We need your help to continue... your support is vital to our ability to provide world-class healthcare to you and everyone in our community. Together we continue to strive to maintain that state of excellence for you. Just last year, Bethesda provided nearly $50 million in indigent care, helping care for community members regardless of their ability to pay. Also in the last year, the hospital helped bring nearly 3,000 babies into the world; cared for a record 60,000 patients in our Emergency Room and performed 9,100 surgical cases.

Patients at Bethesda’s Orthopaedic Institute benefit from a new micro-invasive procedure thanks to a Bethesda doctor – one of only five surgeons in the world, and the only one in Florida, to routinely perform this tissue-preserving procedure . . . here’s one grateful patient’s story: The day after the procedure, she was walking and practicing on the steps in the Orthopaedic Institute’s rehabilitation gym. One the second day, she was able to go home. “The hospital staff was awesome,” said Angela. “You can really tell everyone takes pride in what they do. I would definitely recommend Bethesda.” Dr. Grandic prescribed outpatient rehabilitation for Angela to help her regain strength and learn how to walk again without pain. Two weeks later, she was back at work, continuing down the road to recovery.

WEST BOYNTON BEACH RESIDENT Angela Caldwell, age 48, had spent two years with severe hip and back pain hindering her from activities she enjoyed – it even hurt to walk and she had resorted to using a cane for assistance in getting around, which was minimal at best. She had seen several specialists in the area with no relief until a coworker recommended orthopaedic surgeon, Elvis Grandic, M.D. After meeting with Dr. Grandic, Angela was finally diagnosed with hip arthritis. This had been the root of her back pain and a hip replacement was recommended earlier this year. “I originally thought it was a spine issue,” Angela recalled, “but doctors confirmed that it was my hip. They said the joint looked like that of a 90-year-old.”

Dr. Grandic told Angela about a new micro-invasive hybrid procedure called the Superior Approach. Heavily involved in the development of the Superior Approach during his Fellowship-training, he is one of only five surgeons in the world, and the only one in Florida, to routinely perform this tissue-preserving procedure. “The biggest advantage is there is no cutting of muscle or tendon, and no dislocation of the hip joint during the procedure,” explains Dr. Grandic. “The prosthesis is assembled inside the body, like a ship in a bottle.” unique benefits of the Superior Approach include the ability of the surgeon to customize the procedure to each patient’s anatomy, select the most appropriate implant and preserve individual muscles. It requires a small incision above the hip, and eliminates the need to twist the hip into unnatural positions - a common element in all other hip techniques. This maximizes stability and promotes a rapid recovery. “The moment I met Dr. Grandic something clicked,” Angela said. “It was obvious he cares about his patients and really loves what he does.” After her surgery at the Bethesda Orthopaedic Institute, Angela immediately felt better. “The hip and incision area were tender, but I had immediate relief from the shooting pain I experienced from the bone-on-bone friction before surgery.” About Bethesda

Grateful Patient Angela Caldwell at her six-month follow-up appointment in November with orthopaedic surgeon Elvis Grandic, M.D. “I just had my six-month follow up and I feel great,” said Angela. “To think it hurt to walk before and now I’m dancing. This whole experience gave me my life back.” As a complement to our Cornell Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine and outpatient rehabilitation programs, the Bethesda Orthopaedic Institute celebrated its first anniversary this past July. This 24-bed, all private room unit is located on the 4th floor of the hospital and provides a state-of-the-art facility for patients requiring back, hip, knee, hand, shoulder, foot or ankle surgery. Enhanced with a state-of-the-art rehabilitation gym and separate dining room, the Orthopaedic Institute is designed to help patients get back to living full and productive lives.

ANOTHER SUCCESS IN OUR NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED HEART HOSPITAL The muscles of his heart were weak and the surgical risk was higher than normal, says Dr. Carmichael. Bruce was scheduled for surgery immediately. Bruce says, “We knew we were in good hands and in the right place, but it was difficult for my wife, Betty, while I was in surgery. Dr. Carmichael and his entire team prayed with us and were such a comfort to both of us.” Dr. Carmichael recalls of the triple bypass surgery: on the operating table, we measured Bruce’s EF and were able to make a dramatic improvement increasing the EF from 25 to 45 percent. Then we did a maze heart surgery, a complex procedure to treat the atrial fibrillation. By creating multiple cuts into the upper part of Bruce’s atria in a maze-like pattern, we stitched together incisions to produce scars that would interfere with any stray electrical impulses that cause atrial fibrillation. In the midst of the surgery, Dr. Carmichael unexpectedly found an aneurism of an ascending aorta, which he repaired and then installed an epicardial pacemaker to resynchronize his heartbeat. Dr. Carmichael says that in most operating rooms a surgery of this type would take 6-8 hours, but because of Bethesda’s dedicated and skilled team, they completed Bruce’s surgery in only two hours. Bruce now has an improved quality and longevity of life. Bruce says looking back, “It was a piece of cake. The medical team was excellent and the staff was so caring during the few days I was in the hospital. It’s been more than a year after my surgery at Bethesda and I still feel wonderful. I’m like a new man.”

