Welcome
welcome note_mmm master 24/01/2015 17:07 Page 7
With spring just around the corner there is no better time to start getting in the mood for love than February. There can, after all, be fewer things which excite the mood more than the prospect of the weather finally picking up – the arrival of daffodils and some much needed sunshine. But while there's still a bit of time before we welcome all of that, this month is one to inject a little romance into your life. Whether it's with a new love, or a life-time partner, Valentine's Day gives us all a chance to do something special. Of course, if you've already done something special and popped the question, you'll be preparing for your big day. And what better way to get some inspiration than from our special wedding guide inside this month's edition. We take a look at venues, fashions, jewellers, honeymoon destinations and highlight some upcoming wedding fayres to ensure you have the best possible start to married life. Talking of starting off with something new, last month I visited the opening of the Reynolds Retreat in Borough Green – a health retreat which is pushing the boat out in a bid to create a special experience. We wish them the best of luck. In fact there are so many marvellous venues now in the county – many of which you can see advertising inside – we really are becoming rather spoilt for choice. But let's not forget...if you haven't yet met the person you want to fall madly in love with, there's always George Clooney. He may be married now, but that isn't going to stop the rest of us getting lost in his dreamy eyes! We take a look at his career inside – and on the very special, intelligent and strong woman who has stolen his heart. So enjoy this month's edition of mmm and be sure to let us know if you find love this Valentine's Day. See you next month!

GEORGE! Just who can resist the allure of Mr Clooney?
or anyone who has been to Venice and strolled alongside the majestic Grand Canal, the flotilla of tiny craft which travel up and down its length every moment of every day will be a familiar site. Yet for a day last year, the famous waterway became a personal highway for one who could lay claim to being the world’s most famous man. Because when George Clooney announces he is to tie the knot in the world’s most romantic city, even the canals of Venice become mere bit players in what was perhaps the biggest show business event of 2014. September 27th, 2014, saw the women of the world rue the day a man, whose smouldering good looks can cause palpitations from the comfort of the cinema screen, was finally taken off the market. And certainly his wife was flawless in her own credentials. Amal Alamuddin is a British-Lebanese human rights lawyer, with an intellect and beauty to put most others to shame. Little wonder then, that when they decided the floating Italian city was to be their wedding destination, the world’s media decided to spend a few days there too. a

And they were treated to the sight of Amal Alamuddin strutting her stuff in a succession of stunning fashions. She wore Dolce & Gabbana, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Giambattista Valli and a bespoke, timeless, classic Oscar de la Renta for the wedding dress itself. (Just don’t think the new Mrs Clooney is a mere fashion accessory to her husband. Just last month (January), she was in the headlines herself after representing one of the three al-Jazeera journalists jailed in Egypt amid claims they spread false news. She did so at the risk of arrest for speaking out against the Egyptian regime.) All of which signified what an enormous celebrity George Clooney has become. His wedding made the front page of almost every newspaper in the Western world, while news channels were thrilled by the blend of celebrity and architectural splendour they could parade on their 24hour news channels. Which is no mean achievement for a man whose fame continues to rise and whose influence spreads far wider than the small and big screen outings which have come to define him. So you can imagine the surprise of many when, in the summer of 2013, George and a host of other A-list stars descended on the south coast of England to shoot their latest flick. The Monuments Men – charting a true story search for Nazi gold – saw the film crew shoot at a farm in Ashford and then extensively just on the Kent/East Sussex border at Camber Sands. Joining George were long time friend Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Cate Blanchett and even Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville. It’s fair to say Camber Sands is a world away from Lexington, Kentucky where, in 1961, George was born. He certainly had the right gene pool to become a heart throb. His mother was a city councillor and a beauty pageant queen. His father a former TV presenter and game show host. With a blend of Irish and German roots, he could even claim a distant connection to the mother of Abraham Lincoln. Raised a strict Roman Catholic, he suffered a set back when, aged just 12, he developed Bell’s palsy, a condition which partially paralyses the face. He remembers: “It went away in time. It took about nine months to go away. It was the first year of high school, which was a bad time for having half your face paralysed.” a Credit: Rex Features
mmm 13
A keen baseball and basketball player, he attempted to forge a career in baseball, even having a trial for the Cincinnati Reds in 1977, but failed to sufficiently impress. He studied broadcast journalism at university before taking on a variety of roles ranging from door-to-door sales, working on construction sites and selling women’s shoes. But it was during this time his focus had shifted to acting and a desire to make it big. Big parts in the likes of the hugely successful Roseanne and The Golden Girls shows in the early eighties, put him on the right road and he returned to acting school to brush up his talents. He was to be rewarded in 1994 by landing the role of
Dr Doug Ross in US hospital drama ER. It sent him flying onto the A-list and made him a well known name around the world. With his reputation and popularity growing, it was perhaps little surprise he swiftly started turning his focus to movies. Given the role of Batman (which George himself does not look back on fondly), he secured roles in the likes of The Peacemaker, From Dawn Till Dusk and, after leaving ER in 1999, The Perfect Storm. But it was the remake of the classic Ocean’s 11 rat-pack movie which catapulted George into undisputed success story territory. A huge hit, it suited his classic old school Hollywood looks and spawned a host of sequels. “I’ve got a good life,” he admits, “I’ve been a very lucky man. “I was a struggling actor for a long time and before that I sold ladies shoes at a store called McAlpine’s. Before that I sold insurance door-to-door - that was a fun job. “I cut tobacco for a living and somewhere along the way I got lucky. “I did eight television series before ER hit and if we didn’t get a Thursday night at 10pm time slot, you know, I wouldn’t have the career that I have.” In 2006, he picked up an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film Syriana after having also been nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Good Night and Good Luck. Most recently, he was in the huge space movie Gravity alongside Sandra Bullock. In 2013, he won another Oscar for producing Argo and is the only person in the awards’ prestigious history to have been nominated in six different categories. His talents, it appeared, knew no bounds. And as interest in his career exploded, so did the focus on his private life. “I was married in 1989,” he says, “I wasn’t very good at it.” The marriage, to actress, Talia Balsam in Las Vegas in 1989 was short-lived with the couple divorcing by 1993. “I definitely wasn’t someone who should have been married at that point,” George would admit. “I just don’t feel like I gave Talia a fair shot.” A succession of beautiful partners followed, including British TV and radio presenter Lisa Snowdon, actresses Renee Zellweger and Kelly Preston, and professional wrestler Stacey Keibler.a
p15_mmm master 24/01/2015 19:51 Page 20
mmm 15
But when he met Amal Alamuddin, some 17 years his junior, something changed. The pair first met in Italy, but it was not until October last year the pair were first seen in public, spotted dining at a London restaurant (the couple now have a £10 million home on the banks of the Thames). The two would have had lots to discuss. George has made no secret of his interest in world affairs and has attempted to use his stardom to shed the spotlight on a host of areas. Most notably, he made a film about the Darfur conflict, and was high profile in raising money following the earthquake in Haiti. So he, perhaps more than most, can enjoy the fruits of his success with a little bit of a clear conscience. Which is useful as he has a net worth of a cool £117m ($180m) plus homes in Los Angeles, Mexico, London and Italy. Whether his popularity takes a blow following his marriage remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, though, that George Clooney is going to be one of those names remembered in 100 years. mmm

