It’s here – it’s finally here... ...the 2021 Surf Coast Century is about to happen! After all that we’ve been through as a community (for the second year in a row) we struggle to express how excited we are that the 10th edition of the Surf Coast Century is going to happen, that your training will be rewarded and dreams realised with another spectacular run on the Surf Coast. Training for an ultra marathon requires a massive commitment even in the best of times, so to maintain your focus after the race date was changed twice is truly exceptional. We sincerely praise and acknowledge the solo runners who’ve kept at it for another 11 weeks after the race was initially scheduled and salute you as an ultra runner of significant grit and determination. All we can say is that - your efforts will be rewarded! All 4 legs of the Surf Coast Century course deliver big time in terms of scenery, journey, variety, challenge and reward – link them together into a 50km or 100km solo run and you are in for an incredible day. Combine that with the passion and enthusiasm of team mates, support crews, volunteers and the local community and your 2021 Surf Coast Century will be a day you’ll never forget. Well done on making it to the start line – we’ll be there to help get you to the finish line. Rapid Ascent Event Manager: Sam Maffett 0400 001 786. Race Director: John Jacoby 0408 035 261

Welcome from The Mayor Welcome to the 2021 Surf Coast Century. Now in its 10th year, this event has grown to become one of Australia’s must-do ultra trail marathons – and one of very few on offer in 2021. After being postponed twice, I’m so happy it is finally happening, and applaud local company Rapid Ascent for all their hard work and persistence, which has paid off. The gruelling 50km and 100km courses take in some of the Surf Coast’s most spectacular scenery, so it’s a wonderful opportunity for runners to set and smash some big goals! The Surf Coast Century has long been a hallmark event for our region and our Council is pleased to again provide funding support. Events like this not only promote health and fitness, they connect people with nature, their passion and with others. They do wonders for our mental health. Events will play a critical role in our region’s COVID recovery, not just in an economic sense, but also in reconnecting us. If you’re looking for your next adventure, go to surfcoastevents.com.au for everything that’s happening on the Surf Coast. Wishing you all the best for the event. Cr Libby Stapleton Mayor, Surf Coast Shire Council

12HR PACE GROUP FOR 100KM RUNNERS (NEW) David Eadie will be leading a pace group around the 100km course to help guide runners to finish under 12hrs (and earn a large stein). David is a coaching ambassador of the event (he won it in 2014) and is renowned for his even pacing strategy and racing experience over many years. If you join David’s pace group you can expect a very relaxed early pace, lots of strategic walking (including all the major hills), a maximum of 5 mins at each aid stations, some laughs and most importantly a fun day out. Often a small group of runners can work together to motivate each other and lift the spirts of those having a little flat patch. Anyone can join David’s page group - simply find him at the start line or along the course and keep running with him. His planned splits around the course are: Leg 1, 21km: 2.05 Hrs // Leg 2, 27km: 3.05 Hrs // Leg 3, 27km: 3.45 Hrs // Leg 4, 24km: 3.00 Hrs

THE COURSE Course Markings It is up to the runner to KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR AND FOLLOW THE COURSE MARKINGS as described below. The course will be marked with: • RED and/or ORANGE ARROWS (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees or bushes) • FLUORO PINK or RED PLASTIC surveyor’s tape and reflective tags (tied to trees or bushes) • ‘wrong way’ is indicated by RED and WHITE barrier tape across a track / road at ground level. Do NOT cross red and white tape. • In the DARK: Sections of the course will also be marked with SILVER and / or RED reflective tape tied to trees, as well as (infrequent) reflective arrows. Course GPS file and FREE mapping app We strongly encourage all runners (and support crews) to set up your telephone with the free mapping app ‘Maps. ME’ or ‘GuruMaps’ and import the course GPS file so you can easily refer to it if you are concerned about following the track or becoming lost. Instructions for how to set up your phone with the maps: https://tinyurl.com/ja6tpz2e

COURSE DESCRIPTION - SUMMARY A more detailed explanation of each leg is published on the event website Course Description page.

Great Ocean Road Real Estate Leg 1: 0km – 21km

(100km runners only) Distance: 21km Elevation gain / loss: 105m Terrain style: Along the beach and inter tidal zone with some technical terrain over reefs and rocks. It is predominantly flat from start to finish. You WILL get wet and should expect to cross a couple of pools up to knee waist deep. Leg start point: Race Start (Anglesea Main Beach) Leg finish point: CP2 at Torquay Surf Beach Rotary Rotunda Check Points: An intermediary race kitchen at CP1 (10km) Cut off: all runners must have departed CP2 by 9:15am 100km Start Procedure: All 100km solo and leg 1 team runners start together on Anglesea Main Beach facing west and complete a 4km loop going up past the Surf Life Saving Club, along Surf Coast Walk to Point Roadknight and back along the beach past the start. Deviation: Shortly after passing the start runners turn left to follow the Surf Coast Walk that parallels the cliff edge through to the Red Rocks headland and rejoin the ‘original’ course at the 8.6km point. This deviation avoids the closed section of beach below Demons Bluff which is deemed unsafe due to possible cliff collapses. Detour contingency: Depending on swell and beach conditions on race day runners may be detoured onto the cliff top tracks between “Steps/Boobs” stairs (~17km pt) and the north side of Rocky Pt (~20km pt). This detour may be activated during the event, so earlier runners may stay on the beach whilst later runners may take the detour, but both routes are the same length. Detours will be clearly marked and supervised by race officials.

Tailwind Leg 2: 21km – 48km (100km runners only) Distance: 27km Elevation gain / loss: 520m / 520m Terrain style: A mixture of gravel footpaths and narrow single track through the bush. Whilst not exactly hilly, this section is best described as undulating. Leg start point: CP2 at Torquay Surf Beach Rotary Rotunda Leg finish point: CP4 at Anglesea Green Check Points: An intermediary race kitchen at CP3 (31km pt), and an unmanned water station CP3A (40km pt). Cut off: all runners must have departed CP4 by 2:15pm Note: runners must stop and wash the soles of your shoes at the 3 x PC Wash locations on Leg 2. This is a mandatory shoe hygiene procedure to assist in the control of ‘Die Back’ or Phytophthora. Please use the Parks Victoria provided wash station.

La Sportiva Leg 3:

48km – 75km (100km runners) / 0km – 27km (50km runners) Distance: 27km Elevation gain / loss: 760m / 720m Terrain style: A mixture of 2WD, 4WD and single tracks through more remote sections of the coastal bushland (with extensive wildflowers all around). This is the hilliest leg of the race and the crux of the course. Leg start point: CP4 at Anglesea Green Leg finish point: CP6 at Moggs Creek Picnic Ground Check Points: Unmanned water point CP4A (58km/8km pt) and intermediary race kitchen at CP5 (68km/19km pt) Cut off: all runners must have departed CP6 by 8:00pm Great Ocean Road (GOR) Bridge: all 100km runners must go under the GOR bridge at the 48.5km mark. 50km runners ONLY may go over the road. 50km start procedure: all 50km runners start on the beach facing west, and run 500m down the beach towards the Surf Life Saving Club, and do a U-turn around the flag then come back past the Start Line and on to the gravel footpath on the NORTH side of the Anglesea River to continue on towards CP5 and beyond. 50km runners will go over the Great Ocean Road (not under the bridge) at the 2km pt.
