TOWER-AS URBAN VALLEY
A Manifesto of Sustainable Highrise Mode for Hong Kong
Hongkong University and Chongqing University 2013Fall Joint-design studio: “New life of Old Wanchai” Supervisor: Qi Tian, Oliver Ottevaere Team Member: Mengyu Li Role: Concept, Sketch, Modeling, Plan, Rendering, Photoshop Location: Wanchai, Hongkong High density of vertical urbanism in Hong Kong has caused a serious dichotomy of Hong Kong Island is showing us a dichotomy between vast green land and high-density urban activity area, and severe problem of wind obstacle, which leads to heat island effect. However we hope to create a new skyscraper prototype building that will not only be a paradise for human beings, but also for plants, birds, insects and other animals to share; and that the building will not only be a cold landmark, but to become a living landscape organism, which can metabolize spontaneously with the changing of seasons. To strengthen the concept, we apply the Ecotect and CFD technology to do research about the soil-covered strategy for podium and vertical greening strategy for tower. Also we apply the double-skin strategy to strengthen the energy efficiency.

HK: CITY OF DICHOTOMY
Hong Kong Island is showing us a dichotomy between vast green land and high-density urban area. The most important reason for this state lies in the high land-price policy that Hong Kong government takes——The government strictly limit the annual land supply, thereby to maximize the benefits of land for sale. In Hong Kong, many rich people are living in green land forest, peacefully and gracefully. However, common people are living in the concrete forest. Their living space is dramatically compressed and the open green space around them is small and limited. People are suffering from problems such as dust, noise, air and light pollution .
NEW WANCHAI: URBANISM OF CONNECTION
PROTOTYPE I: URBAN VALLEY Behind the site is a piece of urban green park, and next to the site is a secondary commercial street. However both the park and the street are blocked by the dense old buildings in the site, our shading strategy is to combine podium’s soil covered terrace with high land park, which forms a green valley.
PROTOTYPE II: VERTICAL GREENING TOWER We let parks develop to the vertical and extend the greenbelt meanwhile forming a diastrophism spiral vertical park which could be enjoyed by the citizens living in high density areas. This mode of increasing afforestation can be of vital importance to the moderation of urban heat island effect.
PROTOTYPE III: DOUBLE-SKIN SPACE The tower applys double-skin technology according to the climatic features of Hong Kong. The skin has a rainwater collecting& irrigation system as well as a solar energy system. At the same time, the double-skin can form a buffering layer in-between space, the stagger platforms of each floor form a greening balcony which enrich the taste of the space.

URBAN VALLEY FABRIC On site, lively secondary streets are hidden— veins of them are cut off by the chaos buildings along the main road. The site located in the old community, gathers plenty of small shops and designer firms, but lacks of a high-quality space node and art/ commercial center. Besides, this site, while adjacent to the mountain, is still blocked to the green land by existing chaos old buildings.

GREENING continue greenland
NODES create new nodes
INNER STREET SYSTEM In response, our design emphasize on continuing existing streets, activating a new art/commercial node and stretching the green land to urban area, in order to not only insert space with more humanity, but also inspire the social potential of the site.

SUSTAINABLE STRATEGY ADJUSTING VOLUME DISTRIBUTION With the help of CFD software, we can adjust the volume and shape of our building, in order to help improve the wind condition of this district to respond to the severe problem of heat island effect in Hong Kong. 1 Soil-covered block for the podium to hide block which resist wind 2 Cylinder-like shape for the tower Based on the preveiling wind in summer chart. We choose optimum orientation of the Vally Street which is suitable for ventilation— east to west orientation. As the final chart of CFD shows, our strategies really work to lead more wind flow smoothly.

Columbia University GSAPP 2017 Spring Studio: " Art as Social Infrastructure" Instructor: Galia Solomonoff Location: Chengdu, China The art of music is believed to originate when individuals began to express their feelings of rhythm from nature, and share the rhythm of body during collective labor. Historically, the art of music has been used to praise God for religion faith, serve Party for political propaganda, or celebrate entertainment for commercialized boom, etc. The Chengdu We-Music Venue as a new art infrastructure program, weaves the politicized music production chain with local citizens’ daily lives. The We-Music venue creates a music intra-net within. 1 to empower citizens’ music potential and self-expression lifestyle, building music community. 2 to create “freedom zone” for independent music art free from controlling of political and commercial forces.
NEW CHINA CULTURE REVOLUTION 1942-1978 During the Cultural Revolution music into a struggle tool, literary and artistic works can only praise the Cultural Revolution, otherwise it is “seal repair”. China has literary and political subordinate politics, pay attention to class tradition, most of the main melody songs have a strong political background. Which makes the main melody of the song tend to focus on the expression of collectivism.
CHINESE ECONOMIC REFORM ANTI-SPIRITUAL POLLUTION CAMPAIGN 1978-1985 The early 80s is to remove the spirit of pollution, the lyrics appear snuggle, hugs are considered vulgar, Western pop music was denied The music would progress into Chinese rock, which remained popular in the 1990s.
HARMONIOUS SOCIETY 1985-2013 The music would progress into Chinese rock, which remained popular in the 1990s. However, music in China is very much state-owned as the TV, media, and major concert halls are all controlled by the Communist party.
SUPER GIRL SUPER BOY 2004-2012 Super Girl or Super Voice Girls was a Chinese singing contest for female contestants, organized by Hunan Satellite Television between 2004 and 2006. It was generally described as the unofficial mainland Chinese version of the global television franchise Pop Idol (2001) and became one of the most popular entertainment shows in the country.
THE VOICE OF CHINA 2012-2015 The Voice of China is a Chinese reality television singing competition broadcast on Zhejiang Television. Based on the original The Voice of Holland, the concept of the series is to find new singing talent (solo or duets) contested by aspiring singers drawn from public auditions. The winner is determined by votes cast by a media judging panel and live audience. They receive a record deal with various labels for winning the competition.
SING MY SONG! 2014-2016 Sing My Song is a Chinese reality talent show that premiered on 3 January 2014 on CCTV-3 (Arts and Entertainment) channel sponsored by Hangzhou Wahaha Group and Wahaha Joint Venture Company. The series is produced by the same team that produced the The Voice of China and retains some of that show’s format; however, a major difference is that contestants in Sing My Song must perform their original composition rather than covering songs by other artists.

