Welcome to the final
Augusta Adventure Fest!!! (eek!)
Welcome to the FINAL SHOWDOWN - the last ever Augusta Adventure Fest! We have all been part of some incredible experiences at the end of the road at Augusta and it is with some sadness that we declared the 2019 event to be the last one ever. THANK YOU for joining us as we say “au revoir Augusta”. The Augusta community have welcomed us with open arms each year and we express our sincere thanks for their continuing support. Thanks also to the Augusta Margaret River Shire and all other sponsors and supporters of this iconic event without whom this event would never have grown to the size it has. Despite calling the end to an era, we should all feel proud that we have helped shape a township, a culture and a whole lot of active kids through your participation in this epic event. So why close it down...? we thought it was time for a change, to make new plans for new adventures and invest our enthusiasm into something new. Standby for a massive announcement at 5:00pm on Saturday 2nd November in the event centre! Meanwhile, let’s make the most of this year, race with extra might and determination, but also with an added eye on the surroundings to take it all in one last time. See you in Augusta over 2nd and 3rd November 2019. The Rapid Ascent team
WELCOME MESSAGE FROM HON PAUL PAPALIA CSC MLA, MINISTER FOR TOURISM AND HON ALANNAH MACTIERNAN MLC, MINISTER FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT The McGowan Government is a proud sponsor of Augusta Adventure Fest through Tourism WA’s Regional Events Program. The program supports medium to large regional events across the State to boost tourism, increase community vibrancy and participation, and develop regional areas. The Regional Events Program plays an important role in positioning Western Australia as an exciting destination to visit and a great place to live by showcasing and promoting a region’s unique and diverse attractions. Tourism is a key part of the Government’s plan to diversify the economy, create jobs and develop business opportunities, especially in regional Western Australia. Events play an important role in this plan with the Government sponsoring a range of sporting, cultural, arts and culinary events across the State, through Tourism WA, to attract more visitors, encourage them to stay longer, disperse further and do more while they are here. We hope everyone enjoys the event and takes the time to explore the Margaret River region.

TRAFFIC & PARKING NOTES
Notes and recommendations to avoid the traffic during race weekend: • Albany Tce will be closed to all cars from 4:00pm on Friday afternoon through to 4:00pm on Sunday afternoon. The only exception being between 7:00am and 8:30am on Saturday and 6:00am and 7:30am Sunday so paddlers can drop their boat into the transition area. • We encourage all runners in Sunday’s adventure race to catch the bus to the start line at Cape Leeuwin rather than drive as there is VERY LIMITED car parking out at the road end. • Be aware of mountain bikers and runners crossing the Cape Leeuwin Rd. Traffic management personnel will be in place to direct cars but please allow a little extra time when these events are under way. • For competitors in Sunday’s Adventure Race - we recommend dropping off your kayak on Saturday (after 5:00pm) so it is one less thing to do on Sunday morning. We recommend all other gear is dropped off on Sunday morning.
It’s beer at it’s finest. Fun, thrills, adventure and refreshing alcoholic beverages await you in this exciting wonderland of Cheeky Monkey’s most daring imagination: The Cheeky Monkey Brewing Co. CHEEKY MONKEY MINI ADVENTURE RACE - COURSE DESCRIPTION Race start, 10:30am Saturday 2nd November:
The start is located on the beach, adjacent to Sam Griffiths Reserve on Albany Terrace. This is approximately 2km south of the Turner Caravan Park.
