Welcome to the new Augusta Adventure Fest in the magnificent south west corner of WA. What a paradise for adventure this place is…. the fresh air flows free, the coastline is wild and untamed and the terrain varies from tall Karri tree forests to coastal hinterland dotted with wildflowers. You will get to enjoy all this and much more as part of this event so get ready for a great adventure. The Augusta Adventure Fest follows a new format in 2018 with a range of standalone events held alongside the spectacular Adventure Race and Junior Survivor events on Sunday. We thank YOU for supporting this new format, for stepping up, giving it a go and challenging yourself by trying something new in this breath-taking part of the world rather than watching from afar. Good luck! Above and beyond the landscape, it’s also the people that make this event so memorable, so bring your mates, pack your friendly faces and join us for what will certainly be another awesome event ‘down south. We have a jumping castle set up on Saturday and Sunday that’s free for kids. And don’t forget the Act-Belong-Commit Augusta Junior Survivor taking place on Sunday afternoon which gives kids their own adventure event (details below)


Food and beverages

There will be a range of tasty food and beverages available from a variety of stands inside the Adventure Expo all weekend including coffee stands, crepes, hamburgers, french patisserie, fruit salads and juices, ice-cream and plenty more. The event bar will also be in full swing and makes the ideal location for a pre-race catch up or post race celebration.

Massage supplied by Rural Fitness with two different options: • Mobile Massage (therapist comes to your accommodation). Available Saturday between 4pm & 9pm only. 30mins $40, 60mins $80. Live splits from each finish line and transition area will be sent directly to the web during the race so you can see current race standings. You can also track specific athletes to see how they are going. (These links will also be posted on the event website as part of our live coverage).

TRAFFIC & PARKING NOTES The Augusta Adventure Fest will result in an increase number of cars in and around Augusta and the Cape Leeuwin area. Please be aware of these changes and considerate of others. Recommendations for how to avoid the traffic during race weekend: • Albany Tce will be closed to all cars from 4:00pm on Friday afternoon through to 3:00pm on Sunday afternoon. The only exception being between 6:30am and 7:30am on Sunday when it will be open so paddlers can drop their boat into the transition area for Sunday’s adventure race. • We encourage trail runners to catch the bus to the start line at Cape Leeuwin rather than drive as there is VERY LIMITED car parking out at the road end • Be aware of mountain bikers and runners crossing the Cape Leeuwin Rd. Traffic management personnel will be in place to direct cars but please allow a little extra time when these events are under way.


STANDALONE RACES The Augusta Adventure Fest includes a range of standalone races on Saturday, each with their own start line and finish line. Here follows a description of each race. Competitors can do just one or two of these races, or if competing in the Adventure Warrior, must compete in all standalone races, making your own way from the finish of one race to the start of the other before the listed start time.

2KM SHIRE OF AUGUSTA MARGARET RIVER OCEAN SWIM When: 8:30am Saturday 3rd November Start: Flinders Bay boat ramp. Mass start for all swimmers. Finish: on the beach adjacent the Deere St / Albany Tce junction. Course description: All swimmers will start together on the beach at Flinders Bay. Once under way, swimmers head out into the bay before turning left around a buoy and following the coastline back between the reef and the sand for a protected swim with plenty of scenery. Turn left at the final swim buoy marker and exit the water on to the sand and run through the Finish Line on the beach – well done! Rules / requirements / notes: • We will take spare clothing / bags from the start to the finish line while you swim. • All swimmers must wear the following items as provided at registration: • the numbered lycra bib worn over your wetsuit (provided at registration) • electronic timing band around your ankle (provided at registration) • the RED Funky Trunks swim cap (provided at registration)

GOLD COAST QLD / AUGUSTA, WA / LORNE, VIC

15KM OCEAN PADDLE When: 10:00am Saturday 3rd November Start: on the ocean beach side of the Hardy Inlet rivermouth (The Cut) Finish: Colourpatch grassy foreshore on Albany Tce then run 200m to the finish line in the Turner Caravan Park. Course description: The race will commence with a mass paddle start which will see all paddlers line up on the water at the river mouth and then set off through the small shorebreak. Paddlers head straight out for 500m before turning right around the turn-bouy and proceed south, hugging the coastline for 6km past Flinders Bay and Dead Finish (the southern end of the sandy beach). Shortly after passing Dead Finish paddlers veer south to the southern end of Seal Island where you do a U-Turn around a buoy (with the island on your left). Once you’ve turned around Seal Island, paddlers retrace their route heading north past Flinders Bay to paddle through the Rivermouth (The Cut) to land your boats on the grass / beach at Colourpatch and then run the final 200m through to the finish line in Turner Caravan Park This is a spectacular paddle course that allows for a sheltered paddle towards Seal Island and the lighthouse and pending weather conditions, some good down-wind runners on the way back. Rules / requirements / notes: • All paddlers must: • Carry an orange smoke flare. Flare must be attached to the paddler (the person) and not the boat. • Wear a helmet for the duration of the paddle (bike helmets are acceptable) • Wear a type 2 or 3 PFD at all times • Wear the numbered lycra bib worn over your PFD (provided at registration) • Wear the electronic timing band around your ankle (provided at registration) • Kayakers paddling an enclosed cockpit style of craft must wear a spray skirt. A pump or baler must be carried in all sea-kayaks or enclosed craft • We recommend that paddlers use a paddle leash (to prevent paddle being lost) and boat leash and have a whistle attached to your PFD • Some changes may be made to the course pending weather conditions on the day.

