The century-old building of the railway station, designed by architect George Harding, is one of the most prominent landmarks of Chennai. The station is also a main hub for the Chennai Suburban Railway system. It lies adjacent to the current headquarters of the Southern Railway and the Ripon Building. During the British Raj, the station served as the gateway to South India, and the station is still used as a landmark for the city and the state. It is connected to Moore Market Complex railway station, Chennai Central metro station, Chennai Park railway station, Park Town railway station and is 2 km from Chennai Egmore railway station.

STATION
Madras Central is a grand station built in the Romanesque revivalist style, with round arched arcading and windows capped by “vanegated coloured voussoirs. The four corner towers with an imposing central one and the roof ridges have a fine iron finish situated opposite to the main entrance to the General Hospital, it was originally built by the Old Madras Railway Company. The main station, a combination of Gothic and Romanesque styles has been declared as a Heritage Building.

This is the Transit Zone where people from Central Metro/Park Station/ Park Town Station could access Chennai Central Station & Suburban Terminal and vice versa.
12
Two wheelers enter station from VP hall compound road and have a separate parking. Service entry is separate from two wheeler entry & exit.
The first picture is a Holistic View of Chennai Central Railway Station showing the movement of people from transit station commuting. It has been designed in such a way that vehicular movement is brought up such that it will not collide with pedestrian movement. The Chennai Central Railway Station is located in an area which is surrounded by three suburban railway network (namely Park Station, Park town Station & Chennai suburban) and a metro station. While Designing, it was made sure that all these transit stations are linked up together so that passengers could easily commute to any part of the city. A Pedestrian park was designed linking all transit stations and Chennai Central Railway Station. This was also known as Green Park, as most of the part was covered with landscapes and it had pathways (leading to respective suburban stations/metro station/railway station) for the pedestrians to commute daily. Since this park had people most of the time, as people used to commute all part of the days, the temperature/heat of the park is reduced comparatively 3-4 degrees celsius of the outside temperature. The park is designed in such a way that pedestrian feels comfortable while commuting from one transit station to another. The second picture is a view seen from a road leading to the Departure level of the railway station. The basic idea is to bring the vehicular movement up. The newly designed station is on the backside of the old Chennai Central Railway Station as seen in this picture. To the new station, there is been an addition called the Departure level - Air Space Development (an artificial level is designed above the present platform level). So people who board train, will directly come to departure level and from there they will be taken to the respective platform using vertical circulation. Passengers those who arrive by train (i.e people who get down at Chennai central railway station from the train) at the station, will be directed to the Old Chennai Central building which is also known as the arrival lounge or they can go to transit hub from there they can go to any transit stations. The Main Design Principle was to SEGREGATE the Departure Passengers (people who board the train) & Arrival Passengers(people who get down at the station) by creating a level difference.
THE PROCESS... The above pictures describe the process in the Re-development of the Chennai Central Railway Station. There are two stages in the process of development, One Addressing the Urban Issue (traffic congestion due to the improper articulation of vehicular & pedestrian movement) & another one is to develop a new Railway Station (i.e Air Space Development Departure Concourse) at the backside of the Heritage Building. The Urban Issue was solved by proposing a Flyover and a Pedestrian Park which articulated vehicular and pedestrian movements without any congestions. The Form of newly developed Railway Station was designed in such a way that it is Functional (for day to day activities) and Aesthetically Appearing. The Pictures above describes the step by step process in the development of the Form.
ROOF PROFILE
PATTERN - Developed from Fractal Geometry
SIDE PROFILE
JALLI PANEL
Wind Movement inside the Railway Station - NATURAL VENTILATION Natural Lighting - Energy Consumption of this Railway Station is negligible during Daytime, as the whole Station receives natural lighting through the Jalli Panels (which is placed on both sides of the Railway Station) and the Sky lighting in the Roof.
Passive energy-saving measures and active ecological technology combined in the design effectively reduced the Energy Consumption of the Railway Station, comprehensively improving the environmental protection of the Station.
Natural Ventilation - Fresh cold air enters through the Jalli Panels into the Railway station on both sides of the building. The Hot air rises and exits through the exhaust in the roof panels.
COLUMN ISOMETRIC
The first picture is a view of passengers passing through the Security Screening. Once the passengers reach the Departure level, there are five Entrance Vestibules which leads to the respective platforms. There is one Entrance Vestibule from the Transit Hub for those passengers who come from transit stations. Accordingly, passengers will enter into the Departure level through Entrance Vestibule. After entering the Station through the Entrance Vestibule, they must go to the Security Screening Area, where the passengers & their Baggage will be scanned. There are 20sets of WTMD (walk through metal detector) & X-Ray Baggage Scanners in the ratio of 1:1000 (1set:1000passengers) according to the standards, which helps in the fast movement of passengers to reach their respective Platform Gates. This process is similar to that of Airports. As this part of the station has more number of passengers, this part is designed in a way to get more natural light and ventilation. This Security Screening Area has four Elliptical Domes through which allows a sufficient amount of sunlight to enter the area.
The second picture is a view of Departure Concourse. After passing through the Security Screening, passengers enter the Departure Concourse, where they would find their respective Gate. In front of each Gate, adequate space is given for passengers to wait. In the meanwhile, passengers can either wait in the waiting area or they can spend their time shopping at Supermarkets & Retail Stores in the Departure Concourse. There are many facilities in the Departure Concourse like Multi-cuisine Restaurants, Bars, Food Courts, Supermarkets, Retail Stores, Dispensary, Cafe Lounge & Play Area for children. So passengers have plenty of options to do instead of waiting in front of their Gate, (which leads to the platform level). Chennai Central Railway station has Island Platforms i.e railways tracks on both sides of the platform, as shown in the picture below.
So two platforms shares one Gate, (example, Platform 1&2 shares one Gate) which will be in the centre of the Island Platform. These Gates consist of an escalator, a staircase & two elevators which helps in the vertical circulation of the passenger. Travelers use these Gates to come down to Platform level to board the train. This Departure Concourse is Naturally Ventilated as there isn’t any kind of artificial ventilation. Also, the Departure Concourse is naturally light up. So this Station conserves much of the energy sources.