Valentine’s Day OR
Traditional gift modern twist?
W
ith Valentine’s Day fast approaching, will you opt for the traditional gift or maybe add a modern twist to truly surprise your loved one? Here are mmm’s top ten gift ideas and how they can be adapted to suit the modern man or woman in your life to make this Valentine’s Day extra special...
Ballooning Break
W
hy limit yourself to just a carriage? Go up, up and away in hot air balloon as London Beach has linked with Skybus ballooning to help couples enjoy this special day up in the clouds. (01580 766279).
This is a normal relaxing break with full use of the spa, accommodation, a two-course evening meal and breakfast, with a ride in a hot air balloon with Skybus ballooning, taking off from the hotel. Costs £250 per person.

Flowers
A
traditional gift are flowers, they are beautiful, but they do not last for very long, especially at this time of year when the central heating is on! Give your partner something as lasting as your love by garnishing the bouquet with a variety of gift vouchers. Shops such as House of Fraser or Woods Designer Clothing (01622 766262), can add a unique twist to any regular bouquet. A vase full of candy might be a nice addition to your bouquet, or you can truly win your lady’s heart by including gift certificates to her favourite beauty spa such, as Botanical Beauty (01622 661300) or Pure Hair & Beauty (01622 632642). If you’d prefer a more personal touch, you can also include certificates of your own entitling her to a free massage. If you’re buying roses anyway, you might also want to pick up a bag of rose petals.
Jewellery
T
itanium is the new silver. Rather than spending cash on some random unoriginal accessory, give your partner something that will stand out. Have a ring engraved with a personal message. The message could be as simple as your names and anniversary date, or as grandiose as an excerpt from a romantic love poem. For her, look no further than: *Kaizen Antiques and Jewellery (01634 814132) *Charmain Beaton Design (01622 296717) Regardless of whatever you choose, your loved one will be guaranteed to appreciate this thoughtful - and lasting declaration of your love.
A romantic dinner
S
pread your dinner across town with multiple courses at different venues. Rent a limo from a local company such as Oasis Limo’s of Maidstone (0800 234 3552) and go out on the town as you relive some of your most memorable dates. Have an starter at the place where you first met, enjoy dinner at the restaurant where you proposed, have dessert at the café where you first confessed your love, and finish it off with a well-timed nightcap back home. Or try one of our highly recommended restaurants such as Phad Thai (01732 870000) in West Mailling, or Buenos Aires (01622 688655) in Maidstone. You will both fall in love all over again as the emotions conjured up, begin to set in.

A day in Paris
V
alentine’s Day in Paris should be foolproof, but then the reality kicks in – where can you find a romantic hotel that doesn’t cost hundreds of Euros a night? Which of the city’s thousands of restaurants is a good bet for an intimate dinner? And what can you see and do in the city in mid-February that will be in keeping with the mood.
If you’re lucky enough to be planning Valentine’s Day in Paris with someone you love, you’re not likely to come away disappointed. The city of light seems to be synonymous with romance, so finding things to do for this special occasion shouldn’t prove too difficult. But planning ahead is essential, as couples naturally flock here to celebrate on February 14th.
Chocolates
A
void the predictable this Valentine’s Day and give your loved one chocolate-covered strawberries instead.
Lingerie
P
resent her with a provocative piece of lingerie from a high-end local retailer, like Leia at Bluewater (01322 313887). Well fitted and supportive underwear help to create a more confident woman.
You can prepare these decadent treats yourself and impress your partner with your cookery skills. Alternatively, pop into your local Hotel Chocolat store (01622 768362) and pick up something special.
Spa
A
night away is always a treat, but it’s especially nice when a spa package is included for both of you. Whisk your partner away to a trendy boutique hotel and relax together in beautiful spa surroundings enjoying a massage or similar treatment. One place that’s sure to impress is the renowned Eastwell Manor, set in the ideallic countryside near Ashford (01233 213000), or why not try the tranquil London Beach Hotel, close to the historic town of Tenterden (01580 766279). Fancy something nearer to town? Then look no further than the Village Hotel (0871 222 4598) or Mecure Hotel (0844 815 9045) both are located on the outskirts of Maidstone, and have lovely health and fitness facilities, charming rooms and excellent food.

Valentine’s Recipe Pan-fried
Scallops with textures of Cauliflower Ingredients 6-8 scallops, depending on size 1 lemon One small cauliflower 1 small potato 500mls whole milk Knob of butter Tablespoon of olive oil and small knob of butter Tablespoon of plain flour, seasoned with salt and pepper Oil for deep frying
Method: Break the cauliflower into small florets. Place half the florets into boiling salted water and simmer for one minute before draining. Refresh under cold water and place on kitchen towel to dry. Peel and dice the potato and place in a saucepan with the rest of the cauliflower florets. Pour in the whole milk and then fully cover with water. Bring to the boil and simmer until tender. Drain and blitz to a smooth purée with the butter. Keep warm. Slice half of the blanched florets and pan fry in a little oil and butter until golden. Keep warm. Toss the rest of the florets into the seasoned flour and deep fry for a few minutes until golden. Keep warm. Heat a large frying pan until hot. Place the scallops into the pan and cook on one side for two to three minutes. Turn over and cook for another 30 seconds before squeezing over the lemon. Roll the scallops through the lemon juice until nicely glazed. To serve: place the cauliflower purée onto plates with the scallops on top and decorate with roasted and deep fried florets. reasons to marry in Winter 10 T mmm weddings
37
here are a number of reasons to get married in winter, and to prove it mmm goes through their top ten list on you can turn your wedding day into a winter paradise...
1Cool weather
Winter is undoubtedly the most romantic season; cold weather provides the perfect excuse to cuddle up to the one you love, and when better than on your wedding day? Moreover, grooms will be more comfortable in their suits and brides need not worry about their makeup wearing off in the heat, as they would in summer.
2 Availability
You’re more likely to secure your hairdresser, your favourite bridal photographer, you name it, because there are likely fewer weddings taking place.
3 The wedding dress
Brides can cover up in something super stylish à la Dr Zhivago, like a beautiful fur wrap, a fluffy bolero or a romantic silk velvet cloak, eradicating the selfconsciousness that so often comes with a strapless summer dress.
4 Fun and quirky
There are lots of fun and quirky elements you can introduce to a winter wedding, such as fake fur earmuffs on your flower girls, a snow globe as a topper and mugs of mulled wine or hot chocolate instead of sparkling wine or Champagne.
5 It’s different
A winter date makes a wedding special in more ways than one – it will brighten up the dark days of your winter and guests are more likely to remember it, as winter weddings are few and far between compared with summer weddings.

