Yes, our Christmas Holiday edition is back and many thanks to Roger and Chris Wooley for hosting the OMS Holiday Celebration ‘21 at their beautiful home. More details next issue!

Thanks again to Jet Motors, Mini Mania, MINI of Portland, 7 Mini Parts, Kings Cross Automotive & Hagerty. They make OMS Society Pages happen throughout the year!

Our January-February issue will reintroduce Boris, our club’s classic Mini restoration project, the Christmas Holiday Party, Southern Oregon Adventure, Winter Wonderland Tour, and the epic Mini vs. Mustang battle that yours truly raced in at the Velocity Invitational at Laguna Seca. Hello Mini Fans,

It’s that time of the year to reflect on our successes while looking at what we can improve moving into 2022.

I’ve been a documentary storyteller for as long as I’ve been a Mini Fanatic. At a very young age, my father allowed me to use his 8mm film camera, and around this same time, back in the seventies, my father purchased a Mini 850 as he was seeking a more costeffective way to commute to work. I remember waiting excitedly for my dad to come home so that I could capture his arrival. Afterwards, I would beg him to drive the Mini around the block. After weeks of incessant begging, my dad caved and allowed me to personally commandeer this little car around our neighborhood. I was hooked!

Years later, I found a 1967 Austin 850 at the 1988 All British Field Meet and convinced my family that this little Old English White Mini would be a perfect vehicle to get me to school and back while studying Photography & Television Production.

They approved. Over the years, I’ve worked hard to connect the dots with automotive and filmmaking. Using what I learned from school, I filmed a series of documentary videos for mail-order VHS sales at the 1995 Mini Meet West at the Mountain, 1996 MMW in Long Beach, and 1997 MMW in Vallejo, California. (Stay tuned. I need to dig into my archives and share these videos on YouTube soon)

Since 2000 I’ve covered events for National Automotive Car Expert Nik Miles and produced a series of videos to get the JET Motors YouTube channel off the ground. Meeting and interviewing Paddy Hopkirk is one of my highlights. That meeting would have never happened if it was not for Norm Nelson, leader of Shasta Minis, who was integral to that connection.

Today I’m happy to call Norm and Paddy my Friend. I’ve discovered that Paddy has an immense love of the British car industry. Even in his retirement, he works hard to make sure the world knows about how much fun you can have in a MINI Cooper.

My latest endeavor when not at Hybrid Moon launching brand potential for the most innovative companies in the universe, is to help tell the stories of the Mini community via my latest partnership with Miniology.com.

Miniology started in 2003 to deliver news and information about the Mini/ MINI, explicitly geared towards clubs, their events, and the people, created for and by enthusiasts. Miniology, a non-profit and charitable organization, consists of dedicated volunteers who collaborate on websites, blogs, podcasts, social media, or other content.

Please take a moment, visit and Subscribe to Miniology on Facebook and YouTube for the latest Mini Cooper News, Live Streams, Podcasts, and Magazine. Heather and I had a great time this year at the 2021 Velocity Invitational held in Laguna Seca. We were joined by OMS members Randy & Julia Unsbee, Wryan & Mallory Van Ripper, Jeremy & Deb Thorpe. It was a thrill to see one of our own, Randy Unsbee tearing up the track during the Minis vs. Mustangs races that were held on Friday and Sunday.

Next month’s issue will feature his article about Minis vs. Mustang, a modern-day story of David and Goliath.

In the meantime, head over to Miniology.com to see driver interviews and complete event coverage.

We all look forward to what 2022 has in store for us. See you at an OMS event soon!

Cheers,

Eric Newland Oregon Mini Society El Presidente