15KM CLIF BAR TRAIL RUN

When: 1:00pm, Saturday 3rd November Start: Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, Augusta. Your entry fee includes a bus from Augusta to the start line. Finish: Turner Caravan Park Water point: located at the ‘Telstra Tower’ at the 8.5km mark Bus Transport: Due to the shortage of parking at Cape Leeuwin, we recommend all runners catch the bus to the start line. The bus will leave from outside reception for the Turner Caravan Park at 12:15pm. The blue wrist band collected at registration is your ‘bus ticket’ onto the bus. We will bring back any spare clothes and bags from start to the finish. Course description: All runners gather on the giant granite domes overlooking the Southern Ocean, below the iconic Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse in Augusta. Runners start by heading up the rugged West Coast in a rock running frenzy, before joining the marked Cape to Cape track (C2C) at the Water Wheel. Continue following the C2C along the rocky shoreline and then as it climbs away from the water level and continues through the coastal heathland on a flowing single track. At the 7km pt runners turn right, away from the C2C track and climb steeply uphill on a sandy 4WD track to the ridgeline and into the Karri and Jarrah forest. You go past a water point at the 8.5km pt and then continue weaving through the trails on a well marked course, descending on fast running 4WD tracks into Augusta for a short street section that leads you triumphantly to the finish line at the Turner Caravan Park (the event venue). Rules / requirements / notes: • All runners must wear the number plate pinned to the front of your outmost garment (provided at registration) • We recommend that runners carry some hydration and a first aid kit during the run


GOLD COAST QLD / AUGUSTA, WA / LORNE, VIC 35KM MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE

When: 3:30pm Saturday 3rd November, 2018 Start: Eastern end of Albany Terrace, adjacent to the mini golf Finish: Turner Caravan Park Course description: Competitors start on Albany Tce under police escort and get under way heading south following Albany Tce and out on to Leeuwin Rd towards the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse for 4.5km. Just prior to the lighthouse, competitors turn right off the bitumen onto Skippy Rock Road for a long but gradual climb through the heathland with ocean views opening up in all directions. Turning left off Skippy Rock Road riders then follow a flowing course of mostly double track and dirt roads that explores the southern hinterland of the Cape to Cape wilderness. You’ll tackle several challenging hills but smile your way down some fast rolling descents on a looped ride with plenty of variety and trail riding fun. The last section of the course sees riders circumnavigate the local airstrip, before popping out of the trails onto Osanburg St and then left down Toy Place, crossing over Albany Terrace and turning left into the finish line in Turner Caravan Park. Rules / requirements / notes: All riders must: • Carry a first aid kit comprising no less than 2 x crepe bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 1 x triangular bandage, 2 x non-stick wound dressing pads and a pair of surgical gloves • Wear a certified bike helmet to AUS/NZ/US standard • Attach your number plate to the handle bars of the bike (provided at registration) • Normal road rules apply at all times - please be aware of cars and other road / trail users.



ADVENTURE RACE

Race start, 8:30am Sunday 4th November:

The start is located on the beach, adjacent to Sam Griffiths Reserve on Albany Terrace. This is approximately 2km south of the Turner Caravan Park. The event may be competed by relay teams with up to 4 members doing one leg each or individuals doing the entire race: • Teams: must transfer the numbered lycra race bib and electronic timing chip from one team mate to the next. These are your ‘relay batons’ and are provided at registration. • Individuals: must wear the numbered lycra race bib and electronic timing chip for the duration of the race.

COURSE DESCRIPTION 1KM OCEAN SWIM

Swimmers start on the beach and run into the water to swim out approx. 50m before turning left around the first cone buoy. Continue swimming inside the reef, parallel to the beach passing a second cone buoy on your left and then turn left around the third and final cone buoy to swim into the beach at the blue Rapid Ascent flags. After exiting the water run into the T1 transition area and teams hand over to your team mate or individuals change into run gear and keep going. In addition to wearing the race bib and timing chip, swimmers must: • wear the Funky Trunks swim caps - BLUE for individuals and YELLOW for teams (provided at registration) • transition inside the fenced off transition area on the beach • arrange for your support crew or team mates to collect your swim gear after you have left. Do not just leave your wetsuit on the sand.

