My name is Randy Hoover.

I am a passionate associate architect and designer who excels in collaborative environments, quickly adapts to new skillsets, and provides innovative design deliverables and insight. I possesses four plus years of experience in the residential and commercial architecture industries with additional practical knowledge in the fields of marketing and graphic design. I apply expert software proficiencies to provide management with high quality architectural solutions while adapting to deadlines and client needs. Currently seeking mentorship in the fields of Architecture, Design, Communications, and Marketing. If you see just one project in this portfolio, I hope you’ll take some time viewing the LGBTQ Spatial Typologies section on page 18. I still define my work process, visual style, and design convictions on the work I completed over the summer of 2017 and I hope to continue to benefit the LGBTQ community with architecture and design. Thank you for your consideration, Randy Design Philosophy I find joy in the making. Prototyping, constructing, dissolving, painting, experimenting, researching, repainting, and building again are all part of why I have come to see design as my calling. I am committed to making the world a better place. I do this by designing an inclusive and authentic experience, by providing frameworks for diversity, and by living for service and leading as a fun, energetic example. interests Staying active in the LGBTQ community of Cleveland through intramural sports and community engagement, running weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons, and volunteering my graphic design skills for friends and family. Oh, and I make some killer brussel spr

visualization professional renderings

Architectural visualization is more than imagery or static representation of a three dimensional form. With the right stylistic and artistic edits, a rendering can transform your conception of a project entirely. I primarily use Adobe Photoshop CC to render architectural, also utilizing various 3D programs and simple rendering engines to produce a skeleton onto which an architectural motif and atmosphere are grafted. Details and conceptual planning are the most important part of my process. Before even finalizing the model or construction sometimes I will begin to collect pieces of writing, reference imagery, or even music to associate with the final mood of the rendering. For the lakeside residence pictured on the right I was listening to a bit of London Grammar while thinking of the beautiful sunset we all get to see driving home on the shoreway. I wanted to best represent my perceived value of a lakefront property through stellar sunset reflections and a tranquil dinner party on the porch.

architecture constructed works

I have had the incredible privilege of working alongside a team of experienced architects, detailers, and designers. We have collaborated to produce a long list of successful projects, but I am most proud to have taken the design lead on multiple constructed works around Northeastern Ohio. The projects shown here are a selection of recent work on which I have interacted with the client or taken the lead on proposing designs to the client. I most enjoy interfacing with clients as the first-contact for design services, including: 2D and 3D renderings, interior design packages, graphic design / illustration projects, and general design consultancy. I have participated in over 100 schematic design proposals for commercial and residential tenants throughout the United States I am versed in reparing the requisite construction documents for these proejcts, including: site plans, life-safety plans, accessibility details, floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, roof plans, interior and exterior elevations, room and door schedules, and construction / wall details and sections. I strongly believe that if you seek joy as an answer in your designs you will find only success.

graphic design volunteer projects

I find enjoyment in time spent working as a designer outside of architecture, most often in graphic design and illustration. These projects function as a low-risk way to try out more adventurous design styles and techniques early in my career. I was brought on to act as the communications director after a year or so of my graphic-designer relationship with Stonewall Sports Cleveland. In the summer of 2018 we announced a new sport that successfully expanded the diversity and size of our membership. I completed the design of this illustration in stages over the course of one week, adding details and information as time went on to effectively tease the announcement that we would expand. This project is simple and neat compared to the rigorous theoretical and conceptual work that designers utilize in a professional environment, but I strongly believe that simple ideas achieve stellar results if executed with the right intention and intuition. The volleyball announcement process represents my love of how design can be joyous and diverse. All design is a political act, impossible to operate without context. and I ask:

Why not lean into the fun of it? teaser images

competition work uli urban design

Graduate students at the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative participate in a yearly competition run by the Urban Land Institute that takes place over the course of two weeks. Students work in teams of up to five to develop relevant and practical development initiatives for a unique site and submit the results of that work for competitive judging. All images shown are of my own design, but conceptual and narrative work are shared with four other interdisciplinary teammates. The problem statement for this competition included providing a complete waterfront remediation of the area with co-working spaces and multifamily residential buildings. Without enough time to visit the site we began by distilling essential information about the area from available GIS software. We overlaid this information and identified key hubs of activity in the city, eventually revealing striated layers of public access to the waterfront and disjointed neighborhood connectivity. The challenge became: how do you make an interstitial area hospitable for both ecology and community? We responded by amplifying the diverse functions of a simple boardwalk geometry and threading intentional symbiosis through the community. Joy adjacent to stewardship, protection adjacent to education, surprise adjacent to the mundane.

design research lgbtq spatial typologies Read the Final Project Brief here I decided to spend my final academic semester in graduate school investigating my own heritage in the LGBTQ community and how design can affect positive change in a newly normative subculture. Initial research led to the construction of a problem statement: while defensive architectures disappear in the face of commodification of the queer lifestyle, how can architecture provide a bastion for that which is still non-normative? I proposed the “Get Bent!” pop-up festival in an abandoned factory in Cleveland to identify the spatial consequences of modern queer occupation. This combination of pop-up urban design ‘s placemaking principles with LGBTQ popculture standards allowed me to distill the built environment’s relationship with Queer Life into five main “Rituals.” Each functioned as a lens with which to view design proposals. The next step in this process was to assist the Cleveland LGBTQ community. I was able to propose a new urban typology that utilized the Queer Rituals identified earlier and the synthesis of a working research document I had edited throughout the process. Conceptual imagery ended up being the best way to represent the project’s abstract theme and tone.
