In the last fifty years, there has been tremendous increase in the number of tourists visiting the site of Aanta caves. The caves and the paintings are deteriorating at an alarming rate. The tourists have increased awareness of this human masterpiece, but have also reduced its life span. The first step was taken to reduce the pollution caused by the cars and buses. This resulted in infrastructure development and staring green bus service. The second stage was the visitors center. The formulation of the program deviced in a solution of recreating the same aura as at ajanta cave site which is achieved by replicating the 4 importaqnt caves in a circular path. A water body in the concave area recreates the scene at the original cave site.The project is a humble gratitude towards the very pehnominal works in the history of buddhist architecture. Though the program is set in a comtemporty setup, it still holds right to its past and thus is defined as mixed architecture. The design phase of this project started in 2001 and work commensed in jan 2006. I was involved in the execution phase where a lot of remodelling happened because of the site conditions . I was involved in preparing working drawings and coordinating the consultant’s drawings. As the caves are of utmost importance to the project, we documented the caves with a team of 9 people and prepared the documentation drawings.

Ellora being part of heritage sites in india and especially known for monolithic carving of kailash temple from top to bottom where the practice of buddhist monks was from elevation (facade) being converted in a volume and deriving a plan in process.In the process to preserve the aura of this site and also to act as a cultural and infromation center. Ellora visitors centers program deals with the mentioned aspects.The program consist of a tourist center serving as the information desk, this leads to a museum and interpretation units called as interpretation center. This is then let to a cluster of built forms mainly shops for local artisans and 2 idential restaurnats with a central courtyard with a craft center where the local artisans can show the process of making the artifacts. After ajanta visitors center’s construction was commensed, in the next 2 months this project also had signs of commensment. This project, also like ajanta visitors center was delayed, so i was later involved in the execution phase, where i worked on the working drawings of the craft center and the shops area which included coordination with the structural and the services consultants drawings. Though the site was not as rocky as ajanta, but it had soft soil, which was a tricky part because the whole structure had to be literally not seen from the road so that only the cave site at ellora would be of importance and nothing else.

Coalescing Matrix

Abstracting a system of hexagonal mesh and studying the pattern, lead to an organization of an interconnecting and coalescing system. As it defines it as self coalescing, it grows in a self similar organization by bracing, interconnecting and fusing and eventually forming a continuous matrix. The similarity in the system defies from the pattern formation with its difference in the operation of the system. While studying the behavioral phenomenon of reflection of sound waves and by deducting the medium, a connection is established between both the entities in form of interference. This interference is blended in with the self similar logic of the matrix. The extensions/interference locations regulate the matrix by adapting to the directionalities and the movements leading to an open ended condition.

Faces and edges are the most evident terms used in describing objects and spaces. Their being in the terminology also defines the boundaries of beginning or end. Therefore, the research to investigate in the potentials of faces and edges beyond the terms but of their existence and the difference that is made with their presence in the architecture is of a very interesting nature. The research about faces and edges is the result of prior experiments while doing studies on type of Effervescent surfaces which later resulted in a Model for exhibition at Wilma Tolksdorf gallery, Frankfurt am main. Continuing with the same, but in a different direction than the previous models, the research was then focused on a unit based system to derive a Design model. In order to achieve this, a complimentary study of Merzbau (Kurt Schwitters) was introduced for additional parameters. The analysis of merzbau, as space , spatial component driving the space in a dynamic state of constant change, resulted in a series of graphical representations and drawings, mapping the scenarios of Merzbau. Few of the interesting things to be noted in merzbau were the faces and edges of the space and also lamella variations through plans and sections revealing the dynamic nature of the space itself.

.POINT HORIZON

The research of Face and Edge from the previous semester is carried forward in this term with complimentary studies of architectural examples. Pavilions being the typology of the architectural examples, are unique to study and analyse. As my interests in Face and edge, their articulation in Villa NM were very evident. In doing so, it was also interesting to divert the research to a more Architectural context. The spit in the surface and space itself defines Horizon, thus Architecture itself becomes the horizon. Mies’ Barcelona pavilion also defines Horizon as Horizontal symmetry. Thus, both these examples are of interesting nature to have incorporated Horiozon as an architectural phenomenon.