A COUPLE OF YEARS ago, Naples resident Bruce Folkerth, then age 71, suffered a stroke while vacationing on a Naples, FL resident and grateful patient Bruce private island off Folkerth with his wife Betty the west coast of Florida. Taken to the closest mainland hospital, he was treated and recovered there for 10 days. It was recommended that he see a cardiologist. Bruce’s prior heart history included a heart attack in 1977, which led to a single bypass surgery and a “redo” of that bypass seven years later. His cardiologist told him he needed to have another heart surgery. Bruce explored his options to find the right surgeon who could handle the severity of his case. Having met Bethesda Thoracic/Cardiovascular Surgeon Michael Carmichael, M.D., in a social setting, Bruce got in touch with Dr. Carmichael for an evaluation. Dr. Carmichael remembers: Bruce’s heart was quite weak. His ejection fraction (EF) calculation – how much blood is ejected out of the left ventricle, divided by the maximum volume remaining there when the heart is filling back up with blood between muscle contractions – was a dangerously low 25 percent compared to a normal EF of 55 percent. Bruce was experiencing atrial fibrillation, meaning his heart was beating irregularly, due to the low EF. He had an increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest and sudden cardiac death.

BETHESDA UNVEILS ITS NEWEST CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOR MINIMALLY INVASIVE ROBOTIC SURGERY TECHNOLOGY IS TRANSFORMING THE WORLD’S MEDICAL CARE and Bethesda is dedicated to providing the highest level of healthcare by utilizing state-of-the-art procedures and equipment. Our commitment to the latest and greatest technology saves cost and ultimately lives. By combining computer-enhanced technology with our surgeon’s skill, a robotic system enables surgeons to perform precise, minimally invasive surgery in a manner never before experienced to enhance healing and promote well-being. Bethesda is integrating this technology into urologic, gynecologic, cardiothoracic and general surgery procedures performed with the da Vinci Surgical System. Earlier this year, Bethesda unveiled the Center for Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery and a new virtual-reality simulator – the first in Florida – to help surgeons at Bethesda to expand their surgical capabilities utilizing the da Vinci Si Surgical System, a state-of-the-art platform for minimally invasive surgery. The da Vinci Skills Simulator looks and feels like the real thing, but instead of using physical instruments, surgeons can explore the virtues of robotic surgery with virtual surgical needles and objects. The device contains a variety of exercises designed to give surgeons the opportunity to improve their proficiency with the da Vinci robotics system. Simulation in all forms is becoming an important part of the learning experience for surgical technology. By providing a controlled re-creation of critical steps in instrument control, simulation allows surgeons to practice their skills in a non-clinical environment that once required expensive models or cadavers for learning. The da Vinci Skills Simulator provides surgeons with objective feedback on their performance when they complete an exercise. Over time, surgeons can track their progress on the device and work to improve their skills before they use it on patients. “Having the da Vinci system offers so many opportunities for our physicians to provide the highest quality of care in minimally invasive surgery for their patients,” said Roger Kirk, Executive Vice President/COO of Bethesda Memorial Hospital. “Plus, as our medical residency program continues to grow, the new simulator will strengthen the skills of our upcoming surgeons preparing them with realtime, hands-on experiences,” Kirk added. The Bethesda Hospital Foundation’s Caring for Our Community Campaign includes a goal of $2.5 million to support this technology for the Bethesda community. Contact the Foundation to learn more about how you can be involved in supporting the Hospital’s Centers of Excellence including the Center for Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery.

Hailed by The New Davis Gaines York Times as “the closest thing to a vocal Superman” and acclaimed by The New York Post as “a breathtaking concert artist,” Gaines will perform alongside Teri Bibb, who played Christine opposite Gaines on Broadway. Their Bethesda Ball song list will include: The Phantom of the Opera, Think of Me, All I Ask of You, The Music of the Night and Til I Hear You Sing, a solo from Love Never Dies” the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. You won’t want to miss this performance! The Atlanta Journal-Constitution raves that Davis Gaines has the best male voice Broadway has heard in decades and The L.A. PASSING ON PHILANTHROPY TO THE NEXT GENERATION

The 2011 Blum Scholarship candidates at a luncheon in their honor.