6.6KM CLIF BAR TRAIL RUN

Runners exit T1 and head south, remaining on the beach and rocky foreshore all the way past Flinders Bay to a turn around point at the Augusta Boat Harbour. Runners return from the boat harbour on the new concrete footpath, and continue along some scenic bushland trails and quiet urban streets, heading north before arriving at T2 on Albany Tce. Run into the transition area and find your bike and/or your team mate and continue. In addition to wearing the race bib and timing chip, runners must: • Carry a first aid kit comprising no less than 2 x crepe bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 1 x triangular bandage, 2 x non-stick wound dressing pads and a pair of surgical gloves • Normal road rules apply at all times - WATCH FOR CARS on any street or dirt road sections

13.5KM MOUNTAIN BIKE

Mountain bikers start riding on Albany Terrace and Osnaburg Street before crossing over Leeuwin Rd (follow traffic management personnel instructions) and head into the flowing 4WD and single tracks in the hinterland. The course makes a number of turns and riders should take great care to ensure you are always following the course markings and do not get lost in the myriad of trails. Towards the end of the course riders go along the length of the airstrip before crossing back over Leeuwin Rd and descending back to T2 on Albany Terrace. Return your bike to the same location you collected it and continue into the kayaking TA. In addition to wearing the race bib and timing chip, riders must: • Carry a first aid kit comprising no less than 2 x crepe bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 1 x triangular bandage, 2 x non-stick wound dressing pads and a pair of surgical gloves • Wear a certified bike helmet to AUS/NZ/US standard • Attach your number plate to the handle bars of your bike • Store your bike in appropriate TA zone that match your race number. • Normal road rules apply at all times - WATCH FOR CARS on any street or dirt road sections


Adventure Race COURSE MAP


6KM INLET PADDLE

Once started, paddlers head upstream (north) on the inlet for approx 2.6km to the turn around point at 3 buoys located just past the last of the Augusta riverfront houses. We recommend going to the left (west) of the large sandbar infront of the TA). Do a U-turn at the 3 buoys and paddle back down the Inlet to a final right turn buoy just in front of the rivermouth cutting and then return your boat to the grass at the Colourpatch transition area on Albany Tce. Land your boat and then exit the TA at the far right hand end (where teams will meet up with your team mates). In addition to wearing the race bib and timing chip, paddlers must: • Wear a type 2 or 3 PFD at all times • Be aware of the buoys marking the course as indicated on the map – it is up to you to make sure you know where to go • Store your boat in the appropriate TA zone that match your race number. • Individuals must set up your paddle gear (paddle, PFD and other items) next to your boat - not in the bike TA • Note: flares and helmets are not required for this paddle. Some changes may be made to the course pending weather conditions on the day.

200M TEAM RUN

Team mates are encouraged to join their paddler for a final 200m sprint from the TA to the finish line in Turner Caravan Park. Please wait outside the fenced off TA at the exit (nearest the Turner Caravan Park) and meet up with your team there and bring it home together. Well Done!!

COURSE MANAGEMENT Transition areas and support crews:

Support crews are not mandatory for the Augusta Adventure Race or standalone races. They can make logistics a bit easier but they will have virtually no impact on your overall placing if you are organised before the event. The following guidelines are in place for all transition areas • Drop off: All transition areas will be open from 7:00am for equipment to be dropped off • Pick up: Please remove items from the transition areas as follows: • T1: Collect items by 10:00am. Items not collected by that time will be brought back to the Turner caravan park for you • T2, T3 and T4: Collect items no later than 2:00pm. Things left after these times will not be secured by race officials • Only the team mate in the immediate next leg is permitted to wait inside the TA – other team mates and support crews must wait outside the fenced off enclosure. • Support crews can only enter a TA to drop off equipment but must leave immediately after doing so. You cannot help your athletes in any way inside or outside the TA. • Only competitors / support crews with the appropriate coloured wrist bands will be permitted into the TAs (wrist bands are in your registration pack) • Bikes can only be collected upon presentation of the bike collection token attached to the MTB number plate

Adventure Race cut off times

The following cut-off times will be strictly enforced • End Swim 9:25am (i.e. 55mins for 1km) • End Run 10:30am (i.e. 65mins for 6.6km) • End MTB 12:00pm (i.e. 1hour30min for 15km) • End Paddle 1:15pm (i.e. 1hour15mins for 6km)

Course marking

• The course for the MTB and Run legs (both for the adventure race and standalone races) will be marked with pink surveyor’s tape and red arrows. Red and white barrier tape will be used to block off any tracks you should not take. • You can still get lost if you don’t pay attention. Keep your eye out for trail markers at all times.

