NEW YEARS EVE 2007: THE DRAKE INN, CANMORE, ALBERTA
MOURNING WOOD
THE BAND: SECOND TIME AROUND [a.k.a. THE SECOND COMING] This was the second year in a row my friends and I decided to celebrate New Year’s Eve with Mourning Wood. As you can tell, the sheer amount of bad taste puns to be had are irresistable. Mourning Wood had just welcomed a brand new band member, drummer, Jeff Gordon. To ring in 2008, they decided to break him in where the mountains are high, the powder is deep, and a liquor store (literally) on every block.
The Drake Inn, located in Canmore, Alberta, is a much smaller, darker venue than the Atha-B in Jasper. Unlike the previous year, the pictures were really a result of minimal lighting, awkward corners, extreme perspectives, and tight focal ranges. I shot 3 rolls of Ilford black & white 3600 at 1600, which pulled out much heavier contrasts than the previous year due to very dim stage lights.
Although this meant less details than the Jasper photographs, the angles that came out of these rolls really pleased me. Once again, my shots heavily favored Dan Blais, the bassist, since he’s the one guy on the band I actually know. As always, I find it much easier to take interesting photographs of people I know versus strangers. His resulting photos will probably be the basis for future painting projects to come.