TWELVE STUDENTS WERE SELECTED as the recipients of the 2011 Blum Family Scholarship at Bethesda Memorial Hospital this summer thanks to the generosity of Bethesda Hospital Foundation Vice Chairman and philanthropist Peter Blum, former Foundation Chairman Dan Burns and his wife, Michele, of Linton Shell Gas Stations and the Hospital. Each of the students, all children of Bethesda Healthcare System employees, receive $5,000 toward a four-year college degree. In its 12th year, the program has grown each year and this year Mr. Blum also awarded the remaining 16 candidates with a $500 scholarship for their academic and community achievements. “Our scholarship program is a wonderful way for us to say thank you to the many dedicated employees of this great hospital who provide exceptional care to our community,” says Mr. Blum. “We are honored to help these outstanding students reach their potential,” he added.

All of the scholarship candidates and their parents were invited to a luncheon with guest of honor Mr. Blum. De-Vaughn Williams, a past Blum Scholarship recipient who is studying Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, spoke at the luncheon. He said publicly to 2010 Blum Scholarship Mr. Blum, “I greatly appreciate recipient De-Vaughn Williams what you are doing for the and Peter Blum employees of Bethesda especially during these times of economic challenges. I now want to give back to the community and make someone’s dreams of education a reality. I have great aspirations and have faith that I will one day become a successful man who will follow in your footsteps, becoming a philanthropist and giving back to the community.”

MAKE A GIFT TO BETHESDA AND RECEIVE INCOME FOR LIFE ACT NOW BEFORE LOWER RATES GO INTO EFFECT JANUARY 1, 2012! PLEASE CONSIDER A CHARITABLE GIFT ANNuITY as a way to support Bethesda Hospital Foundation and provide yourself with guaranteed income for life. Bethesda Hospital Foundation is a charitable organization licensed by the State of Florida to offer a Gift Annuity program. In the Gift Annuity method of donating, you make an upfront donation and we make a contract with you to pay you income for life at a fixed rate of return. The minimum Gift Annuity is $10,000. When you pass away the remainder goes to Bethesda’s charitable purposes. There are many advantages to the Annuity: 1. If your stocks are not providing income at a consistent level, you can transfer them to Bethesda Hospital Foundation and get the secure feeling of fixed lifetime income. 2. Your Gift Annuity donation is put into Bethesda’s pool of other Gift Annuities that has a special back-up reserve required by the State of Florida to guarantee the cash payments for your lifetime. 3. Your Gift Annuity donation qualifies you to take a tax deduction on the gift. The deduction is usually about half or less of the upfront gift because it subtracts the value of the funds you’re likely to get back in Annuity payments. 4. The older you are the more beneficial, as your age determines your rate of guaranteed fixed return. If you’re within six months of your next birthday you may qualify for that rate. 5. Your Gift Annuity income payments do not depend on whether the market goes up or down, but are a fixed rate. 6. Your annual Annuity payment is mostly tax-free but partially taxable depending on your age. (Once you outlive your actuarial life expectancy, the entire payment is taxable, however.) 7. Recognition in one of the VIP donor levels is offered depending on the tax-deductible value of the annuity:

EXAMPLE Katherine is an 83-year-old widow who is concerned about the economy and the way her stocks have gone down. She would like to make a donation to Bethesda because she is grateful for having a world-class hospital so close to her Florida residence, but she does not feel comfortable with an outright donation because she still needs income to live on. Katherine transfers $10,000 in stocks to the Bethesda Foundation. The Gift Annuity Agreement she signs with the Bethesda Foundation provides her with: • A contractually guaranteed rate of return of 8.0% on the $10,000. •Income for life of $800 a year paid out at $200.00 a quarter. (Of that amount, 78% would be tax-free and 22% ordinary income for 7.8 years.) • An estimated charitable tax deduction of $5,110 – about one-half the upfront donation. In addition, at the $10,000 amount, Katherine is recognized at the Benefactors Pavilion Society donor level for one year.

Act now before the end of 2011 Direct your IRA distribution to charities like Bethesda as a donation and avoid having to pay Income Tax on it. This option expires December 31, 2011. Did you know if you are 70 1/2 and older with an IRA you can donate up to $100,000 from your IRA and have it count as your required distribution under a temporary law that's set to expire at the end of the year? There are two other benefits as well, you avoid having that IRA distribution count toward your taxable income, and you can support your favorite charities like Bethesda Hospital.

Call your IRA company to ask for details on how to make a "Qualified Charitable Distribution" to a “Qualified Charitable Organization.” Remember to ask to have the distribution made out directly to the name of the charity, for example, “Bethesda Hospital Foundation, Inc.” unfortunately, while these IRA Charity Rollovers make great outright donations, you can't use them to establish a Gift Annuity or a donor advised fund.
