Safety Information
Warning: this is not a toy. For safety, keep out of reach of children. Choking hazard, contains small parts. Beacons Model Lighting Kits are intended for adult collectors age fourteen years and over. This lighting kit is made to operate on a 9V DC power supply. Any attempt to operate at other voltages may result in irreversible damage to the components. Your lighting kit is fitted with a standard length 2.1mm DC socket connector, which allows it to be powered via a 9V mains transformer/adaptor or 9V battery pack (a battery connector is available separately). We recommend use of 'regulated' transformers. Please refer to the manufacturer's instructions prior to use.
SETTING THE VOLTAGE The lighting kit must be operated at 9V DC – ensure that you use either a fixed 9V DC supply or a multi voltage supply set to 9V DC, checking the voltage setting each time before connecting the lighting kit.
SETTING THE POWER SUPPLY POLARITY When using a mains transformer/adaptor, it is essential that the power supply plug is set to the correct polarity, compatible with the centre-positive wiring of the lighting kit socket. To set your power supply to the correct polarity: for a changeable plug tip on the power supply, insert the tip so that '+' and 'TIP' are aligned. for a fixed plug tip on the power supply, ensure that the switch on the power supply is set to 'centre-positive', 'tip positive' or '+ TIP'.

Introduction
This Beacons Model Lighting Kit is a ready-to-fit, made-to-measure, self-contained LED lighting kit, for installation as you build your model. The only wiring that is visible once the lighting kit is installed and the model build completed is the power lead and connector. It is recommended for modellers with some experience of plastic kits, as installation requires a degree of modification – primarily drilling holes to accommodate the LEDs and power lead. These instructions are for the installation of lights into the Revell 1:500 Star Trek Into Darkness USS Enterprise NCC-1701 model and integrate with the Revell instructions and parts.
Planning
Before you begin the installation, familiarise yourself with the lighting kit using the Label Key as a guide to get to know the components and identify each type of light. You can test your kit straight away, prior to starting your build – it is ready to connect to a 9V transformer and plug in. It is essential that you prepare thoroughly throughout the build, so read and follow all steps carefully. Study the instructions for the model carefully, as you will need to change the build order, as explained in the step-by-step instructions that follow. Prior to drilling any holes, or glueing LEDs in place and/or glueing together model sections, take care to mark and check the position according to our illustrations and guidance – we’ve researched the film to ensure accurate reproduction of the ship within the constraints of the model. Whenever possible, use a taped-together practice build prior to each step of final fixing.

It is important to maintain this order of working, as it is vital that some steps are completed prior to proceeding with the build. These instructions cross reference the steps given in the Revell instruction leaflet. The position of all strobes is pre-determined and fixed – holes are drilled through which the LEDs are poked and glued. Guidance on the position of the internal glow LEDs is given. For optimum light transmission, do not paint the windows white.
Wherever possible, measurements are given to assist in positioning the LEDs. Leave the coded cluster labels in place for as long as possible prior to installation, removing them just prior to each step. We have angled some the of the LEDs to allow for easier and effective positioning and fitting. All components that need to be bent have been bent carefully and tested, so do not attempt to bend any other LED legs, as it could damage the internal workings of the LED.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Work through in order, alongside the Revell instructions. Beware of changes to the build order. In illustrations, the character represents the position of a drill hole. We recommend use of a pin vice.
Steps 1 to 4
Prior to Step 5 and prior to painting the upper saucer section, drill holes for the forward, port and starboard strobes (S1, 2mm drill bit) – drill central bump of trio, as shown – and the beacon (S3, 3mm drill bit). NOTE See ‘Further points’ p8

Prior to Step 8, modify piece 17, the impulse engine grille, by drilling an array of holes as illustrated, using an 0.8mm drill bit in a pin vice. This allows the red glow of the impulse engines to shine through. Note that piece 17 has a grid marked – you can follow this as a drill pattern. See ‘Further points’, p8 for options.

