Project Open-Source! Rania Meng 2009 Spring
I started by writing about the subject I’m interested in, trying to find relevant real-life applications for the concept.
I found that in most applications, the “apple doesn’t fall far from the tree“, which lead me to the conclusion that I should root my project in softwarerelated fields.
After deciding on my thesis and approach, it’s time to pin-down my target audience.
I gathered information by sending online surveys out to people and spreading it via friends.
I then summarized my results and analyzed them for common traits and usage habits.
The processes that followed are both right-brain (brain storming different ideas for the information) and leftbrain (listing, sorting, and gathering information).
I want to focus of the “right fit“, which is finding something that works for my audience, instead of having the users adapting to the software. Therefore for complicated things like Linux, I try to find the pros and cons. The hierarchy of easy to difficult in terms of user-friendliness is also important information for this project.
Since I love food, and it is something relatable to people, the cookbook idea is what I decided to choose.
Since indexing content is important, I started sketching icons for indication of language, license, and compatibility.
For colors, I took colors from dishes all over the world in search of something appetizing. I gathered them after counting how many sections will be in the book, then made my palette. The icons took a few tries and I usually went with the most straight-forward choice.

The design, by now, is relatively finalized. I went through only a size change because of cropping issues.

Unable to sleep one night, I came up with the perfect solution to my flowchar problem. They were originally planned inserts in the book, but given their sheer size (and thus thickness) I decided that they would be better as bus-shelter posters used to promote the book.

I tested different line lengths and widths, with different hierarchy of questions. When everything is done, I added gradients and drop-shadows, however, I found that it is more of a distraction than an addition, so for the final print, I’m going with matte colors, which also matches the book.

A Summary: If I could do the project over, I probably wouldn’t change a thing except for the way I decided to print the book. I would have tried different settings and different ink-jet printers for a faster speed, so I wouldn’t be spending a whole week on printing alone. Otherwise, I am very happy with the way the project turned out, I hope you enjoyed my adventure as well!
