Leadership is the Key As John Frederick mentions in his article The Right Tools for Success! (page 08), you are the most important reason for prospects to join Immunotec – and truer words were never spoken, or in this case written. The good news is that leaders are made, and not born.

Let’s take a minute to consider what makes a good leader. Basically, a good leader inspires others to want to achieve higher goals. A leader is enthusiastic, committed and most importantly, has a vision. To be a good leader means that your vision is so clearly articulated, that it is shared by every member of your team. One organization. One vision. Once your vision has been clearly defined, it sets the pathway to your success. Without a vision, you’re really just spinning your wheels. As a leader in your organization, you will benefit from defining your vision in the following ways: You will identify a sense of direction and purpose Sometimes it’s easier to look at the desired end result and work your way backwards. Knowing where you want to go, helps you see the path (or steps) that will get you there.

You will encourage interest and commitment In essence, there are more followers than leaders in the world. Standing out with a clear plan that is in sync with the beliefs of others is a natural breeding ground for sustained growth. You will instill the necessary confidence Confidence is a major factor in any relationship. And with the number of fly-by-nights out there, proving your merit is crucial. You will build loyalty through involvement Anything worthwhile takes time. When others are involved, they’ve put some of “themselves” into the equation and this secures the constancy necessary for building any business. Okay, so you’re reading this and thinking, “I’m enthusiastic, committed and I have a vision. Does this make me a leader?”

You’re almost there. What does Leadership mean to you? Ever since I joined Immunotec, three and a half years ago, I’ve been reading a lot and I’ve followed many seminars in order to be a good leader. I’ve found that the main quality is right in our heart. You have to love helping people, support them, and show them the right path to follow without falling in the many traps, show them the team work, teach them how to always be very generous with everybody and aim to be the best person that they can be. But, most of all, being a leader is having your people believe that you can help them achieve their dreams when they don’t have the faintest idea how they can do it! If you can get people to believe in you, nothing is IMPOSSIBLE! I’m a big fan of Jim Rohn and I tell my people ‘Let’s go and do it’ and not ‘Go and do it’. All my people know that they can rely on me at any time. I’m constantly telling them, ‘Call me, I’ll be there!’ – Normand Robert

The recruiting component is a given – the reason direct selling exists and is such a successful business model is that people fall in love with the product and the opportunity and share it with others. Unlike the retail world, in this business you actually invite people to join your team because of the potential of the direct selling business model (residual income). Why not create a system where you are duplicating what you do in other people? The power of this business is exponential growth that kicks in when duplication starts. It’s that easy, think about it – they say that the average person runs into about 250 people in a given week (7 day period). By sharing your commercial or testimonial with those in your “250 circle”, chances are 20 people will choose to become part of your team (if you ask them) – and many others will become customers. Are you exposing yourself to the potential of the people that are around you every day (warm market)? Imagine, 20 people doing the same thing you are – talking to their 250 people (circle of influence). In this you are now executing the real power of direct selling – DUPLICATION! What Works

A medical perspective on how to FITT into a smaller size Jimmy Gutman, MD

What a poor track record the medical profession has in controlling obesity. We try to encourage our patients to reach their optimal weight, we obsessively measure glucose and cholesterol, we send people to dieticians and nutritionists, but the numbers don’t lie – two-thirds of Americans are overweight, diabetes has reached epidemic proportions and the best selling drugs are cholesterol-lowering agents.

W

With our ever-advancing knowledge and technology, why have we had little effect in battling the bulge? It’s easy to point out what hasn’t worked. Science dictates that our world must follow basic laws – the law of gravity, the laws of motion – in obesity we talk about the laws of thermodynamics. Adapted to weight control, the law simply states that your mass is a function of the amount of calories you eat minus the amount that you burn off. Conventional medical wisdom directs you to either eat less or exercise more and this will solve the issue. The problem is that medicine is not just science, it is art and science combined. The classic advice given by most docs on diet and exercise just doesn’t cut it in the real world for the majority of patients. What about drugs? Historically, the prescriptions we have written for the past 50 years have not been able to keep weight off for the long term. There have been short-term successes, but there has also been several disasters, leading to addiction, cardiovascular disease and even death. Natural products? Again, they may work for some individuals but usually over a large population sample they are mostly ineffective. What about the Atkin’s diet? The South Beach diet? The grapefruit diet? I can list at least 20 more. Some people have had great success with any one of these, but no single diet works

for all individuals all the time, and most of them are short-term fixes that don’t translate into long-term weight-loss. Why? We all are a function of two major forces: our environment and our genetics. To a certain degree we can control our environment (what we choose to eat, what we choose to do) but unless you have chosen the right parents, you may be stuck with an unfortunate mix of genes that push you towards the heavy end of the scale. Some genes demand more protein, some genes demand more exercise, some genes don’t deal well with stress. We’re all quite unique! Here’s the key – Like any other puzzle, the weight-loss puzzle is made up of many pieces. Unless you have all the pieces, the puzzle won’t be solved. We need to address proper nutrition, calorie control, energy provision, amino acid supply, optimal vitamins, minerals and trace elements, stress control, adequate sleep, sense of well-being, and of course lifestyle changes. Sounds like a giant task? Certainly not as simple as taking that magic pill you saw yesterday on late-night TV. The good news is it can be done! Check out how to “fitt” the pieces together. There are a lot of statistics out there concerning the general public’s health status, specifically surrounding obesity. Not surprisingly, being overweight has a huge impact on our overall health. Apart from the psychological consequences that affect self-esteem, there is the risk for premature death as a result of diseases associated with obesity such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, respiratory problems and some cancers – to list but a few. In 2007, an estimated 25.6 percent of U.S. adults were reported obese. Compare this to the 23.9 percent in 2005 (an increase of 1.7 percent) and it’s safe to say that despite all the information floating around out there on the importance of maintaining a healthy weight, we’re not paying attention. We know that a healthy weight is important. We also know that everyone – no really, EVERYONE! – wants the best possible quality of life. A healthy weight enables us to look great, yes. Feel great, bigger yes. Be healthy, biggest yes of all! And despite this, the rate of overweight and obese people has grown to epidemic proportions. Okay. Now that we got the nitty, gritty, not-so-nice out of the way, let’s focus on the why’s and how’s. Why is it so hard to maintain a healthy weight? Well for one thing we’ve developed this really bad eating habit that includes a lot of processed and convenience foods. And it’s no wonder. With our busy schedules do we really have time to plan and prepare meals the “good old fashioned way”? The answer: not as often as we should. So we’ve learned to resort to quick fixes for filling up. While it’s true that overeating is the main cause of obesity, stress is the biggest contributor for our overeating. It has been proven that during stressful periods we eat for comfort. Case in Point Independent Distributor: who am I?

Welcome to the first article of Case In Point. And for those new to Immunotec, welcome to our company. As an Immunotec Distributor, you enjoy the status of an independent contractor.

Many of you have asked what the difference is between being an independent contractor and an employee of Immunotec. The difference is important especially in terms of tax reporting and social benefits. In determining whether the person providing services is an employee or an independent contractor we must look at the degree of control and the independence in relation to the company. By definition, an employee is someone who is under the control and supervision of an employer. Does the employer control the hours worked, the work to be done and how the work is to be done? Additionally, are the business aspects of the person’s “job” controlled by the employer such as how the person is paid, whether expenses are reimbursed, who provides the tools and/or supplies with which to execute the work? Thirdly, are there employee type benefits such as pension plan, insurance, and vacation pay?

If the answer to all of these is clearly “no” then one can safely say that he or she is an independent contractor. He or she is then responsible for reporting his or her income to the taxation authorities and for procuring the types of social benefits that an employer would otherwise have. If you are residing in the U.S., Immunotec will issue to you a 1099 form to show the revenue you earned (not employment income). Similarly, if you are a Canadian resident, Immunotec will issue a T4-A and for a Quebec resident, a Relevé 1. Although you are not employed by a company, you are representing the company’s products. The company has a Business Guide with which you, as independent Distributors, undertake to comply. As well, given that the company is a member of the Direct Selling Association (DSA) in both Canada and in the U.S., all of our independent Distributors must also comply with the DSA Code of Ethics. In our next issue of Focus, we will talk about the DSA Code of Ethics.

Andrew Brash is a junior high teacher living in Calgary, Alberta. But he’s no ordinary Canadian. He has a passion that takes him to great heights. In fact, you can say that his passion is great heights. He’s a mountain climber. The year was 2006. It seemed the whole world was on Andrew Brash. He was at more than 90% of his way to the top of Mount Everest – his second attempt – when he came across Lincoln Hall, a man who had been taken for dead by other climbers. Not only did Andrew abandon his mission to get to the top, he risked his own life to save that of another; a true heroic act.

This step can be done either in person or over the phone. It is your initial contact with your prospect and the goal is to generate interest so that they want to take a look at the CD/DVD.

Tailor

This important step requires that you make the business opportunity relevant to the individual. In turn, this will motivate them to look at the tool. Depending on the prospect and on their personal priorities, you could talk to them about how your business has enabled you to spend more time with family, how it helped you leave a job you didn’t enjoy, or how it has created an extra stream of income.

Hand-off

Successful Distributors have found that establishing a sense of urgency during the hand-off step is crucial. No one wants to feel that an opportunity is passing them by. To create this sense of urgency, let them know that you will be calling them soon – within 48 hours is ideal.

Follow through

As in the approach (step 1), the follow through can be done either in person or over the phone. We suggest a short and simple conversation where you ask for their feedback on the CD/DVD.

Here’s another tip At this point you can suggest meeting them with one of your “business partners” to answer any questions they may have. Well we did it. We undertook the huge (as in HUGE!!!) task of looking at the website, analyzing its pros and cons, and re-creating it. Sounds like an easy three step process but it was actually a lot of work – and still is as it will always be a work in progress in our fast paced industry.

All the care, attention to detail, and involvement remind us of preparing a good-old-fashioned, home-cooked meal.