Columbia University GSAPP 2015Summer Studio: "The School of Schools— Manifesto for New Pedagogy Space of Architecture " Instructor: Eric Bunge, Mimi Hoang Team member: Siqi Yang · Role: Concept, Sketch, Modeling, Diagram Location: Manhattan, NYC, USA Just like an inspiring performance by famous visiting troupes, the shows by visiting architecture schools from all over the world can also be a spectacle for public. Each architecture visiting school which is on rotating basis to come to New York has its own identity for pedagogy and studio space. Also we regarded each school’s intellectual and physical resources precious and have potential of larger civic and social function. Our manifesto of this new type of rotating-school institution is to operate it as a theatre. Inside the building, Mobile Function Platforms can change scenes based on the need of studios of different architecture schools; Outside the building, the interaction of our building’s different-layer squares and adjacent city squares provide space for the schools to hold their own designing show, which can activate the communication of the school and public.
THEATER: VERTICAL TRANS-SCENES MACHINE Within school of schools, different visiting schools have different emphasize of their program and need different consitution of function rooms. Also within different phrase of design, studios need different kind of function support. Scenes should change very frequently. Conventional space mode may cause pedagogy low-efficiency. So we proposed a high-efficiency studio space which the constitution can transform based on the need of different schools.

Seasonal transformation of ice and water is significant in Harbin because of big temperature difference. And thus people’s daily activities are different in seasons which have much to do with water or ice. My goal is to insert a new spectacle into the historical city plaza which could be inviting to citizens in all seasons, so material of water was taken as my concept to not only create more possible activities, but also bring phenomenological beauty of changing material. At the same time, combined with structuralism flexible units according to the module, more possibility of space and function are created.

Chongqing University 2013 Spring Studio: "History On Topography" Type: Individual Work Supervisor: Qi Tian Location: Chongqing Old City, China Duration: 02/2013—04/2013
The site is located in the old city of Chongqing, which is a mountainous area with great range of elevation. The theme of the museum is about history. So there are mainly two researches done before the design. One is the typology research about ways to deal with the topography of Chongqing and how to apply them in a cosmopolitan way. The other is about how to translate the abstract intellectual theme of history into physical space experience of circulation, making full use of the unique mountainous topography of Chongqing.
Old City of Chongqing
TOPOGRAPHY RESEARCH The site of this history museum is located in the mountainous old city district of Chongqing. This area is regarded as the historical symbol of Chongqing’s culture identity. During the design process, related researches were done to about the cultural typologies of old Chongqing city, in order to design the historic museum to mingle with surrounding old city fabric in harmony.
ART OF WANDERING THROUGH TIME I: EXCAVATING CORE CULTURE THEMES FROM ADJACENT CHONGQING OLD CITY BUILDINGS
In total, my sense for the old city history museum is to not only excavate the core culture themes of the regional culture, but also transform them into a innovative modern construction and thus create a new regional style.

There are three important eras of the development of Chongqing old city in history as follows. The exhibition content of each history era are curated into 3 flowing-space rooms after the volume has been divided according to the scale of surrounding old city dwelling houses. 1949-2016 1929-1948
1891-1928 1891-1928 Qing Dynasty: Opened to foreign traders and boomed
1929-1948 the Republic of China: Developed to a big city and then capital of China
1949-2016 People’s Republic of China: Developed after liberation and became a municipality

WILLINSTO
Columbia University 2016 Fall Adv Studio Supervisor: Andres Jaque, Type: Individual Work Intervening Object: Fracking Industry of the US Duration: 09/2016—12/2016 Fracking industry produces nomadism and it lead to unique urbanism behind it, which is called man camp. Like in the city Willinston, fracking company injected capital to the region and then attracted fracking-workers to move, congregating in this moveable living pattern. However located in the deserted suburban, it not only hurt the nature environment of the man camp site and dehumanize workers’ daily domesticity, but also cause social conflicts between segregated fracking nomads and local citizens, revealed by anthropology report from ND university. This project proposes a plan to build a social innovation of the fracking nomadic urbanism mode at the city boundary by redeploying the potential of forces from different agencies. At the boundary of the city. The nomadic community would be organized in a system of permanent architecture, nature and occupying temporary architecture catering different needs and important activities shared by both locals and nomadic new comers. Here in new life scenarios, the assembled two population can both benefit from investing, building and sharing architecture with each other.
