Papitu, 100 years

Papitu was a very popular magazine published in Catalonia between 1908 and 1936. Very important painters as Juan Gris or Isidre Nonell, and writers as Josep Carner o Francesc Pujols, where among the staff of this particular magazine directed by the caricaturist Apa. Today we remember those pages, with the facsimil of the first issue, and an introductory essay. Enjoy it!

Papitu fue una de las publicaciones más significativas de las que han aparecido en Cataluña que se publicó entre 1908 y 1936. Nombres muy importantes de la pintura, como Juan Gris o Isidre Nonell, y de las letras, como Josep Carner o Francesc Pujols, se encuentran entre la impresionante nómina de colaboradores de esta publicación. Fué fundada con intenciones políticas por el caricaturista Apa, pero se encaminó hacia el humor desenfadado y subido de tono. Hoy recordamos aquellas páginas publicando el facsímil de ese primer número aparecido el 25 de noviembre de 1908. Disfrutémoslo!

Papitu, 100 anys Papitu fou una de les publicacions catalanes més populars de les primeres dàcades del segle XX. Va publicar-se entre 1908 i 1936. Fou un impressionant planter de dibuixants, entre els quals hi ha noms d’una importància cabdal en la història de l’art –Juan Gris, Isidre Nonell, Pau Gargallo, Xavier Nogués– i les lletres –Josep Carner o Francesc Pujols–. Fundada pel dibuixant i crític d’art Feliu Elias, la revista va trobar aviat una veta en l’humor més pujat de tó. Avui recuperem aquelles pàgines i oferim el facsímil del primer número d’aquella revista, amb un petit text introductòri en castellà i anglés, ja que cal que la gent del món s’assabenti de com les gastem els artistes d’aquí...

A començament d’aquest segle sortia a Barcelona una quantitat bastant crescuda de setmanaris humorístics. El més important, per la categoria artística i intel.lectual dels seus fundadors, era el Papitu.

“Este Papitu es tan verde que se nos ha convertido en vegetal”. Son las aceradas palabras de Francesc Pujols para definir con lacónica precisión la deriva de una de las publicaciones humorísticas más populares de la Catalunya de antes de la guerra civil. Durante sus casi treinta años de vida, Papitu fue el paradigma de la revista erótico-festiva catalana. Un género, que bajo muy diversos nombres -prensa sicalíptica, galante, peripatética o alegre- tuvo su hueco en los quioscos a lo largo de las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Revista polémica Papitu había nacido, ahora hace justamente un siglo, con una orientación muy distinta. La revista vino al mundo en un contexto político y social muy concreto: el primer ejemplar apareció el 25 de noviembre de 1908, justo el día en que se cumplía el segundo aniversario del asalto de un grupo de militares a la redacción de las publicaciones catalanistas Cu-Cut! y La Veu de Catalunya, lo que había provocado la promulgación de la Ley de Jurisdicciones y –como respuesta– el movimiento de la Solidaritat Catalana. Su fundador fue el pintor, dibujante y crítico de arte Feliu Elias que firmaba sus caricaturas políticas con el seudónimo de Apa. La publicación agrupaba en su primer número gente de tendencias políticas y vitales muy dispares, desde el mismo

Apa, Josep Carner, Pompeu Gener o Eugeni d’Ors a Francesc Pujols, Joan Junceda, Màrius Aguilar o Ramon Casas. La aventura finalizó muy pronto, pues una caricatura de Junceda crítica con la Lliga Regionalista en la cubierta del número dos, provocó las iras de los hombres del partido de Prat de la Riba y Cambó, la salida de Eugeni d’Ors, Ismael Smith y el propio Junceda, y la enemistad con los medios afines a la Lliga, especialmente de La Veu y el Cu-Cut!, revista de humor de la que fue expulsado Apa. A pesar de un inicio con tantos sobresaltos, la revista consiguió armar una redacción de una calidad excepcional, sobretodo en la parte artística: Juan Gris, Isidre Nonell, Pablo Gargallo, Xavier Nogués, Manuel Humbert, Francesc Labarta, Pascual Capuz, Marian Pidelaserra, Joan Colom o Josep Maria Junoy, entre otros, firmaban las viñetas. Se puede considerar que el primigenio Papitu fue la primera publicación Noucentista, pues su estética y orientación ya adelanta lo que se plasmará en L’Almanac dels noucentistes de 1911. ta y filósofo Francesc Pujols. A partir de ese momento, deciden abandonar la sátira corrosiva, anticlerical y fuertemente politizada que se había practicado en la redacción hasta aquel momento para orientarse hacia un humor frívolo, erotizado y procaz. El cambio supuso un rutilante éxito y se pasó de vender 5.000 ejemplares a 40.000. Papitu se convirtió en una revista verde, casi en el sentido más literal de la palabra: al pié de la mayoría de chistes protagonizados por elegantes damiselas, frívolas jovenzuelas o provocativas modistillas a medio vestir o desvestir se hablaba de nabos, higos, patatas, pebrots y toda suerte de verduras susceptibles de connotaciones o dobles sentidos eróticos. Visto desde la óptica de hoy, la mayoría de material de aquellas revistas nos parece de una inocencia superlativa: “¿Saps aont tenen el pèl més rissat les dones? –Home! ¿Aont? –A l’Africa! home! A l’Africa!”