Shopping Arcade PROJECT : LOCATION : East Coast Road, Chennai
02 The 21st Century City is poised for a total transformation of the “shopping mall”, and consequently for the entire idea of public interaction, desire and commerce. Shopping mall can create a field of experience which is multidimensional and interdisciplinary. It is in this way, the great traditions of public spaces, the market, desire and fulfillment are connected to our present—which creates a future that is both unexpected and compelling. Along with business centers and offices, Mall is one of the western typology in India, started from major centers and now slowly changing the built and socio-economic structure of minor cities. The experience of this Shopping Arcade is mixture of variety of spaces, enclosures, juxtaposition of spaces, vibrancy, shades of color. Together it gives the idea for shopping as an experience. The site for the shopping arcade is located near Mayajal Multiplex at ECR.
More than a Commercial Place...
The site is located along the East Coast Road and this is a rough illustration of a beach view as seen from the site. The site has a beautiful view of the beach, from where the concept evolved. The main idea was to recreate the scenic view of the beach in an abstract way and to design spaces for people so that they could enjoy the scenic beauty.
Form computation - Hemispherical form
Introducing some space(viewing gallery) in the void so that people could enjoy the view.
A Void has been created in the centre of hemispherical form so that the sea breeze could flow through.
The entrance portico is designed as an abstract form of a reflection of the mall.
Adding artificial water bodies on three sides of the Mall
Floor plates aligned according to the shape of the hemispherical form.
Blending all these elements to form a spectacular cosmic silhouette.

PROJECT : Women and Child Health Care Hospital LOCATION : East Coast Road, Chennai
03 Woman is a very special person, in body and mind, and that the best healthcare for her emerges from a deep understanding of her physiology, emotions, aspirations and anxieties, the department aims to be her health comfort zone. The Centre is committed to providing world-class healthcare exclusively for women. To provide excellent healthcare services for expectant mothers in need of special pre and post natal care. Designing a health care space needs a more prudent approach than any other building typologies since it should consider so many parameters into the edifice. The design is an avant-garde in hospital design serving as a forerunner for sensible health care . The site for the 100 Bedded Women health care hospital is located near Amritha tech part at ECR .

