Training Accreditation Oil Spill Response’s full suite of training services is designed to match specific UK and international training standards. Whether it is a published or client-tailored course, a UK MCA or IMO Model Training course, the quality of our training services is of paramount importance to us and is reflected in the array of accreditations we have successfully obtained.

UK MCA Training Standards The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) stipulate that oil spill response training should be sought from an accredited training centre. Oil Spill Response was the first oil spill training organisation to receive such recognition by the UK Nautical Institute to deliver the full range of UK oil spill response training courses on behalf of the MCA.

IMO International Standards Oil Spill Response has had extensive experience in working with the International Maritime Organization to deliver its Model Training courses worldwide. We have also received accreditation from the Nautical Institute to deliver such courses on behalf of the MCA.

DECC Training Standards All courses accredited by the Department of Environment & Climate Change (DECC, formerly BERR) are conducted in Aberdeen while the UK Response and Control course is offered in Southampton for UK delegates who require an IMO 2 equivalent certificate. All DECC accredited courses are available as client-tailored options. All training courses delivered in the UK meet the National Oil Spill Training Standards where appropriate.

The UK Harbour Masters Association In 2008, Oil Spill Response launched the UK Response and Control Course for ports, harbours, oil handling facilities and the offshore oil industry which is accredited to: IMO Level 2 UK MCA Level 4/4p DECC Level 4 Delegates from UK ports and harbours who undergo this course receive 40 UKHMA CPD points, with an additional 40 points to be gained if the Assessment Option is successfully completed.

OPITO In 2007, Oil Spill Response was awarded OPITO approved status for our Competency Management System. The Approved Competency Management System (ACMS) charts the development and assessment of our staff and is the basis for technical training and career development. The competency-based Assessment Option was successfully introduced in 2008. It is currently integrated into selected published courses and also built in to clienttailored training upon request. For each course offering the Assessment Option, Oil Spill Response has developed an occupational standard which defines the scope of knowledge and standard of performance required to be awarded a certificate of competence by OPITO. This is on top of receiving the standard course certificate where applicable.

Areas of Assessment We work with delegates individually or in small groups as opposed to presenting lectures. Delegates will be thoroughly tested on their mastery of information and practical skills through a series of written tests, tabletop exercises, practical deployments and other interactive activities. Delegates are closely observed so as to evaluate his/ her ability to perform essential job skills.

Active approach to learning and understanding.

Build confidence in carrying specific tasks as well as understanding the level of performance expected.

Gives organisations confidence in their personnel to conduct a safe and effective response, enabling core business activities to resume as quickly as possible.

Delegates receive a portfolio of demonstrated competencies verified in line with the OPITO approved management system. Further competencies can be added to the portfolio as they are achieved.

To achieve a high level of delegate/ assessor interaction and maintain quality standards of assessment, Oil Spill Response limits the number of places for assessment. This number will vary with each course.