La locuaz prosa de Francesc Pujols o las descabelladas crónicas en castellano traducido directamente del catalán de Antoni Rué i Dalmau, sumado a las viñetas de Bon, Labarta, Castanys, Max, Prat, Bosch, Garrido u Opisso, consiguieron que el humor impúdico del Papitu no desembocó en la rijosa chabacanería de la mayoría de publicaciones del mimo tono que intentaron emular su éxito editorial. La intención de aquel Papitu, consistía en llegar a la trasgresión a través de la carne, con un espíritu libertino muy parecido a lo que se practicará con “el destape” en la época -más reciente- de la transición. Durante la dictadura de Primo de Rivera, una grave sanción clausuró la revista durante varios años, más los mismos editores se sacaron de la manga la revista Pakitu, que con idéntico formato, contenido y plantilla de colaboradores siguió surtiendo el mercado de verdes piezas humorísticas. Papitu, desaparece definitivamente du-

rante la guerra civil. Tras ser incautado por el Sindicat de Dibuixants Professionals del PSUC y editar 18 números de humor revolucionario, deja de aparecer en el otoño de 1936. Un siglo después Una exposición antológica de los dibujos del Papitu preparada por la asociación “Els 4 Gags” podrá visitarse en tan irónico marco como el Centre Moral i Cultural del Poble Nou (c/ Pujades, 176). Asimismo, se puede encontrar fácilmente en las librerías la delirante novela de folletín La trador barcelonina que Francesc Pujols publicó por entregas en aquella revista, y acaba de aparecer el volumen ‘Papitu’ i les publicacions eroticosicalíptiques del seu temps en el que el estudioso de la prensa catalana Lluís Solá i Dachs recopila una gran cantidad del suculento material que se publicó en aquel lúbrico semanario con el que se regocijaban nuestros abuelos y se sonrojaban nuestras abuelasl

“This Papitu is so green that we have been in convertdo plant.” They are the words of Francesc Pujols to define precisely the life from one of the most popular humorous publication humorous in Catalonia in the pre-civil war period. During his nearly thirty years of life, Papitu was the paradigm for the Catalan erotic magazine. A genre, which under many different names –sicalíptic, gallant, merry, or peripatetic– wich has his spot on newsstands in the early decades of the twentieth century. Polemical born Papitu was born, now just a century ago, with a very different orientation. The magazine appeared in a very specific political and social context: the first issue appeared on November 25, 1908, just the day that marked the second anniversary of the assault of the catalanist publications Cu-Cut! and La Veu de Catalunya by a group of spanish soldiers. That led to the enactment of a polemical law to increase the censure about catalonian publications (call the “Llei de Jurisdiccions”) and a movement of union of all the catalanist political forces to defense his rights, call te Solidaritat Catalana. The founder of Papitu was a painter, draftsman and art critic called Feliu Elias who signed his political cartoons under the pseudonym of Apa. The frst issue of this publication was able to join

people of very different political and vital tendencys, moreover of Apa, there where the poet Josep Carner, the writers Pompeu Gener, Eugeni d’Ors, and Francesc Pujols, the great cartoonist Joan Junceda, the journalist Màrius Aguilar, and the great painter Ramon Casas. The adventure ended very soon, for a caricature of Junceda. This caricature was critical with the “Lliga Regionalista”, a catalan conservative political party in the deck of the number two, and provoked the anger of men of this political party, leaded by Prat de la Riba and Cambó. The consequences where the output of Eugeni d’Ors, Ishmael Smith and Junceda himself, of the redaction, and enmity with the journals and magazines related to this political party, especially La Veu and Cu-Cut!, humor magazine that expelled Apa who draw in its pages. Despite a launch with so many shocks, the magazine managed to assemble a team of exceptional quality, especially in the artistic part: Juan Gris, Isidre Nonell, Pablo Gargallo, Xavier Nogués, Manuel Humbert, Francesc Labarta, Pascual Capuz, Marian Pidelaserra, Josep Maria Junoy or Joan Colom, among others, signed the cartoons. considered that the original Papitu was the first Noucentist publication, as its aesthetics and orientation, advances what will be in L’Almanac dels Noucentistes, published in 1911.

Green way That same 1911, Feliu Elias, who failed to obtain benefits with his magazine, sells it to the printer Oriol Martorell. The new editor appointed director the poet and philosopher Francesc Pujols, and they decide to abandon the corrosive satire, highly politicized and anticlerical that was practiced in the editorial staff and move towards a frivolous mood, erotized and impudent. The change was a brilliant success and they moved on to sell 5,000 copies to 40,000. Papitu became a magazine green, almost in the most literal sense of the word: the text of the most of gags was about turnips, figs, potatoes and capsicum, all them sorts of vegetables susceptible to erotic connotations and double meanings in the catalan langua-

The loquacious prose of Francesc Pujols and the fanciful chronic directly translated from catalan into Spanish by Antoni Rué i Dalmau, added to the cartoons of Bon, Labarta, Castanys, Max, Prat, Bosch, Garrido and Opisso was the success that leds the humor of Papitu to overtop the rest of publications wich tried to emulate their success editorial. Papitu intented to reach the transgression through the flesh, with a libertine spirit very similar to what is practiced with the “destape” in the most recent time of the spanish transition to democracy post-Franco. During the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, the autorithy sancioned the magazine with a several years closing. But the same publishers make immediately the magazine Pakitu, with identical

format, identical content and identical staff and they continue with his humor impudent, lustful and provocative. Papitu, finally disappears during the Sapnish civil war. It’s propiety was appropriated by the Sindicat de Dibuixants Professionals section of PSUC. They edited 18 excellent issues of revolutionary humor, far away of erotical jokes, but the magazine dies and no longer appears in the autumn of 1936. A century later An anthology exhibition of drawings from the old Papitu has been prepared by the association “Els 4 Gags” should be visited on so ironic framework as the Centre Moral i Cultural del Poble Nou.
