River Irt 0-8-2

The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway is one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in England, known affectionately as La’al Ratty meaning “ little railway “. It was 100 years ago in April 1913 that the original 3 foot line closed and in 1915 the new 15 inch La’al Ratty was born. Our engines transport passengers from Ravenglass, the only coastal village in the National Park and of huge significance in Roman times, to Dalegarth for Boot some 210ft above sea level. The journey itself was one of Wainwright’s favourites crossing through seven miles of spectacular scenery within sight of England’s highest mountains, the Scafell Range. Our cosy covered and open top carriages provide the most spectacular views as you travel up the line. On arrival there is something for everyone and with so many trails and walks to explore, why not extend your stay in one of our unique Pullman camping coaches – Elmira and Maid of Kent!