1KM OCEAN SWIM
Swimmers start on the beach and run into the water to swim out approx. 50m before turning left around the first cone buoy. Continue swimming inside the reef, parallel to the beach passing a second cone buoy on your left and then turn left around the third and final cone buoy to swim into the beach at the blue Rapid Ascent flags. After exiting the water run into the T1 transition area and teams hand over to your team mate or individuals change into run gear and keep going. Swimmers must: • Wear the Funky Trunks swim caps - YELLOW for individuals and BLUE for teams (provided at registration) • Remain in the water and cannot run along the beach at any point until they have rounded the last pink buoy • Transition inside the fenced off transition area on the beach • Arrange for your support crew or team mates to collect your swim gear after you have left. Do not just leave your wetsuit on the sand
6.5KM TRAIL RUN
Runners exit T1 and head south, remaining on the beach and rocky foreshore all the way past Flinders Bay to a turn around point at the Augusta Boat Harbour. Runners return from the boat harbour on the new concrete footpath, and continue along some scenic bushland trails and quiet urban streets, heading north before arriving at T2 on Albany Tce. Run into the transition area at the northern end of th ecompound and find your bike and/or your team mate and continue. Runners must: • Carry a first aid kit comprising no less than 2 x crepe bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 1 x triangular bandage, 2 x non-stick wound dressing pads and a pair of surgical gloves • WATCH FOR CARS on any street or dirt road sections - normal road rules apply at all times • Transition with their team rider (or individuals get changed) next to their MTB within the designated Transition Area
15KM MOUNTAIN BIKE
Mountain bikers start riding on Albany Tce then turn right into Chaudiere Pl then Osnaburg St before crossing over Leeuwin Rd (follow traffic management personnel instructions) and head into the flowing 4WD and single tracks in the hinterland. The course makes a number of turns and riders should take great care to ensure you are always following the course markings and do not get lost in the myriad of trails. Towards the end of the course riders go along the length of the airstrip before crossing back over Leeuwin Rd and descending back to T2 on Albany Terrace. Return your bike to the same location you collected it and continue into the kayaking TA. Riders must: • Carry a first aid kit comprising no less than 2 x crepe bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 1 x triangular bandage, 2 x non-stick wound dressing pads and a pair of surgical gloves • Wear a certified bike helmet to AUS/NZ/US standard • WATCH FOR CARS on any street or dirt road sections - normal road rules apply at all times Swim to Paddle transition 2 (T2) – Colourpatch • Team paddlers must stay in the fenced off transition area next to their boat - do not crowd around the timing gate. • Boats must be placed in the designated area according to your race number as indicated by the signage in the TA.
6KM INLET PADDLE
Once started, paddlers head upstream (north) on the inlet for approx 2.6km to the turn around point at 3 buoys located just past the last of the Augusta riverfront houses. We recommend going to the left (west) of the large sandbar infront of the TA). Do a U-turn at the 3 buoys and paddle back down the Inlet to a final right turn buoy just in front of the rivermouth cutting and then return your boat to the grass at the Colourpatch transition area on Albany Tce. Land your boat and then exit the TA at the western end (where team mates will meet up with paddlers).
Adventure Race COURSE MAP
Paddlers must: • Wear a type 2 or 3 PFD at all times • Be aware of the buoys marking the course as indicated on the map – it is up to you to make sure you know where to go • Store your boat in the appropriate TA zone that match your race number before AND after your paddle. • Individuals must set up your paddle gear (paddle, PFD and other items) next to your boat - not in the bike TA • Note: flares and helmets are not required for the MINI paddle Some changes may be made to the course pending weather conditions on the day.
200M TEAM RUN
Team mates are encouraged to join their paddler for a final 200m sprint from the TA to the finish line in Turner Caravan Park. Please wait outside the fenced off TA at the exit (nearest the Turner Caravan Park) and meet up with your team there and bring it home together. Well Done!!

