VIVA ESPAGNOLA

Passionate, sophisticated and devoted to living the good life, Spain is both a stereotype come to life and a country more diverse than you ever imagined.

An Epic Land

Spain’s diverse landscapes stir the soul. The Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa are as beautiful as any mountain range on the continent, while the snowcapped Sierra Nevada rises up improbably from the sun-baked plains of Andalucía; these are hiking destinations of the highest order. The wildly beautiful cliffs of Spain’s Atlantic northwest are offset by the charming coves of the Mediterranean. And everywhere you go, villages of timeless beauty perch on hilltops, huddle in valleys and cling to coastal outcrops as tiny but resilient outposts of Old Spain. That’s where the country’s charms are most likely to take hold.

A Culinary Feast

Food and wine are national obsessions in Spain, and with good reason. The touchstones of Spanish cooking are deceptively simple: incalculable variety, traditional recipes handed down through the generations, and an innate willingness to experiment and see what comes out of the kitchen laboratory. You may experience the best meal ever via tapas in an earthy bar where everyone’s shouting, or via a meal prepared by a celebrity chef in the refined surrounds of a Michelin-starred restaurant. Either way, the breadth of gastronomic experience that awaits you is breathtaking and sure to be a highlight of your trip.

Art Imitates Life

Windswept Roman ruins, cathedrals of rare power and incomparable jewels of Islamic architecture speak of a country where the great civilisations of history have risen, fallen and left behind their indelible mark. More recently, what other country could produce such rebellious and relentlessly creative spirits as Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso and Antoni Gaudí and place them front and centre in public life? And here, grand monuments of history coexist alongside architectural creations of such daring that it becomes clear Spain’s future will be every bit as ws original as its past.

Fiestas & Flamenco

For all the talk of Spain’s history, this is a country that lives very much in the present and there’s a reason ‘fiesta’ is one of the bestknown words in the Spanish language – life itself is a fiesta here and everyone seems to be invited. Perhaps you’ll sense it along a crowded, post-midnight street when all the world has come out to play. Or maybe that moment will come when a flamenco performer touches something deep in your soul. Whenever it happens, you’ll find yourself nodding in recognition: this is Spain.

BARCELONA

Barcelona is an enchanting seaside city with boundless culture, fabled architecture and a world-class drinking and dining scene.

Architecture of the Ages

Barcelona’s architectural treasures span 2000plus years. Towering temple columns, ancient city walls and subterranean stone corridors provide a window into Roman-era Barcino. Fast forward a thousand years or so to the Middle Ages by taking a stroll through the shadowy lanes of the Gothic quarter, past tranquil plazas and soaring 14th-century cathedrals. In other parts of town bloom the sculptural masterpieces of Modernisme, a mix of ingenious and whimsical creations by Gaudí and his Catalan architectural contemporaries. Barcelona has also long inspired artists, including Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, both of whom have major Barcelona museums devoted to their works.

A Moveable Feast

The masters of molecular gastronomy – Albert Adrià, Carles Abellan et al – are part of the long and celebrated tradition of Catalan cooking. Simple, flavourful ingredients – seafood, jamón (cured ham), market-fresh produce – are transformed into remarkable delicacies and then served in captivating settings. Feast on hearty, rich paella at an outdoor table overlooking the sea or step back to the 1920s at an elegant art nouveau dining room. Barcelona’s wide-ranging palate adds further complexity: Basque-style tapas bars, Galician seafood taverns, avant-garde Japanese restaurants and sinful chocolate shops are all essential parts of the culinary landscape.

Twenty-four-hour Party People

The night holds limitless possibilities in Barcelona. Start with sunset drinks on a panoramic terrace or dig your heels in the sand at a rustic beachside chiringuito (temporary snack bar). As darkness falls, live music transforms the city: the rapid-fire rhythms of flamenco, brassy jazz spilling out of basements, and hands-in-the-air indie-rock at vintage concert halls. Towards midnight the bars fill. Take your pick from old-school taverns adorned with 19th-century murals, plush lounges in lamplit medieval chambers or boisterous cava bars. If you’re still standing at 3am, hit the clubs and explore Barcelona’s unabashed wild side.