VERY IMPORTANT – SKIP STEP 9 – Steps 10 and 11 and the fitting of all the saucer section LEDs must be done before Step 9 Steps 10 and 11
Following Step 11, once piece 20 has been stuck onto the top saucer section, drill the two upper aft strobe holes (2mm drill bit). In locating the upper aft strobes, it’s the smaller raised bump, not the large one, that must be drilled. Glueing LEDs into a drilled hole: apply super glue (CA, cyanoacrylate) around the part of the LED which comes into contact with the inner edge of the hole.

Now that all the holes have been prepared for the saucer section strobe, beacon and impulse engine LEDs, proceed to positioning and securing the saucer section lights. Take care to work through in the order given. Thread all the saucer section LEDs – S1 to S9 – through the oval shaped hole in the base of the lower section, from the exterior to the interior. Arrange the two saucer sections – upper and lower – in an open ‘clamshell’ configuration, with the aft (rear) edges together. Before glueing, spread the wires out and test-fit the LEDs. Tape may be used for a temporary fit. The LEDs of clusters S1 to S5 are all placed in fixed positions in the holes prepared. Work through to secure the strobes and beacon in order, one cluster at a time, as shown, only removing the coded tags just prior to each step. Complete each stage before proceeding to the next, giving adequate time for glue to set and ensuring that each LED is securely attached before moving on. Refer to the Label Key table for details of each cluster.
4
Mark the positions for the saucer glow LEDs, S6, S7, S8 and S9: the head of the LED is depicted by the larger black mark, with the dotted line showing the direction of the wire from the LED. Each saucer white glow LED shines through a set of windows. Position the LED approximately 25mm from the outer edge of the saucer. The central blue glow pair is mounted side by side on the sloped surface. One of the LEDs is angled to shine upwards to the upper central dome.
S8
S8
Fixing LEDs into position: either use a hot glue gun to apply glue to the model and push the black sleeving of the LED into the glue; or apply super glue onto the black sleeving and hold in place. Secure with tape until set.
S9
Using low-tack tape to allow temporary fixing, work through the clusters in order to secure the LEDs in position. Connect the power and hold the saucer section closed without engaging the pegs to check each cluster as you progress. If required, you can adjust the anchor positions slightly for better effect. Disconnect the power before glueing the saucer section lights in place, one cluster at a time. Only proceed to Step 9, attaching the upper and lower saucer sections, when all lights are fitted satisfactorily. Step 9 – complete saucer build

Note: clusters F1, F2 and F3 are all installed into the starboard half of the fuselage. Make sure that it is orientated such that the wires exiting the saucer section enter the fuselage section via the top of interconnecting dorsal. There is enough extra ‘working length’ of wire to allow for ease of installation.
After Step 15 – in which piece 26 is glued into place on the starboard half of the fuselage – and prior to Step 16, tape the two halves of the fuselage together firmly, using plenty of low-tack tape, then mark and drill the two 3mm holes for the tail beacons, one 3mm hole for the underside beacon, plus another 3mm hole for the power lead exit point. To mark the position for the underside beacon drill hole, measure and mark the centre point of the hole 22mm from the front straight edge, as shown. For the power lead to emerge, drill a 3mm hole 5mm from the curved end of the opening. Upper tail beacon F1

After drilling these four holes, separate the two halves of the fuselage and proceed in fitting the tail and underside beacon lights, glueing them firmly into position in the ‘half hole’ notches on the starboard (right hand) piece. Now mark the positions for the F3 white glow lights as shown, test fit using low-tack tape and connect to the power to check positioning before finally glueing into place.
Proceed through Steps 16, 17, 18 and 19, painting and preparing the port side of the fuselage
As per Revell instructions
Complete Step 20, glueing the fuselage together
As per Revell instructions
Prior to Step 20, in which the two main pieces of the fuselage are joined, pass the white/blue forward LED pair (F4) through the bulkheads to emerge at the front; position the base board (BB) within the fuselage at the rear, aft of the windows where it is out of sight and place the power lead in the exit notches.
5
As you complete Step 21, applying the upper section of the support pylons (piece 35), make sure that the nacelle wires/circuits exit from the narrow gaps on each side at the top of the support pylons – N1 on the starboard (right) side and N2 on the port (left) side. Proceed to Step 22, glueing piece 36 into position
As per Revell instructions
Prior to moving on to Step 23, mark and drill a 3mm hole at the centre top of piece 36 for the white spot light of the F4 pair. Drill such that the angle approximately matches that shown in the diagram – shallower than at right angles to the sloped rim – to ensure that this spot light shines up onto the central part of the saucer. Test/check the angle by holding the fuselage and saucer together. Adjust if necessary, according to your own preference, before glueing the LED in place.

