1. HOTEL SCHOOL Master Dissertation Project, architect Marta Rocha Guarda, Portugal
ABSTRACT: The project is located in the city center of Guarda, a small city in the interior of Portugal. The Hotel is currently closed and the idea of the intervention was to bring alive this building, dated from the 30’s, by adding a new program associated to the hotel one: a school of hotelier. The hotel would work as a place for the students to apply their knowledge in a real context witch would be used as an excuse to rehabilitate not only the building but also the surrounding urban area. Adding a school to the hotel would turn to be the real challenge of the organization of this project contemplating learning kitchens, a library, classrooms and technical areas that should be connected to the service areas of the hotel. Since the building is highly degraded there was also need to redesign the interior layout of the hotel, therefore, it was designed a new lounge, bar, restaurant and all of the old hotel rooms. Beside the technical issues it was also a challenge to find a true balance between the old and the new building. In a mountain city characterized by the yellowish granitic stone, the proposal would “coat itself in this material helping it to truly fit the site.

2. FAUP LABORATORY Project Design Studio IV, architect Adalberto Dias Porto, Portugal
ABSTRACT: Located close to the Faculty of Architecture of Porto, the idea of this program was to fulfill the need of expansion of the current complex of the architecture school. Contemplating two multipurpose classrooms, 5 new auditoriums, master classrooms and a laboratory for 3d models, the program was about 5000m2. The main idea of the project was not to visually arm the oldest house and gardens of the faculty. Therefore, the building suffers a torsion that uncovers the house also indicating a path leading to the old gate of this manor from the XVIIIth century. Entering the 1st floor we walk free through the foyer that gives access to the two long bodies perceived from the exterior. The two multipurpose classrooms are 600m2 each and are placed on the 2nd floor. Placing them side by side with a courtyard in the middle offers a new exterior space, symmetric to Siza Vieira’s courtyard on the other side of the garden, enclosing the complex of the faculty. Completely made out of concrete, the structure is emphasized creating a rhythm of structural pillars and beams that design the metric of windows and doors.

3. CASA DA MÚSICA APARTMENT BLOCKS Project Design Studio III, architect Marta Rocha Porto, Portugal
ABSTRACT: Located in a city gap of a deactivated train station of the city of Porto, Studio III predicted the completion of this city area with a 22.000m2 housing program. After the design of a urban plan for the area, the main goal was to design all the housing buildings, selecting one in particular to further develop with detail at a scale of 1:100, 1:50 and 1:20. The idea was to explore all sorts of types of collective housing from which I selected a gallery block located in the north side of the site. Through the design of a high rise building I was able to create good perspectives to the Rotunda da Boavista garden and to the iconic building of Casa da Música. The design also included an office building right next to this apartment block, witch in the end lead to a proposal where there was need to take advantage of all of the south facade to good illuminate the apartments. Exploring a duplex type of organization inspired on Peter Smithson’s building Robin Hood Gardens in London, the stairs, located parallel to the gallery, aloud to organize the apartment and illuminate the entire living room.
