h h i m . T h e p o l i c e began p u l l i n g a t h i m . People rose t o protest and the police attacked.

F o u r people w e r e dragged f r o m t h e courtroom and b e a t e n i n t h e h a l l , w h i l e t h e o t h e r s w e r e l o c k e d i n t h e c o u r t r o o m . T h e Freedom F i l t e r s walked out saying they wouW not p a r t i c i p a t e w h i l e t h e i r s u p p o r t e r s w e r e being attad<ed. Hundreds o f oolice were mobilized f r o m all over the state, p a r k i r ^ was p r o h i b i t e d f o r 18 b l o c k s a r o u n d t h e s t a d i u m , a l l businesses were closed and residents were advised by police t o clear t h e area.

T h i s w e n t b e y o n d t h e usual strategy of protecting t h e Klan as a " l e g i t i m a t e " f o r c e , t o a c t u a l l y m a k i n g a n t i - K l a n activity illegal.

J B A K C announced o i r intention not to go i n t o a s t a d i u m w i t h t h e Klan a i d the police. We saw i t n o t o n l y as a p o t e n t i a l t r a p , b u t as a d a n g e r o u s p r e c e d e n t f o r t h e m o v e m e n t as a whole and a t e s t case f o r g o v e r n m e n t c o u n t e r i n s u r g e n c y , i n which any kind of protest would be defined, c o n t a i n e d a n d c o n t r o l l e d b y t h e police. We announced a t a press conference on the morning o f t h e K l a i i r a l l y t h a t w e i n t e n d e d t o defy t h e injunction prohibiting anti-Klan a c t i v i t y w i t h i n 1500 f e e t o f t h e stadium.