ODE TO NATURE

PARC GÜELL

Parc Güell which you will also see written Park Güell is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is one of the symbols of Barcelona and wonderful imagination of Gaudí.

Parc Güell was born out of the collaboration between the architect Gaudí and his patron Eusebi Güell. The original idea was to construct a garden city with beautiful houses, caretakers’ lodges, a market, a school and a church. It was planned that the infrastructure would not occupy more space than the green areas. Everything in vegetation, in the animal kingdom, and in minerals carries a more or less vivid contrast in colour. That is why we too must colour, in part or wholly, the various archetectonic parts, of which the colour will perhaps fade but which the passage of time will re-cover with the precious and original gloss provided by age.”Gaudí was inspired by the colours and shapes of nature but he gave them his own twist.

At Parc Güell, pathways undulate like rivers, cast iron palm leaves are built onto gates, and stone columns look like tree bark. Gaudí imagine a sort of spiritual ascension echoing that of the park’s hill, and allowing you to arrive at a chapel built on the highest point of the park.

The park is also full of religious and political symbols held dear by its creators. Catalan lands are represented on the fountains on the principal staircase. One of them is notably emblazoned with the Catalan coat of arms and a snake, symbol of medicine but also of the bronze snake used by Moses leaving Egypt. On another fountain a salamander represents the city of Nimes where Eusebi Güell grew up. The famous animal reclines in its nook of yellow and red, the colours of Catalonia.

SAGRADA FAMILIA

Holy Mission of Gaudi and the most visited monument in Spain and attracts more than three million visitors a year

This impressive Roman Catholic church is the most reviewed tourist attraction in the world on TripAdvisor, with more than 109,000 reviews and counting. It’s also sitting on an impressive 4.5 star rating.

It’s not exactly a hidden gem — it is the most visited monument in Spain and attracts more than three million visitors a year — but it also isn’t first in mind if you were to think of the most popular attraction in the globe. Gaudí saw it as his holy mission and worked on it until he died in 1926. He even contributed his own funds to its grand construction.

It is hoped to be completed in 2026, the centennial of Gaudí’s death.

The design of La Sagrada Família is iconic because when Gaudí took over, he abandoned the old Neo-gothic plan in favour of a design that was more modern.

He hated straight lines and angles because they don’t often appear naturally. Instead, he based his innovative design on the curves and imperfections of nature.

The church’s outlines were inspired by the jagged, multi-peaked holy mountain Montserrat outside Barcelona. Gaudí saw it as his holy mission and worked on it until he died in 1926. He even contributed his own funds to its grand construction.

During his lifetime, Gaudí completed the crypt and the Nativity facade at the side, which have been declared a World Heritage Site.

The surviving models and drawings have made it possible to continue with the building work, which continues to be funded by private donations.

LA BO QUE RIA

It stands within Barcelona Old Town (Ciutat Vella), just off La Rambla boulevard, as a true pleasure for the senses, a major tourist attraction, and a fine observer of the city’s past. Ac cording to history, La Boqueria dates back long before 1217, when locals were already selling meat by the gate of the city. The market has gone through various periods and names ever since, being called sequentially Mercat Bornet, Mercat de la Palla, Placa Nova Market, Placa del Treball, and finally Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria after the Saint Josep monastery nearby. It was officially opened in 1840, but has gone through major restorations to reach its current form. Nowadays, La Boqueria boasts over 200 stalls selling all kinds of fresh food, from various sorts of fish and seafood to fresh-garden fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy, spices, and flowers.

In addition to the wide variety of local products and exotic specialties colorfully displayed on the stands, the market features a series of restaurants, take-away dives, and traditional tapas bars where visitors can sample delicious goods.

An equally important part of the market is the Boqueria Food School, which provides various cooking courses taught by professional, creative chefs.

La Boqueria market is usually open from Monday to Saturday, between 8.00 and 20.30.

SEVILLA

Some cities blast you away, others slowly win you over. Seville disarms and seduces you.

