RUNNING MAN u

Running 100km or 50km as a solo, or a leg in a relay team, is no easy undertaking. It’s a long way, with discomfort, hardship and tiredness all assured on the day. But the greater the challenge = the bigger the reward. We guarantee that by making it to the finish line (or at least having a good attempt at it) then all your pain and sacrifices will be forgotten and you’ll be riding high on a wave of euphoria soon afterwards. Do all this on a spectacular course that leads you through wildflower hinterland, along clifftop trails and down remote sandy beaches and this will be a day you’ll never forget.

12HR PACE GROUP FOR 100KM RUNNERS

David Eadie will be pacing himself around the 100km course in 11.55 hrs and encourages runners to join him to achieve a sub 12 hr finish (and earn a large stein). David is a coaching ambassador of the event (he won it in 2014) and is renowned for his even pacing strategy and racing experience over many years. If you join David’s pace group you can expect a very relaxed early pace, lots of strategic walking (including all the major hills), a maximum of 5 mins at each aid stations, some laughs and most importantly a fun day out. Often a small group of runners can work together to motivate each other and lift the spirts of those having a little flat patch. Anyone can join David’s page group - simply find him at the start line or along the course and keep running with him. His planned splits around the course are: Leg 1, 21km: 2.10 Hrs // Leg 2, 27km: 3.05 Hrs // Leg 3, 27km: 3.40 Hrs // Leg 4, 24km: 3.00 Hrs

Leg start point: Race Start (Anglesea Main Beach)

Tailwind Leg 2: 21km – 48km (100km runners only)

Detour contingency: Depending on swell and beach conditions on race day runners may be detoured onto the cliff top tracks between “Steps/Boobs” stairs (~17km pt) and the north side of Rocky Pt (~20km pt). This detour may be activated during the event if the waves are high so earlier runners may stay on the beach whilst later runners may take the detour, but both routes are the same length. Detours will be clearly marked with blue arrows.

Flora and fauna information on the course: Keep an eye out for the signs The Friends of the Eastern Otways have set up along the course to explain more about the area you’re running through and/or see if you can spot some of these local species during your run!:

You’re running through a Biodiversity Hotspot! Bluebeard Creeping Bossiaea Waxlip Orchid AngleseaOrchidCaladenia AngleseaOrchidBearded Large Spider Orchid Red Browed Finch Striated Pardalote King Parrot

PC lives in soil and can be transported to new areas on the soles of our running shoes. So here are a few rules to help prevent it’s spread:

The FEO are really pleased to be a part of the Surf Coast Century this year with a number of their members volunteering on the day to help out. They’ve also placed a number of signs out on the course to help showcase some of the rarest and more radical plants and animals you may well see while you run! We hope this enriches your experience and connection to this truly special part of Australia.

• Make sure your shoes are free of dirt before you start your race and wash thoroughly after you finish.

PC is a deadly fungal infection that causes dieback in plants – and runners help it spread! It attacks plant and root systems causing them to die from lack of nutrients and water. This impacts our native fauna who call these areas home and may impact runners by causing popular tracks and areas to be closed.

Information about the course landscape from our environmental partner: The Friends of the Eastern Otways.

• Stay on the tracks! If you leave the track you’re more likely to walk through a diseased area and spread it.

The Surf Coast is without a doubt one of the most picturesque areas in Victoria for trail running, but it also has an incredible number of plants and animals that call it home. A quarter of all the plants in Victoria are found here, with endangered birds and mammals too. It is an important and special environment.

Page 15

The Friends of Eastern Otways (FEO) volunteer to look after this region, they remove weeds and plant species that are not supposed to grow here. They also explore and document this amazing biodiversity by placing camera traps throughout the park and seeing what shows up to have their photo taken!

What can you do to help protect the local environment: Treat Phytophthora Cinnamomi seriously!! (PC or better known as Cinnamon Fungus or dieback).

• Where available, use shoe cleaning stations – they are there for a reason! Or keep a hand spray bottle with a mix of methylated spirits and water in your car and spray your shoes before / after each run.

• Don’t remove plants or soil from parks – not only does it help spread the fungus but it’s also against the law!