10 More time
You’re more likely to get all the people you really want at your wedding, as there is less likelihood that your wedding clashes with another wedding or someone’s summer holiday.
Winter provides an opportunity to get creative with your bouquet; instead of going for fresh flowers, introduce feathers, silk flowers, crystals or even Christmas baubles if the timing is right! Better still, you can keep it and treasure it for life.
8 Value
Most services (venues, photographers and sweet buffets to name a few) are prepared to offer a discount during the “off-peak” winter months, making a winter wedding perfect for those brides on a budget.

Some room for the groom
I
think you’ll agree that so much of the excitement of planning a wedding is focused on the wedding dress but today we are going to look at the main man in the equation, the Groom. Long gone are the days of heading down to the nearest hire shop and hiring six matching, usually poorly fitted, standard wedding suits. Today the options for men are, thankfully, endless. Whether you choose to go down the traditional route and hire your suits or decide to buy your own, the great news is you don’t have to abandon your sense of style. This is your chance, as well as your lovely bride’s, to really stand out from the crowd and make a statement. Men, when thinking about your suit for the big day, here are a few considerations to make: The Wedding Theme & Venue I love, love, love the idea of a black tie suit in a swanky London hotel, but if your venue is more shabby chic and relaxed then try and reflect this in your style choices chic more than shabby though please! Colours Don’t automatically go for traditional grey, black or navy suits. These look great but if you are more of an adventurous character then maybe try something a little different - burgundy or brown anyone? To Hire or to Buy? For years Moss Bros has been the ‘go to’ for wedding suit hire, with a good selection of traditional style wedding suits at reasonable prices they are a safe bet but if you’d like something a little different check out Essex and online based ‘Gentleman’s Outfitters’ Jack Bunney. Jack Bunney offer the choice of six suit styles in a wide variety of colours and not a swirly, polyester waist coat in sight! Definitely the choice of suit for the dapper gents out there. Accessories It’s not just the bride who gets all the fun when it comes to accessories; I believe that accessories can really add that extra something special to any outfit and on your wedding day it’s all about the details. If you’ve chosen your suit then it’s time to pick everything else to complete your wedding day look.
So a plain white shirt will do won’t it? No way! According to Carl Thompson, founder and designer of menswear brand Hawkins and Shepherd, the shirt is so much more important than something to put under your suit. “The shirt is essential, it is the foundation for the final outfit. The shirt is a versatile piece of clothing and you can make small, subtle changes depending on age, shape and style. As one of the biggest days of your life, it’s essential that you are comfortable so I would recommend 100% cotton in a poplin weave. It’s worth remembering that your suit jacket will spend most of its time on the back of your chair - yet your shirt will be on your back all night, so make it count.” Carl has noticed a change in the choices men are making when choosing their wedding day outfits, they’re no longer heading straight for the hire shop when looking for a suit. ‘I have noticed a major shift in the way men dress for weddings. More and more grooms are opting for either a vintage or modern look and ditching the traditional wedding cravat tie with a wing collar shirt. As we all know, us men have to dress in accordance to the bride and with more brides opting for vintage lace wedding dresses, I’m finding more grooms choosing a three-piece tailored suits with 1920’s style pin collar shirt.’ Ties and Cufflinks Even if you’ve decided to opt for a simple-style, traditional suit don’t be afraid to add a splash of colour and interest with your tie and more subtly with a great pair of cufflinks. Here are my favourite picks straight from the high street. Alexandra Smith, Stylist & Blogger at Alexandra Smith Styling www.alexandrasmithstyling.co.uk

He’s still standing How Elton John turned from ‘‘Rocket Man’’ to family man n the year in which the Back to the Future movie saw Marty McFly fly 30 years through time from 1985 to a hoverboard, hologram heavy 2015, time travel would certainly allow a rare chance to see one of the foremost musical superstars in the most modest of surroundings. Delorean outside? The Northwood Hills Hotel in Middlesex. Because in the bar you would have seen a 15-year-old tinkling the ivories. ‘Reggie’ as the name he performed under, would play Thursday to Sunday in the bar, performing well known classics by the likes of Ray Charles, Jim Reeves and even occasionally sneaking in his own self-penned tune. Few of the regulars would have taken a great deal of
notice. In a few years’ time, they would all reflect on being able to watch Elton John on the first steps of a career, which would elevate him to the very top of the global music business. And in May this year, he will be performing hits from a career which now stretches back some 45 years, as he rolls back into Kent for a special one-off show. The singer-songwriter and his band will be at the new Kent Event Centre on the Kent Showground in Detling on May 31st, for what may well prove to be the musical live event of the year. It will be his first performance in the county since he played an
open air show at the St Lawrence Ground – home of Kent County Cricket Club – in 2006. The star explained: “My band and I are very much looking forward to returning to Kent. I cannot believe it has been eight years since we last played there - too long! “The fans in the south east have always made me feel very welcome during my several shows in the county, and I can’t wait to bring our show to the Kent Event Centre. I am sure we will all have a fantastic time.” And with a remarkable back catalogue, few will argue with that. Especially as just last year saw the 40th anniversary of his seminal Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, an album which topped the charts around the world and introduced us to hits such as Bennie and the Jets, Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting and Candle in the Wind. A re-recorded version of which, released as a tribute to the late Princess Diana, became the UK’s biggest ever selling single, racking up more than 30 million sales. What’s more, Elton is enjoying being a married man – for the second time – this time to his long-time partner David Furnish. The two took advantage of the new legislation to tie the knot and convert their existing civil partnership. As you would expect from one of the most outrageous stars to have ever graced the stage, the ceremony in Windsor was suitably star-studded. Among those attending were David and Victoria Beckham, best-selling singer Ed Sheeran and comedian David Walliams. Also in attendance, were the couple’s two adopted sons – Zachary and Elijah. a

