Welcome to the 2023 Surf Coast Century!
There is nothing like a long run in the wilderness, escaping the pressures of life and spending time with yourself, with friends and with nature. It makes you feel good and ads vigour to your life.
Tap into the enthusiasm of others at checkpoints and around the course and you get an added spring to your step with extra energy to reach the finish line. And finally, combine that with a course offering plenty of variety where no two footsteps are the same - running down beaches, past waterfalls and along cliff top tracks - and you start to feel pretty good about life. All these features and many more are part of the Surf Coast Century and that is why it’s referred to as THE FEEL GOOD ULTRA MARATHON.
We look forward to sharing this perfect day experience with you as part of your 2023 Surf Coast Century. Whether you are running 100km or 50km solo, or part of a relay team achieving goals together, this is a special event and we are sure you’ll have a magical experience on our coastline.
Welcome to the Feel good ultra marathon...
Rapid Ascent
Event Manager: Sam Maffett 0400 001 786. Race Director: John Jacoby 0408 035 261
Welcome from The Mayor
We’re so happy to welcome the Surf Coast Century back in 2023.
We’re all about nature and active lifestyles here on the Surf Coast, so this event is a perfect fit for our region. We love the ‘feel good’ vibe the event brings, with its focus on inclusivity and encouragement.
The 100km and 50km ultra marathons are truly spectacular, taking in stunning coastline, the world-famous Bells Beach, the sheltered forest of the Ironbark Basin and the tranquil Currawong falls.
Spring is a fantastic time to take in the beauty with the wildflowers in bloom, and all sorts of rare Orchids to see. This is nature at its finest and I can’t think of a more picturesque running route.
Well done to Rapid Ascent on the 12th edition of this much-loved event. Surf Coast Shire Council is delighted to provide funding through our Event Grants Program.
To the runners, I have a lot of admiration for all of you. Ultra marathons take incredible physical and mental fortitude. Your determination and perseverance inspires us all and I wish you the very best.
If you or your support crews get the chance to get out and about after the event, there’s plenty happening over the weekend.
The Angair Wildflower and Art Weekend is on in Anglesea and the Rip Curl Grom Search is taking place in Jan Juc, where you can see surfing’s up and coming stars. Then on Sunday, I recommend a wander around the popular Torquay Cowrie Market on the Esplanade.

You can also export a GPX file of the course route from the app to use in other applications.
Could you be a Foster Carer?
Every day at Meli, we receive more referrals for foster care than we have available carers. This means that every night there are children in our local community who do not have a place to call home. You can make a difference.
Find out more about foster care or donate now to support children and families in our region.

Information about the course landscape from our environmental partner: The Friends of the Eastern Otways.
You’re running through a Biodiversity Hotspot!
The Surf Coast is without a doubt one of the most picturesque areas in Victoria for trail running, but it also has an incredible number of plants and animals that call it home. A quarter of all the plants in Victoria are found here, with endangered birds and mammals too. It is an important and special environment.
The Friends of Eastern Otways (FEO) volunteer to look after this region, they remove weeds and plant species that are not supposed to grow here. They also explore and document this amazing biodiversity by placing camera traps throughout the park and seeing what shows up to have their photo taken!
The FEO are pleased to continue their partnership with the Surf Coast Century with a number of their members volunteering on the day to help out. They’ve also shared some terrific environmental notes that are included in the Capra maps ap and have placed signs on the course to help showcase some of the rarest and more radical plants and animals you may well see whilst running! We hope this enriches your experience and connection to this truly special part of Australia.
What can you do to help protect the local environment: Treat Phytophthora Cinnamomi seriously!! (PC or better known as Cinnamon Fungus or dieback).
PC is a deadly fungal infection that causes dieback in plants – and runners help it spread! It attacks plant and root systems causing them to die from lack of nutrients and water. This impacts our native fauna who call these areas home and may impact runners by causing popular tracks and areas to be closed.
PC lives in soil and can be transported to new areas on the soles of our running shoes. So here are a few rules to help prevent it’s spread:
• Make sure your shoes are free of dirt before you start your race and wash thoroughly after you finish.
• Where available, use shoe cleaning stations – they are there for a reason! Or keep a hand spray bottle with a mix of methylated spirits and water in your car and spray your shoes before / after each run.
• Stay on the tracks! If you leave the track you’re more likely to walk through a diseased area and spread it.
• Don’t remove plants or soil from parks – not only does it help spread the fungus but it’s also against the law!
Flora and fauna information on the course: Keep an eye out for the signs The Friends of the Eastern Otways have set up along the course to explain more about the area you’re running through and/or see if you can spot some of these local species during your run!:
