Aim

THE PROJECT

WAVES – WAter management & Values for European Students - project involves 9 European schools from all parts of Europe (Greece, Germany, Belgium, Hungary, Cyprus, Turkey, Poland, Portugal and Spain) who work together to discover the importance of water and its management as well as the European values it implies for students as future citizens.

Why Water has always been an issue in the world and now it has become a worldwide concern. Resources are being reviewed under the circumstances of the greenhouse effect and the draught it causes to various areas on Earth. Moreover, the war on water has moved to the level of proper, sensible and free use for all. For these reasons, it becomes imperative that students all over Europe should be well informed as future citizens on the rational and sensible use and management of the water resources they have close by. With this scope, the project aims at motivating young people to think and act in a more mature, rational, knowledgeable and collective way.

WHAT WE DID – ACTIVITIES AT SCHOOLS The rain effect

We started each meeting with the rain effect show, using our hands and feet to produce the sound. All the schools were taught it and it became a ritual for every meeting opening event.

Two facebook profiles Social media was used for direct communication. Two facebook profiles were created: one for the teachers and one for the students, both monitored and observed by the coordinators. In this way, we could post all information relevant to the project and we could contact each other prior to the meetings, getting to know each other, families as well.

School WAVES corner In each school, a WAVES corner was created, enriched after each meeting with new objects and pictures.

The rain gauge We installed rain gauges in every partner school, starting measuring rain precipitation for the two project years in every partner country. There were, of course, differences among the southern and drier countries and the wetter ones.

37

COMENIUS WAVES 2012-14 {Water Management & values for European Students}

Country boards In Germany we filled in boards with students’ views of each partner country and took them back home. Ice cube We built a cube out of blocks of ice in Germany.

Collage posters In Belgium we made collages for our countries.

Water dance and performance on water The Cypriots danced the traditional dances of water and the Spanish performed music with their hands.

38

Theatrical short play The Greeks presented the history of their water resource in a short play in English (ANNEX I). Rap song on water & poems The Polish team in Cyprus created a rap song on water and we sang it all together (ANNEX II) and the Hungarian produced two poems on water (ANNEX III). Drawings In Cyprus we drew paintings on water. Landmarks The Portuguese drew water landmarks of their area as gifts to the partners. Glasses Hand-glazed small glasses with a name for everyone were drawn by the Greeks. Games -Experiments at the Physics Labs At schools and during meetings we invented and took part in lots of games on water and some experiments, in order to know more on its use. 39

COMENIUS WAVES 2012-14 {Water Management & values for European Students}

Poster on water As we got to know more from each meeting and activity,

we drew a poster on the uses of water in each partner country. Water quiz The Hungarians prepared a water quiz for the local schools (ΑΝΝΕΧ ΙV). Wood and metal constructions The Belgians constructed wooden boats for our ‘waves’ and metal droplets.

Interdisciplinary knowledge of water We approached water from all aspects of school subjects: History:  the destruction of the Edersee dam in Germany in WWII.  Lake Karla in Greece was the hub of a lakeside civilization of fishermen residing in huts built in the lake all year round.  At Alyki salt lake the mosque of Hala Sultan is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year.  The levadas in Madeira started as irrigation channels and became tourist hiking attraction in the 60s.  The watermills in Galician rivers and in Polish countryside host cultural centres and attract tourists.  water has played an important role in different religions, as the Hungarian team found out through presentations. Science: Experiments on water composites and effects were done in all schools and at all meetings. Arts & crafts: Drawings, paintings, songs on water ‘flooded in waves’ all our activities. Sports / PE: essays about water sports and their effect. Sociology & tourism: the questionnaire process, the visits at hosts’ homes, the water facilities at schools provided invaluable insight as to how water is viewed in everyday life in each country. Mineral, still or fizzy water was always a thing to learn about, as wee as medicinal baths & spas (research by the Hungarian). Water treatment plants, desalination practices, water distribution and farming irrigation were explored as well. ICT: Presentations, videos, recordings, teleconferences were used as channels to process the data for our project. 43

COMENIUS WAVES 2012-14 {Water Management & values for European Students}

Languages: Students (and teachers) practised and improved both their English as the project language and the partnership languages during meetings and activities (theatrical play in English, water code interview in German, poems in Hungarian). The uses of water We explored the uses of water in various sectors of life in partner countries. Tourism seems to be the most commonly used aspect of water use with energy and leisure following. Water in tourism: theurapeutic spas in Belgium (Chaudfontaine spas), in Hungary (Széchenyi & Gellert Thermal baths among numerous more), in Turkey (Salihli spas). Water sports in Germany (sailing in Edersee) and cultural visits in Cyprus (Alyki salt lake), in Poland (open air cultural centre of watermills), in Spain (Xallas river waterfalls & watermills), in Greece (Observation Centre for Lake Karla), hiking in Portugal-Madeira (levadas). Water in Energy: Electricity plants in Spain, Germany, Poland, geothermal energy in Turkey and Hungary, waste treatment plants in Hungary and Poland. Water in leisure: bird watching (flamingos) in Cyprus Alyki lagoon and Lake Karla in Greece, hiking in the various levadas trails in Madeira, lakeside walks and canoeing in Eder in Germany, Geological Centre in Poland, Aquarium in Spain. Water in transport: navigable rivers such as the Danube in Hungary, the Eder in Germany and the Vistula in Poland. Water in agriculture: irrigation channels in Greece, Spain and Madeira, geothermic energy for greenhouses in Turkey.

‘Water code’ script In Poland, the team based on the Questionnaire results, produced a play/script with interviews with ‘European athletes’ on the use practices of water, played in both English and German (ANNEX V). 44

Problems & solutions In Poland we focused on the problems each partner country faces with water and what we can do to solve them. We started with taking down three major problems each and suggestions on solving them. Then in groups of various countries we made artifacts and constructions on these solutions and we wrote down on a board the common water problems. POLAND extension Everyday problems

WHAT WE PRODUCED – OUTCOMES A questionnaire on the use and management of water, distributed in all partner schools and covering information within local range. The questionnaire prepared by the Belgian and Cypriot Comenius teams had the intention to compare the behaviour and the consumption of water between the 9 participating countries. Every school had to select 100 students who had to answer 54 questions. The questionnaire was divided into 2 parts. The first part had to be answered by all students and the second one only by the students that were members of the Comenius team at each school. The results that have been compiled from the Belgian Comenius team inform the people about the different ways of using water in the participating countries and try to let them realize the value of water consumption. A glossary in eight languages + English as the medium language. The project website with all the information of the project: http://waves-comenius.wix.com/wavescomenius The project logo, to be used together with the other logos produced by the WAVES partner teams. 50

Dissemination week The dissemination week was common for all partners on the 3rd week of February 2014. On one or more days of this week each partner took the project outside the school and presented it to the local authorities responsible for water management in their area. Besides this week, on every visit, the project teams had meetings with the local authorities to inform them about WAVES. Moreover, schools held several events to include the project (Dia da Europa, Club Europeu in Madeira, Europe week in Poland, WAVES event in Greece, water sports event in Hungary).

IMPRESSIONS – THOUGHTS - OPINIONS Students Concerning my experiences with the Comenius project I can say that it is a unique experience and that you get a completely new idea of a country with its people and culture I feel like I have "grown" taking part in the project and it was the best decision to do it, to get involved, to set off to pastures new! The stay in Cyprus was one of the best times in my life and I can only recommend to everyone to join and support the Comenius project. Lea, Germany

It was a great opportunity to share different traditions with our overseas students Portuguese student

teachers

I enjoyed the project: learning about the countries culture, mentalities and school system. Getting tips for my own lessons, perhaps the project helped me more than I helped it. Portuguese teacher

Gives you time to think about and get ideas. A lot of good practice. Better than any course. Portuguese teacher

ANNEXES ANNEX I – SHORT PLAY ACT Α’ (in the center of the stage a girl /”Karla” stands, wrapped in a blue sheet and around her the fisherman and his wife). Karla: I am lake Karla. I have been here long before people, thousands of years ago. My first companion was the mountains, the animals and the birds. I saw generations of people building their homes and towns around me, fishing and farming from me. I am so happy and full to see them come here – just as this couple of fishers. A fisherwoman: Hey, Nikola, did you catch any fish? B’ fisherman: Yes, I have already fished a lot. This lake is a blessing for our land. A fisherwoman: Yes, we are never going to be hungry. What are we going to do with it? B’ fisherman: Keep some for our family and sell the rest. And look! How beautiful the lake is! Birds are flying all around. Girl A: Hi, we came from Bulgaria to buy your fish. Girl B: And some fish for Serbia. Oh, look at all this beauty of nature! How calm! (A farmer passes by, spade in hand.) Α’ fisherwoman: Hey, Thanassis, are you going to your field? Thanassis: Yes, I need to dig it and prune the trees. B’ fisherman: Aren’t you afraid of the winter frost? Thanassis: No, the lake does not let snow fall, the climate is mild around her. Our trees are safe. ACT Β’ (Karla stands dirty-faced, two city men appear – an engineer and an MP. The ladies hit away mosquitoes in the air….) Α’ Lady: This is lake Karla. How many mosquitoes! Terrible! B’ Lady: We are going to catch malaria! Look at these poor peasants! How can they live here? We have to do something about it. Α’ Lady: Don’t worry! We are going to save these poor people. According to the plan, we are going to take the waters from the lake and give them fields. Look! Isn’t it a great project? B’ Lady: Of course! And they will be grateful to us!

(They pull the sheet and drag it away with them. After the drainage, the fishermen stand around the ‘lake’) A fisherwoman: What now Nikola? There are no fish… What are we going to do? B fisherman: We have to change jobs. Become farmers. But, we don’t know anything about farming. I don’t know how to plough or plant. Let’s ask Thanassis. (Thanassis, the farmer appears) A fisherwoman: Hey Thanassis, did you get land now that the lake has dried? Are you happy? Thanassis: How can I be happy? I got a lot of land, but it is no good any more. The soil is full of the fish eggs. And the rest of my land is not fertile because the climate has changed. Now that there is no lake, frost is often and it destroys my crops. There is no water for the fields either. B fisherman: What are you going to do? Thanassis: I give up. I will go away. There is nothing for me here. B fisherwoman: We are going to leave, too. Come with us to the city. We’ll look for jobs there. (They leave all together. Karla stands alone on stage.) Karla lake: I am so unhappy. I have no more water. It is gone, to give land, but no one can cultivate it. I feel so dirty. The fishermen have gone. The birds have gone. I am alone. I feel I’m going to die. Nothing will remain of me. Only my name in folk tales… I feel so miserable… ACT C’ (The children appear on stage. Karla is lying. The sheet is hidden) Α’ child: Ever since the grown-ups have dried the lake, our lives have changed. Β’ child: The fishermen have lost their jobs. C’ child: Many have gone to other places to find jobs in factories. Our place has been deserted. Α’ child: There must be something we can do. Β’ child: OK, but what? C child: Hey, guys, I found it! Let’s revive the lake! Β’ child: How? C’ child: We can bring the water back from the mountains around, and fill it up again. Α’ child: Come on! Let’s clean the lake! And we have to talk to the grownups!

61

COMENIUS WAVES 2012-14 {Water Management & values for European Students}

(The children scatter on stage, clean the lake’s face, wrap her with the sheet and gather again) C’ child: We did it! The grown-ups have agreed! Β’ child: The waters of the rivers and mountains flow into the lake again! Α’ child: Look! The lake has come to life! The birds have returned! (The lake is getting up and moves with the children) Karla: I am so happy! I have water again! Birds have come back! The people have come back to me again! I am saved!

