RANDY DAVISON PHOTOGRAPHY A collection of landscape and wildlife photography
This photo and the one on the cover were both taken at Mills Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. Both of these are HDR images using the default setting in Photomatix Pro 5 for a realistic photographic look. I shot these with a Canon 7D Mark II and a 10-22mm lens set to 10mm (equivalent to a 16-35mm full frame lens set to 16mm). The camera was set on a tripod and I incorporated the 2-second timer for a clean steady shot. A neutral density filter was used to blur the water and create a smooth desirable result.
WATERFALLS AT RMNP Alberta Falls on the left is on the trail to Mills Lake. Ouzel Falls (center) and Chasm Falls are just a couple more of the many waterfalls that dot the park.
Even before entering the park you’ll want to keep an eye out for wildlife. Elk are home wherever they choose. And they always have the right-of-way.
The Rut
The Rut is an annual event that takes place in early fall. The adult male elk will lock horns and fight for mating rights. In the top two photographs we witnessed a bull elk defeat 5 challengers in a row. Each “loser took the walk of shame up the adjoining path and on out of sight. This was the most fascinating sight I have witness in nature. The bottom photo were two youngsters practicing earlier in the year.
Marmots These guys are part of the squirrel family and only live in mountainous areas . They tend to be very active and elusive so its always a treat to catch one that engages you.
Poudre Lake at Milner Pass (left) is at the continental divide. Water on the east of the divide eventually makes It to the Atlantic. Water from the west the Pacific.
Mills Lake (right) is beautiful in either color or black and white.
