RAW INTERSPERSE | ‫اختالل لني‬

In the spirit of Jahani Pallasmaas THE EYE OF THE SKIN - Architecture and the Senses: The first step was taken by presenting own perception and vision reflecting the complex relation between your body and an atmosphere that could enhance your being. The main and the final goal was how Nature interacts with the space and intersperse through it. There were many ways how nature can have an impact on patient’s health as well as the their psychology. Encourging the ue of natural elements and and processing it as design inspiration in the built enviroment. The idea behind this is that exposure to natural enviroments and features have positive effects on human health and wellbeing, which has been supported in multiple wealth researches. Also, if built enviroments are incorporating natural elements in their design. According to research papers there is positive effects on range of psychological outcomes such as improved cognitive functioning, reduced stress, and improved mood, which all contribute to improved health and wellbeing. Engaging these natural elements could be divided into two categories: -Direct Experience of Nature -Indirect Experience of Nature

6

From the concept of how nature is so related to the human and how it is important to the human body both physically and psychologcally. And the realtionship betwen nature and manmade which was concluded from the site analysis; of how nature immersed between walls, pavements and other manbuilt elements. Both conepts inspired how the site was divided, the urban approach and how the building was formed. The idea of how a crack is naturally formed is translated with the same system while architecturally. In other words, the main axis of the project were tran formed into a network of carcks forming masses, voids and the landscape. There is an inverse relation between the density of nature and manbuilt, as we go private tenderly nature takes over and the building becomes more scatered and more random. The site is mainly divided into three zones. First zone is the public zone containing all the public facilities. Second, is the private where there is the treatment rooms, hydro therapy, administration, staff rooms, ect. Third, the most private zone which is mainly the park adjecent to the land of the site. It is where Nature is dominating; nature increases. Therfore, according to the concpet of privacy it contains the inpatient rooms.

7

8

The grid or the network of cracks created the seperation between the public and private through the seperation of levels. It also created the form of each mass. Each mass contains a “crack which can be considered as main circulation for the function. In addition, it can be considered as a source of natural and ventilation. In the third floor, they also act as a seperator in each function between males and females. In the other two floors the gender seperation is through the floors. Last but not least, the last crack is connecting the private zone to the most private which contains the inpatient rooms in the park. So, at a point it is connected to the path that leads to the rooms.

As the site is already divided into three zones according to privacy; there is more than one main entrance. Both entrances are reached through Khaled Ibn Elwalid st., which is already serving the flow of people. The first entrance is for the public zone through the ground floor level +0.00, between Iberotel an existing hotel and the public building which contains all the public facilities (extra medical center, library, audiomax, ect). The entrance is mainly a path with different material; and the whole zone is considered as a public space connecting to another public space on the opposite side which was established in the urban approach. The path ramps till it reaches level -2.00m.

9

10

As for the materiality and the facade concept I wanted to continue with the idea of engaging nature with the building. According to the materials it is rammed earth, as an infill of the walls. Whilist, the structure is concrete. The choice of the facade material was inspired by a quote of an egyptian architect; Hassan Fathy he said “God has created in every enviroment the material that can conquer its problems. The brilliance of an architect lies in his dealing with the materials he has beacause they are the materials that combact the cruelty of the enviroment. At the end we are all coming from earth and going back to it. Beside the high properties of rammed earth as insulation. nd simple for the eyes to see from the outside. Horiontal and long for the view (Le Corbusier) opening concept. for the view (Le Corbusier) opening concept. for the view (Le Corbusier) opening concept.

SYNTHESIS | Restoring The Urban Identity of MUMBAI

14

The project aims towards restoring the identity of the city of Mumbai, through the reintegration of the natural elements that were an iconic feature of the history of the city of Mumbai; including the mangrove forests, water tanks, and productive plantation. The design treats the Eastern Water Front as the middle ground where both entities -the natural elements and man made structures- seamlessly synthesize. One of the main features of the design is the restoration of the typology of the public space around the water tanks, which is not only valuable for its numerous functions, but for its cultural and religious influence, as well. Such typology further enhances the iconic relationship between the island city and the water. The water tanks are an integral part of the drainage system. They are connected to the low lying areas and are used to drain the water from the floodprone areas during the monsoon season.

