Mountain Athletic Conference

BOYS — arity has always been a part of sports. Consider the Mountain Athletic Conference to have a lot of that on the boys side of hoops play for this season. While one club is a traditional powerhouse, six others are hoping to spoil the party and capture the MAC title themselves. Among the teams that seem to be a big threat to take down the defending champs is North Buncombe (17-7). The Blackhawks earned the number one playoff seed from the 3A side of the MAC a season ago. Don’t be alarmed — McDowell (22-2), who are the defending champs, has the potential to repeat. McDowell’s basketball heritage is no secret to the state of North Carolina. Although the Titans lost 6 of their first 8 players that saw the most time on the floor a season ago, a key player is back and a fantastic junior varsity group moves up to try their hand at the varsity level. Enka (18-10) lost their top player and all-around leader, Corey Hensley,

P

to graduation in the off-season. Still, Enka won six of their last seven games before entering the playoffs a season ago, and 12 kids are back this year. While their big time post man is gone, the Jets shouldn’t be taken lightly. For Asheville (8-14), six kids come back as the Cougars try to push for a winning season. At this level, Asheville has some experience, but their quickness and athleticism will make them a much tougher opponent to figure out. In perspective, A.C. Reynolds (4-17) should be a better club this season. Six kids overall, four of those starters, return from last year’s team. If the Rockets can close out games and believe in themselves, they could be a problematic competitor for later in the year. Just three return this season for T.C. Roberson, but two of those started last season. Although there is a great amount of uncertainty and inexperience this season, the Rams do have a variety of depth that could play a huge factor in their results. Despite being toward the bottom

of the league a season ago, Erwin does have most of its players back from what was an inexperienced club to begin with last year. With a number of their players coming from an outstanding football team, there is no question that the Warriors will be athletic. GIRLS— year ago, the conference crown came down to two teams, while it could be a much more chaotic and tight race this season, two teams certainly stand out. This time though, it’s not exactly the same two clubs which earned the talk of last year. Erwin (21-7), who finished in the top half of the conference a year ago, is predicted to be on of the strongest clubs in the MAC this season. The Lady Warriors, who blasted all the way to the 3A regional semifinals have four seniors and a talented group that could wage into the double digits as far as depth is concerned. However, a number of people believe the usual suspects and the defending league champs at McDowell (27-2) won’t be a pushover.

A

McDowell returns eight ladies back from a team who went to the elite eight in 4A last season. But injuries have slightly set back the expectations of the Lady Titans in the early season. Don’t bet against McDowell come later in the year when they hope to be healthy. While there was a consensus pick for Erwin to win the conference this season, not everybody was completely in sync with that. “Until somebody beats McDowell, the defending conference champs, that is the team I believe you have to look at,” said one coach in the conference. There is no doubt Asheville (11-13) is a very athletic bunch, who has the potential to make a little noise with a ERWIN WARRIORS group that is a year older. Making things worse for other teams, the “32 minutes of hell defense” the Cougars inflict is back again this season. T. C. Roberson (11-14) returns the most prolific player in the conference, which will play ball at the collegiate level next year. With 10 upperclassmen this season and experience on the Lady Rams’ side, a huge danger lurks for those

who take them lightly. A. C. Reynolds (19-4) captured a share of the MAC regular season title a year ago, but this isn’t the same team as last year. A crazy off-season puts a new coach in charge and a fairly young team on the court for the Lady Rockets. Nothing is certain about North Buncombe (17-8) besides the fact that they will play extremely hard for 32 minutes. The Lady Blackhawks return five, but the varsity inexperience of the rest could make for an interesting club in Weaverville. Enka went 4-20 a year ago, but a year of growing up and a solid post player back really could push the Sugar Jets towards the middle of the pack in MAC. No matter how the season goes, six of the seven teams in conference went to the post season a year ago, and it will be no surprise to repeat that number for this post-season. cDowell couldn’t have asked for a better season than last year — until the playoffs hit. McDowell (22-2) then got a terrible draw in the first round of the 4A playoffs a season ago. In that first round match up, the Titans lost to a powerful Lake Norman bunch to end the season much earlier than expected. Unbelievable as it may sound, Lake Norman went on to

win the state title as a three seed. McDowell lost six valuable seniors off last season’s team including Chavis Hamliton, but usually the Titans are able to reload fairly quickly. While five return this season, all seniors, just two saw an enormous amount of minutes. One of those two key players back though is Randall Conley. Normally a kid who plays on the wing, Conley (6’0“) is an outstanding athlete who can attack the rim at any given moment. On the inside, Tre Young knows

how use his body to get in low post Coach Lloyd Church position. Young (6’3”) played a lot last season, and his presence will undoubtedly be a huge advantage for the Titans. Ryan Lambert at wing, Caleb Harris at wing, and Matt Ledford at post round out the five returnees which should produce and provide leadership. The rest of the team consists of a conglomerate of last year’s junior varsity

