“Trees in Focus” has been organized by the Anne Fontaine Foundation in order to raise awareness and funds that will be dedicated to reforestation efforts, especially in the Brazilian Atlantic forest. This exhibition features the works of international photographers who have generously brought their support to the project by providing the Foundation with artistic photographs inspired by trees. All pictures will be silently auctioned throughout the exhibition, from May 18 to May 25, and a live auction will be organized on May 25 at 7:00pm. Curator: Christine Dutreil, Executive Director of the Anne Fontaine Foundation

THE ANNE FONTAINE FOUNDATION The Anne Fontaine Foundation is a non-profit organization, created in 2011 by the French-Brazilian fashion designer Anne Fontaine. The Foundation aims to contribute to the reforestation and the protection of the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest - Mata Atlântica – and to raise awareness about endangered forests through Art and Fashion.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS The Anne Fontaine Foundation selects concrete projects that are implemented by Brazilian associations and develops partnerships with these organizations. It focuses on two main environmental goals: planting (especially endemic species) in degraded lands and restoring Spring sources in riparian areas. In order to guarantee the efficiency and sustainability of the programs, the Foundation meticulously conducts a follow-up of each project. With private properties and local farmers participation, there is profit for the rural economy and these projects are also an inssurance for the environmental implication for the present as well as our future. The 3 NGOs the Foundation partners with are Instituto Floresta Viva in southern Bahia, Instituto Terra in Minas Gerais and APNE in Pernambuco. Since 2012, the foundation has allowed them to plant more than 40,000 trees.

RAISE AWARNESS The Foundation strives to raise environmental awareness and to provide agroforestry qualification by associating local communities with reforestation projects. The Foundation promotes also the significant role and the benefits of the forests to humankind, through conferences, concerts, and artistic workshops with kids and students. Every year, the Foundation organizes Art contests in several schools in Rio de Janeiro and in New York City.

ABOUT ANNE FONTAINE Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Anne Fontaine has always felt very passionate about rainforests. She discovered their treasures, riches, and virtues at the young age of seventeen and quickly became committed to protecting the environment. As a young adult, she connected with nature while living amongst a South American Indian tribe. In 1992, after having moved to France, she came up with the concept of designing feminine white shirts, and launched the Anne Fontaine brand a year later. Anne Fontaine creations are now sold all over the world. More than ever dedicated to the environmental cause, Anne Fontaine created the Anne Fontaine Foundation in 2011 in order to protect the Brazilian Atlantic forest.

Rainforests are disappearing at an alarming rate. A few centuries ago, the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil (also known as Mata Atl창ntica) represented twice the size of France. Nowadays, it is one of the most endangered forests in the world, and its size is more comparable to that of the state of New York. Even with only 7% of its original surface left, the Atlantic rainforest remains home to one of the most important biodiversity reservoirs on Earth: 40% of the 20,000 plant species and 30% of the 2,315 animal species it contains are endemic. Besides being of crucial scientific importance, this rainforest is also vital to the fight against global warming. In addition, the forest plays a major economic and social role in providing the cities along the coast with water and it sustains many rural communities whose livelihoods are directly linked to the conservation of forest resources. The Anne Fontaine Foundation supports reforestation projects in the Mata Atl창ntica and raises awareness about the most endangered forests. The 33 photographs featured in the exhibition Trees in Focus will be sold to the benefit of the Anne Fontaine Foundation initiatives.