RACE RULES The following rules apply to the Augusta Adventure Race and standalone races: • Prior to being accepted into the event: • (all participants) must read and sign the Participant Indemnity (if you entered online you have already ticked off the indemnity form) • (Juniors only - i.e. under 18 on race day) • have their parent or guardian advise the organisers, Rapid Ascent, of their intention to enter • parent or guardian must read and sign an authorisation and indemnity • (paddlers only) must be competent in: • paddling craft in ocean conditions and entry and exit through surf • recognising areas of danger in the ocean such as reefs and rips • ability to self rescue in the event of capsize • (swimmers & paddlers) must be able to swim 1km unassisted in open water • Adventure race, swim and paddle races: Participants must wear race bibs provided by race organisers on the outside of their clothing at all times. • Competitors must use the same bike frame and wheels for the entire bike leg and may only receive assistance from other competitors to repair their own bike. • Competitors must use the same boat for the entire paddle leg and may only receive assistance from other competitors to repair their own boat. • No riding is permitted in the transition areas and helmets must be fastened before exiting the TA. • Any competitor who withdraws from the race MUST notify an official. This is an essential requirement to avoid unnecessary searches being conducted and emergency services being engaged. • Adventure race and MTB race: It is compulsory that basic First Aid Kits are carried by all competitors doing the run and MTB legs. First Aid Kits must consist of at least 2 x stretch bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 2 x non-adhesive wound dressings, 1 x triangular bandage and 1 pair of surgical gloves. The penalty for not carrying a First Aid Kit is 30 minutes. • All competitors must carry the listed compulsory equipment for each leg. Failure to carry any listed item will result in a 30 minute penalty per item found to be missing. • Failure to abide by rules may result in time penalty or disqualification. • All teams are permitted to lodge protests against results or decisions enforced during the event. A judging panel of three Rapid Ascent Directors will adjudicate on all protests and other contentious matters, and their decision will be final. • Rapid Ascent has sole discretion to alter or amend the race rules in order to increase the safety of participants or for any other reason deemed appropriate

ACT-BELONG-COMMIT JUNIOR SURVIVOR Also taking place on race weekend will be the awesome Act-Belong-Commit Augusta Junior Survivor. This popular adventure event is designed specifically for primary school aged kids, enabling them to be part of all the action by leading them on an off-road course filled with obstacles and fun challenges in a bush and beach environment. The start will be located on Albany Terrace just 200m from the Adventure Expo in Turner Caravan Park whilst the finish will see them running down the finish chute in the middle of the Expo. All Junior Survivors must complete registration in the Adventure Expo between 10:30am and 1:30pm on Sunday where you will receive your event t-shirt, number plate, survivor instructions and a medal when they finish.

The following categories will be recognised as part of the Standalone races. Age categories are according to your age on race day. All competitors in an age group team must be in the required age bracket. Individuals: The following categories will be recognized at each of the standalone races on Saturday: • Junior (under 18yrs) Male / Female • Prime (19 – 39yrs) Male / Female • Veteran (40 – 49yrs) Male / Female • Vintage (50 - 59yrs) Male/Female • Masters (60+ yrs) Male / Female Adventure Warrior The combined race time for those individuals competing in all 4 events on Saturday • Overall Adventure Warrior Male/Female • Junior U/18 Male/Female • Prime (18 – 39yrs) Male / Female • Veteran (40 – 49yrs) Male* / Female • Vintage (50+) Male/Female • Masters (60+) Male/Female * The Wade Kelly Memorial Trophy will be awarded to the 1st place 40-49yrs male in the Adventure Warrior category Adventure Warrior Teams The combined race time for a designated team of up to 4 athletes who compete all 4 events on Saturday (1 or more races each) • Male Team • Female Team • Mixed Team

AUGUSTA ADVENTURE RACE (ON SUNDAY)

The following categories will be recognised at the Augusta Adventure Race. Age categories are according to your age on race day. All competitors in an age group team must be in the required age bracket. Individuals Solo competitors who complete the entire course alone: • Minor U/15 Male / Female • Junior U/18 Male/Female • Prime (19 – 39yrs) Male / Female • Veteran (40 – 49yrs) Male / Female • Vintage (50 – 59yrs) Male / female • Masters (60+ yrs) Male / Female Relay Teams of 2 A relay team of two competitors who divide the course between them, either doing 2 legs each or 1 and 3 legs each. • Open team of 2 (any gender and any age) Relay Teams of 3 or 4 A relay team with either 3 or 4 competitors who divide the course between them (either doing one leg each if a team of 4 or one person doing 2 legs and the others one leg each if a team of 3) • Female Junior Team (All under 18 years) • Male Junior Team (All under 18 years) • Mixed Junior Team (All under 18 years) • Male Team • Female Team • Mixed Team • Veteran Team (All aged 40+, any gender)