The water is recycled and used for plantation of productive trees and green open spaces. Another most important aspect of the design is the plantation of mangrove forests. Mangroves can be highly beneficial in a context like Mumbai’s. The need for green open spaces is of utter necessity due to the poor air quality of the city and need for natural purifiers. Mumbai, also, suffers from high levels of soil contamination and water pollution, which the mangrove forests can also be the answer to. Mangrove roots are fed on by fish, thus acting as a catalyst for the fishing activity in the area. Hence, the fishing villages and fishing farms are placed in direct correspondence to the mangrove forests. While distributing the resedentail blocks having a rich DIVERSITY of socail income housing to exist in the same neighbourhood which is a situation already present in the existing fabric and at the same time to prevent any segregation.

15

16

The Expansion into the water encloses a series of tanks along the waterfront, shaped by the outline of the existing waterfront. These tanks are an attempt to restore the identity of the old typology of the public space, except that the tanks now not only hold the cultural and religious meaning they used to have, but also have multiple functions. Some of them provide a source of irrigation water for the productive green areas planted nearby. Others are designed as natural pools with added waterfiltration systems. And some others are used as fishing and aquaponic farms. These tanks are directly connected to the pedestrian promenade that spreads all along the waterfront, thus acting as public spaces but also as an intermediate zone between the city with its stict grid and the nature with its ecosystems and habitats, gradually enhancing the connection between both. The promenade is exclusive to pedestrians and cyclists. It encloses all of the proposed water tanks, creating a public space that is unique in quality and design. Tanks are directly connected to the promenade that spreads all along the waterfront, thus acting as public spaces

17

18

One way to help aid the fishing community through the design was the proposal of expanding the mangrove forests. Mangrove plays an important role in the purification of water, and the treatment of soil contamination, which affect the fishing activity negatively. Mangroves not only help in aleviating the quality of the water, but they act as a catalyst for the fishing activity. This is due to the fact that the mangrove roots are being fed on by the fish, thus increasing the number of fish available in the area. Another aspect of the design was the proposal of multiple new fishing villages. The new fishing villages are placed in direct correspondence with the mangrove extensions, so the fishing boats need not go out as far. The well-being of the ocean and the sustenance of the fishermen are in a rather great danger and in need of immediate attention. The fishing villages of Mumbai are dying.

AZBAKEYA MARKET HALL

The project was to design a modern Market Hall, which serves all the needs defined to a certain space program as well as the requirements a modern building should fulfill regarding construction, design and sustainability. The Marketis not only for selling food but also have additional functions such as restaurants, exhibition space, food courts, bookmarket. The Market serve as a sort of cultural hub and help to clarify and improve the current fuzzy urban situation. The site is the former park “Azbakeya Garden in Ataba, Cairo, framed by El-Gomhoreya Street (west), Ali Al Kasser street (north) the metro exit, the old opera telecom building and the Ataba Book Market (east) and the remaining part of the Ataba Garden with the Fencing Club on the south end. The location of the site is in between the downtown area of Cairo and Atab/Old Cairo, linking both zones. As an end point of 26 July street the new Market Hall is a new Urban Landmark of inner city of Cairo.

THREE COMMUNITY COURTYARD

The project is about a housing neighborhood in Luxor. It is mainly focusing on the clients and their daily routines, how they live how they work/live situation. These aspects influenced both the design process and the space organization (internally and externally).

Each client differ from the other one the type of job, the number of children which influence the size of the house and the incremental strategy which plays an important role in the design. There are two types of Incremental Strategies, vertically is the residential expansion and horizontally is the commercial expansion. And every typology differ from the other.
