Child’s or adults beanie with a texture pattern, worked from the bottom-up in the round Perfect for the Jelly Bean fan in your life!

Measurements Child size fits 51-53cm (approx 20-21 inches). Adult size fits 56-58 cm (approx 22-23 inches). Numbers for the child’s size are given with numbers for the adult size n brackets eg child (adult) Yarn: Double Knitting / (Australian 8ply) yarn, in Main colour (MC): 90m and Contrast colours (C1-5): small amount of up to five colours for jelly bean stripes Sample was knitted in Shepherd Colour 4 Me 8ply (red with yellow, green and orange beans took just under one ball of red). Needles: Either circular or double pointed needles in US7 / 4.5mm and US 5 / 3.75mm (due to the “make and lose” stitch pattern a needle one size larger than what you would used for stocking stitch is recommended for the main body of the hat). Gauge 18 stitches per 4 inches / 10cm in stocking stitch using US7 / 4.5mm needles

Abbreviations See http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/knit.html DCD - double central decrease – slip 2 stitches together (as if to start a K2tog), K1, pass both slipped stitch over as one. This gives a decrease of three stitches into one with the centre stitch visible on the front of the work.

Brim Cast on 80 (90) stitches, with an elastic cast-on. Join for working in the round and place marker to denote beginning and end of round. Using 3.75mm needles work 10 rows of K1 P1 rib. Work 1 round knit, increasing 1 stitch every 8 (9) stitches. Stitch count is now 90 (100) stitches.

Bean Stitch Rounds 1 to 4 are worked in main colour only Round 1: K6, * DCD, K7 *, repeat from * to * around, end round with DCD, K3. Round 2: Knit Round 3: Slip 1 purlwise, * K3, K2tog, K1, SSK * repeat from * to * around, noting that the final SSK is worked over the last stitch of the round and the first stitch of the round. To work this, work to last stitch of round, slip this last stitch, RM, slip one stitch (the first stitch of the round), complete the SSK by knitting the two slipped stitches through back of stitch, PM. Round 4: Knit Rounds 5 and 6 are worked in contrast colour only Round 5: With yarn in back, slip 4 purlwise * (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1) into next stitch, slip 5 purlwise *, repeat from * to * around, ending with slip 1. Round 6: With yarn in back, slip 4 purlwise * yarn to front, purl 5, yarn back, slip 5 purlwise *, repeat from * to * around, ending with slip 1. Rounds 7 to 12 are worked in main colour only Round 7: Knit Round 8: Knit Round 9: * DCD, K7 *, repeat from * to * around, end round with K2tog instead of DCD. Round 10: Knit Round 11: * K1, SSK, K3 K2tog *, repeat from * to * around. Round 12: Knit Rounds 13 and 14 are worked in contrast colour only Round 13: * (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1) into next stitch, slip 5 purlwise *, repeat from * to * around. Round 14: * yarn to front, purl 5, yarn back, slip 5 purlwise *, repeat from * to * around. Rounds 15 to 16 are worked in main colour only Round 15: Knit Round 16: Knit Repeat Rounds 1 to 16 once more and then work Rounds 1 to 8 once. Five jelly bean stripes completed and two further rounds in MC, you should now have the original 90 (100) stitches. Shape Crown Work Round 9 once. Knit 2 rounds. If you wish to add depth to your hat without adding more jelly bean repeats then add more rounds here. The purple hat in the photos is an adult size with four extra rounds added here to accommodate my long hair, the red hat (worn by my 8 year old son) is adult size without any extra rounds.

Round 1: slip 2 purlwise, *K5, DCD* repeat from 8 to * around, working last DCD with slipped stitches from start of rounds, moving marker. Rounds 2 and 3: Knit Round 4: slip 1 purlwise, *K3, DCD* repeat from 8 to * around, working last DCD with slipped stitch from start of rounds, moving marker. Rounds 5 and 6: Knit Round 7: slip 2 purlwise, *K1, DCD* repeat from 8 to * around, working last DCD with slipped stitchs from start of rounds, moving marker. Rounds 8 Knit Round 9: K2tog all around. Break yarn leaving 15cm tail, run through last 9 (10) stitches and secure.

Run in ends, block gently.