Art Hostel as thesis project combines the native Brazilian notions of spatial interpretations and the architectural implications of these notions. The fluid spaces in the environment of Brazil dissolve the idea of personal and collective. The notion is not completely redundant but is reflected in such a way to somehow merge both movements in a perfect coalescence. Thus, the changing reality of society into digital networking demands for change in his perspective and horizon. Horizon, the notion of horizon as the view outside the window frame has changed into an unlimited and multiple choices of different worlds which open up with a window of internet and many other means of perpetual networks. Thus the user has an ability to project oneself and have an individual perspective on the idea of personal horizon. In the collective, for example a hostel, this idea becomes necessary to be explored in architecture. Horizon being a virtual and a continual dispersion of movement and an architectural plane of reflection, allows subtle changes in the impression of space. Therefore, the horizon is not just the plane of reference for the space but becomes the instrument to manipulate the space.

15 pieces of Sound-Wilma Tolksdorf Gallery

Through our research on the 20th century music and Karl Stockhausen, we were asked to design a sound piece which represented our interpretation of architecture and the theory of sound, when combined. This piece was an on going research of my first semester study which included self interlocking system which stabelizes itself. For the exhibition piece, a matrix of such interlocking pieces was created to express the fluidity and transition in music.

Staedelschule first year class was invited to be part of an exhibition - Ampelphase 3 at Vitra showroom in frankfurt am main. The other participants in the exhibition were architecture offices from and around frankfurt. For the exhibition we decided to take up my study from semester 2 and also our researach background about Merzbau (Kurt Schwitters ) to form this sculptural object which evolves from the ground into a seat and then transforms into the tree like structure. As a team we conceptualised and fabricated the pieces and put together the exhibition in less than 2 weeks. One could lay down on the seat that emerges from the ground and look up to the tree, like laying down and relaxing on a thearpist’s couch.

City of Clouds investigates sustainable dessert living in the future. The proposal as part of an exhibition to invite ideas for a Post oil city. Our idea is to invert the skyline of a city to accommodate the city in the valley and covering the valley with thin roof structure with solar cells. The city is also sustained with a large solar field and water conservation and storage. The housing typology is developed to suite the cortyard typology in Riyadh. The communication in the city is enhanced with the use of augumented reality and the traffic is based on smart self driving cars which communicate with the city infrastructure

SiPCHEM PADC is a laboratory and product development facility. I joined the team during the Detailed design phase. The facade is made of insulation material and finised with sprayed metal finish. My tasks were to prepare the coordinated facade drawings and 3d model based on the algorithm provided. I was also involved in building the 3d model for the project for a LAVA exhibition in Wechselraum in 2012. For the physical model, 3d model of the facade was prepared for 3d printing at Materialise.

KACST master plan is approximately one square kilometer researach and development facility in Riyadh, KSA. The concept of sustainable development and outddoor events and combining them to create a campus where knowledge would be nurtured. The Headquarters is a 18 storey administrative tower and other buildings are various research laboratories in various fields of research from Nano technology to Bio technology. My involvement in Master plan has been during the concept and schematic design phases. My tasks involved coordination and communication with various consultants till prepareing final documents for the client.

To create a walkable campus is one of the major goals of the whole development. To achieve this vision, the sectors are arranged close to each other - connected by the green boulevard. KACST Headquarters is the administrative part of the research campus in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I joined the team during the detailed design phase of the project and was involved in coming up with a Material concept for the building. As a team, we developed the concept of the gradient and complimetary pixel and volxel concept. The entrance lobby with 4 programs-reception, waiting area, cafe & exhibitionmaking 4 centers gradually fading out. For the typical areas, the Atria is the center and the gradient spreads towards the facade edges. Since the colour scheme is of gray tones, colour is introduced in the core areas. Every Atrium has its own identifying base colour and it graduates floor by floor. The colours selected, blues and greens, compliment the corporate colours of KACST, thus keeping it simple and elegant wih the accents in way finding signages etc.

Workspace Innovation Laboratory, ZVE, Vaihingen was a project about reflecting the research for the future working atmosphere. Amongst the few ideas, Modular walls which when put together would create ROOM within the room. These wall types would be connected with different means of connections such as hinges, rails etc. Thus allowing for multiple configurations. The program for the project consisted of zzv nos. workstations, future project room - where the creativity and team work would be the focus and how new technological advancements are supporting the interactive team work scenarios. Apart from working in team and at workstations, highly focused work areas for individuals was also an important program. Any working condition when nurtured with breaks- may be reading or listening to music or a power nap, has been known to improve the performance. Hence hush cocoon- where people would relax / silent room.
