WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR
Welcome to the 2019 Surf Coast Century.
No matter what distance you’re covering, to reach the start line of this event is a great achievement. To reach the finish line is even greater. I applaud your dedication & determination, and hope you clock the time you’ve dreamt of. You are part of an eventful couple of days in Anglesea. This weekend also sees the town hosting the annual ANGAIR Wildflower and Art Weekend, featuring a spectacular display of indigenous flowers and nature-themed art and craft. You’re welcome to attend the event at Anglesea Memorial Hall or perhaps you’ll be lucky to spot a local beauty – like the delicate Creamy Candles wildflower – as you power through our stunning Anglesea Heath. This weekend is also a rare opportunity to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Great Ocean Road construction. The Story of the Road will be told through pop-up cinemas (including one in Anglesea this weekend), public art installations and an augmented reality trail accessed via your phone. Visit their website for details and locations. Surf Coast Shire Council is proud to support the Surf Coast Century through our Event Grants Program. We welcome both competitors and supporters to the Surf Coast Shire at any time of the year. If you’re looking for another adventure, our calendar is jam-packed with major and local events. If you’re seeking a relaxing getaway, the Surf Coast is the perfect place to unwind. All the best for the Surf Coast Century – enjoy the challenge. Cr Rose Hodge Mayor - Surf Coast Shire Council

THE COURSE Course Markings Trail running events are quite different to road running. We will not have marshals at every junction and it is up to the runner to KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR AND FOLLOW THE COURSE MARKINGS to make your way along the course. Courses will be marked with: • RED and/or ORANGE ARROWS (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees or bushes) • FLUORO PINK or RED PLASTIC surveyor’s tape and reflective tags (tied to trees or bushes) • ‘wrong way’ is indicated by RED and WHITE barrier tape across a track / road at ground level. Do NOT cross red and white tape. • In the DARK: Sections of the course will also be marked with SILVER and / or RED reflective tape tied to trees, as well as (infrequent) reflective arrows. Course GPS file and FREE mapping app A GPS file of the full 100km Surf Coast Century course can be downloaded from the event website. We strongly encourage all runners (and support crews) to set up your telephone (or GPS watch) with the free mapping app ‘Maps.ME’ and import the course GPS file so you can easily refer to it if you are concerned about following the track or get lost. This is free and easy to set up and does not require phone reception. There are clear instructions for how to set up your phone with the maps here: https://tinyurl.com/y7bgfh2v

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Great Ocean Road Real Estate Leg 1: 0km – 21km
(100km runners only) Distance: 21km Elevation gain / loss: 105m Terrain style: Along the beach and inter tidal zone with some technical terrain over reefs and rocks. It is basically flat from start to finish. You WILL get wet feet and there may be some pools you have to negotiate that can be waist/chest deep. Leg start point: Race Start (Anglesea Main Beach) Leg finish point: CP2 at Torquay Surf Beach Rotary Rotunda Check Points: An intermediary race kitchen at CP1 (10km) Cut off: all runners must have departed CP2 by 11:15am 100km Start Procedure: All 100km runners start on the beach facing west and commence with a 4km loop going up and past the Surf Life Saving Club and along Surf Coast Walk to Point Roadknight, then back along the beach past the start line and on towards CP1 and CP 2 in Torquay. Detour contingency: Depending on swell and beach conditions on race day runners may be detoured onto the cliff top tracks between “Steps/Boobs” stairs (~17km pt) and the north side of Rocky Pt (~20km pt). This detour may be activated during the event, so earlier runners may stay on the beach whilst later runners may take the detour, but both routes are the same length. Detours will be clearly marked and supervised by race officials.
Surf Coast Shire Leg 2: 21km – 49km (100km runners only) Distance: 28km Elevation gain / loss: 520m / 520m Terrain style: A mixture of gravel footpaths and narrow single track through the bush. Whilst not exactly hilly, this section is best described as undulating. Leg start point: CP2 at Torquay Surf Beach Rotary Rotunda Leg finish point: CP4 at Anglesea Green Check Points: An intermediary race kitchen at CP3 (32km pt), and an unmanned water station CP3A (42km pt). Cut off: all runners must have departed CP4 by 4:15pm Note: runners must stop and wash the soles of your shoes at the 3 x PC Wash locations on Leg 2. This is a mandatory shoe hygiene procedure to assist in the control of ‘Die Back’ or Phytophthora. Please use the Parks Victoria provided wash station.
La Sportiva Leg 3:
49km – 77km (100km runners) / 0km – 28km (50km runners) Distance: 28km Elevation gain / loss: 760m / 720m Terrain style: A mixture of 2WD, 4WD and single tracks through more remote sections of the coastal bushland (with extensive wildflowers all around). This is the hilliest leg of the race and the crux of the course. SPECTATORS AND SPECTATORS CREWS Athlete Tracking
The RACE MAP App allows runners to track your position in real time so support crews and team members can watch your progress. Support crews can watch the race online here: https://tinyurl.com/yyvhzvw3 Instructions for runners: • Download the app ‘RACE MAP’ from your app store • Select the ‘Surf Coast Century’ event from the future events list • Enter your name and race number • ‘Start Live Tracking’ when you are racing – then your supports can track you during the race We will also send runners an e-mail prior to the event with instructions how to register on the app – you can either follow these links or the instructions above. NOTE: The RACE MAP App does drain your phone battery more than normal. Modern phones should last ~8hrs but keep an eye on it and consider carrying a separate power bank and/or activating tracking for selected periods only. Instructions for spectators: • Download the app ‘RACE MAP’ from your app store • Select the ‘Surf Coast Century’ event from the future events list and simply watch the dots! • The map can also be seen online here: https://tinyurl.com/yyvhzvw3
