Project

Brief

To conduct a post occupancy survey and design a housing and commercial complex for redevelopment of Sujata Apartments, a co-operative housing society.

Location

Pune, India

Keywords

Softwares used

Sujata Apartments is a co-operative housing society in Pune, constructed more than 40 years ago. The society has seen generations of people celebrating festivals together, children playing together, and elders walking and spending time together. But due to its outdated design, the members are facing a load of problems, compelling them to leave their homes. Redevelopment of this complex is of utmost importance to bring this family together once again. The new society is designed considering the need of all generations and by analysing the issues faced in the existing complex. There is 2 storey podium with amenities, divided into 5 zones: Fitness, Children’s play area, Commercial, Public and a vehicular zone(for dropping off); to keep the activities seperate. On top of the podium there is a walking path and plenty of seating spaces for poeple to spend time. This design keeps the vehicular and the pedestrian circulation completely seperate for the comfort of the residents. Apart from this, there are 2 common floors in the 2 residential blocks, consisting of the refuge area, workspaces, lounges, etc. The proposal balances the benefits of the builder and the residents of the society, and it complements the context of the site.

Somewhere within the fast-paced world of today, we have lost touch with ourselves, and instead of trying to live our lives we all try to race and excel at something that is someone else’s interest. While goal chasing is an accepted reality in the world, it is not unusual to face a burnout every now and then. To vent this burn, a disconnect is needed which materializes itself in the form of a vacation. But with an entire world population pushed to their limits with work, this collective travel can cause rupture to the planet. So, it is important that the tourism sector become sustainable. A hillside site spilling down to the sea, we conceptualised a luxury hotel resort that had minimal impact on the natural landscape and protected trees on the location.

“If dreams of flying are the last hope to freedom, I will pray for wings till my last breath.” - Steven Erikson Taking inspiration from the free birds we established the path to freedom, designing the cottages with wings.

The site is located at the Crystal Bay, Nusa Penida, in Bali, Indonesia. Crystal Bay is probably the most popular west facing beach on Nusa Penida. The site has a 30 degree slope, facing directly towards the beach.

Music is an indispensable part of our lives. Whether it’s the beatbox in someone’s car, the coffee house, the mall, the road - it’s everywhere. Music is universal. Music creates a sense of homogeneity among the diverse class of individuals and with time, becomes synonymous to their identity. That’s how Montserrat, a small island in the Caribbean looked like in 1970s. In 1970, George Martin commissioned a music studio in Montserrat which became the epicenter of the international music scene manouvering a communal experience and an unspoken bonding among artists and locals. In1995, Soufriere Hills Volcano erupted and the southern portion of the island was labelled as an exclusion zone. And thus, Monserrat lost it’s status symbol.

“Little darling, the smile’s returning to their faces Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been here. Here Comes The Sun” -Song by the Beatles Our design, a true public space, transcending all barriers of caste, class or colour, attracts many due to it’s interactive facade and interesting form. It aims to revive the status symbol and spread joy in Montserrat.

SITE The site is located in Montserrat, an overseas territory of the United Kingdom is a small island in seas of Caribbean. The tragic eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano in Montserrat led to its collapsing culture of music and status symbol. Community interaction deteriorated and people started migrating off the island. This musical retreat centre aims to revive the communal experience and unspoken bonding between people and celebrities through music.

The Hamlet House

Post-Pandemic Residence, Adelaide

Project

Competition | Group of 2 | Post-Pandemic residence | 2021

Brief

Looking at an an era post the pandemic, the aim is to explore how a house design takes on multiple roles and creates and ideal space of a home.

Location

Adelaide, Australia

Keywords

Post-Pandemic Design, Residence Design

Softwaes used

Autodesk Revit, Autodesk AutoCad, Lumion, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator

During the coronavirus pandemic, the house became a haven, and at the same time, a prison. The space of the home took on multiple roles- of the workspace, the gym, and the entertainment space. It was also the silent and patient witness of frustration, monotony and sometimes, loneliness. The pandemic continually reinforced sharp lines between the inside and outside and simultaeously, chaos and order. Being able to do the everyday activities normally, without leaving the house, life at “Hamlet House” mimics city life. The layout of the streets allows residents to step outside to reach the workplaces, it encourages children to ride their bikes and run around on the little paths. The heirarchy of spaces and the flexible layout of the house by the use of moving, openable walls blurs the boundary between the inside and the outside. Breaking the monotony, the character of each room can be changed by these sliding panels and louvres. The amalgamation of all these concepts makes a little village, one’s own little pandemic-resilient village. Who wouldn’t like to have their own little hamlet!

DESIGN FEATURES

FORM DEVELOPMENT

Being confined in our homes, working, learning, sleeping and living in the same space during the pandemic, our efficiency in all the activities went downhill. The design intends to change that by dividing the house into activity zones encouraging you to change your surroundings for different activities.

Spatial planning and connectivity on site

Due to the flexible layout of the house by use of moving, openable walls, the character of each room can be changed blurring the boundary between the inside and the outside.

Hierarchy of spaces: The spaces are arranged keeping the core in the centre. The public spaces are oriented such that they face outwards whereas the private zones face inwards towards the courtyard. These private zones can be very useful for isolation and quarantine as well.

Orientation of zones and street layouts

Subtracting mass to make public as well as private outdoor spaces

FINAL DESIGN This view shows the different movable and openable walls

Adding pergolas on different zones to create a drama of light and shadows

SITE PLAN Plot size: 600 sq.m This drawing shows juxtaposition of the concrete-green roof and the pergolas.

FLOOR PLAN The floor plan shows the layout of the spaces and its furniture and also emphasizes on the fixed and movable walls in the design, and also the layout of the streets.

“A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy.” -Juan Montoya Vaasa is a lively and beautiful coastal city. It is said to be the sunniest city of the Scandinavian nation of Finland. The eye-pleasing design style of a Scandinavian interior can be portrayed as stunning, elegant and minimalistic, an effortless aesthetic that is quite charming. A classic Scandi-inspired space places functionality above aesthetics, where subtle neutral touches and lots of negative space are at the forefront. A soothing atmosphere of neutrals, other colors are added to the color scheme, such as shades of blues, mauves, soft grays, charcoal, and milky whites, which helps to capture the light. The interiors are designed to play with enough natural light, which act like a hot commonity in the Nordic countries. The muted colour schemes, lot of natural light, earthy materials, and clutter-free layout come together to make calm, cozy and warm interiors, best suited for cold places, like Vaasa.

To study and document the vernacular house of the ‘Kutiya Kandh’ tribe.

Keywords

Vernacular architecture is often called ‘building without architects’, based on vernacular principles, localized knowledge, and material culture.

Vernacular architecture style is developed by generations, shaped by indigenous knowledge and experiences.

Ethnic groups tend to be closely linked to their tradition, and their cultural ties are excessively expressed through vernacular architecture. The group chosen for this study is the ‘Kutiya Kandh’ tribe belonging to Phulbani district of Orissa

Half cut bamboos are used as purlins and rafters being very easy to use