AUGUSTA ADVENTURE RACE - COURSE DESCRIPTION Race start, 8:00am Sunday 3rd November:
The start is located at the base of the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. We strongly recommend all runners travel to the start line on the buses due to limited parking space at the lighthouse. • 7:00am Competitor buses depart for the start line - Turner Caravan park reception • 7:25am Spectator buses depart for the start line - Turner Caravan park reception
12.5KM COASTAL RUN
The race kicks into action in surely one of the most spectacular start lines possible – with all runners gathered on a massive rock slab under the iconic Cape Leeuwin lighthouse. Surrounded by the power of the Southern and Indian Oceans and cheered on by a thousand spectators, this start line is something to behold! Runners start by heading up the rugged West Coast in a rock running frenzy before turning right at the Water Wheel and across the road and to join the southern coastline. Continue along the coastline around several headlands, through the new marina before crossing Leeuwin Rd at Flinders Bay where runners complete a short trail loop inland. Cross back over the road and then continue into the transition area at Flinders Bay. Runners must: • Carry a first aid kit comprising no less than 2 x crepe bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 1 x triangular bandage, 2 x non-stick wound dressing pads and a pair of surgical gloves • WATCH FOR CARS on any street or dirt road sections - normal road rules apply at all times • Transition with their team swimmer (or individuals get changed) within the designated Transition Area at Flinders Bay
2KM OCEAN SWIM (+800M RUN)
Swimmers enter the water and swim directly out to sea, passing between two cone buoys, a short distance off the end of the pier. Continue swimming perpendicular to the beach then turn left around a cone buoy, to then swim across an open section of water aiming for a second set of 2 cone buoys located between the reef and the beach. Pass through the 2 buoys and continue swimming on the shore side of the reef. Swim past one cone buoy keeping it on your left and then turn left around a second cone buoy to swim in to shore, aiming for a blue Rapid Ascent flag on the beach where you exit the water. Once out of the water, all competitors run 800m through the obvious river cutting, remaining at water level all the way through to the T2 transition area on the river. Swimmers must: • Wear the Funky Trunks swim caps - PURPLE for individuals, RED for teams and PINK for pairs (provided at registration)
• Remain in the water and cannot run along the beach at any point until they have rounded the last buoy • Complete the 800m run component to T2 by themselves and cannot transition with their team mate or receive any assistance until inside the TA. Note: this run can be done in bare feet • Must drop their swim gear into TA at Flinder’s Bay after 6:00am on Sunday (this transition is not open on Saturday) Swim to Paddle transition 2 (T2) – Colourpatch • Team paddlers must stay in the fenced off transition area next to their boat - do not crowd around the timing gate • Boats must be placed in the designated area according to your race number as indicated by the signage in the TA
12.5KM INLET AND OCEAN PADDLE
Paddlers enter the water and must turn right around a buoy located immediately in front of the TA and then proceed out through the river cutting / river mouth to enter the ocean. Paddlers must then turn right around a buoy located approx 200m off the river mouth and then continue south, passing through a ‘gate’ of 2 buoys located approx 500m offshore from the Flinders Bay boat ramp. Paddlers continue south remaining close to the shore, going past the new marina before doing a U-turn around a cone buoy located 50m off the shore at ‘Dead Finish’ opposite a small jetty. Paddlers then reverse the course exactly, going back through the ‘gate’ of 2 boys in the middle of Flinders Bay and then keep the buoy at the river mouth on your left before a final left hand turn around the buoy in front of the Colourpatch TA and then back in to shore. Paddlers must put their boats in the same zone where they started on the grass and then run through to the bike TA to meet your MTB team mate. Paddlers must: • Wear a type 2 or 3 PFD at all times AND a helmet at all times during the paddle leg. • Carry a current, orange smoke flare attached to their body at all times during the paddle leg. • Carry a splash cover/spray skirt for people using a sit-in kayak • Be aware of the buoys marking the course as indicated on the map and in the description above. It is up to you to make sure you know where to go. • Store your boat in the appropriate TA zone that match your race number before AND after your paddle. • Individuals must set up your paddle gear (paddle, PFD and other items) next to your boat - not in the bike TA Some changes may be made to the course pending weather conditions on the day.
MOUNTAIN BIKE 28KM
Mountain bikers start riding along Albany Tce and turn right into Chaudiere Pl then Osnaburg Street, cross over Leeuwin Rd and then keep left to follow the marked course through the hinterland. Continue up the sandy climb past the Telstra Tower and then turn left onto Hillview Rd. Race down the hill on Green Hill Rd and keep following the course markings as you turn on and off a fun mix of sealed roads, gravel paths and single track. Ride down the full length of the airstrip and then cross back over Leeuwin Rd and then descend into the transition area with a smile. Rack your bike back in the same spot in the TA and continue through to the finish line, meeting your team mates before the final spint down the chute to glory! Riders must: • Carry a first aid kit comprising no less than 2 x crepe bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 1 x triangular bandage, 2 x non-stick wound dressing pads and a pair of surgical gloves • Wear a certified bike helmet to AUS/NZ/US standard • WATCH FOR CARS on any street or dirt road sections - normal road rules apply at all times
TEAM RUN 400M
All team members must unite with your team rider outside the bike and kayak transition areas and complete the final 200m of the team run to the finish line together. A photo of your team will be taken as you cross the finish line. If you do not have a team uniform we encourage you to wear your race shirts given to you at registration. CONGRATULATIONS you have just finished the final Augusta Adventure Race.