Angle of drilling
Also prior to Step 23, modification is required to piece 38, to accommodate the blue glow LED of the F4 pair. Drill a 3mm hole through the centre, all the way through the central cylinder, using the indentation on the reverse as a guide.
Piece 38

Proceed through Step 27 (Step 37)
As per Revell instructions
Note: For the nacelles, work through the following routine twice: starboard references are given first, port side references are given in brackets. This section covers Revell Steps 27 to 36 for the starboard nacelle and Revell Steps 37 to 46 for the port side nacelle.
Prior to Step 28 (Step 38), drill a 3mm hole in the centre of piece 43 (55), preparing it to receive the blue glow LEDs for the domes at the front of nacelles. Mark the centre of the hole on the flat surface by holding the piece to the light so that the centre can been seen and drill through from this flat surface.

Proceed to Step 28 (Step 38). When Decal 3 is applied to piece 43 (55), use a sharp blade to pierce a hole corresponding to the drilled hole. This allows the light to shine through to the blue dome. Proceed to Steps 29 to 31 (Steps 39 to 41)
As per Revell instructions
Now remove the N1 (N2) paper tag and slot the three starboard (port) nacelle LEDs through the notched hole (on the inner half of the nacelle), from below, one by one. It’s a tight fit, but they will come through. Pull each LED through one of the notch holes, then move the wires across to the other notch hole to make space to pull another through.
Before proceeding to Step 32 (Step 42), secure the three blue nacelle LEDs into position, as shown – two directed aft, one stuck into the hole prepared in piece 43 (55) so it shines through to the blue dome. Proceed through Steps 32 to 36 (Steps 42 to 46), as per Revell instructions, completing the construction of the starboard nacelle.
Having completed the starboard nacelle, repeat the routine alongside Steps 37 to 46, to build the port side nacelle, using N2, the last remaining LED group.
Prior to Step 48, you must create a hole to provide passage for the power lead through the top of the stand. Care is needed to drill this hole in the right position, such that it corresponds with the hole on the belly of the fuselage, from which the lead exits the main model. Tape the two upright parts of the stand (pieces 64 and 65), together. Measure and mark the centre point of the hole, as shown, 16mm/7mm along the 23mm section indicated, then drill a 3mm hole. Enlarge/adjust the hold slightly if needed, using a sharp blade or a slightly larger drill bit. Complete Step 48 Step 49
Prior to Step 50, prepare a 10mm x 10mm square hole in the base (piece 68), as shown. Drill a 3mm pilot hole within the square at each corner, then cut the piece out using a sharp blade and cutting mat.
Pass the connector and power lead through this hole before attaching the base piece to the stand uprights, as per Step 50.
Steps 51 to 57
A small notch may be cut from the edge of the base piece to allow the power lead through. Position this notch such that it would be least visible when the model is in your chosen location. Some suggestions are shown in the illustrations. Alternatively you may wish to attach the base to a plinth, in which case you can create a 12mm diameter hole to pass the connector through.

Further points
Handle the wire loom and all components with care. Rough treatment is likely to damage the connections and components. You may choose to paint the inside of the model to mask and avoid ‘glow through’ at the sites of the inner glow LEDs. As an alternative modification to drilling the pattern of holes for the impulse engines, you may cut out the grille section and fit a section of grille mesh sheet in its place. A piece of diffuser sheet placed behind the grille can act to further enhance the glow effect.