It marks a remarkable pinnacle in a private life which saw him, for many years, having to disguise his homosexuality. In the late 1960’s, he was engaged to be married, while in 1984 he surprised many by getting married only to divorce and admit, publicly for the first time, he was gay in 1988. So it was, perhaps, not surprising he welcomed the change in the laws which allowed him and his partner finally to become man and husband. “Having our civil partnership was an incredible breakthrough for people that have campaigned for a long time - through the 1960’s and the 50’s in England when it was so hard to be gay and hard to be open about it. And it was a criminal act,” he explained. “So for this legislation to come through is joyous, and we should celebrate it. We shouldn’t just say, ‘Oh, well we have a civil partnership. We’re not going to bother to get married’. We were always going to get married.” Back at that hotel in Middlesex, though, he – still known by his birth name of Reginald Dwight - was on the cusp of a breakthrough. Just three years later he had founded a band – Bluesology – which were backing the likes of Patti LaBelle and Long John Baldry. But it was in 1967, when he auditioned for Liberty Records, that he would be paired with someone who would change his life.
His future manager, Ray Williams, handed him an envelope with lyrics submitted by a Bernie Taupin. It would form a songwriting relationship which would stretch to more than 40 years and produce some of the music world’s most memorable tracks. “Because nobody recorded the songs we were writing,” Elton explained, “they got us to record our own songs. It all kind of happened by accident. But because of the experience I had, I knew how to work a crowd, so I was ready.” The success would come thick and fast. He changed his name and between 1969 and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in 1973, he released seven albums. And he continued to be prolific through the 1970’s when his stage shows with remarkable costumes and theatricals only reinforced his image and reputation. By the 1980’s he calmed down the costumes, but delivered a whole host of new hits. Yet the decade of excess also delivered a whole lot of new problems for Elton. Having long dabbled with drugs, his cocaine use verged on getting as out of control as his reputation for being something of a diva.
mmm 61
He finally kicked the habit in 1990. He explained: “If I hadn’t have stopped then I’d probably be dead. I didn’t want to end up like Whitney Houston and I could so easily have ended up like her. “I came close to death a number of times. I would have an epileptic seizure and turn blue, and people would find me on the floor and put me to bed, and then 40 minutes later I’d be snorting another line. “This is how bleak it was, I’d stay up, I’d smoke joints, I’d drink a bottle of Johnnie Walker and then I’d stay up for three days and then I’d go to sleep for a day and a half, get up, and because I was so hungry, because I hadn’t eaten anything, I’d binge and have like three bacon sandwiches, a pot of ice cream and then I’d throw it up, because I became bulimic and then go and do the whole thing all over again. That is how tragic my life was.” And what of that legendary temper of his? It seems age, too, has mellowed him. “I always thought I might be really irritable with kids, but no way. Both my parents had tempers and it frightened the s*** out of me. I don’t ever want to display that in front of the children.
“

“In the past, particularly when I was on drugs, there was a monstrous side to me, but I’m not really like that. I can be like that briefly, but everyone can. “Drugs bring out the darkest side of your soul eventually, especially cocaine and alcohol. And the unrealistic life, the craziness. I mean, I rang up the office from a London hotel and said it was too windy, could they do something about it. How crazy is that? Stop the wind! I was serious.” But today, Elton John is a very different person. He turns 68 in March and his Kent show this summer is part of yet another European tour. The show business ride is showing no sign of slowing down for Sir Elton quite yet, it seems. Even if the old show business lifestyle has become a much calmer ride right now – as a married man with two children. mmm

Royal by name nature and deed Queen Elizabeth II came to power 63 years ago this month. We look back at a remarkable reign... n February 6th 1952, after several years of ill health, King George VI was found dead in his bed at the royal home in Sandringham. He was just 56. It will have come as little surprise to those closest to him. The stress of the Second World War and a lifetime as a heavy smoker had taken its toll on his health in recent years. Some three years earlier his declining health saw him nearly lose his leg, and when he was diagnosed with lung cancer even the removal of one of his lungs would not be enough to save him. For his daughter, Elizabeth, it was a traumatic period in her young life. Already having stepped up her public engagements as her father’s health deteriorated, she had flown to Kenya on a visit en-route to Australia. Against doctor’s advice, her father had gone to the airport to see her off. It would be the last time she would speak to him. Exactly one week later he was dead. And Elizabeth, just 26, was the new Queen. Immediately cancelling her visit, she rushed home for a period of mourning and the transition to becoming one of the most instantly recognisable women in the world. The following June she would have her coronation. Not that, when she was born in 1926, anyone expected her to become the second Queen Elizabeth to reign. Her grandfather, George V, had been particularly smitten with the a
O
young Lilibet – as she was known to her closest family. But during his reign she was third in line to the throne – behind her uncle, Edward, the then Prince of Wales, and then her father, the Duke of York. Observers expected the then young Edward to marry and have children of his own – all of whom would have leap-frogged little Lilibet. But, as the history books show, things rarely work out as they are expected to. George V died in January 1936 and Edward, 52, became Edward VIII. Yet his reign would be shortlived in one of the most remarkable chapters of modern royal history. His desire to marry American socialite, Wallis Simpson, sparked a constitutional crisis. She was already divorced from one man and in the middle of divorcing a second. Politicians argued she could not sit alongside him as Queen. Not to mention the enormous clash it would present the King in his role as head of the Church of England which, at that time, opposed re-marriage for those divorced and whose ex-spouse was still alive. Refusing to give up the woman he loved, he instead opted to abdicate as King. By December of 1936 he had stepped down and Lilibet’s father, Albert, became King – taking the regal name of George VI. Edward’s reign was one of the shortest in royal history. Suddenly, the young Elizabeth had been elevated into the next in line to the throne at the age of just ten – assuming, of course, her parents had no more children and a son in particular. Her rise in stature prompted a number of changes in her life, receiving private tuition in constitutional history, learning French and even having a special Girl Guides company formed – the 1st Buckingham Palace Company – so she could socialise with girls her own age. a
68 mmm
Within three years she joined her parents on a royal tour of Canada and the US and the bond between her and her parents was strong. That was underlined when the Second World War broke out in 1939. Calls for the young princesses to be evacuated to Canada, as German bombers began strikes on London were rejected by Elizabeth’s mother – who would become the Queen Mother – who reportedly said “the children won’t go without me. I won’t leave without the King. And the King will never leave”. Instead Elizabeth, and her sister Margaret, were moved to Balmoral in Scotland and then on to Sandringham in Norfolk. In 1940, Elizabeth made her first radio broadcast when, aged just 14, she addressed the other children who had been evacuated during the conflict. The war made many children have to grow up fast, and Elizabeth was no different. In the final year of the conflict, 1945, aged 18, she had trained as a driver and mechanic in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service. The relief of victory 70 years ago this year, in 1945, was seen up close by the young princesses who mingled, anonymously on the streets of London as crowds celebrated the end of hostilities. “We asked my parents if we could go out and see for ourselves,” she would later recall. “I remember we were terrified of being recognised. I remember lines of unknown people linking arms and walking down Whitehall – everyone swept along on a tide of happiness and relief.”
But within ten years of peace being declared, the young Princess Elizabeth would see her life change forever. Not only would she marry her long time sweetheart – Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark – in 1947, but her father’s premature death would see her become Queen Elizabeth II. Just 26 when she took the throne, she has become one of the longest serving monarchs and has seen the royal family through some of its most traumatic chapters, but always with the greatest of measured responses and a overriding sense of responsibility to the nation she serves. In exchange, the public has taken her to their heart. Over the years, generations have watched her grow and reign over us. She has given birth to four children – Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward – all of whom have, in turn, produced the latest line of royal family members, as well as their fair share of controversy along the way. The huge outpouring of love, respect and devotion shown by the British public in 2012 during her Diamond Jubilee underlined that despite a lifetime which has seen the dignity of some members of the royal family brought into question at times, and a rise in more republican views, the nation continues to hold her close to their heart. Now 88, she continues to serve, continues to tour the UK, continues to represent the nation on a global platform. Long may she reign. mmm