club that went undefeated. To start that list of players in making the transition is Ethan Freeman. A possible starter at point guard, Freeman WARRIORS hasERWIN a motor that doesn’t stop and has a pretty good shooting stroke in his game. A kid that has Coach Church excited about is middle man, Daniel Jackson. Church stated that Jackson (6’4”) has improved the most of anybody in the past nine months. The biggest surprise so far in practice has been Delante Rodriguez. The

sophomore is tickling the twine pretty well, making him a sharp shooter to watch this season. Adding more size for McDowell is sophomore Jared Helms. A post up man at 6’4”, Helms runs, jumps, and stood in as a solid defender on JV last year. A hustler for the loose ball that comes to the varsity club is Cedarius Avery. Avery, who plays wing, should create turnovers with the “in-your-face defense” that the Titans will likely present this season. Michael Simolke, Matt Carroll, and Tre Biddix are all battling for time off the bench. “We will probably be better at the end of the season than at the start as they gain confidence and experience,” McDowell boys basketball coach Lloyd Church said. “I also believe that we will be a pretty good basketball team. The goals to win the conference outright, the conference tourney, and get to the postseason are still there.” For those who write off McDowell because of their youth, that’s probably not a good idea since the Titans know what it’s like to win on the hardwood. T

he Lady Titans have a rich basketball tradition, and they continued their prideful ways last season. McDowell had virtually everything

go right a year ago, rolling up 21 straight wins to begin the campaign on the way to winning a share of the MAC crown. However, they fell short of a state title, finishing (27-2, 11-1) after a season ending loss to eventual champion, Butler, in the regional semifinals of the 4A playoffs. Though they will miss six graduates, which five started the majority of those games from last year’s team, eight solid players are back this season. “Last year was a special group in battling with the injuries we had in the post-season and to make it so far,” McDowell girls basketball coach Brian

Franklin said. “We have high expectations every year though, and it might take a little time to see it through, but I think we can be a good team.” Of the ladies who return, junior forward Tuccoa Bracket is at the top of the list. Brackett, who comes back following knee surgery, scored the most points of this core group who returns from last season. Alongside the inside with Brackett will once again be the workhorse of Madison Thomas. Thomas, who is a senior, does an extraordinary job around the basket and already has a couple of colleges offering her scholarships.

Leading at the point will be sophomore Anna Pittman. Despite having a senior point guard in Mary Webb back on the roster, Pittman takes command with Webb still recovering from a knee injury. The most improved player in Franklin’s mind is junior Taylor Settlemyre. Settlemyre has worked harder this off-season than any player he has seen come through the program in the last few years. Another of the returning juniors is Amber Fulbright. Fulbright could step in and play many different roles this season, but she has elevated her midrange game during the summer. An athletic Madalyn Davis is the last junior who returns this season. Davis may be the quickest Lady Titan on the club and hopes to use her hustle to make key plays when needed.

Senior Brooke Epley returns as a vital leader and rounds out all eight who come back for McDowell basketball. Shelly Riddle is new to the club, but she has worked very hard to spot herself as the backup point guard. Sophomores Jessica Patrick and Nikki Mills will likely see time off the bench. Believing McDowell will falter a lot this season is not likely, and betting against them late in the year is probably not a good idea either. “I know that we have some growing to do, but they have given everything they have in practice, and that is why I believe we will be fine,” Franklin said. espite not making the playoffs last year, a new season sets up what should be a very intriguing basketball season over at Roberson for plenty of reasons. No seniors are on this club, and only three overall returners are back

this season. While they are a young team, Roberson’s boys basketball coach Kevin Keen was upbeat about this group of kids. “We are inexperienced, but I am excited about the potential to grow and improve as the season progresses,” Keen said. The Rams are made up of eight juniors and three sophomores, but luckily two of the returnees started last season.

Of the returning starters, Tim McKeithan is an integral piece to the success of the Rams campaign this season. A junior, McKeithan, who plays shooting guard, can also punch up some numbers on the scoreboard, returning as the team‘s top sharp shooter. His counterpart who returns to the lineup is junior Dillon O’Kelley. At forward, O’Kelley (6’4”) is a wellrounded basketball player who will be relied on again this season. What is worse for opponents is that O’Kelley not only has an inside game, but an outside game as well. The last of the returners is Tucker Matthews. Playing a guard spot, Matthews does have some experience from a year ago and should be able to chip in a little more, since he understands Roberson’s identity. A player that Coach Keen is very ecstatic about is James Nevant. As an inside presence in the post, expect Nevant to be an explosive force this season. From the junior varsity club, three could potentially make much needed

splash in the Rams effort this season. Chance Buley and Chris Norman induces more depth in the paint as forwards, and junior Rod Brown might be able to assist a youthful offense. With a lack of varsity game minutes for most of the team, Coach Keen’s position on the subject is a fascinating stance. “It could be a strength or a weakness with the level of varsity inexperience we have on the team, but to balance the fact, I like our general depth,” Keen said. “The only thing we can do is try to be the best team we can be and compete as best we can.” Written by Kevin Carver