MOTHER AND THE CHILD
Picasso, Form and the Voronio The biggest inspiration for this design comes from one of the finest artworks of Pablo Picasso, the mother and the child. This artwork depicts a mother and her children on the way to a town in search of food and shelter. Despite the fact that she is very weak, and also poor, she is traveling a long distance and didn’t let down the hands of her children. It shows the true affection of a mother towards her children. Since this is a Mother and Child Care hospital, this artwork of Pablo Picasso has influenced the design of the hospital. The idea was to symbolically represent the affection of a mother towards her children in an abstract way.
The basic form has evolved with three cuboids for OPD, Emergency & Administration, and this OPD and Emergency blocks placed parallelly so that the entrance for both could be on different sides.
So these cuboids fused together to form the basic structure of this Hospital. The primary form of this buildingt is based on Zoning & Circulation.
After developing the ba next process was addin portant spaces like Ope Diagnostics which was the Emergency ward and
Group of cells form collective groups of from which this stru
asic structure, the ng upon some imerating theatre and positioned above d OPD respectively.
There was a need for more space so as to include additional and important functions in the hospital. So to accommodate these spaces, a cuboid was placed above the structure.
The Cuboid’s huge cantilever portion has been supported by two columns of width around three meters, which resembles the hand of the mother holding the foetus.
a foetus - this was the basic idea in deriving the pattern for the front facade. The voronio here represents cells, so this facade is a cells which sysbolically represents a foetus. And this facade, together with the column, represents the core concept of the artwork, ucture has been evolved.
The View of Women and Child Care Hospital seen from the East Coast Road.

CENTRE FOR PERFORMING ARTS
PROJECT : Centre for Performing Arts LOCATION : Pragathi Maidan, Delhi
04 The site for the Centre for Performing Arts is Pragati Maidan, a cultural and historical epicenter in Luytens Delhi. The architecture of this complex has been designed based on three art forms - SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA BALLET and OPERA. The reason is, that there are not much places in India to celebrate these emphatic art forms. There is the immediate context of the site itself- some of the buildings inside the Pragati Maidan complex hold some very noteworthy stories. Zoom out a little, and there is the context of Delhi and Dilli - Lutyens Delhi, the Purana Qila. This probably also helped dictate the language of architecture of Pragati Maidan to be contemporary Indian. Finally a macro level context of Delhi itself maybe looked at. Delhi has been duly credited for being a cultural hub of India since time immemorial. What sets the performing arts apart from the rest of the art forms is that the artistic expression is through the physical presence of an artist. Keeping in mind these graceful art forms, the architecture of this complex is set to be modern and boldly expressive, which is the nature of performing arts by itself, articulating itself amongst the contrasting historical architectural style of the surroundings.
PRAGATI MAIDAN, DELHI
AMPHITHEATRE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
BALLET
AUDITORIUM
The site for the Centre for Performing Arts is Pragati Maidan, a cultural and historical epicenter in Luytens Delhi. The architecture of this complex has been designed based on three art forms - SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA BALLET and OPERA. The reason is, that there are not much places in India to celebrate these emphatic art forms.
OPERA
PUBLIC GATHERING SPACES AUDITORIUM
AMPHITHEATRE
It all started with two cuboids, one for the back stage and another one for audience.
Since it is an auditorium for performing arts which is expressive, all sides of the cuboids were curved to bring in fluidity in the form.
The basic form of the amphitheatre according to the standards were taken into designing part.
Twelve level seating was designed according to the basic form. The entrance to the amphitheatre was given in the centre.
Th gre
The front part was pushed in from the sides, in order to bring in more light.
he exterior form of the amphitheatre was inspired from the eat colosseum, and so the same type of arches were added
Thus the final basic outline sketch of the auditorium was derived.
Ionic columns were added in between arches which added more aethestics to the amphitheatre.
Keeping in mind these graceful art forms, the architecture of this complex is set to be modern and boldly expressive, which is the nature of performing arts by itself, articulating itself amongst the contrasting historical architectural style of the surroundings. The Auditorium is set in the form of a cube, as an abstract representation of the art form. It is not visibly perfect, but bound to be expressive, visible through the curved shape of each cube of the block. Thus, expressionism of the art form has been conveyed through these abstract cubes. The Auditorium consists of grand public foyer which is expressive. Free flowing area of improvisation. The back entrance of the auditorium is meant for production facilities and the chief guest entry. Auditorium consists of 600 seats. Seating is segregated into three levels. First level is LOWER FLAT AREA, usually below or at the same level as the stage. Second level is the BALCONY and the Third level is the BOXES.
Amphitheatre is a open air theatre for viewing drama. The first ever amphitheater in the whole world was the Colosseum, at Rome. It was also one of the greatest works of architecture to stand against time. This structure was taken as an abstract inspiration and expressed in this amphitheater structure.
SCHOOL OF BALLET
SCHOOL OF SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
SCHOOL OF OPERA
Symphony Orchestra A glorified art form till date, Symphony Orchestra utilizes various instruments placed in a proper orchestration (arrangment), to collectively mesmerize the audience. Each family of instruments of the orchestra has been represented in the complex. The string family, through the panels of glass amongst a circular concrete enclosure, and the solid pillars in harp, decorating the entrance. The Brass family represented by the block in the shape of a trumpets mouth, over the complex.
Opera
Ballet
One of the oldest forms of stage drama, opera is a classical art form in which emotions are expressed in a combination of text and music. The opera is represented by a set of masks known as Comedy and Tragedy masks - symbolising the emotions in a drama. This symbol has been taken as an abstract inspiration and has been represented through the curves on the outer face of the building.
A ballet is a classical way expression of emotions through dance, and it has been one of the most impressive and hardest classical art forms to master, and also has been the origin of many modern dance forms. The hall is built on an abstract concept inspired from the five basic feet positions of ballet, in which the body weight is supported by the toes, heels are lifted up, legs separated .This challenging move is represented in an abstract form through the orientation of the two blocks of the hall.
E N
P O I N T E
The core idea was to represent the Ballet School as an abstract depiction of one of the Ballet moves En Pointe.
COMEDY
AND
The school of ballet contains two bloc form of En Pointe.
TRAGEDY
The form for the Opera school is a cubiod, which was inspired from the comedy and tradegy mask
The cuboid was split into two, with each block representing Comedy and Tragedy respectively.
ORCHESTRATION
The form of Symphony Orchestra is trapezoidal which represents an orchestration.
A part of the front portion was taken off to add faux columns, to represents string family
A circular part was removed side of the form, to represen chamber.
BALLET
cks, in the
Opera is a combined act of comedy and tragedy. To represent this, both the blocks were joined together by a common floor in the top.