A service which aims to resolve employment disputes swiftly without the need for a tribunal has got off to a successful start, according to the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS). The early conciliation scheme was launched at the beginning of April 2014 and became mandatory a month later, which means that anyone planning to bring proceedings at an employment tribunal must now notify ACAS of their intention in the vast majority of cases. ACAS is expected to publish the full results of a survey into the service this year but latest figures suggest the new regime is working, says employment law specialist Melissa Nelson. “There are, however, many factors which could contribute to claims not progressing to a tribunal,” says Melissa, a solicitor at leading Kent law firm Furley Page. “The ACAS survey will provide further information on what influences the decisions of those involved, including those who decide not to pursue their claim, so it will be interesting to see the results.” The latest ACAS statistics reveal that, between 6th April and 30th September 2014, more than 37,400 notifications were made to ACAS and that, between May (when conciliation became mandatory) and the end of September, the number of notifications has been fairly consistent at around 6,700 per month.

PEOPLE IN THE SOuTH EAST TRuST LOCAL buSINESSES MORE THAN buSINESS GENERALLY People in the south east have a dramatically higher level of trust in businesses in their area than they do in UK business as a whole. In the south east, 81% of people trust ‘local businesses’ (firms in their vicinity, big or small, that they interact with) compared with 57% who trust business overall. That matches a pattern for the whole UK where the figures were 81% and 57%. The CBI is encouraging individuals to recognise that contradiction and calling on businesses to go further in strengthening their engagement with the areas where they operate. It is also calling on businesses to tell the bigger story of their contribution to communities, jobs and investment more convincingly. Malcolm Hyde, CBI South East Director, said: “Businesses here have an opportunity using the warmth felt for them at a local level to improve feelings about UK business as a whole. “When people have direct experience of companies, for example as customers or employees, it’s overwhelmingly good and trust is high as a result. But opinions about business generally seem to have less solid roots. These views are more likely to be influenced by things people read or hear second hand and are a lot less positive. “As part of the CBI’s trust-in-business campaign, The Great Business Debate, we’re challenging individuals
to think about the contradiction in how they perceive businesses locally and business generally. We’re also calling on firms in the South East to build on the positive engagement they already have in the areas where they operate and to tell more convincingly the story of their impact on jobs, investment and taxes which is felt in communities all over the country.” In the South East more than two thirds of people (68%) agree they are more likely to trust a business with a strong presence in their area while only 7% feel local businesses don’t have a positive impact on their locality. Other key findings for the region include: 54% agree local businesses often support other businesses in the area by sourcing locally - only 9% disagree 56% agree businesses in my area are proud to be part of the community – only 7% disagree Creating and supporting local jobs is the main thing people in the region say ‘local businesses’ (firms in their vicinity, big or small, that they interact with) should be doing more of to build trust (66%) alongside providing good customer service (66%) The trust-building action they want more of from ‘national businesses’ (firms big and small operating across the UK) is customer service 69% and delivering what’s promised to the customer 64%.

SOuTH EAST FALLS OuT OF LOVE wITH MARRIAGE AS ALMOST TwO THIRDS OF uNMARRIED ADuLTS VOw THEY wILL NEVER TIE-THE kNOT New research published by the Co-operative Legal Services reveals that unmarried adults are falling out of love with the concept of marriage and those in the South East of England are least likely to ever enjoy a wedding day with almost two thirds (61%) unsure if they will ever get married. Whilst the research highlights that almost one third (32%) of unmarried adults in the South East have vowed to never tie the knot, almost one fifth (29%) are unsure if they ever will. Overall, the research has highlighted that over half (56%) of UK adults are unsure if they will ever get married. Almost a quarter (22%) of unmarried adults do not believe in tying the knot, with a further two out of five (21%) being put off because they think weddings are too expensive. Almost one in six, (15%) of those currently unmarried, state that they never want to get married because they don’t like to be the centre of attention, and one in ten admit the decision is out of their hands, as their partner doesn’t believe in marriage. Surprisingly, almost a tenth of unmarried adults (9%) have opted out of marriage in order to avoid their partner inheriting their possessions. Jenny Beck, Head of Family Law for the Co-operative Legal Services said: “Although it’s surprising that almost two thirds of unmarried adults in the South East are unsure if they will get married, each year we see an increase in the number of calls from unmarried cohabiting couples who want advice on how best to protect themselves and the run up to Christmas is usually our busiest time for these types of enquiries. A cohabiting or living together agreement is a legal document which can contain important agreements such as how each of you will contribute to rent, mortgage or household bills, how you will deal with joint bank accounts and how you will decide what happens to items you’ve bought together in the event that you do separate.

The year 2015 marks The 250Th anniversary of The launch of The world’s oldesT commissioned and mosT famous warship, hms vicTory On the 7th May 1765 HMS Victory was floated out of the Old Single Dock in Chatham’s Royal Dockyard. In the years to come, over an unusually long service, she would gain recognition, leading fleets in the American War of Independence (1775-1783), the French Revolutionary War (1793-1802) and the Napoleonic War (1803-1815). In October 1805, she achieved everlasting international fame as the flagship of Vice-Admiral Nelson in Britain’s greatest naval victory, the defeat of the French and Spanish at the Battle of Trafalgar. Chatham, Kent is intrinsically linked to HMS Victory: In addition to her launch at Chatham in 1765, Nelson joined his first ship HMS Raisonnable on the River Medway in 1771 and in the same year joined his uncle’s ship HMS Triumph at Chatham as a captain’s servant. HMS Victory’s fame is understandably thought of in terms of that fateful afternoon at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805, when Vice-Admiral Nelson was struck down on her deck - having both secured
the victory that would see Great Britain’s dominance at sea for more than a century to follow; and sealed that moment in history when man and ship became enshrined into Britain’s national conscience. However, there is much more to Victory than meets the eye. Generously lent by Her Majesty The Queen from the Royal Collection is the Nelson Bullet; the single lead musket ball which dealt the fatal blow on October 21st 1805 - mounted, with some remnants of gold lace from Admiral Nelson’s uniform. Richard Holdsworth MBE, Preservation and Education Director, Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust said; “From her quiet beginnings of being moored on the River Medway for over a decade after her launch, to being in the thick of battle and then on to Portsmouth harbour, HMS Victory had a long and varied career. While it is not possible to cover all areas in a single exhibition there are a number of insights that give a really different perspective on Chatham’s and the world’s most famous ship.”