Some cities blast you away, others slowly win you over. Seville disarms and seduces you. Its historic centre, lorded over by a colossal Gothic cathedral, is an intoxicating mix of resplendent Mudéjar palaces, baroque churches and winding medieval lanes. Flamenco clubs keep the intimacy and intensity of this centuries-old tradition alive whilst aristocratic mansions recall the city’s past as a showcase Moorish capital and, later, a 16th-century metropolis rich on the back of New World trade.

But while history reverberates all around, Seville is as much about the here and now as the past. It’s about eating tapas in a crowded bar or seeing out the end of the day over a drink on a buzzing plaza. The sevillanos have long since mastered the art of celebrating and the city’s great annual festivals, notably the Semana Santa and Feria de Abril, are among Spain’s most heartfelt.

FUN FACT

The Plaza de España has been used as a filming location, including scenes for the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia. The building was used as a location in the Star Wars movie series Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)

LA PLAZA DE ESPAGNA

This massive building is Seville’s most impressive for its sheer scale and grandeur. Love it or hate it - fabulous or fussy, magnificent or overblown by

Representative of much of the regional architecture, this magnificent construcion is highlighted with polychromatic ceramic tiles. The semicircular plaza has a diametre of 200 metres and is flanked by two spectacular towers and a bordering lake that are especially worth seeing. It was built for of the Ibero-american Exhibition of 1929, held in Seville. Its creator was Aníbal González. He mixed a style inspired by the Renaissance with typical elements from the city: exposed brick, ceramics and wrought iron (worked by Domingo Prida). Its floor plan is semicircular. It is dominated by 2 towers, one on each side of the enclosed area, which frame the central building where the main rooms are. Between the two towers runs a network of galleries with an arcade of semicircular arches leading to exits in different parts of the square, where a fountain stands.

ROYAL ALCAZAR & CITY CENTRE

Once you’ve enjoying the renowned beauty within the palace, exit to the gardens and treat your senses to the magic of the estate.

The Alcázar has provided the setting for a number of films, including Lawrence of Arabia, the Kingdom of Heaven. and most recently, the fifth series of the Game of Thrones.Enclosed within its walls is an impressive preservation of Renaissance, Baroque and XIX century influence. Breathing in the fresh air and walking among the maze of orange trees is the perfect way to digest the magic of the Alcazar. Originally a Moorish fortress, the Royal Alcazar of Seville is the oldest European royal palace still in use. The palace has greatly transformed since its inception as a Roman fort. A long history of alterations, expansions, and renovations have created a defining mixture of styles. Bring snacks, water, sunscreen and layers of clothing, as the conditions vary greatly depending where you are in the palace. If you prefer eating out, there are lots of great tapas bars in the area around the palace worth visiting.spend an entire day wandering the stunning complex.

Over the past couple of years, drone technology has taken travel videos to new heights. Who hasn’t been inspired by stunning images of cities bustling from above, or a hiker perched on the ridge of a mountain? If you ever wanted to be the star of your own epic travel video, your time has come. Finally, drone technology has caught up to the average consumer in both price and size.

DJI SPARK If image quality is impor tant to you, but you still want some thing that feels light and easy, this is a small drone for travel but but not quite as pricey. This drone can capture images in 1080p.

Another mid-price drone option, the Parrot Bebop 2 is a small drone that can shoot video in 1080p and boasts a 25-minute flight time. This particular package also includes FPV goggles, so you can be totally immersed in what your drone is filming. While this travel drone is on the small side, the legs are also fixed, and the controller seems to be much bulkier than necessary. For a deal on image quality and portability, the DJI MAVIC AIR is one of the best travel drones available right now. Although it appears to be larger than the Spark, it’s actually smaller and more portable when fully folded. It’s more expensive, but it offers a lot better image quality and increased maneuverability. By flying higher, further, and for longer, this small drone packs a professional punch. Within the world of photography, the price is also extremely reasonable. This is an ideal first drone for anyone who has a lot of photography experience and wants to jump head-first into the drone world.
