Welcome from the Chairman

I am delighted to welcome you to the 2024 running of the Bahrain International Trophy, the showpiece event in our racing calendar.

This season marks an exciting new chapter in the evolution of horse racing in Bahrain as for the first time the Bahrain International Trophy will be run under floodlights, a bold initiative that elevates the spectacle of racing in the Kingdom to a new level.

Last season’s Bahrain International Trophy was a landmark moment, being the first running following its upgrade to Group 2 status, and it produced a memorable victory for Spirit Dancer. We are delighted to welcome back owners Sir Alex Ferguson and Ged Mason and trainer Richard Fahey, as Spirit Dancer seeks to make history by becoming the first horse to win the race twice.

The 2023 Bahrain International Trophy was followed by a wonderful season of racing, the highlight of which was the rise of Isle Of Jura from Bahrain Turf Series runner to King’s Cup winner and then Royal Ascot winner.

The introduction of floodlights together with this year’s expansion of the Bahrain Turf Series are intended to make racing in Bahrain an even more attractive and compelling proposition to both our international and local visitors. Both initiatives reflect how far racing in Bahrain has come, as well as being an indicator of our ambitions to progress further.

HIS HIGHNESS

Promoting Bahrain Abroad

The Kingdom of Bahrain has a significant race sponsorship portfolio in Europe, the purpose of which is to promote both racing and business in Bahrain.

1 HE Noor Alkhulaif, Bahrain Economic Development Board CEO, presents the trophies at Newmarket to jockey Ryan Moore, co-owner Paul Smith and Coolmore’s representative Kevin Buckley following the victory of Whistlejacket i n The Kingdom Of Bahrain July Stakes.

2 Whistlejacket, one of Europe’s leading two-year-olds, winner of the The Kingdom Of Bahrain July Stakes at Newmarket.

3 The winning post at Newmarket.

The portfolio includes the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, three races at the prestigious July Festival at Newmarket and sponsorship of one of the world’s leading jockeys, Tom Marquand.

4 Economics holds off the challenge of the previous year’s winner, Auguste Rodin, to win The Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown

Held in September at Leopardstown Racecourse in Ireland, The Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes is ranked one of the top ten races in the world and the highest rated race run over 2000m.

This year’s race was won by Economics, owned by His Highness Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, trained by William Haggas and ridden by Tom Marquand.

Isle Of Jura

From the Bahrain Turf Series to Royal Ascot

Last season’s ‘break-out’ star was undoubtedly Victorious Racing’s Isle Of Jura. Over the course of six months, Isle Of Jura progressed from Bahrain Turf Series handicaps to winning the Kingdom’s premier races and then on to Royal Ascot glory.

Owned by HH Shaikh Nasser bin

Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa’s Victorious Racing, trained by George Scott and ridden by Callum Shepherd, Isle Of Jura won four of his five starts in Bahrain, including the prestigious Crown Prince’s Cup, cruising to victory in HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup before rounding off the season with victory in The King’s Cup.

His progress continued at Royal Ascot with an emotional win in the Group 2 Hardwick Stakes in front of a sell-out crowd of 70,000 on the final day of the festival.

The 2024 Bahrain International Trophy –the leading contenders

This year’s running of the Bahrain International Trophy features horses representing six different racing jurisdictions as a truly international field gathers to compete in the Kingdom’s most valuable race.

The Group 2 race, worth $1million, has attracted runners from Great Britain, Ireland, France and Japan, as well as the UAE and local Bahrain trained horses. The field includes last year’s winner, Spirit Dancer, along with this year’s Arlington Million winner, Nations Pride, and the Japanese trained Group 1 winner, Killer Ability.

Travelling from Newmarket, England to Bahrain is the only three-year-old in the line-up, Lead Artist, who will be owner-breeder Juddmonte’s first runner in the Bahrain International Trophy. The colt won the Group 3 Darley Stakes at Newmarket over 1800m on his last start, a victory that

in the eyes of his trainers, John and Thady Gosden, confirmed his suitability for today’s 2000m race, and the Gosden team are hoping Lead Artist can bring them a change of luck.

“”

The Bahrain International Trophy is an event that has gone from strength to strength over the past five years. To date, we have run three horses in the race, all of whom have finished second.

Lead Artist improved again for the step up in trip in the Darley Stakes and the fast ground should suit. It’s a race where you need a bit of pace. Kieran Shoemark has ridden him in all his starts and knows him well.

THADY GOSDEN

Co-Trainer of Lead Artist

Lead Artist wins the Darley Stakes at Newmarket on his most recent run

Among the more experienced and well-travelled campaigners taking on Lead Artist are Nations Pride and Alflaila. The only Godolphin owned runner in the race and the mount of William Buick, Nations Pride has run three times this season, all in North America, most recently winning the Grade 1 Arlington Million in August.

The British season ended on a high for trainer Owen Burrows and the Shadwell Estate operation with Anmaat winning the Group 1 Champion Stakes at Ascot and the pair team up again today with Alflaila. The lightly raced, talented five-year-old will be ridden by regular partner, Jim Crowley.

Al-Khalifa’s Victorious Racing have enjoyed a memorable year with notable successes in both Bahrain and Europe. Representing Victorious Racing in today’s race is Calif, trained in France by Carlos and Yann Lerner. The six-year-old has shown improved form this season including winning a Group 1 in Germany.