Dr Robert Blyth, Senior Curator of World & Maritime History, National Maritime Museum said; “The National Maritime Museum is delighted to contribute to this exciting exhibition, at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. The story of Victory – from her launch at Chatham 250 years ago, through her dramatic and glorious active service, to her present-day iconic status – is a perfect entry point to the wider naval and maritime history of Britain”. Andrew Baines, Curator and Project Director, HMS Victory said; “‘We are delighted to be supporting The Historic Dockyard Chatham in the development of this exhibition. The National Museum of the Royal Navy is committed to exploring the wider history of HMS Victory across her 250 years. Chatham is the perfect place to begin an exploration of Victory’s story, and we hope that people will complete the story by visiting the ship in Portsmouth, where she has been a prominent tourist attraction for the past 190 years.”

The Sevenoaks Birdman With the many ancestral houses of Kent open to the public, a display of falconry is regarded as essential. Eagles, hawks and even vultures are regularly flown to entertain the public under the careful eyes of the handlers. To a certain generation however it was the expertise of Captain Charles William Robert Knight MC FRPS FZS and his eagle ‘Mr Ramshaw’ that thrilled the crowds of a bygone age. Robin J Brooks recalls ‘the birdman of Sevenoaks’ orn in Sevenoaks in 1884, Charles was educated at Sevenoaks School where his love of birds began. As a schoolboy he never really took an interest in football and cricket – his passion was for climbing trees and watching the habits of birds. He became absorbed in anything and everything to do with the countryside and it was a subject that fascinated him all his life. At age 16, he bought a wild hawk of his own and spent every moment of his spare time taming it. Together they would walk across miles of the Kentish countryside until reaching a deserted piece of woodland, he would un-hood the bird as one of his chums,
B
acting as a lure-man, would swing a dead mouse or rat to and fro to attract the hawk. Charles would then release the bird so that it could swoop on the lure, take it in its talons and devour it. Afterwards, it would return to its owner’s hand on the command of a whistle. With the outbreak of war in 1914, Charles joined the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment and was soon in France. He became a crack shot with a rifle, gaining him the nickname ‘Sniper Knight’ in the process. He went ‘over the top’ on several occasions and saw action at Ypres, Messines Ridge and the Somme, all of which gained him a Military Cross and a commission. He became a victim of a gas
attack which he survived and was later promoted to Captain in the 1st Battalion, Honourable Artillery Company taking a demonstration drill team to the USA in 1917. Continuing his interest in birds of prey, upon his return from America in 1924, he took part in a pageant held at Wembley Stadium with a display of falconry. Many in the audience had never witnessed such a performance between man and bird, with some questioning whether or not the birds were real! Assured by Captain Knight that they were, further shows saw him displaying various other birds of prey at venues all over the country. Now classed as the foremost authority on birds of prey, he began a series of lectures in

other Commonwealth countries and the USA. The purchase of a camera saw him become a filmmaker capturing many images of the life of kestrels and herons whilst sitting upon the branches of trees. This was also the time when Captain Knight began to look around for the king of birds, the golden eagle. His first acquisition was a female but despite his insistence, he failed to tame its fierce temperament. In a vicious attack on him, the bird scarred him for life and he finally returned her to her former home. Undeterred, he approached officials of London Zoo when he heard that the zoo was to be presented with a pair of golden eagles. He was given a female to train and, despite a lot of patience and understanding, he again failed. He exchanged her for the male and set about his new challenge with renewed vigour and determination. This time man and bird developed a rapport, mutual loyalty and trust. It was given the name ‘Mr Ramshaw’ by Captain Knight’s daughter, Jean. After his marriage to Eva Olive Margaret Bennet, the family moved to Sevenoaks and lived in a cottage named ‘Quebec Cottage’ which was tied to Earl Amherst’s estate, Montreal. Both of them fell in love with the cottage and the countryside surrounding it. Sadly
Eva died just two years after they married but Jean inherited many of the interests and mannerisms of them both, including a love of all animals. Mr Ramshaw adapted very quickly to an urban existence and soon was on show at various events. He responded to a series of whistles and replied with a terrifying screech before going through his routine. Captain Knight took great delight in showing the eagle to an admiring public. On the Captain’s command to ‘spread your wings’, Mr Ramshaw would rear up and show his magnificent wing span, unaware that this was accomplished by Captain Knight turning his wrist upon which the eagle sat. He would do this as he gave the verbal command, making Mr Ramshaw feel off-balance so that he spread his wings to adjust it! With the lectures and appearances becoming even more popular, it was not long before both of them began to appear in films. Shot in Scotland ‘The Filming of the Golden Eagle’ was received with success, followed by a book which outlined the experiences of filming with an eagle. In 1933, Captain Knight was a falconry advisor to the film ‘The Private Life of Henry VIII’, a film that gave the bird even greater coverage. Whilst the Battle of Britain raged overhead Kent in
1940, the pair were on-route to America to undertake another tour During the Atlantic crossing on a Dutch liner the ‘SS Volendam’, a torpedo struck the ship and the order was given to abandon. With Mr Ramshaw chained in the hold of the ship, to his great distress Captain Knight had to take to one of the lifeboats. A Royal Navy destroyer later picked the passengers up and took them to Scotland where the most remarkable reunion was to take place several days later. A call from the shipping company told Captain Knight that the ‘Volendam’ had not sunk, but had been towed to a Scottish river. There they found Mr Ramshaw still in his cage and nonetheless worse for his experience. By the 1950’s their fame had spread around the world. An appearance in a film called ‘Geordie’ starring Bill Travers and Alastair Sim, saw a return to the Scottish Highlands, though in this instance it was Mr Ramshaw that took centre stage. This was followed by further travel to many far eastern countries and a total of 20 visits to America. On one occasion – much to the enjoyment of New Yorkers – Mr Ramshaw escaped his tether and flew around the city until, eventually, he became so hungry that he could no longer resist Captain Knight’s bait!
In the last few months of Mr Ramshaw’s life, a photographic company visited Quebec Cottage to record this unique partnership on film. A team from ‘The London Illustrated News’ also captured many beautiful moments, the one outstanding being when my uncle George Alderson, a close friend of the Captain, dressed as a laundryman delivering laundry. The photo shows him cowering in the corner, whilst Mr Ramshaw proves he is a better guardian of property than a dog! Sadly some months later the eagle died of old age. It was a bereavement like no other for Captain Knight. He survived by only a few years and died whilst on a trip to Kenya. His Sevenoaks home, Quebec Cottage, was later demolished to make way for the Sevenoaks by-pass that cut across the land