Patterns of urban land use are inherently linked to the predominantly used means of transportation, both generating being generated themselves. While each mode of transportation shapes a different development typology a clear understanding of their interrelations and dependencies is needed in order to create a comprehensive mobility strategy. By analyzing the efficiency and sustainability of all six main modes of transportation the results offer a holistic comprehensive view. While, despite current practices, no mobility strategy can focus on a single means of transportation. Identifying a clear link between urban land use patterns, infrastructure quality and perceptions and the most efficient means of transportation for each particular city type mobility strategies could shift the trend of urban development towards a more sustainable one.
EFFICIENT & SUSTAINABLE MODE OF TRANSPORTATION To determine the most efficient and sustainable mode of transportation, 12 criteria were analyzed, based on ecology, economy and society. 1.Necessary space per person 2.Air Pollution 3.Health
4.Route Flexibility 5.Comfort 6.Age Restriction
7.Ability to transport Cargo 8.Speed/TIme 9.Noise Pollution
10.Social Interaction 11.Cost 12.Fuel Flexibility
To choose a particular mode of transport, the most important factor remains the speed and time required to reach the destination.Comparing the maximum distance that can be reached in an amount of time, considering the average speed of each mode of transportation. Considering the climatic factors, traffic conditions, age/gender etc, average speed of each mode of transportation was calculated. All routes were thoroughly tested for one week. For each mode of transportation, data was used to create a map, illustrating the covered area in 2 minutes increment.
It takes some time to reach the nearest public transit stop. Adding the average waiting time, it takes 10> minutes to cover the full area of Nungambakkam in public transit.
The area covered on Foot in 10 minutes, divided in 2 minutes segments, a total of 80% were covered .
The total area covered on Bicycle is 10> minutes.

Pedestrian Auto Rickshaw
Public Transit Four Wheeler
To cover the whole area of Nungambakkam in a short period of time, the most efficient mode of transportation is proven to be Auto Rickshaw, Four Wheeler & Two Wheeler. For each criterion, a score of 1-5, was assigned, based on the results from the above mentioned. Thus, the efficiency and sustainability of each mode of transportation are clearly illustrated. From the total possible score of 60, cycling and pedestrian transit obtained least score 24-26, proving themselves to be the most sustainable. The most unsustainable mode of transportation is Four Wheeler.
The Pedestrian & Bicycle transit is sustainable and most efficient for short distance, having a problem in the comfort criterion in case of rainfall & extreme temperatures. Two Wheeler is the best mode of transportaroute comfort social age transport tion in Nungambakkam considering the effiflexibility interaction restriction cargo ciency & sustainability factors.
