01. Park of Podzol: A Community Forest
Summer 2018, 2B Advisor: Jane Hutton Skill Set: Rhino 3d Adobe Ilustrator, Photoshop, Vray
Found along the peripheral of the future housing development in Brantford Ontario, Park Podzol acts as a quick escape into sublime nature for its loca forest park is a duality of two forest types with different height elevations – each with its own natural characteristics to entice specific audiences. A narrow pathw to the sidewalk of the suburbs provides access to the forested areas and leads you to multiple destinations found within the park. The most important destination nal house in the direct middle of the forest featuring a camp fire area, a shared kitchen and public washrooms. Constructed out of wood to reflect its environmen house includes an intimate primitive hut providing a view outward and resembles the familiar aboriginal gathering space. Following the pathway north leads you to increasing privacy and solitude within the sublime forest – spaces to mediate, think and remove oneself from the cognitively overly stimulating lifestyle of the 21s

02. Kawaguchi Light House
Term: Spring 2016, 1B (For CISC Steel Competition) Advisor: Terri Boake Skill Set: Rhino 3d, Adobe Ilustrator, Photoshop, Maxwell Studio In Collaboration With: Nick Lupescu
Kawaguchi Light House approaches the theme of assembly through the use of biomimicry: the rigid steel structure is constructed and assembled in the same way that nearby trees and birds come together to form complex compositions that can be made of identical components. Placed at the shore of Lake Kawaguchi in Japan, the structure is oriented towards Mount Fuji, framing the mountain and providing a space for visitors to take a moment to appreciate the landscape. Columns are grouped together with bolted tension cables creating a parallel environment to the adjacent cherry blossom forest. Meanwhile, the tension cables meet at elliptical steel bird-houses which, from a distance, might even be mistaken for a flock of birds.

Assemblage Diagram The Kawaguchi Light House house holds its structure primarily due to columns attached to each other with bolted tension cables. These columns work together to support the bird nests, installed with flourecent LEDs, which illuminate the structure during the night time. This therefore allows the installation to function as a light house for passing ships near Lake Kawaguchi. The light house is also made up of two glass floors, with the top floor being supported by hanger cables, allowing visitors to experience the forest of lights and bird nests, bringing them closer to the environment the structure pertains to.

03. Water Street: Residence
Winter 2016, 1B Advisor: Donald McKay Skill Set: Rhino 3d, Adobe Ilustrator, Photoshop, Maxwell Studio Collaborators: Salman Rauf, Elizabeth Yeoh and Owen Yang
Located near the intersection of Water and Dickson Street, the “Residence” takes full advantage of the narrow space it finds itself in, right next to the Galt Library. The three storey building is divided by a large “utility” wall which separates the space both on the ground floor level and the two storeys above. This “utility” wall has the space of each room “carved” inside it to widen the hallway, ultimately saving space for the residents on all the floors. On the top two floors use for all the people living in the residence. The kitchen, dining, and living room are all located on the first floor for the residents to share, creating a community and strenghthening are four units, each housing two residents, while on the ground floor lies an area of common the relationship between them. In conclusion, the “water street residence” is a compact and comfortable space which also hold a breathtaking view of the Grand River for its inhabitants to enjoy.

Spring 2016, 1B Advisor: Terri Boake Skill Set: Rhino 3d, Adobe Ilustrator, Photoshop, Maxwell Studio Collaborator: Nick Lupescu
Found in one of the coldest inhabitated places in Canada, Resolute, Nunavut, The off-grid Resolute research station uses environmentally friendly design to create a space in which researchers can safely stay in. With the use of passive heating, cooling, a stable and comfortable room temperature is achieved. A photovoltaic system along with some wind tubines to gather renewable energy, and vaccum tube collectors to heat the collected outsourced water, this off-grid research station acts as a temporary home for any researchers staying in the cold and harsh environment of Resolute, Nunavut.

Perspective Render Resolute is one of Canada’s northernmost communities and is second only to Grise Fiord on Ellesmere Island (Alert and Eureka are higher North but are not considered towns). It is also one of the coldest inhabited places in the world, with an average yearly temperature of 15.7 °C (3.7 °F). Like in most other northern communities, the roads and most of the terrain are all gravel.

A university campus should create a community by means of a shared network of peer to peer connections. This campus creates a bilateral flow of information among educators and students, and among students themselves. These peer to peer connections encourage positive mental health and more effective learning through active participation. Programs for learning, living and activity are distributed in an array to decentralize amenities and learning within the residences themselves. Various programs are brought together to encourage working collaboration and expose students to areas of study that are potentially unfamiliar. Visual connection to different areas of study, gatherings and work over time creates a greater sense of a collective belonging. Sporadic circulation is not only necessary to connect the array of programs, but also creates the opportunity for chance encounters of other students. Each residence has access to spaces for health, study, work, activity and gathering. The convenience of proximity to creative outlets, studies and activity boosts engagement. The result of continuous engagement (active or passive) is the development of a wide personal knowledge base and growth of skill.

Fall 2017, 2A Advisor: Derreck Revington Skill Set: Rhino 3d, Adobe Ilustrator, Photoshop, Maxwell Studio
Located in the middle of “This must be the place”, in the “Dominion”, you watch as you are being watched. You are part of a space arrayed radially, in the shape of a Greek democracy. In such a space, a community is formed where events take place involving everyone’s attention and everyone’s input. A place once used as a meeting space for diplomats of the abandoned city, the “Dominion” now acts as a stage for performances and a gathering space for community events. Standing in the space you might feel the heaviness. The weight on your shoulders engendered by the concrete niches, the surrounding Roman arches, pertaining to a space of surveillance and the large dome over your head with holes formed by the temporal decay, shooting sharp rays of light onto the ground. The niches stacked on top of each other in an irregular fashion are arrayed radially around a central space. The houses, like those in Pueblo, are vernacular. Circulation through space involves the use of ladders and stairs. To enter a niche, one may have to go through the doorway or the trapdoor located on top of a niche.

During my time at TCA Architects, I worked closely with the projects managers on completing the design and construction documents of the Haldimand County City Hall. I engaged in discussions about the design of the building primarily concerning the facade exterior as well as the Council chamber. I was also responsible for the completion and organization of AutoCAD drawing sets including plans, elevations, sections and detailed blow-ups. I gained experience in the workflow of an architectural office and further developed the fundamental skills needed in creating a true architectural drawing. The Haldimand County City Hall is a three storey building that will serve as the central administration building for Haldimand County, functioning as a Town Hall for the 45,000 person county. The building has been sensitively scaled and massed to ensure the contextual fit in a small town with adjacent single family dwellings.