once owned by Earl Amherst. In looking for an epitaph to this unusual story I could find no finer than the preface included in the book written by Captain Knight and titled ‘All British Eagle’, part of which I quote below. “There can never be another Mr Ramshaw. What a personality; what poise; what dignity! And how tremendously alive he is. Nothing seems to escape his crystal-clear eyes or for that matter his keen ears”. Notes :- Birds of prey also known as ‘raptors’ hunt and feed on other animals. The term ‘raptor’ is derived from the Latin word ‘rapere’, meaning to feed or take by force. These birds are characterised by keen vision that allows them to detect prey during flight. BY ROBIN J BROOKS

Top spots for a sprinkle of romance
With National Trust Here are ten idyllic havens of love and romance, beautiful places that are just right for a romantic stroll, spending some special time together and escaping from the norm this Valentines Day
Polesden Lacey, Surrey
King George VI and our late Queen Mother spent part of their honeymoon nestled here, amidst the beautiful landscape of the North Downs. What’s more, this spectacular place is still alive with the spirit of its most celebrated owner, Mrs Ronald Greville, whose zest for life and vivacious sparkle made for a whirlwind of weekend parties and the odd spot of romance too. Learning about the royal romantic connections and taking in its charming formal gardens, including the stunning rose garden, is the perfect way to spend Valentine’s.
Claremont Landscape Garden, Surrey
The Claremont estate was also the setting for royal romance, as in 1816 it was given as a wedding gift to Princess Charlotte of Wales, the heir to the throne as the only child of
George IV. The Princess lived there until she died and the estate was later passed on to Queen Victoria. Lovers can walk hand-in-hand around this beautiful landscape garden and its serpentine lake, stopping off for a picnic in its unusual and enchanting grass amphitheatre.
Wimpole Hall, Cambridgeshire
Cambridgeshire’s grandest country house was home to a man who had a very important part to play in Britain’s romantic history. Phillip, the first Earl of Hardwicke, purchased Wimpole in 1740 and 15 years later played an instrumental part in the passing of the Marriage Act of 1754 - establishing the legal basis for the conduct and definition of marriages in England and Wales.
mmm 93
Stourhead, Wiltshire
Enjoy a day together exploring the timeless wonder of this fairy-tale estate. Take a romantic stroll along the lake, passing temples, follies and grottos. Then, finish with the awe-inspiring views from the Temple of Apollo - a place so romantic, it was used as the location for Mr. Darcy’s declaration of love for Elizabeth in the 2008 film adaptation of Pride & Prejudice.
Dinefwr Park and Castle, Carmarthenshire
A magical land of power and influence for more than 2,000 years, Dinefwr Park and Castle is an iconic place in the history of Wales. The magnificent park stretches over 480 acres towards the bank of the Tywri, with water meadows and oak woodland home to more than 100 fallow deer and a herd of rare White Park Cattle - making Dinefwr a breathtaking backdrop for a Valentine’s stroll. Romantic moments include the thrilling views from the top of castle, which could make the perfect proposal spot.
Killerton, Devon
Nestled within this tranquil spot amongst the majestic lawns and sweeping parkland are stories from the lives of the Acland family, which have their very own sprinkle of romance. For 17-year-old Thomas Acland, it was love at first sight when he was introduced to Lydia Hoare in 1804. The teenagers immediately embarked upon an adolescent love affair and, at the age of 21, it was decided that they would be married.
Stowe Landscape Gardens, Buckinghamshire
The scale, grandeur and beauty of Stowe has inspired writers, philosophers, artists and indeed all who have visited since the 18thcentury, making it the perfect romantic getaway this Valentine’s. From spring time walks through follies and temples, to sitting by the lake and breathing in the tranquillity, romance will flourish at every turn.
Gibside, Tyne & Wear
This is the perfect place to take a Valentine who really loves the great outdoors. Gibside is a ‘grand design’ of spectacular sights. Take time to explore the ruins of the orangery, bathhouse and hall, stroll down the oak-lined Long Walk, then take in the dramatic Column of Liberty that rises above the treetops at over 40 metres high. Spoil loved ones at the Gibside Larder, with the region’s finest award-winning food on sale.
Lyme Park, Cheshire
Lying on the edge of the Peak District, nestling within sweeping moorland, lies the magnificent Lyme Park. Its wild remoteness and powerful beauty contrast with one of the most famous country house images in England. As the backdrop to where Darcy meets Elizabeth, in the ever-remembered TV adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, romance oozes from this glorious setting. In spring-time the wooded slopes and rolling moorland, grazed by ancient herds of red deer, will give Valentine’s couples a real feeling of being miles from anywhere - in their very own romance classic.
Fountains Abbey, North Yorkshire
The breathtaking ruins of this Cistercian abbey, combined with its Royal Water Garden and the atmospheric Serpentine tunnel, are guaranteed to capture the imagination and inspire romance this Valentine’s Day. For couples looking for the perfect romantic wedding venue, the Grade 1 listed Great Chamber at Fountains Hall is licensed for civil ceremonies, whilst the ruins provide beautiful photo opportunities. Tarot reading for February birthdays: Star Signs that fall under February are: Aquarius (21st Jan – 19th Feb) or Pisces (20th Feb – 20th Mar) Typical Aquarius Characters - Look at life in a very different way to other people around them. They can be eccentric and unpredictable. There is never a dull moment with them around. Typical Piscean Characters –Can hide behind their smile, can be theatrical and forgetful but they care deeply and feel other people’s emotions. They are bubbly, flirtatious and scatty but full of energy. LOVE: You are closing ranks on your heart at this time as there is so much that you need to work out in your own thoughts and emotions. I can see that you have tried sorting through these emotions on your own but you now need the help and support from others that care about you. You have been in the middle of a power struggle that isn’t linked to you directly but you have been brought into it by a third person. You will do the best you can to understand each side but in the end you want an easy life so you may just walk away from both of them. Finances / Work: I can see that there has been a dominant person around you who has tried to manipulate you into doing what they want you to do and it wasn’t the best thing for you. I see that you had to walk away from this person and deal with things yourself. You are learning new skills and you are also gaining more knowledge with old skills too. I see there is a new opportunity coming up that will require you to use these skills. You are going to take a leap of faith and go for it linking to this opportunity. I see hard work ahead but all will work out well.