ANNEX V - INTERVIEW SCRIPT THE INTERVIEW WITH EUROPEAN ATHLETES SCRIPT (Created on the basis of the questionnaire results)

(There is a table on the stage with some chairs around it. On the table students put some bottles of water and some glasses). (INTERVIEWER- STUDENT 1): Today I have invited a few foreign visitors. Let's meet famous athletes from Germany, Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Poland, Belgium, Hungary, Turkey and Portugal. I would like to learn from famous people if they pay attention to the problem of saving water in their everyday life, what drinks they prefer and how they take care of their hygiene. These are: Maria Höfl-Riesch, Eleni Daniliolu, Robert Lewandowski, Kelime Cetinkaya Christiano Ronaldo, Elena Chadzisawa, Jessica Augusto, Peter Veres, Jean Francois Gillet. I invite you to come out on stage First question to Elena- an artistic gymnast from Cyprus: Wie viel Wasser trinkst du pro Tag? (STUDENT 2): Nach einem langen gymnastischen Training bin ich sehr müde, deshalb trinke ich mehr als ein Liter Wasser. In europäischen Ländern trinkt man vier Gläser Wasser pro Tag. (INTERVIEWER- STUDENT 1): Everyone drinks water, but does everyone know where to obtain water to drink? This is the question to Belgian footballer.

The water we drink is not always clean, but there are filtration systems so that we can use to improve its quality. The next question to answer for German alpine skier: Maria, hast du zu Hause ein Wasserfilter? (INTERVIEWER- STUDENT 1): Our guests are getting tired so it’s time for a glass of water. In the meantime let’s enjoy the performance of school cheerleaders’ group who are going to encourage us to the further discussion. CHEERLEADERS’ PERFORMANCE. (INTERVIEWER- STUDENT 1): Thank you girls for your great performance. Full of positive energy, let’s move to the next topic of conversation-personal hygienic care. Christiano, What do you prefer after hard training: a shower or a bath? (STUDENT 6): I always have a shower after my training sessions. But when we play a very stressful match and we try very hard, I and my team are usually very tired. After such a match I take a long bath to relax and get some rest. (INTERVIEWER- STUDENT 1): Spanish players care about hygiene, shower then a relaxing bath .Quite good. Robert, Do Polish footballers care about hygiene? How many times a week do you take a bath? (STUDENT 7): I have a bath every day although in Europe people prefer to take a shower, usually 4 times a week. My friends from Turkey said that the Turks have similar habits to Polish people. On average, they take a bath 3 times a week. When we played at Euro 2012 with Greece, we told them that they could take a bath. They said to us: "Wait. What? '. It turned out that in fact no one in Greece uses the tub. They prefer shower.

69

COMENIUS WAVES 2012-14 {Water Management & values for European Students}

(INTERVIEWER- STUDENT 1): I have always wondered why in our school there are showers next to the gym. After all, we never use them. I'm curious to know how it is in other countries. I will ask Jessica. Jessica, could you tell us if students in your country take a shower after the lessons of physical education? (STUDENT 8) In Portugal and as I know in Spain it is a common thing. It sometimes happens in Germany, Hungary. But in Belgium, Greece and Cyprus students also don’t have a shower. I really admire the teachers who must survive in the classroom, fighting with disgusting smell of sweaty students. It is like a dose of drugs. (STUDENT 9) Showers at school are also common in Turkey. (INTERVIEWER- STUDENT 1): Athletes sweat intensely so the amount of washing is also much. Whether in their life it is important to conserve water. Do they use washing machines with a saving water programme? Let’s check what the Greek tennis player Eleni thinks about it. Eleni, do you have a washing machine with a saving water system? (STUDENT 10) I’ve never paid attention to it, but I haven’t got this programme. While my sports friends from Portugal, Poland and Spain don’t buy washing machines without such a programme ! For them it is the rule. For some of Hungarians it is also very important to save water doing washing, for the others it is no matter. My family from Belgium and Cyprus don’t pay attention to it. Buying a washing machine they don’t look if it has this programme or not. But I think it is very important and I will wonder about changing my washing machine. (INTERVIEWER- STUDENT 1): Thank you very much for the answers. Before we finish I’m going to test my nice guests. Now, the question to all guests. I will check your knowledge. The person who first gives a correct answer, is a winner. Listen to me very carefully. Ready. How many days can we survive without water? First the students act a/an Discussion/argument about that and finally they present the answer together. (Everybody stands up in a line, bow to the audience.) THE END
