MTB EVENTS PROGRAM Saturday 23 February Forrest, VIC. 100km, 50km, 30km, 10km OtwayOdyssey.com.au

WELCOME to the Otway Odyssey MTB Marathon presented by Focus

held in conjunction with the

Great Otway Gravel Grind.

This race is without doubt one of the most iconic MTB races in Australia and holds a high reputation among thousands of people who have tackled its challenging courses. Why? Maybe it’s the quality of the single track, or the towering timber forests, the elite competitors battling up front or the atmosphere at the football ground… or maybe it's that we’re all suckers for punishment because we know the bigger the challenge the greater the reward. Either way we thank you for your support for the 13th edition of the epic race. We hope you are fit and ready to tackle the Odyssey and lucid enough at the finish line to enjoy the free beer afterward.

Otway Grommets event

This is a great event for kids to encourage them to get out on their bikes and HAVE SOME FUN!! The riding is most suited to kids on balance bikes and pedal bikes aged between approx. 3yrs and 8yrs. They will remain within the sight of parents and the course is easy and achievable. We will conduct a number of activities like slow races, limbo riding, relay events, obstacle courses and more, and is based around fun (not competition) and will take approx. 30mins. All Grommets riders must register between 12:30pm and 1:00pm for a 1:30pm event start and will get a number plate, an event sticker and a whole lot of fun.

FREE BEER AT THE FINISH!! All riders will receive a ticket for a free Forrest Brewery beer when you finish your race! Simply take your ticket to the Silver Bullet Bar on the footy ground to receive your pony sized beer and celebrate the end of a great ride. (Under age riders will receive a non-alcoholic drink).

This generous offer is made possible thanks to our friends at Topbike Tours (Emma Colson and David Olle).

p7 2019 Otway Odyssey event program

OTHER COURSE POINTS: Forrest Football Ground designated feed zone

Competitors may only receive external support from support crew within the confines of the Forrest Football Ground at the 38km and 64km points in the 100km race, the 33km point on the 50km race and 12km point for the 30km race. This area is defined as any section along the course that is within the playing surface of the Forrest Football Ground. Any riders seen to be receiving any external support outside of this designated area will be given a 30 minute penalty - this includes collecting water bottles or other hydration or nutrition from spectators as well as items that have been ‘pre-placed’ on the course for collection during the race.

Notes on course marking:

For all courses: • there will be red and white barrier tape across some trails which indicate that this is the wrong route, go back. DO NOT cross over any red and white tape. • all intersections will be clearly marked and occasional markings with tape and or arrows along tracks to confirm that you are on the right route. • one or two pieces of the relevant coloured tape will always be placed immediately after a track junction to confirm you are travelling along the correct course. • ‘Caution’ signs or signs with multiple arrows pointing down indicate that there is a difficult or technical section ahead and that you should definitely slow down and take care ahead. It is the riders' responsibility to ensure they are on the correct course for all events.

King and Queen of the Mountain (100km Otway Odyssey)

The King and Queen of the Mountain climb is limited to riders in the 100km Otway Odyssey. It is located at the top of Haydens Track at the intersection with Thompsons Track at the 26km point (approx), elevation 558m above sea level. The fastest male and female will receive $100 cash. Riders must complete the entire 100km course to be eligible.

MTB: The Timed Descent (100km, 50km, 30km Otway Odyssey)

The Timed Descent is open to riders in both the 100km, the 50km and 30km events and will be held down the renowned ‘Red Carpet Track’ from where the track crosses the Lake Elizabeth Road to where it emerges from the bush opposite the Barwon River. The descent flows over 4.5km of track that drops approximately 250m from top to bottom and was reshaped in 2016 to make it even faster. The fastest male / female down the descent will receive $100 cash.

MTB: PC wash

Together with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Parks (DELWP), we will be including a bike hygiene procedure to assist in the control of Phytophthora Cinnamomi, often called ‘die back’. All 100km, 50km and 30km riders must dismount and push their bikes through a shallow trough of Phyto-clean solution when you exit and re-enter the Forrest Football Ground.

Odyssey Angels We have been excited to roll out a range of initiatives to support and encourage greater female participation in the 2019 Otway Odyssey (or any MTB event), and we offer a special welcome to any women who are lining up for their first bike event at this years race. YOU CAN DO IT! The following services are available for all women competing in any of this year’s events and are designed to help you feel at ease with the racing ahead.

30km Otway Rookie Women’s only race start. All women tackling this event (whether first time of not) will start together at 9:35am. This should be really motivating to send all the girls off together.

Ladies Lounge – we will have set up within the expo area on the Forrest Footy Ground a women’s only ‘Ladies Lounge’ where you can meet other female riders, get changed and congregate. There will be a women’s only toilet, chairs, bag storage area as well.

Pre-race champagne and info session (FREE!) – between 6:00pm and 7:00pm on Friday night we’ll pour all female racers a glass of champagne (or soft option) in the Ladies Lounge and have a bit a chat about race day and answer any last minute questions you may have.

Odyssey Angels on course – during the 30km MTB race we will have a number of Odyssey Angel

Ambassadors at the start and out on course to give you any specific help you need – maybe fixing your bike, giving directions or simply blowing kisses... Look for the people in pink with the angel wings and angel number plates!

Odyssey Angels Facebook Group – keep tabs with all the pre-race chatter

on the specific Odyssey Angels Facebook Group and ask questions, receive advice and all the encouragement you need to make it to the start AND the finish line!

Check up with the ‘30 steps to 30km’ list on the Odyssey Angels website pages to make sure you’ve got everything covered!

Music and MCs

We will have some live music playing on the stage on Saturday between 12:00pm and 3:00pm. Combine that with MC commentary by Norm Douglas and Adam Kelsall and there is plenty to listen to at the event hub on the footy ground.

Food stalls: 10:00am – 5:00pm

There will be a wide range of stalls selling food and drinks to riders and the public.

Event bar thanks to the Forrest Brewery

The award winning local business - The Forrest Brewing Company - will be operating a thriving event bar right next to the finish line in the Football Ground and we encourage everyone to celebrate with one of their beers at the end of your ride. IN FACT.... all riders will receive a ticket for a free Forrest Brewery beer when you finish your race! Simply take your ticket to the bar to receive your pony sized beer (thanks to our friends at Topbike Tours - Emma Colson and David Olle)

Kids entertainment and activities: 10:00am – 4:00pm Sat.

Kids will have plenty of things to keep them busy whilst mum or dad are out riding and a massive jumping castle to use up all that boundless energy.

First Aid point

The Forrest Football Ground will be the central First Aid point for the event with an on site medical centre and Ambulance Victoria and trained paramedics available to help you if you’ve come unstuck. Please respect that they must give priority to the more serious cases over simple cuts and grazes.
