CYCLETOPIA TYPE: Train Station | LOCATION: Oxford, UK | TIME: Autumn 2016 Year 4 Project | 2016/17 Basil Spence Competition

Group Member Xiangxue Chen Siqi Chen Pitchaya Chayavoraprapa Junshi Wace Bonnie Yang

Oxford has the second highest ratio of cyclist commuters in the UK. During the site trip to Oxford, the project group realised despite the large cyclist population, the cycling environment in Oxford is unsatisfactory and no public bicycle renting point has been installed for convenient access. To respond to the Oxford City Council’s initiative ‘Cycle City’ we would like to design the train station to bemore than a transportation hub, also serving as a cyclist utopia where both novices and professionals can enjoy the

benefits of cycling. Cycletopia proposes a train station that focuses on the local cyclists' demand and provides easy access for cycling commuters as well as related services. The irregular sky garden penetrating the station building consists of ramps which accommodate the building's purposes beneath. The essential feature is the Moving Facade on each corner of the station building, where the bicycles are displayed for renting in the manner of paternoster in hope to attract potential users.

BICYCLE RENT POINT - Moving Facade The Moving Facades consist of paternoster system and double skin facade to serve as an innovative bike rent point. Rechargeable electric bikes are attached with steel holders to the conveyor chains, which remain in consistent movement that will deliver the bikes

to renters waiting at the collect point. The mechanism is designed for both practical use and aesthetic aspect to respond to the future scheme of 'Cycle City' in Oxford. Each bike has a meter recording the electricity consumed or generated by the user which is used to calculate rent fee later.

CITY IN A NUTSHELL TYPE: Mixed-Use Incubator | LOCATION: Dorchester, UK TIME: Spring 2017 | Year 4 Project : the Uncanny

The agenda focuses on modern day young employees and the common problems they meet due to daily commuting. In the UK, the average time spending on the road is 54 minutes per day. It is not surprising how commuting can affect the wellbeing of workers, let alone the environmental pollution produced by transport vehicles. Dorchester currently is an in-commuting town, with approximately 21% external workforce of the overall employee population. The project aims to benefit young designers seeking opportunity in Dorchester and local economy

simultaneously. Provided with lowcost accommodation and collective working environment, the nonlocal professionals can quickly start their work and build connections in Dorchester. The embedded art gallery allows the designers to present their works to the local public. Specified training courses are available to the professionals and local amateurs alike. This building complex hopes to incubate a young, thriving art-oriented community that can contribute to the currently unimpressive culture environment of Dorchester.

THE RISE TYPE: Theatre | LOCATION: London, UK | TIME: Autumn 2015 Year 3 Project : Urban Ghost

Group Member Xiangxue Chen Hugh Pearce Savvas Procopiou Joshua Vize Yuyan Zang

The assigned brief is to create a fringe theatre based on the site of the unused Aldwyc tube station in London, including a bar, an underground poster gallery and a station museum. The existing station on the ground floor requires minimal changes to preserve its original layout while still serve as the entrance to the theatre above. In an Immersive Theatre, the audience will need to join the performance rather than sitting back. Instead of designing fixed interior that

only suits the existing layout. we create the space that could be adjusted to a variety of immersive productions. The bar will be included as part of the theatre. The abandoned lift shaft to the tube platforms will be adapted to a poster gallery underground. The theatre integrates the audience with actors, allowing possibilities different from conventional performances. The detachable platforms create versatility and are easy to adjust for stage setups.

MEDICAL CENTRE TYPE: Health Care | LOCATION: Bath, UK | TIME: Winter 2014 Year 2 Project : Medical Centre

Based on one of the available sites in University of Bath, the project aims to develop the consciousness of analysing site conditions and bringing the design into context. The brief is to create a university medical centre which will also partially open to the public. The project intends to convey the ordinary experience in the medical centre into an intriguing journey. Visitors will go through vivid contrast of light and shade when travelling inside the building. The building form remains

clean with exposed concrete panels and timber flooring to emphasise simplicity. The medical centre enjoys an open view to the greenfield lying to the south, which is expected to comfort the patients with scenery of nature. The chosen site locates at the conjunction between university bus station, gym, campus car park and student accommodation, granting convenient access for both patients and staff.
