Flight Fuji - Light House Spring 2016, 1B (For CISC Steel Competition) Advisor: Terri Boake Skill Set: Rhino 3d, Adobe Ilustrator, Photoshop, Maxwell Studio Collaborator: Nick Lupescu
“Flight Fuji approaches the theme of assembly through the use of biomimicry: the rigid steel structure is constructed and assembled in the same way that nearby trees and birds come together to form complex compositions that can be made of identical components. Placed at the shore of Lake Kawaguchi in Japan, the structure is oriented towards Mount Fuji, framing the mountain and providing a space for visitors to take a moment to appreciate the landscape. Columns are grouped together with bolted tension cables creating a parallel environment to the adjacent cherry blossom forest. Meanwhile, the tension cables meet at elliptical steel bird-houses which, from a distance, might even be mistaken for a flock of birds.

The flight fuji light house holds its structure primarily due to columns attached to one other by bolted tension cables. These columns work together to support bird nests, with three entry points for birds, which have installed in them flourecent LEDs that give off light during the night time. Allowing the whole assemblage to work as a light house for passing ships near Lake Kawaguchi. The light house is made up of two floors which are supported by hanger cables, allowing for visitors to walk through the forest of lights.

Water Street Residence Winter 2016, 1B Advisor: Donald McKay Skill Set: Rhino 3d, Adobe Ilustrator, Photoshop, Maxwell Studio Collaborators: Salman Rauf, Elizabeth Yeoh and Owen Yang
Located near the intersection of Water St and Dickson St, the “water street residence” takes full advantage of the narrow space it finds itself in, next to the Galt Library. The three storey building is divided by a large “utility” wall which separates the space both on the ground floor level and the two storeys above. This “utility” wall has each room “carved” inside it to widen the hallway, ultimately saving space for the residents on all the floors. On the top two floors use for all the people living in the residence. The kitchen, dining, and living room are all located on the first floor for the residents to share, creating a community and strenghthening are four units, each housing two residents, while on the ground floor lies an area of common the relationship between them. In conclusion, the “water street residence” is a compact and comfortable space which also hold a breathtaking view of the Grand River for its inhabitants to enjoy.

Saint Clair and Pinewood Avenue Library Winter 2016, 1B Advisor: Donald McKay Skill Set: Rhino 3d, Adobe Ilustrator, Photoshop, Maxwell Studio
The St. Clair and Pinewood Ave Library is a micro-institution located in a primarily commercial area of Toronto. The building has a grand entrance leading into a lower level which holds a play area for children. With almost every wall covered with bookshelves and a circulation which goes around the building, The St Clair and Pinewood Ave Library gives a dynamic experience to those using the space. The second floor, which is primarily an area of study for adults, also holds a lecture hall which could also transfor into a gallery space for any special events. This is done with the help of the sawtooth skylights which cover the roof of the building.

Urban Retreat Fall 2016, 1A Advisor: Rick Andrighetti Skill Set: Model Making, Hand Drafting, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
The urban retreat building serves as an escape from the busy urban city environment acting as a haven for artists and creators alike. The project is composed of both open and closed space: The first floor serves as a court open to the outdoor environment while the top floor is an enclosed space of self-cultivation for two people. A symmetrical plan of the building provides its occupants with an equal amount of work and dictates their relationship; this is done by guiding the inhabitants to meet and part their ways at various locations of the building.

Resolute Research Station Spring 2016, 1B Advisor: Terri Boake Skill Set: Rhino 3d, Adobe Ilustrator, Photoshop, Maxwell Studio Collaborator: Nick Lupescu
Located in one of the coldest inhabitated places in Canada, Resolute, Nunavut, The off-grid Resolute research station uses environmentally friendly design to create a space in which researchers can safely stay in. With the use of passive heating, cooling, a stable and comfortable room temperature is achieved. A photovoltaic system along with some wind tubines to gather renewable energy, and vaccum tube collectors to heat the collected outsourced water, this off-grid research station acts as a temporary home for any researchers staying in the cold and harsh environment of Resolute, Nunavut.