The locally trained runners are headed by the improving four-yearold, Sovereign Spirit, who chased home Isle Of Jura in The King’s Cup in March and was impressive in winning the feature race on the opening day of the season.

Introducing Japan’s contenders Killer Ability and

Yamanin Sympa

This year’s field for the Bahrain International Trophy includes two runners from Japan. Both horses are trained by Takashi Saito and are sons of the late super-stallion, Deep Impact.

They are the first Japanese trained horses to run in the race since Deidre in 2020, who at the time was based in the UK.

A Group 1 winner as a juvenile, the five-year-old Killer Ability already has form in the Middle East, having split two of today’s rivals, Spirit Dancer and Calif, when finishing second in the Neom Turf Cup over 2100m in Saudi Arabia in February. Killer Ability will be ridden today by British champion jockey, Oisin Murphy.

Japanese racing expert, Masamitsu Tsuchiya says of Killer Ability: “His strengths are that he holds a good position in the first half of the race and then extends his run strongly in the final straight. Having finished a close second to Spirit Dancer in Saudi I fully expect another big run from him in the Bahrain International Trophy.”

Masamitsu Tsuchiya says of Yamanin Sympa: “His racecourse debut was very late for a Japanese racehorse, in June at the age of three. By March the following year he had won three races. All of his wins have come on tracks with long final straights and the track at REHC should suit him well. Trainer Takashi Saito is confident that both horses will go well on this trip to Bahrain.”

Yamanin Sympa

LIMITLESS CULTURE,

How to read a Racecard

Racecards allow racegoers to study the form and find out more about the horses that are racing in front of them.

There are usually 7-8 races taking place on each raceday and a racecard can appear quite confusing with a whole host of numbers, letters and facts to decipher. This quick guide has everything you need to understand and read a racecard.

01 Race number | Time | Title

The number of the race. Time the race is due off. Race name usually including sponsor.

02 Course | race distance

The track the horses are running on. The distance the horses will travel from start to finish during the race displayed in meters.

03 Jockey colours

The Owners colours that the Jockey will wear aboard the horse whilst racing. Each set of colours are unique to an owner. In the event of the owner having two runners the owner will change the cap colour so the judge can distinguish between the owner’s multiple runners. In some cases they may have more than one design of colours registered.

04 Horse’s saddlecloth number

The saddle cloth number assigned to the horse for the race. This is sorted by highest weight and then assigned alphabetically if horses are due to carry the same weight for handicap ratings.

05 Weight

This is the amount of weight each horse carries including the Jockey. If the Jockey holds an apprentice licence (and they can claim in the race) the weight with the claim will be displayed in brackets.

06 Horse’s name

Name of the horse displayed in English and Arabic within the racecard.

07 Horse’s age

Age of the horse at the time of the race.

08 Form guide

The previous horses performances with details of date, distance, jockey, weight carried, race type, equipment worn i.e V for visor, placings, ratings, time, winners time, margins beaten or distance won by.

09 Stall number

The stall numbers are randomly generated by the racing administration system for all races apart from the Bahrain International Trophy where a manual stalls draw is completed. The stalls draw dictates which gate number the horse will start the race from.

10 Breeding – Sire - Dam - Damsire

Sire (the father of the horse)

Dam (the mother of the horse) Damsire (the father of the dam)

11 Owner

The owner/s of the horse.

12 Jockey’s name

The rider of the horse.

13 Breeder

The person/s responsible for breeding the horse.

14 Trainer

The person responsible for the training and welfare of the horse.

15 Headgear

Headgear is used by trainers to try and help a horse’s overall performance. Headgear is displayed in the racecard as follows:

B = blinkers | E = eye hood

EC = eye cover | ES = Eye Shield | H = Hood

HT = Hood and tongue tie | T = Tongue-tie

CP = Cheek Pieces | V = Visor

16 Rating

This is the horses current handicap rating for the race. On the form guide you can see previous ratings the horse has run off for its historic performances. A handicap rating is assigned to a horse by a Handicapper.

Group2 $1 MILLION PRIZE FUND

Spirit Dancer’s quick step to victory

The 2023 running of the Bahrain International Trophy was the first following the race’s elevation to Group 2 status and it produced a memorable result as Spirit Dancer, co-owned and bred by Sir Alex Ferguson scored a decisive victory to land the winner’s share of the 1$M prize fund.

Prompting jubilant scenes from connections, Spirit Dancer, ridden by Oisin Orr and trained by Richard Fahey, came clear of his rivals, leaving Israr and Point Lonsdale to fight out the finish for second and third in what was the strongest renewal yet in the race’s five-year history.

Speaking after the race, Sir Alex Ferguson, co-owner of Spirit Dancer with Ged Mason and Peter Done, said: “That is the best moment of my racing life, no doubt.

“When he hit the front, Ged (Mason) just jumped on me! 100 yards out he looked like he was going to win but I didn’t want to count my chickens. I was just praying and he carried me over the line with him.”

This year Spirit Dancer and his connections are back to defend their crown in a bid to become to the first horse to win the Bahrain International Trophy twice.

The race had been the plan for some time but to win it was a lovely surprise considering the quality of the opposition. Realistically we didn’t think we would win, but Spirit Dancer and Oisin pulled it out of the fire and in the end he won well.