COURSE MANAGEMENT Transition areas and support crews:
Support crews are not mandatory. They can make logistics a bit easier but they will have virtually no impact on your overall placing if you are organised before the event. The following guidelines are in place for all transition areas • No external support may be provided to competitors inside the fenced off TA enclosure (or out on the course). Support crews can only enter a TA to drop off equipment for their competitor but must leave the TA immediately after doing so. The only exception is that competitors can receive assistance to pull down race bibs (especially over PFDs) from other competitors or from spectators who are located outside the TA fence. • Only the team mate in the immediate next leg is permitted to wait inside the TA – other team mates and support crews must wait outside the fenced off enclosure. • Bikes can only be collected upon presentation of the bike collection token attached to the MTB number plate • Boats / kayaks can only be collected upon presentation of the kayak collection token attached to the Kayak Sticker provided at registration
Course marking
• The course for the MTB and Run legs (both for the MINI and the Augusta adventure races) will be marked with pink surveyor’s tape and red arrows. Red and white barrier tape will be used to block off any tracks you should not take. • You can still get lost if you don’t pay attention. Keep your eye out for trail markers at all times.
RACE RULES The event may be competed by relay teams with up to 4 members doing one leg each or individuals doing the entire race: • Teams: must transfer the numbered lycra race bib and electronic timing chip from one team mate to the next. These are your ‘relay batons’ and are provided at registration. • Individuals: must wear the numbered lycra race bib and electronic timing chip for the duration of the race. The following rules apply to the Augusta Adventure Race and MINI: • Prior to being accepted into the event: • (all participants) must read and sign the Participant Indemnity (if you entered online you have already ticked off the indemnity form) • (Juniors only - i.e. under 18 on race day) • have their parent or guardian advise the organisers, Rapid Ascent, of their intention to enter • parent or guardian must read and sign an authorisation and indemnity • (paddlers only) must be competent in: • paddling craft in ocean conditions and entry and exit through surf • recognising areas of danger in the ocean such as reefs and rips • ability to self rescue in the event of capsize • (swimmers & paddlers) must be able to swim 1km unassisted in open water • Participants must wear the numbered race bibs provided by race organisers on the outside of their clothing at all times whilst racing. • Competitors must use the same bike frame and wheels for the entire bike leg and may only receive assistance from other competitors to repair their own bike. • Competitors must use the same boat for the entire paddle leg and may only receive assistance from other competitors to repair their own boat. • No riding is permitted in the transition areas and helmets must be fastened before exiting the TA. • Any competitor who withdraws from the race MUST notify an official. This is an essential requirement to avoid unnecessary searches being conducted and emergency services being engaged. • It is compulsory that basic First Aid Kits are carried by all competitors doing the run and MTB legs. First Aid Kits must consist of at least 2 x stretch bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 2 x non-adhesive wound dressings, 1 x triangular bandage and 1 pair of surgical gloves. The penalty for not carrying a First Aid Kit is 30 minutes. • All competitors must carry the listed compulsory equipment for each leg. Failure to carry any listed item will result in a 30 minute penalty per item found to be missing. • Failure to abide by rules may result in time penalty or disqualification. • All teams are permitted to lodge protests against results or decisions enforced during the event. A judging panel of three Rapid Ascent Directors will adjudicate on all protests and other contentious matters, and their decision will be final. • Rapid Ascent has sole discretion to alter or amend the race rules in order to increase the safety of participants or for any other reason deemed appropriate