Capricorn 22nd Dec – 20th Jan Love/Family: You will let someone close to you fly freely and you won’t hold them back. There has always been concern about them in the past not making the right choices, but it’s time now that they expand their life and see what comes of it. Work/Finances: There will be some really good news regarding your home and your security around the middle of February 2015 which will make all your hard work seem like it’s paying off. You are keeping your sense of humour going even through tough times and this helps other people around you as well as yourself.
Aquarius 21st Jan – 19th Feb Love/Family: There is emptiness within your heart that can’t be replaced; and you need the support of friends and family. You are now building up your energy and feeling stronger, and you will become that support mechanism for everyone else soon enough, but stay focused on healing yourself for now. Work/Finances: One project/job/event is finished and you are about to start something new. There are ways of getting the new job done without being dominant and you use your sense of humour to lighten up the atmosphere around you. Your attitude will be appreciated by your colleagues and will make the job more efficient.
Pisces 20th Feb – 20th Mar Love/Family: An emotionally charged situation surrounds you and you find yourself drawn into it. Part of you wants to heal the world and make everything fluffy but the other half of you is sick of this drama and you want to regain a tranquil feeling in your life. Work/Finances: Your work/financial life is going well and you are enjoying your success over the last month or so. A character close to you is jealous of your success and this person’s finding it difficult not to show it on the outside. I can feel that there are financial decisions that you need to make regarding the future.
Aries 21st March – 20th April Love/Family: You have travelled a long road, seeking that, which you know is your right to have. We can in life, only wish for the type of love and not necessarily connect it to a certain person. Be open to receiving the type of love you deserve and you shall have it. Work/Finances: Looking into just one project at a time is the key to success. You have been dwelling on too many issues that will never come to fruition. It’s the right time to put those dead ends in the recycle bin and look at the winners. Look after your own interests for a while.
Taurus 21st April – 21st May Love/Family: New chapters begin in your emotional life and we need to say goodbye to the past and understand what we have learnt from it. I can see a mischievous character around you who is trying to get your attention. You are trying to ignore this person but secretly you find the attention flattering. Work/Finances: You have a new venture starting in your financial/work life now and this is going to be something that is just for you. You will have to become more confident and you will have to push your boundaries, the results will be amazing. You have been looking for something like this for some time and now it’s here!
Gemini 22nd May – 21st June Love/Family: A tearful character close to you is making everyone feel sorry for them, but you are seeing a different angle to this situation and you are not so ready to forgive and forget. You feel let down; you have not been appreciated for the help that you have given in the past. This tearful character should learn lessons from their behaviour. Work/Finances: You have lots of inspired ideas about your own hopes, dreams and wishes. You have been carrying the work load for other people to protect them but you are going to have to shift this back to them as is getting far too heavy now.
Cancer 22nd June – 23rd July Love/Family: You have been given the freedom or have the desire to do what you like when you like. Things have been intense and you have felt restrictions either that have been placed on you by yourself or by someone that you care about. You have been given a “Get out of Jail Free Card!” Are you prepared to use it? Work/Finances: ILife is upside down and your patience is being tested. You are looking at the situation from many different angles which has given you a great deal of insight and wisdom. Sometimes those delays in life are also lessons for us to advance our knowledge.
Leo 24th July – 23rd Aug Love/Family: You are in need of clearing the air with someone who has taken something innocent and turned it into something else. There is upset over the misunderstanding and you are worried that if you don’t clear the air it will get worse. Work/Finances: Success! Achievement of a goal! There is a wonderful feeling of triumph and happiness around you and you have recognition for a job well done. A character who tends to live in the past and is stuck in their ways is actually giving you a compliment which doesn’t happen often.
Virgo 24th Aug – 23rd Sept Love/Family: You feel like something is missing in your personal life and it’s hard for you to grasp exactly what it is or how you go about dealing with this emotional pain. You have been holding on to the past for quite some time and you now feel you need to work out how to heal your heart. Work/Finances: There have been plans to travel or to move and you are looking at different forms of transport and prices. You should be celebrating as you have achieved so much already in your work/financial life, that you sometimes forget or take for granted. Well done!
Libra 2th Sept – 23rd Oct Love/Family: You are in a very tricky situation and it’s like you are in the middle of a battle between three very strong characters. You are being pulled into this and you feel that there is no way of backing out due to lack of communication. You believe in loyalty it’s a shame that others don’t. Work/Finances: There is a person who is pushing you to do more with your life and they mean well but they won’t let up on lecturing you to do better. I see paperwork like an application form or a C.V. Although this makes you nervous you are going to do it, so well done you!
Scorpio 24th Oct – 22nd Nov Love/Family: You have been through a lot of heartache recently which has left you feeling drained and needing to replenish your energies. I can see tranquillity now like the calm after the storm. You are getting used to your own emotions again and getting back into the rhythm of doing whatever you like to do and whatever makes you happy. Work/Finances: You are thinking about your own hopes, dreams and wishes and there is a fine line between thinking and making it happen. Thinking about your dreams long and hard enough will bring them to you so wish and dream away.
Sagittarius 23rd Nov – 21st Dec Love/Family: You have high expectations in love and what you expect from people close to you. You can get disappointed when others don’t have the same principles as you. You will learn how to let go and not be so in control. Work/Finances: A self-employed/ boss type of person close to you is going to keep information back that you need to know. You will have to ask the right questions and then all will be revealed. You are worried that you are going to get bored easily and this is something that you don’t want.

John Shuttleworth, Theatre Royal Margate, 13th February s heard on BBC Radio 4’s John Shuttleworth’s Lounge Music. Versatile singer/organist, John Shuttleworth, wants to share fond memories of his favourite past weekends. However, a typo on the poster (“weekend” has become “wee Ken”), means John is obliged to spend the evening paying homage to his next-door neighbour and sole agent - the diminutive Ken Worthington. With any luck, John will end up doing both. In this brand new show, Shuttleworth (“Sheffield’s funniest man” The Times) will perform classic tunes such as Two Margarines, Disaffected Youth and I Can’t Go Back To Savoury Now as well as newer ditties like Whatever Happened to Vince Hill?, Midweek, and Relatives In Rotherham. John Shuttleworth is the creation of actor/musician Graham Fellows, whose other incarnations include Brian Appleton, Dave Tordoff, and Jilted John, as whom he had a number four pop hit in 1978. Graham lives in London and Lincolnshire and has no hobbies, but would like one at some point in his life. John Shuttleworth’s Lounge Music will shortly be available on DVD, as will a book of The Shuttleworths complete radio scripts.
